  • This video is about disassembling the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, then replacing the focus flex cable, and then assembling the lens. I had a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens which had problems with focusing, and this problem was caused by the broken focus flex cable. In this video I'll show you how to replace the cable with a new one.

    Superb guide, thanks! I saved my 18-55, and flawless assembled without any step-back need.
    The video is detailed deep enough, and have exactly the right speed not to miss any process. Special thanks that not only the dismantling but the assembly is also guided through.
    In certain steps, you helped me quite a lot to rotate and move the lens - just right in speed - through I could also check back my build status.
    Big respect.

    I had a CANON EOS 18-55mm IS STM lens which has different internal than what was shown, however it gave an idea on how to open my lens and fix it. I damaged the zooming mechanism of my one.. And by the way, it was my first time ever to disassemble a DSLR camera lens. Thank you for this video.

    Really great tutorial. Saved my lens.
    Also, really bad design by Canon. The more you use the zoom, the quicker the focus ribbon cable will fatigue and break. My cable was literally in two pieces.

    Great, thanks for the detailed video-guide!
    I will try to replace the cable without unmount the zoom part, as read in a comment. If this operation will result hard, I will proceed step by step as described in the video guide. I just ordered the flex cables (10 pieces for 3,70€). Thanks again!

    Excellent video, really helped me fix my lens.
    I found it tricky to get the alignment of the new focus flex cable just right. I installed the focus brush straight after putting the new flex cable in and I could see that I hadn't got the alignment quite right. The brushes were tracking off to one side of the traces on the cable at one end. Took a few goes to get things right.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 года назад

      The place where you adhere the cable has edges which can guide you: the cable should be aligned, right next to it. Maybe I should have said that in the video.

    Great tutorial. Now have a working lens again rather than shelling out for a new one, which I struggled to find a decent replacement zoom len at a reasonable price.
    I had to rewind a few times when re-assembling. It was hard to tell which brush you were sticking in. Which way up riser bit that screws to the side. I struggled to figure out how you was attaching the little clip that mounts to the riser as there was nothing to screw it to. I finally realised that the bottom ring that it screws to had rotated clockwise.
    After re-assembling I found my AF-MF button wouldn't slide. You need to make sure you line the button up.
    Not wanting to fully put all screw's before testing again I didn't put the screws into the camera contacts but found it showed a f00 this is due to it failing to make proper connection.

    Great video. I dropped my lens and now it works intermittently. As if sometimes the contacts are working and sometimes not. I will attempt to open it up and take a look thanks to your video. Any idea what I should look for?

      I would check the teeth of the focus barrel first. And also if there is any broken pieces inside.

    Thank you so much, a great tutorial. Unfortunately my lens keeps having problem (err99) even after replacing the flex cable. I can hear the focus working, so something else must be faulty. Any thoughts?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад

      ERR99 is caused by the camera, ans not the lens. Usually it is caused by faulty shutter/ mirror mechanism.

    I didn't go so deep as to remove the rubber sleeve, but I moved the mechanismhigh enough to access the flex and replace it successfully. Always buy the 5-pack, so if you break one flex, you don't have to wait another 10-12 days for another one. I also find the adhesive on the replacement parts is too weak, the flex could go loose sooner than the original.

    Are the same focus flex cables used for the IS, IS II and IS STM lenses? I need one for my IS lens but i only see cables for IS II

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  4 года назад +1

      As I remember, the cable is the same for the IS and IS II, and I don't know if it is the same for the IS STM... I haven't disassembled that before.

    I had the broken autofocus cable,
    I replaced the cable, but the autofocus still does not work.
    could you suggest me, where to look for the problem
    Greetings

      Is the AF hunting, or the motor is not working at all?
      If it is hunting, then check if the cable that you replaced has no contamination on the surface, also, check the wires if they are connected with a multimeter. Then, clean the connector with alcohol+microfiber cloth or a fiberglass pen. Make sure that the brush which is sliding on the flat cable is not bent, and all of the connectors are on the right lane and connected to the flat cable. Also, make sure that the connector of the AF unit and the gear which moves the autofocusing element are connected. Try to rotate the AF ring in AF mode, and check if it is spins the motor.
      Well, that's it for start.

    very nice video this helped me a lot with my tear down and assembly. Are there any flex cable suppliers you would recommend? perhaps that ship to South Africa?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc

      I just buy flex cables from ebay. My suspicion is that they all came from the same factory. I didn't have any problem with them.

    I have a problem. My 18-55 fall down from table to floor and the aperture is not in it-s place and I can see the flaps of the aperture. Can you tell me how to put the aperture in it-s place ?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 года назад +1

      If the aperture blades were fall off, then it is quite hard job to put them back. Not impossible, but it takes lots of time. The inside mechanics of the Canon 18-55 lenses are quite similar, so you can use my videos to disassemble the lens, remove the inner lens group, and it is quite easy to remove the aperture unit. Then the difficult part is to put back the aperture blades on their original place. The lens is very cheap, so my opinion is just to buy an another one instead of repairing it.
