While the title may be an unfortunate experiment in click-bait, the content is solid. We all need to do what we can to secure Windows 10 and 11 because Microsoft isn't doing it for us. Let's go through all the steps one at a time.
1. Secure Windows Account:
After you follow the instructions to check your password, enable password when waking from sleep, then press Windows+R and type netplwiz. From here you can disable automatic login and force CTRL+ALT+Delete when logging in.
2. Online Protection:
Open Internet Explorer, open your preferences, and go to "internet options." From here, you can crank up the security.
3. Disable Remote Desktop:
Hit start, type remote desktop, and make sure it is disabled.
4. Use a VPN with its own DNS server:
I use PIA because it's the fastest for the least amount of money... and it also has its own DNS server. A DNS server is used to look up each website. So, if you type, "teksyndicate.com," your DNS server will look at it and direct your browser to the correct IP address. When you use PIA's DNS server, many malicious sites are filtered out. Here's our deal with PIA: teksyndicate.com/pia
5. Use Drive Encryption:
If you have your trusted platform module enabled (in the BIOS/UEFI) then all you need to do is right-click on your drive and enable BitLocker.
6. Browser Extensions:
HTTPS Everywhere: www.eff.org/https-everywhere
Ghostery: www.ghostery.com/
NoScript Security Suite: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
7. Anti-Virus:
Kapersky: usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus
Malwarebytes: www.malwarebytes.com/

Something, something Linux...
No.
Great vid! Upgraded my OS and picked up some excellent security tips!
Very helpful. Thank u Tek. Gonna share.
How much does PIA slow down your connection speed? Are there better VPN's that are faster?
I heard there was a new Windows 2021 LTSC released last year. I'm wondering if that's better for locking down Windows vs trying to use shutup10 and other tools on a Win10Pro install.
Maybe it's right in front of my face, but where's the link to the longer version in the description that was mentioned??? Thanks!
is using a pin instead of a password good aswell
Good tips thanks
Hey Logan, where can I get that wallpaper
Thanks this is helpful!
Amazing video and information sir 👍
Good content, more of this!
Your video "What to Do First When You Install Windows 10" is also quite useful
A video on Pi-hole would be awesome.
And/Or something like OpenDNS, or pi-hole + opendns (use opendns for forward zones)
Wow 🤩! Very informative video! I already do the majority of security options here, but despite numerous years protecting my pc I still learned some new features / functions etc which benefit me and my pcs. Loving the content as always 🥰🍻 cheers
hello excuse me
Tried to turn remote desktop off says... your home edition of Windows 11 doesn't support remote desktop
I apologize I still need to watch this video. Wanted to ask if you prefer W10 over 11. I bought a key for 11 but have yet to use it as it's 1 MOBO use only. I think I need to upgrade my rig...still on an i7 6700K and GTX 1080. Saving that W11 key for now.
Does deactivating the windows key before changing motherboards work?
My main concern is that I must look at multiple attachments for my work. We know that there are several phishing attacks/malware that come through. As it is a remote job, I work on my personal Laptop. I have Windows 11 Home. I had a bitch of a time trying to get VMware and Virtual box for my VM, which failed...and now, I successfully activated Sandboxie. I followed all of these instructions, but am afraid I may still be vulnerable. Do you have any suggestions?
i know local accounts are the *right* thing to do. But when i had to unexpectedly reinstall Windows due to a hardware failure I was amazed how quickly my new install was setup with all my settings and programs automatically installed. it’s an amazing feature with having a Microsoft account. such a shame it has these drawbacks
Your Microsoft account's password should be something like
JvMQnHQv0CsT8DE18xIgXlG4qTNNefM$@P$@7VGT2TTXCwU*Ue$6Q*CqLFQ8#cetsi543kbu7NPPj8TX%NYOvGwhbD91gFrTf4zVg4rUoUH4$cO7tCyXT
And if you're under 2FA with phone sign-in then you're good. Local accounts are just as secure, but provide none of the benefits of a Microsoft account.
@@50PullUps is it really possible to have such long password?
Totally agree - the experience is very slick if you use your ms account.
My spin on this -
-do initial setup with MS account,
- make a local admin acct, then
- demote MS account permissions to standard.
This makes you elevate/authenticate with the local admin acct to do anything that could modify the system but you have all of your MS account features intact such as one drive and desktop settings sync.
@@pc_panic I do something similar. I leave the Microsoft 365 account as admin, create a non-admin local account, and use that for my interactive logon sessions. If I need to launch a process in an elevated context I clear User Account Control with the admin (Microsoft 365) account.
@@astronomos826 Absolutely. I wrote the process in another thread in this vid. It looks like a lot, but that's necessary when providing an explanation from root to branch. You can do this.
So on Firefox, I have uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Decentralyes, and ClearURLS Add-ON. Should I still add Ghostery on top of all that?
I'd recommend privacy badger and you'll be good to go
@@teksyndicate thank you!
Rather than using RDP, I install and enable Nomachine if I have to access my Windows, Linux, or Mac. Disable if I did not need to access those machines remotely.
What about bios passwords?
I'm using Norton 360, is that both a good antivirus and malware prevention program?
My personal opinion, I've used Norton and it's fine if that's what you need.
It's better as an IT managed tool for your work computer.
As a personal antivirus firewall etc, it's embedded as ring 0 drivers and can sometimes interfere with legit software, needs a licence key, had sometimes been hard to update and difficult to uninstall in certain situations, and too much hassle when Microsoft's own antivirus and firewall have worked fine for me for decades, for my home PC (I only have windows on my home PC, work is Unix/Linux/Mac). I don't do anything stupid on my PC so there's really little threat for it. I don't open exe files from spammers, I don't browse malware web sites, I don't run software from dubious sources, my browser is itself pretty secure (using uMatrix) and I use openDNS to block known malicious sources.
If I'm ever in the mood to do something unsafe, I can load up a virtual machine in vmware and let the viruses do whatever they want in the petri dish until I delete it.
Anyway, Norton is utilized more as an IT requirement to prevent the worst case situations for giving employees windows PCs. Trying to manage the security of distributed employee windows PCs who have access to company secrets is a different task than keeping your personal computer safe.
It's the same reasoning behind why I wear a mask at work to avoid covid and I don't wear a mask at home.
No and no.
Its garbage. Has been for 10 years or so. Beware - if you cancel it, they'll probably still try to bill your for renewals. Go into your Norton account and remove any payment cards, bank details, etc.
thank for your time
thanks Logan :)
What do you guys think of surfshark?
Dude YOU ROCK!
What about bios password?
Another thing: if you have your computer set to never sleep, if you walk away while in windows, it will never lock. To fix: open the screensaver settings menu, set screen saver to None, Set wait time as desired, then check "on resume, display logon screen".
Also, under network devices in explorer, you can right click and remove the IPs from your network drives, to reduce clutter.
good work+++
I can’t log in anymore because control alt del isn’t working or something ughhh I hate this so much
Update I completely wiped my pc just to get to my desktop💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Was windows not secure enough after the last video?
I remember I used Truecrypt to encrypt files. I liked to encrypt all my files in one file, which Truecrypt can
Haha! I haven't watched Tek Syndicate in over 2 years and seeing Logan with long hair without context is kind of surprising.
I haven't, thanks for asking though.
Integrating a password manager like Bitwarden into your computing world should be the #1 priority of anyone who takes security seriously. Before establishing a VPN. Before encrypting your local drives. Before installing an antivirus. Do that yesterday.
Why not just use Brave browser instead of using extensions?
You can do a lot more with Firefox, the containers are awesome... And I prefer it's functionality. Plus, I trust their team more.
Super
Isn't Microsoft getting rid of local accounts soon in a Windows 11 update?
Doubt it. That'll break stuff.
They're likely to make it difficult to create them (already done in home edition), but removing them entirely will mean all sorts of compatibility issues with older software that creates accounts for services and such.
MS really has ducked up on user accounts. There should literally be a dozen or more accounts for services so the DNS client isn't able to access files from the display driver for example. Every other OS does this. MS still lives in 1993.
But VPN slow down your internet. I'm paying for a gigabit and I only get like 100. Meg through a VPN I do use them thow
Missing an obvious one, don't log in as an administrator. You can still install stuff when logged on as a normal user, or super user. If needed Windows will prompt for admin credentials. And anytime you get such a request and you have no idea why cancel it.
2 minutes of advertising out of a 13 minute video. Almost like watching cable TV... The netplwiz suggestion is a good one since it's turned off by default. Another reason to use VPN is to access your own services without exposing them to the public internet, no need for port forwarding if you can VPN into your own network.
kaspersky have many spying allegation against government agency and the AV is now banned for any government use.
Windows defender is currently the best AV in my opinion
III. Punch in the 4-digit security code sent to your cell. Hit Verify.
Now select the row beneath "Verify your identity" which contains the final 2 characters of your phone number.
Pop in the final 4 digits of your phone number. Hit Send Code.
Key in the 7-digit security code sent to your cell. Hit Verify.
Next you see the "Break free from your passwords" page. Hit the Get It Now button to see the "Download the Microsoft Authenticator app" page. Thankfully, we already did this in the beginning. Select Next. A QR code appears. Can you guess the next step?
I use the internet naked all the time. Dont know if id go as far as piehole though.
11:27 '666' and '33' seem a bit odd lol
great eye, u caught it. Thanks for pointing it out!
Numbers have no meaning other than being just numbers.
Hey Logan, how are you living? Will you please start making the kind of videos that you always wanted to make and where talking about in the old days? Right now it is just a lot of ramblings. I enjoyed the "retro" gaming rig but other then that content like this is lackluster. You had hopes and dreams and now you tell me about windows 10... :(
hello excuse me
Kaspersky is Swiss now, but have a look
Fuck that shit. That is THE worst software I've ever had the displeasure of using.
OMG this guy's style 🤣🤣🤣 his hair and beard.. lmao circa 2003 .. it's so ridiculous
When my bro does a fresh Install of windows, he turns off firewall, antivirus, everything. It drives him crazy, and he is too lazy to learn how to make firewall rules and all that.
I do too and haven't had a virus for twenty years.
I though this was going to be something smart and secure or whatever, like regedit or policy edits, instead it's some common sense stuff like use a password to login and VPN lmao
This is to help the masses. I did say I could consider doing some more advanced stuff. I think pihole might be a good start
@@teksyndicate pfblockerNG FTW.
Secure all windows. Especially ones on the ground level.
hello excuse me
Windows defender is more than enough today. This video seems it has lot of sponsors
a lot... meaning only one
5:27 -- My understanding is that w10 pro upgraded to w11pro will eventually force you to signed in with a Microsoft account.
11:22 -- A company known to be run and operated in Russia with possible, now, dubious track record with the war in Ukraine? Okay, give me some of what you're smoking.
Nobody has given me any proof regarding kapersky... But they keep saying this. Most of their key operations are in Switzerland. I'll retract if someone provides actual evidence.
Using a Microsoft account to log into your PC is adequately secure. You should be using an exremely long password, 2FA and phone sign-in. Boom you're secure. Saying that a local account is more secure is just irrational Microsoft hate.
I made my Win11 system secure by replacing it with Manjaro.
🤢 I'd rather use Arch than Manjaro
I made my windows 11 system secure by switching to Ubuntu years before they even decided to make Windows 11.
I think you just exposed that windows key for hackers 😐
I bought it just for them
I don't wanna be an evangelist. I understand why people don't use Linux. And like... to an extent computers are tools and you should use what works for you.
But that being said, I would be _extremely_ interested in your take of installing Linux and getting it ready to be a daily driver. And I guess generally your experiences.
Oh and btw, when do you stream? (in UTC)
Anyway, peace
I wish I could use my audio programs (the ones I use to make music) on Linux without massive headaches.
If I stream, it's on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or maybe Sunday at around 12am utc
twitch.tv/midnightdojo
@@teksyndicate I first used linux after watching your old videos on ubuntu back in the day. I'm no pro and don't use linux as a daily driver but for special projects. I'm surprised the equipment you use doesn't have some Linux alternative, but I guess it's still a small ecosystem.
install GNU
don't forget, use the microsoft account. if U ever need 2 re-authorize the OS! U mean ''they'' R a chrome OS want'a B? chrome really sucks! sorry, but. oh my sneekers! good luck with this!
Step one. Install linux
Number 1: Buy a Mac.
Lol... No.
Secure Windows? Are you serious??
Is that supposed to be a joke..??? 😁😆😂🤣
