  • This video is about disassembling and assembling the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens to repair the zooming and focusing problems. The zooming of the lens did not work between 100 and 135mm, and also the focusing of the lens was stuck. This problem was caused by mechanic problems inside the lens, so I had to disassemble the lens to repair that. In this video I show you how I did that.

    This video was a huge help for me when I did a repair on my lens. It was great- easy to follow the procedure step by step. Also very precise and I don't think it is possible to make a mistake following your instructions. I'm very happy that my lens is alive again as it is one of my favorites. Thank you!

    Thank you very much for posting this video, my Canon EF 28-135 didn't zoom out to 28mm because something was stuck at aprox. 50mm.
    After disassembly I was able to put back one of the cables that came out of it's place.
    Then I fixed the cable in place with a piece of tape.
    After reassembly the lens works just fine now.
    Without this video I didn't know waht to do.

    Fantastic tutorial, I have dared to repair my 28-135 according this instruction, took way long, it helped removing pumping auto focus up to 100mm, above it is still not functioning. It is likely the zoom brush seen in 6:30, some pins of mine are twisted, one is broken. How can I get this part?

    Would I have to disassemble the entire lens if I wanted to replace the lens filter frame that is on the front barrel? Part CY1-2823

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      I'm not sure because I haven't done that before, but I think you have to remove the front lens element, then you cn remove the screws underneath it which hold the filter holder, then you have to twist it to release it from the middle cover tubes.

    I have this lens. My particular one has a really bad case of lens creep. When you turn it down the glass wants to slide right out just from the gravity. It looks pretty easy to disassemble, but is there any way to fix the lens creep?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      Yes, this an easy fix. Disassemble the lens until the USM motor is removed. Then tighten the three screws (wide head, silver color) which connects the front lens element with the inner lens tube.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Hmm, the screws you mentioned were in there so tight that it took a lot of effort to get them out with a driver that fit them perfectly. I can't imagine I'll be able to get them back in tighter than that. Guess I'm just going to take the entire lens apart, examine it and reassemble hoping it will be better when it's back together.

    • @FastJohnnyNardGard
      @FastJohnnyNardGard 4 года назад

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Nevermind. In the end it was definitely those three screws. The only thing I wonder about now is that the barrel holding the inner lens(es) had a lot of grease on it. It is significantly less greasy now because I was touching it a lot. Great video, there were a few areas you could have touched on just a bit more but this is my first time disassembling a camera lens and it was much easier than I expected, especially with your video.

    Hey there I think I found the problem. At the mechanism connector at 9:51 was completely disconnected and jingling around. The screws are completely missing however and it looks like they are smaller than the other screws I’ve been unscrewing. Do you know the size of those screws so maybe I could order replacement ones somewhere?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  Год назад +1

      That is a quite common problem. I don't know the size of the screw. Are both of the screws missing? Have you checked the inside of the lens, maybe the screws are there somewhere maybe stuck in lens grease?

    • @callumcunningham8360
      @callumcunningham8360 Год назад

      @@CamerasLensesEtc I opened the whole thing up and didn’t see them. I know they are rather small so it’s possible I missed them somewhere, but I was able to find replacement screws by looking up the Manual that had all the parts listed. I’m hoping that will be right

      Here it is:
      www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-IS-USM-Lens-Base-Zooming-Guide-Repair-Part-EH1642/372711013114
      In general, go to ebay, search for the name of the lens "canon 28 135" in this case, then click on "all" as the section, then choose "Digital camera parts", then sort the list as "price + shipping: lowest first".
      My guess is that this lane part is the same in the Canon 17-85mm lens, so you might check the ebay search results, maybe it is cheaper.

    I'm really not sure if the risk @ 11:00 is worth it. If the loose focusing element crashes into the back of the front lens group, the damage could exceed the lens' worth. Remove the front lens group beforehand (mark its position/orientation before you remove it) and then @ 11:00 push the cam barrel outwards and - after marking its orientation in the cam barrel - grab it carefully and screw it out, then store it in a secure place.

      When you want to autofocus, what does the lens do? Hunting for focus?
      A few ideas:
      - is the USM motor and the focusing lens element is connected with the lever? If you move the manual focus ring, does it twists the focusing lens element inside?
      - Is the rear cover connected correctly (flex cable if the switch)? When you view the autofocus mode, does the camera shows AF or MF? If you switch the AF/MF switch does it change in the camera?

    • @ZeidanRacha
      @ZeidanRacha 4 года назад

      you are so awesome for such a prompt response thanks!
      so I went back and opened it up, it turns out the aperture flex cable was not inserted correctly. I fixed that, and the error message 00 went away, and I am now able to change the aperture and it shows on the camera window, and I can see electronic contact again with the lens. What is happening now is, I cannot click a picture in AF, and when it tries to focus, I hear a slow sound, and it cannot auto focus anymore.
      The answer is yes to all your questions, but I did not understand this part of your question: "- Is the rear cover connected correctly (flex cable if the switch)?
      On MF I can take photos fine, and I can use the zoom ring to focus, when on AF, I cannot focus or take pictures.
      I must say too, one of my flex cable covers on the motherboard broke off, so I tried to stick it back on with a piece of tape, do you think I need a new motherboard? do you sell those?
      Many thanks for your help!
      Racha

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      - Is the rear cover connected correctly (flex cable if the switch)?: it could happen that the AF/MF switch cable is not connected, and the lens is stuck in MF mode. You can check that by switching the AF/MF switch, and the focusing method in Q screen should change accordingly.
      As I understand, the problem now is the focusing seems very slow, so the USM motor seems stuck or sticky?
      Can you confirm that if you move the manual focus ring, the second lens element (counting from the front) is moving with it?

    • @ZeidanRacha
      @ZeidanRacha 4 года назад

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Hey, thank you for your time. Yes when I switch the button from AF to MF, I see that the ONE SHOT disappears inside the Q screen. I can't confirm the second lens element is moving with the manual focus ring, I can't see properly. Do you think I should repeat the video from the start and take the lens apart and start again?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад

      In the video at 25:38 I connect the lever of the focusing lens element with the fork of the USM motor. My suspicion is that they are not connected, so the USM motor does not moves the focusing lens element.
      At 34:00 I check if the manual focusing ring moves the second, focusing lens element: on the side of it there is a part for the lever (so the side of the second lens element is not completely round but there is a part where the lever goes out of it), and by that part you can see if it is moving.
