  • My Canon zoom Lens EF-s 18-135mm 1:3.5 -5.6 IS had some focus issue, because of some parts has come loose, but I could repair the lens again without new spare parts, so it turned out to be a success :-).

You saved my lens! I really appreciate how clear and precise your visual instructions were. Who knew it was just a loose screw causing me such a headache. Easy, straight-forward. Thank you!

Mine had the same problem. I could hear something rattling around, and after following this video I found the same screw loose inside (and its buddy still in its threads, but partially unscrewed). I put the runaway screw back, tightened both, and aligned the zoom brush. But I had to remove two screws (around 8:30 in the video) to get the focus mechanism out, exactly where the narrator said he thought there should be a couple of screws at 20:25. Without them, I suspect his lens is going to continue to give him trouble. One other suggestion: I found it worked better to have the AF/MF switch in the AF position when reassembling, it fit back in place more easily than if it was in MF. Finally, note that this lens has a DC motor focus mechanism, and with the switch in AF the focus ring is locked to the motor -- unlike lenses with USM or STM focus motors that typically allow the focus ring to turn even in AF. I wonder if his original problem was that he did not realize this and thought it was jammed in the AF position? Canon also offers what look like two higher end versions this same lens, but with STM or USM focus -- for a lot more money.

A much easier way to remove that plastic ring at 3:19 is to take off the metal ring first. Then push the retaining pins from the inside using a small tool. It pops out easily and will not cause damage to the plastic ring.

Lovely LOGICAL approach to the job....I often spoke your words slightly before you as we both did the job.
Excellent and gives the average person enough confidence to tackle this and other jobs.
    Beautifully done.
    Thanks from Canada North
My guess is someone forced the focus ring when it was in AF mode and stripped/pulled the screw out of it's hole where it later jammed and prevented toe ring turning.

thanks Wayne, I would also guess that someone forced the focus ring and in that way, when it was in AF mode and the plastic gears came out of place. Cheers from Denmark

I have same lens with same ratling noise inside. Thanks for this repair video, it will be good for me to fix my lens. Focus works in it, somewhat, but is noisy AF when filming. I was wondering is there somekind of lubricant you can but inside of zoom?

First of all thanks for the videos.
Furthermore I have a question. Have you ever fixed a Sigma AF APO 400/5,6 (1988-1995) lens? Or dou you have lens design drawing or anything else for that?
    Thank you in advance.

Hi mikeno62! You've missed the two screws which securing the focus motor in place at the reassembly. Without them the focus could loosen again.

should be yes, since both canon 2000d and EF-s 18-135 are efs mount
