  • With the new year closing in, a lot of people might be thinking about trying out the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game for the first time. So, I thought I'd add to what I covered in my previous video on the topic with some updates after we've seen new sets appearing for the game. There's the Battle Of Osgiliath Starter Set of course but also the new Battlehosts for Rohan, Minas-Tirith, Isengard and Mordor.

    ► Start Here Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/...
    ► Free Quickstart Rules & Battlehost Rules www.warhammer-community.com/m...
    With the new(ish) set and the Battlehosts being a good way for you to dive in alongside free rules, this is as good a time as any for you to be trying out the game without a massive dump of cash! You can also combine the ideas that I cover here with those from my original video to teach the game in a fun way for newcomers and veterans.

    Don't worry too much about what army to play. Just pick the ones you like the most. Get a basic set of those. And move on from there. Get the basic troops, a hero of that army you really like and some special troop.

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  6 месяцев назад +1

      Aye, good advice. As I mentioned in my first video, you can get a lot out of the game just getting a hero you like and one box set of the basic plastic troops for pretty much all the factions.

    Much appreciated this, as I didn't realize the Battle Host stats were available for free. My buddy just picked up the Mordor box, and I realized I have enough to essentially create the Rohan one with my minis from 20 years ago. Getting ready to re-paint the my original Eomer (mounted & on foot) now that I've developed my skills. Looking forward to doing the metal sculpt justice after all these years.

    My two cents on the Battle of Osgiliath set is that, as the designated "Evil" team player in my two-person playgroup, the Osgiliath set horribly favors the Good faction in both matched play and in the included scenarios. I did not win a single scenario when my girlfriend and I were playing through them with me as the Evil player, but the instant we tried the first one with me as the Good team, the victory for the Forces of Good was even more one-sided than it was when she beat me in that same scenario while I was the Evil player. Plus, when it comes to long-run investment, the Mordor player gets the short end of the stick there too, because Gothmog has a terrible cost-benefit ratio in terms of in-game points, and he and the Witch-King are literally the only entry-level choices for Mordor Heroes that are relatively affordable/aren't in Resin-or-Metal Hell. Meanwhile someone investing in Gondor with the Gondor-half of the Osgiliath Set and their Gondor Battlehost has far more options for more heroes leading more warbands (Faramir, Madril, Damrod + Gandalf = Four Heroes total, twice as many Heroes and Warbands as someone playing Mordor with the its corresponding Battlehost added). And of course there's the elephant in the room for the Osgiliath set's obscene Bow quota for Gondor not really having any good workarounds out-of-box.

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  24 дня назад

      There are some issues with the set but I still think it gives you a good starting point for "collecting" Middle-earth, especially if you're more focused on doing smaller scale stuff and being a bit more narratively focused perhaps. I do agree the mass of bows on the Good side is frankly madness although the Morannon Orcs are a pretty tough kill and can do some serious damage if they get into combat. Gothmog is also a beast, at least in the games I've played.

    • @SevenSwordsExia
      @SevenSwordsExia 18 дней назад

      @@BecauseOfDragons I may have come off a bit whiny or with too many complaints. That wasn't really my intention but after re-reading I can definitely see that. The set is definitely flawed, but it also makes for a great MESBG gateway drug.

    Great primer video for folks new to MESBG. I suspect you might have some limitations on what you can say, but I think it bears noting that many of the figures in these army sets are very old sculpts. They are certainly functional, but compared to some of GW’s latest offerings for their other licenses the poses and detail here are static and dated. The Osgiliath set has some new models (Gothmog!), the three ranger leaders and the Osgiliath ruins for instance. These are great, but for nearly $200 it would have been nice to see some refreshed love from the Perrys, and maybe convinced some of us older players to invest in the new set. I was also a little disappointed that GW didn’t take the opportunity to update the three Ranger leaders and make the more competitive. Their models are some of the nicest plastics in the game, but Faramir doesn’t have the juice to stand up to the Witch King when Boromir is in the stable.

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah - it is a bit of a shame that the miniatures, for the most part, were the older plastics. Still, I didn't have any of them so it was a bit of a bonus for me to get my hands on them. I still hope we'll see a proper revamp of the miniature range in the future but it might be a fool's hope!

      Seeing if you can find the books online first is a good shout if you just want to try out the game for sure. It's what I did. Once I realised my friends were interested in playing more then I snagged the books.

    Nice introduction to the game. It's a pity most of the minis are quite old and tired compared to what else is out there, especially 3d printer models which are comparable in price to the old GW figures. With the loss of the LOTR licence, not sure How long these GW minis will be available.

    • @BecauseOfDragons
      @BecauseOfDragons  7 месяцев назад

      I'm still crossing my fingers that we'll see more revamped miniatures in the new year once they've worked out whatever stumbling block they wandered into this year. I do really like the offerings from other companies though - Medbury is high on my list when it comes to Elves!

      There are many models available from GW. Many new models as well. Yes some were sculpted a way back when the movies were released, but they are well made in solid plastic, they look great , paint up well and serve their purpose. Plus the fact that new models are not rolling off the production line continuously means that the entry point for this game is very cheap compared to other GW games. I have been playing this game since 2004 and I still don't own all the models, but I have plenty of armies and enjoy playing it regularly with my friends. I don't need new models to enjoy a well made game.
