Windows stopped support for XP, it runs on old chips, by now there are 100s of hacks that work easily, if you use XP for online you already got DOS, ransome ware, spyware miner ware with no hope, no support, no patches, permanently lose everything. If you replace the OS with Linux you have a PC more secure than windows 11. Yes 11. If not XP is only good for offline hacking tests, run programs you are OK if they break your machine or give to a child to play old offline games, be sure to wipe the drive, upload with tons of junk data and wipe again and remove the wifi chip

Use open source software whenever possible. Even if you don't plan to look at the source code yourself, you know many eyes are already on it. It is unlikely that things like backdoors or nefarious functions make their way into source code that every person is free to look at.

I have offline workstations connected to a tethered internal network, no security software to clog up the performance. The only connection to the internet is a USB stick that gets scanned daily. I have a little mangy dusty desktop for online stuff, filled to the brim with the latest anti-malware apps. Perfect for emails and internet nonsense.

Now Feb. 2021 congrats on your four birthdays I missed. A little humor... very little. So far in this crazy world, you are the only one who have touched on where or how a virus can infect your inline device. I am a seasoned auto tech, so my skill-set allows me to disassemble your vehicle into 3,281 parts, tell you what each one does, how it works, put it together, run like new and doesn’t leak! Ya, I am that guy. I have used the phrase “Drive by tune-up” for decades. I am asked by HP to plug-in my Dell laptop to the router so it can connect with a new printer that is WiFi enabled, but not Bluetooth. The laptop, router and printer are within 4 feet of each other. The printer has a bi-directional connector on the back, same as my laser jet, unfortunately (So Far) they have not found a print driver for my offline Dell Latitude D620 XP PRO with Fujitsu HD. (The repair guy replaced the IMB and told me the Fujitsu will last forever/ sad for IBM).
My question is “How viruses find the laptop other than my 34 year old son using it?” I don’t use this online, but if plugged directly into the printer, the driver has to come from HP! Using Bluetooth would work but the printer is not a Bluetooth model plus, I would still need a driver to spool docs to the printer.
I was forced into early retirement because of severely worn joints, it have to watch my money. Most couples would not dream or no cable, Netflix or cell, but my last cell was 2008 flip. We get by cause I fix our stuff, bank bill pay and happy wit $20 internet.
Please don’t knock XP PRO, you seem like a nice young guy, don’t make me stop the car and come tack there! On the farm our phones where wood, many cars had no stereos, just AM, we said “Pledge of Allegiance” in school and had a flag! The American one. But gas was $0.20 cents per gallon and Obama.....well he still never had a job or paycheck. Just a couch and friends dinner. I was mowing yards, throwing hay and plowing & bought vehicles.
The XP Pro was the business workhorse allowing millions like me the wonderful features like “Publisher”, “Word”, PPT and others to create a “Service Manual” R&R, wides, complete.
This allows a repair by any good tech to diagnose & fix my 1967 C10 truck. It’s modified to work and look like $50,000 truck for pennies with fuel injection 03 Tahoe V8, power windows, remote keyless, lights to illuminate the area outside for my beautiful wife as we enter onto custom two-tone leather buckets, console, matching leather door panels, cargo lights and open the tailgate with a button, power seats, content theft, 22.5 gallon rear fuel tank complete with purge, locking differential, overdrive automatic built on my bench for 600 horse ponies, but longevity, external cooler, electric fans, A/C, heater core that can be changed in 30 minutes from engine side and digital gauges & bar graphs, warning chimes and performance at 21 MPG highway. Best is, no cost for plates or taxes, just insurance and sound protected with epoxy sealer inside all panels over thicker steel than a tractor. So any tech can plug in, diagnose root cause and repair it with off the self GM parts, except for a handful that are better custom parts. Auto ASE Master since 1978-Retired. 62 and mad!
Nice video, informative and interesting, but nothing blew up or caught fire! Work on it!

You can create a "story" thats 15-20 words long and easily remember the long password for your primary password for LastPass. NOTE: Regarding router firmware and its update,
Most ISP's like Verizon, Time Warner, Cable Vision and Optimum Online (a cable vision subsidiary company) ALL have automatic update for their routers.
Also if you unplug your router for more than 30 seconds and re-plug it. The firmware will do a recheck and update on its own. Though its always good to visually check.
But in most cases these days of 2017 and 2018 most newer versions of routers especially those that are capable of Fiber Optic connection do auto updates on their firmware's.

Advanced System Care is kicking butt for me.
That and Process Lasso. Hell, with that, I can grab any and all nasty processes and have Process Lasso Always Terminate them. Now that's something.
In fact, I recommend Process Lasso for everyone.
As far as Win10 goes, yeah, I'm not a fan, but since my computer cannot handle it (had more crashes within a week of the free upgrade than I had within the first month of having my computer), I'm not about to upgrade my current hardware with money I don't have for that OS, especially since as a retro gamer, compatibility issues are high enough as things stand.
Speaking of internet, you didn't mention the one thing I thought you would, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). I think that is the best way to be secure, even on an open wi-fi connection.

I do some of this stuff on my Mac & Windows tablet.
I go a step further by only using Chrome's flash, HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger & Ublock Origin (Disabled for RUclips). I also back up stuff on the cloud & USB.

The basics to keep my laptop protected:
    1. Use macOS (or Linux) - the biggest, inherent defense!
    2. Full drive encryption
    3. OpenDNS on my router - right at my home network perimeter, and tweak DNS for any public WiFi usage to OpenDNS
    4. Firefox Quantum browser, tweaked for its security settings & to remove data/cookies upon closing
    5. ScriptSafe extension for Firefox - only whitelist the bare minimum necessary on my usual sites
    6. A VM sandbox for browsing to potentially hostile sites, that gets reset back to default upon exit

    Step 1: Install Linux
Just kidding. Linux isn't much safer than using Windows. Linux is still prone to viruses and hackers as much as Windows is, but because Linux has significantly less market share compared to Windows in the desktop world, hackers don't have much incentive to develop malware for Linux. If everybody decided to switch to Linux, hackers will follow.

Got my USB-C Yubico's a few days ago... My new Google PixelBook also arrived a few days ago, and these new Yubico USB-C's work with it great. So based on your prior advice in earlier videos, I now use Yubico devices as well as LastPass. I have used Chromebooks since the very first one came out and I feel pretty damn secure now. I can even use the Yubico type C's on my Note 8.
