  • This video is about repairing the wobbling front lens tube of the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. I had a Canon 18-200mm IS lens which had a very loose front lens tube. The front lens was wobbling too much at 200mm. So I had to disassemble the lens, tighten the screws inside, then assemble the lens. In this video I show you how I did that.

    My lens wasn't wobbling - the zoom had jammed. Turned out 1 of 3 brass guide lugs (see them around 10:28) on the Zoom had come out because the screw holding it in had sheared. Using the lens with just 2 guide lugs now! Helpful video - Thanks.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Actually, the Auto Focus is now quite slow and doesn't always get it right. Is there some reset or calibration method?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 месяца назад

      @@WINGNUT307 Most likely the problem is caused by the missing brass guide lugs. Do you have focusing problems towards the end of the zoom range (200mm), but not in the beginning (18mm)? The problem could be that the lens tubes bends downwards when you zoom to 200mm, and that causing the focusing lens element lever to stuck between the zoom tubes, and that makes focusing slow and inaccurate. You might try to switch to manual focus, and check how much force you have to use to turn the focusing ring at 18mm vs 200mm. To solve this problem, you have to put back the third guide lug.

      @WINGNUT307 4 месяца назад

      @@CamerasLensesEtc You are probably right. Focusing is fine up to around 50mm. Beyond that i get problems. I don't notice anything unusual when manual focusing. I can't replace the lug as the old sheared screw is still in place and I don't see how I can get it out! And how would I get a new screw? I'll just have to live with it.

    Many thanks - fixed my non-zooming 18-200 by taking it apart using this video, couple of bits of black plastic fell out, back together and all is good - sent you a small donation to say thanks.

    It took me awhile to find the slot for the silver pin (~12:20). If you can't find it, try turning the lens upside-down so that the sliding grey piece can fall into view.

      Same here - also, at around 8:55 when you disconnect the middle lens cover, it is useful to first mark one of the 3 screw locations so that you can put the cover back in the right orientation.

    This helped me fix an issue with my lens where it would not zoom completely to the ends of the range and had a slight grinding resistance. It turns out that one of the brass pins inside had come loose and was binding the mechanism. Using this video, I was able to replace the pin, reassemble the lens, and had it working again. It's a nice lens when it works properly but seems to be a bit fragile.

    Is the lens supposed to fall out of it's original position when pointing the camera down or did I get a defective lens?

      Zoom creep is a quite common among this lens, and I don't consider that defect.

      Hard to tell... I would say use a screwdriver which fits perfectly... there are PH000 screwdrivers which have thicker head, and not fitting perfectly in the head of the screw, and it shave off the head.
      But in this case it would be hard to tell if it fits, because you can't see the screw.

    • @daelra
      @daelra 2 года назад

      @@CamerasLensesEtc It might be the shape of the end of PH000 drive I have. I have two. The one with a bigger handle is more pointed and would definitely strip the screw. I have a shorter 'spectacles' ph000 'keychain' screwdriver with a blunter end which seems to fit better but the 'handle' is too small to get any purchase. I was thinking of getting an iFixit kit but seeing the ends of the two screwdrivers I have are so different, I'm worried the PH000 will be too pointed too.
      I'm definitely getting the head of the screwdriver in the right place.
