      I've NEVER had Windows auto repair work for me and so if anything proved to be unrepairable, I would just do a fresh new install and put back all of my installed programs and do a restore of all of my system drivers and settings, using Glary Utilities and then do a AOMEI Restore since my drivers and AOMEI Backups were being stored on a separate partition or separate drive. More times than none, this proved to be the most effective means as opposed to just how slow windows repair tool really is! In doing so, I could do all of this in about 90 minutes with relative ease and the fresh installation just makes it extra nice! In addition to the said non-reparable status initially, knowing that the age of the drive in question and/or the number of hours in service; I would make an immediate judgement call and replace the drive with another solid state drive and proceed from there plus mem sticks testing and/or replacement/upgrade too! @@AskYourComputerGuy

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  9 месяцев назад

      You could. I could. But your average novice wouldn't be able to. Obviously if you have the skills and speed and proper backup protocols in place, it would be easier to start over. But not everyone is that lucky 🤷‍♂️

    Fantastic video and thanks for posting this interesting stuff, I've made notes and filed elsewhere off my PC for when I next have that issue. One thing though on restore points, going back many years through OS 10, 8.1, 8, XP etc etc, I have never yet gone to Restore and have it complete the restore, every single time I've ever tried that all I have ever gotten is Windows failed to restore! Also I wonder if one day you might do a video on something we can do to improve the abysmal transfer speeds on Win 10, I've never known it where you get speeds in kbps and seem to remember in past OS`s it being much much higher. Is there a utility or something we can do to speed up transfer speeds? Cheers from the UK

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you for the comment. It's true, sometimes Restore "fails", but I've also seen a non-booting system suddenly come back to life after a restore...followed by "system restore failed". Sometimes it repairs just enough to get you back to Windows.
      Regarding the transfer speed, that's going to be a limitation of the hardware. The faster the drive, the faster the speed. I can transfer from a HDD to another HDD in my system and it might be 15-20k a second. I transfer from an SSD to my NVME external and it jumps to 130-150k a second

    One reoccurring problem I often come across on clients computers is a failing hard drive. It's more complicated to diagnose but I boot the computer with a Hirens USB boot drive and use CrystalDisk info. There is no point in repairing a failing drive plus with Hirens you can mount and external hard drive to back up your data. Conversely the disk cloning program to "image" the faulty drive to a new drive which can then be repaired.

    Excellent info and tutorial! 👍😎 Just a thought, It might be a great thing to have "a Windows good practices video" especially for new installs.
    Fortunately I've only run across that screen a couple times in the last several, probably 10, years. My go-to first choice typically is using a System Restore Point. However, as I recall System Restore is disabled on Windows 10 installs so I don't know what the default is for Windows 11, but it might be worth doing a video about it. I always check it while I'm going through a windows install process.
    _Lately, as I mentioned, I use a third party app to clone my OS and app M.2 drive a couple times a week. So if I do run across the problem I can boot an F8 and be up and running in a minute._

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  9 месяцев назад +3

      A) a best practices for install is a brilliant idea, thank you! B) good job on the cloning. It's also on the list, just waiting on a specific vendor to send me the hardware I recommend ;)

    I've been using a PC since 1986 and Windows since v3.0, (I took some time to leave DRDOS behind and didn't really convert until Win95) - however, I've come across these tools on interminable occasions but never once had the tools fix my PC adequately. I now try just once or twice and inevitably end up re-installing the operating system from scratch rather than just resetting it.

      at 6:00 you are typing on the prompt xcopy H:\test H:\test /E to show how to retrieve files or folders. You mentioned that you should do a video on how to do this. I was wondering if you ever did the video or are still thinking about doing one.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      @freddiechristian1298 still on the drawing board, just haven't done it yet. I made video on creating a Hirens boot CD which gives you a Windows Explorer-like interface, where you can copy files like you would in Windows, so I put the previous idea on the back burner. Much easier to do in Hirens than from a command prompt, but might still make it, because some people won't be able to get a Hirens disc. Thx for the reminder 👍

    I just found your channel and subscribed. I have an HP Envy. It's given me problems from the get go, but HP repaired it under warranty the first couple of times.
    I recently made the mistake of downloading Windows 11 on it and it crashed again. It's stuck on the Automatic Repair Window. I've watched several repair videos and followed all of their prompts, or hacks, and so far I can't get it back up. I did have a lot going on and maybe need to try again. My son in law did save a back up for me of my files when working to bring it up another time before I downloaded Windows 11. Can I uninstall Windows 11 and go back to Windows 10?
    I'm going to try taking your advice on this video tomorrow when I have time to sit down with my computer.
    I did hear that HP discontinued making the Envy's. If it's true, I can understand why. 😢

    Does this apply to Windows 7? I unfortunately updated my Apache open Office software and it really messed up my computer . My computer does boot up, but my entire desktop was changed, my icons on my desktop have gone, and it almost looks like a safe mode screen. I ran system restore to a prior date before the Apache software update which caused this and it did not help either. Should I try system restore in safe mode or try additional older restore points?. Your help and advice 🎉will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and best wishes

    Your advice has been very easy to follow, thanks. No steps have worked yet for me. I think AVG antivirus reset my computer. I guess I need to contact AVG tech support to ask how to uninstall their software from the automatic repair screens. After looking online for others with this AVG antivirus trouble.

      I can access the C:
      I can see Windows and Program Files (x86) in C: \ directory, plus 12,288 DumpStack.log on 19/03/2024.
      To make a back up, I tried: C: \cd \windows\systems32\config
      The reply:
      The system cannot find the path specified.
      I've emailed AVG for advice too

    I got 10yo Ideapad 100 laptop with dual-boot Windows 8.1 on both partitions.
    Had start-up problem on Windows C drive and a totally unrelated major problem (too much ink to explain) on Windws D drive.
    I used Safe Mode in “Startup Settings” for C drive - simply went into Safe Mode and then Restart straight away. That completely fixed up C drive problem.
    But somehow and in someway that operation alone also completely fixed the problem on D drive. How so?
    Both Windows now work perfectly fine.
    So thanks for your video.

      Surprisingly, safe mode sometimes actually "fixes" many normal day-to-day issues. I always recommend booting into safe mode, then restart after a successful "safe mode boot", before doing any "real" troubleshooting :)

    Thanks a lot for this very useful tutorial. In my case it will not go to safe mode - just freezes on windows 10 logo. Option to uninstall updates is asking me for a password and tells me that my password is incorrect. Option Cmd command line does the same - 'incorrect password'. Is there any way to reset or bypass my password perhaps using usb bootable flash drive? My main issue is that when I enter my PIN on welcome screen, it shows a few circles then it gets stuck a this point. I would appreciate any suggestions to try. Many thanks.

    For me, I have found it is best to do a regular disk clone using third party software. I keep all my documents on seperate drives to my Windows drive so I just boot to the cloned drive and clone it back over. That way you can always continue working while the 'backup' and restore' is being done.
    All of the windows options I have ever tried failed to work and I'd just go round in circles. So that's why I found it best to invest in another Hard Drive and just have a copy of the OS from when it last ran well. I reclone my drive each time I have a major update of an important and bloaty bit of software (e.g. Visual Studio)

    Just curious, but if 'sfc' finds a corrupted file, from where does 'sfc' replace it with the corrected version? Wouldn't the DISM commands be helpful as well?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  9 месяцев назад +2

      It should extract it from the embedded Windows WIM image file, or pull it from the Microsoft website. To be honest, not 100% sure. Yes, DISM would do the same, if you can get it to work correctly 👍
