Likely the best how-to video I have ever watched. Easy to follow with your oversized instructions. I learn more from RUclips than I do from manufacturers' sites. In case you read comments I have what appears to be a serious problem to which you may have a quick solution. My Windows 10 (DELL) will not shut down. I have to shut it down with a force shut-down. When I turn it on it tells me it is trying to install updates. The same result every time (over two months now) "cannot install updates, returning PC to its previous configuration" not exact quote. This takes about 12 minutes. As far as I can tell I have lost no functionality. I have tried all the options in the Security and Update menu and never get past the "start now." The machine immediately returns the note "cannot reset this PC." I am willing to go deep in to the reset process but am blocked at an early stage. I am not a techie but will try rebuilding the machine including all programs if I can just get it clean. Any tips? Again, great video.
Thanks for your kind words. As for your issue, sounds like your Windows updates maybe corrupted or damaged. You can try deleting the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, however it requires stopping the update service which you can do from an elevated CMD prompt with "Net stop wuauserv" without the quotes. After deleting the folder, you can do "Net start wuauserv" to restart it and that recreates the folder. See how that goes.

Good question maybe worth making a video about. using a bootable disk can be better knowing it's not compromised or infected. Depending on your reason for resetting the PC to begin with. if virus infected, or hacked, I'd use a bootable disk. I wouldn't trust the built in tool.

You should see something on the screen that walks you through it. If just a black screen there is something else going on. Did this resolve itself or what is happening?
Whenever I finish windows installation media and try to install, I get hit with a "No drivers could be found" So I can't get unbanned from the games I wanna be because I can't get past the first step, I've tried everything and nothing works, I've even tried downloading drivers from it and once it installs in it it just doesnt show up, is my pc broken?
I'm not sure I know what you mean. Is it not able to find the hard drive to install Windows on and asking for the driver for the hard drive? Some disks require downloading a drive from another computer.
it's been a while since I played with dual boot, but they should be on two separate partitions so reinstalling one shouldn't affect the other. But if the boot partition gets reset, that might remove the dual boot info and it won't know how to boot to Ubuntu again.

You don't need to buy a new key or license. the hardware remembers the Windows. Just use any DVD or bootable USB stick to reinstall Windows. Just make sure you use the same Windows, like if it's Home, don't use Pro or it won't activate.

if I recall correctly, it will prompt you for the option if it recognizes a second partition. normally I believe it ignores the second partition. Always good to take a backup just incase which you should be doing regularly anyway.

Yes, I believe this will help but it's overkill. You can probably just uninstall any video driver software and delete video display drivers from device manager.
Thanks for your comment, there must ben an issue with the physical hard drive that is causing this to happen. You may have to test the hard drive health and potentially purchase a new drive to do a fresh install with.
You mean after everything is reinstalled and up and running, the computer wants to shut off and on by itself? That's very strange. if it wasn't doing it before, sounds like software, but a fresh install of Windows should have fixed software issues. Try booting in safemode for further troubleshooting

That means you won't be able to go back to Windows 7 or 8. If you've been using Windows 10 for a while and no intention to go back to Windows 7 or 8, then yes. Continue.
Very strange. Defender is built in, can't be removed. Click Start and type "Windows security". it should show your current anti-virus being used. I would recommend downloading something like the free version of Avast. It's better than the built in Windows defender.

Downloading and installing other language packs only converts parts of the pc. Sounds like there's corruption in the part of the hard drive where the installation media is. The drive maybe bad or you may just need to do a little scan like SFC /scannow on the drive if you can somehow get to a command prompt.

Unfortunately it has to remove all programs regardless of what option you choose. Factory reset means whatever programs were installed from the factory are included, which will be trial versions of possibly a different version of the software you currently have, if any software at all. I would say, don't count on any software being saved.

Yes, it is separate from your profile. Actually, if you're just trying to fix your profile, I would create a new profile instead of reinstalling everything.
It only took 1 hr and 15 minutes....and all docs and photos were saved...I did Uninstall a total of 8 other apps before I did the reset which saved time...and then reinstalled again when a new fresh windows 10 appeared...ty once again 👍🎯🎯🎯
if you can't get into settings to begin the process, you could trying running SFC /Scannow command from admin level CMD prompt, then try again. If that doesn't help, you will have to use a bootable USD or DVD to reinstall Windows from.

What do you mean by "Internet drivers". it will reload basic drivers for your hardware using that from Microsoft's database of drivers. Other drivers may need to be reloaded from manufacturer website.
Truthfully, I had a blank computer last year that I had wiped out and then I loaded a $219.99 copy of good ole Windows 10. My problem is that I set it up ALL wrong. I want to be the administrator, CEO, Head Hauncho, etc. but I don’t know how properly. Currently I can’t tell if I’m the administrator, user or what and I want it done correctly this time. There was also some more stuff that I didn’t like the way I had set up so that’s why I’m sort of wanting to wipe it all out to get a fresh start PLUS, something is using huge amounts of my storage!!!!

I was hungry. Seriously though, I had trouble earlier with Mic and through I had to be closer to actually have it pickup my voice because my voice doesn't project naturally. Since upgraded the mic.
Every computer varies but I've seen it take about 30 minutes average from what I recall. I don't have to do them very often and changes over time with more upgrades and newer versions of Windows as well as faster hardware.
Will reinstalling the Windows help with the crashing problems I have with a game I had been playing for a year and a half? Most likely yes it will help. But if the issue is the hard drive it self, it won't help because the drive might need replacing. You'd need to test the hard drive health first to see if that is the issue.
probably. I got the mic a long time ago, only got the stand recently. I tried other Mics, labels, and only the SnowBall worked well for me. It still works really well so I don't feel the need to upgrade my Mic yet. Eventually I will upgrade the Mic as well :) Thanks for taking time to comment.
This is not an easy answer. You'd have to basically reinstall Windows on another larger drive, or clone it to another drive which moves everything including programs and data. At that rate, you could just buy a bigger drive to clone it to. Aside from moving Windows, there a bunch of programs you can move and default storage locations I have videos on how to do.
Hello. Yes, it certainly can, depending on the issues of the performance. if you don't have enough memory or the hard drive is dying, then reinstalling Windows will not help. If it is just alot of garbage overtime, it can help but it is a very drastic solution. Easier than troubleshooting though.

If i restart it will it remove all my files and programs?? After i upgrade my PROCESSOR, MOTHERBOARD and GRAPHIC CARD. Into higher version. My PC keeps on crashing. Even though its all new.
Depending what option you choose, it will give you the choice to keep your files, but always deletes programs. If you upgraded all those components, it's like a new computer and Windows might give you a hard time about activation but crashing can be a number of issues that needs more troubleshooting. Even though new parts, doesn't mean it is not potentially faulty. Sorry can't help here, in this case.
Could be a video driver problem. When you first turn on the computer and you have the manufacturer logo appear at least, then you know the hardware is fine and it's a Windows problem. You may need to fresh install Windows from a disk.

Maybe you need to plug in an external mouse or boot from a USB? No, it will only reinstall Windows with your username and permission level remaining the same. That's a big job to not get you the results you are looking for. you simply want to increase your permissions. I don't have a video on this specifically, yet, but you need to login as the existing administrator to promote an existing user to admin. if you are the only user on the computer, you should already be admin. If not, you can activate the built in administrator account. if this is a corporate computer, you need to talk to your IT department as they control this.

If you tried several Malware removal tools, etc and it's not working, that might not be a virus anymore, but just a damaged system that could be the result of a virus or the result of some failed update or dying hard drive. Who knows. Reinstalling Windows will fix it but that is an extreme fix. It's cheaper to do that than pay someone to troubleshoot. Maybe try Tweaking.com repair tool which is also free.
very good detailed instructions....yet you did not say you must be Internet connect to do so...if any problems of Windows with 'Connection' ....impossible to do all of your steps.
Thank you. This rule has changed a little over time. When Internet is connected, it forces you to use an online account. I setup computers purposely with Internet disconnected so it can then setup as a local account. Now in Windows 11 they force you to have Internet, but the very latest version allows you to choose a local account even with Internet connected. Little work arounds :)
If this isn't working, you can try restarting the computer while holding down the left "Shift" key on your keyboard. that should give you options and you can choose to reset your PC from there. Failing that, you'd need a USB or DVD.

That's a great idea for a video. You need a license and it's easy to do from within Windows. no need for USB or DVDs. Just inside Windows in the System settings. It shows you have Pro and there should be a button to upgrade to Pro. it will take you to the store app to purchase, download and upgrade. it runs just like a Windows update. later I can make a video on it.

Hello and thanks for your question. Sounds like there maybe a hardware problem if reinstalling Windows still didn't work. Unless a conflict with some 3rd party software you had installed. Hy... I have problem with wireless devices like Bluetooth and wifi. It says that device is not connected and giving error code 45. I have tried many methods but these doesn't work for me. Does reinstalling windows will solve my problem or not?
Depending if there are issues with more than one device on your computer, then the issue could be in the Windows software or the hardware. Reinstalling Windows will fix the software side, but if it's a hardware issue, you will still have issues. Maybe a driver problem to look at first.
It's kinda funny but recovering Windows would fix the recoverying button too. :) However, rather than using a DVD or bootable USB to do the reinstall with, you can try a cool little program from www.tweaking.com which I don't believe I made a video on and this is a powerful little program that is free and I've used it many times in the past when I wasn't sure what to do, and it fixed many issues over the years.
Thanks for your question. It will remember your user account. You have the option of keeping your data or not when you start the process. Your PC is guaranteed to work better unless the is an underlying hardware problem.
i did this on my laptop but there is still a profile that it automatically tries to log into but is giving me an error saying the profile is missing this happen to anybody else ??
if you are choosing the option to preserve data, it will keep the user profiles and if one is damaged this makes some sense. You can create a new profile, if necessary for the problem profile. Then delete the old one after backing up the data which you can access normally via c:\Users folder
Sorry for the late reply, usually I try faster. Seems too late but generally speaking, as long as no special programs that are almost impossible to find to reinstall, and as long as you either have a backup, or choose to reinstall preserving data, you're fine. Hope it all worked out well for you.

When you reinstall it should only wipe the main drive, not the secondary, but I would take a backup or temporarily disconnect the second drive just incase.

Hello and thanks for writing. This will work as long as it's not a hard drive problem. But this is not necessary to do if your only issue with Windows updates. Run the Windows update troubleshooting tool or try Tweaking.com tool.
Sorry, this method would keep the username and password. You'd have to use a backdoor method via command prompt to reset the password or something like that. Or do a fresh install of Windows from a DVD or USB.

Yes and maybe. it wipes everything but reinstalls drivers based on what it remembers but sometimes you may need to redownload the proper drivers.

By default, it only wipes C drive and the hidden system partitions you don't see. But never trust that, always backup.

it's been a while since I played with dual boot, but they should be on two separate partitions so reinstalling one shouldn't affect the other. But if the boot partition gets reset, that might remove the dual boot info and it won't know how to boot to Ubuntu again.

You don't need to buy a new key or license. the hardware remembers the Windows. Just use any DVD or bootable USB stick to reinstall Windows. Just make sure you use the same Windows, like if it's Home, don't use Pro or it won't activate.

Yes, but you need to be careful because there is an option to wipe all drives and you need to be sure you don't choose that. Otherwise, you're fine.

if I recall correctly, it will prompt you for the option if it recognizes a second partition. normally I believe it ignores the second partition. Always good to take a backup just incase which you should be doing regularly anyway.

You mean after everything is reinstalled and up and running, the computer wants to shut off and on by itself? That's very strange. if it wasn't doing it before, sounds like software, but a fresh install of Windows should have fixed software issues. Try booting in safemode for further troubleshooting

Very strange. Defender is built in, can't be removed. Click Start and type "Windows security". it should show your current anti-virus being used. I would recommend downloading something like the free version of Avast. It's better than the built in Windows defender.

My pc runs windows 10 and it initially installed in french. Downloading and installing other language packs only converts parts of the pc. The control panel remains in french, irrespective of what language pack you install and set as display language. 😂

Sounds like there's corruption in the part of the hard drive where the installation media is. The drive maybe bad or you may just need to do a little scan like SFC /scannow on the drive if you can somehow get to a command prompt.

Unfortunately it has to remove all programs regardless of what option you choose. Factory reset means whatever programs were installed from the factory are included, which will be trial versions of possibly a different version of the software you currently have, if any software at all. I would say, don't count on any software being saved.

It gets to a point where it goes to a black screen I guess that is its time limit , but that way I have to sit here a very long time before it is done . should I just wait . it shouldn't take more than a few minutes but if taking more than 30 minutes, it's definitely a problem and most likely the hard drive is bad.

It only took 1 hr and 15 minutes....and all docs and photos were saved...I did Uninstall a total of 8 other apps before I did the reset which saved time...and then reinstalled again when a new fresh windows 10 appeared...ty once again 👍🎯🎯🎯

if you can't get into settings to begin the process, you could trying running SFC /Scannow command from admin level CMD prompt, then try again. If that doesn't help, you will have to use a bootable USD or DVD to reinstall Windows from.

It's possible your hard drive is dying and needs to be tested to confirm if this is the case. You may need to fresh install Windows on a new drive.

The built in installer can become corrupt sometimes and so you have to do a fresh install in those cases or a repair install using a disk.

Sounds like something wrong with built in installer. You will probably need to create a bootable USB to install Windows.

What do you mean by "Internet drivers". it will reload basic drivers for your hardware using that from Microsoft's database of drivers. Other drivers may need to be reloaded from manufacturer website.
Truthfully, I had a blank computer last year that I had wiped out and then I loaded a $219.99 copy of good ole Windows 10. My problem is that I set it up ALL wrong. I want to be the administrator, CEO, Head Hauncho, etc. but I don’t know how properly. Currently I can’t tell if I’m the administrator, user or what and I want it done correctly this time. There was also some more stuff that I didn’t like the way I had set up so that’s why I’m sort of wanting to wipe it all out to get a fresh start PLUS, something is using huge amounts of my storage!!!!

Every computer varies but I've seen it take about 30 minutes average from what I recall. I don't have to do them very often and changes over time with more upgrades and newer versions of Windows as well as faster hardware.
What if you need the drivers?
It's never that bad. You can online to manufacturer website for the various drivers required if Microsoft doesn't have them included in the install.

Most likely yes it will help. But if the issue is the hard drive it self, it won't help because the drive might need replacing. You'd need to test the hard drive health first to see if that is the issue.

probably. I got the mic a long time ago, only got the stand recently. I tried other Mics, labels, and only the SnowBall worked well for me. It still works really well so I don't feel the need to upgrade my Mic yet. Eventually I will upgrade the Mic as well :) Thanks for taking time to comment.

This is not an easy answer. You'd have to basically reinstall Windows on another larger drive, or clone it to another drive which moves everything including programs and data. At that rate, you could just buy a bigger drive to clone it to.
Aside from moving Windows, there a bunch of programs you can move and default storage locations I have videos on how to do.

Hello. Yes, it certainly can, depending on the issues of the performance. if you don't have enough memory or the hard drive is dying, then reinstalling Windows will not help. If it is just alot of garbage overtime, it can help but it is a very drastic solution. Easier than troubleshooting though.

After i upgrade my PROCESSOR, MOTHERBOARD and GRAPHIC CARD. Into higher version. My PC keeps on crashing. Even though its all new.
Depending what option you choose, it will give you the choice to keep your files, but always deletes programs.
If you upgraded all those components, it's like a new computer and Windows might give you a hard time about activation but crashing can be a number of issues that needs more troubleshooting. Even though new parts, doesn't mean it is not potentially faulty. Sorry can't help here, in this case.

Could be a video driver problem. When you first turn on the computer and you have the manufacturer logo appear at least, then you know the hardware is fine and it's a Windows problem. You may need to fresh install Windows from a disk.

Thank you. I don't believe I have a video on that but if it's what I'm thinking, there is a solution to run the CTFMON.exe in C:\Windows\System32\ctfmon.exe Add it to autostart to run at startup so you don't have to run it each time.

No, it will only reinstall Windows with your username and permission level remaining the same. That's a big job to not get you the results you are looking for. you simply want to increase your permissions. I don't have a video on this specifically, yet, but you need to login as the existing administrator to promote an existing user to admin. if you are the only user on the computer, you should already be admin. If not, you can activate the built in administrator account. if this is a corporate computer, you need to talk to your IT department as they control this.

Hello, reinstalling Windows will work as long as you choose the option to wipe the data as described in this video. No need to go into the BIOS.

Hi Muhammad. If you tried several Malware removal tools, etc and it's not working, that might not be a virus anymore, but just a damaged system that could be the result of a virus or the result of some failed update or dying hard drive. Who knows. Reinstalling Windows will fix it but that is an extreme fix. It's cheaper to do that than pay someone to troubleshoot. Maybe try Tweaking.com repair tool which is also free.
very good detailed instructions....yet you did not say you must be Internet connect to do so...if any problems of Windows with 'Connection' ....impossible to do all of your steps.
Thank you. This rule has changed a little over time. When Internet is connected, it forces you to use an online account. I setup computers purposely with Internet disconnected so it can then setup as a local account. Now in Windows 11 they force you to have Internet, but the very latest version allows you to choose a local account even with Internet connected. Little work arounds :)

If this isn't working, you can try restarting the computer while holding down the left "Shift" key on your keyboard. that should give you options and you can choose to reset your PC from there. Failing that, you'd need a USB or DVD.

That's a great idea for a video. You need a license and it's easy to do from within Windows. no need for USB or DVDs. Just inside Windows in the System settings. It shows you have Pro and there should be a button to upgrade to Pro. it will take you to the store app to purchase, download and upgrade. it runs just like a Windows update. later I can make a video on it.

Hello and thanks for your question. Sounds like there maybe a hardware problem if reinstalling Windows still didn't work. Unless a conflict with some 3rd party software you had installed. Depending if there are issues with more than one device on your computer, then the issue could be in the Windows software or the hardware. Reinstalling Windows will fix the software side, but if it's a hardware issue, you will still have issues. Maybe a driver problem to look at first.

It's kinda funny but recovering Windows would fix the recoverying button too. :) However, rather than using a DVD or bootable USB to do the reinstall with, you can try a cool little program from www.tweaking.com which I don't believe I made a video on and this is a powerful little program that is free and I've used it many times in the past when I wasn't sure what to do, and it fixed many issues over the years.
So how do we get our user account back, (assuming your keeping your data)? Will it just ask us for the login information? Also, will my pc run better
Thanks for your question. It will remember your user account. You have the option of keeping your data or not when you start the process. Your PC is guaranteed to work better unless the is an underlying hardware problem.

if you are choosing the option to preserve data, it will keep the user profiles and if one is damaged this makes some sense. You can create a new profile, if necessary for the problem profile. Then delete the old one after backing up the data which you can access normally via c:\Users folder

Yes, it should try to find all the drivers again for the new computer during install.

When you reinstall it should only wipe the main drive, not the secondary, but I would take a backup or temporarily disconnect the second drive just incase.

Hello and thanks for writing. This will work as long as it's not a hard drive problem. But this is not necessary to do if your only issue with Windows updates. Run the Windows update troubleshooting tool or try Tweaking.com tool.

Sorry, this method would keep the username and password. You'd have to use a backdoor method via command prompt to reset the password or something like that. Or do a fresh install of Windows from a DVD or USB.
