Our hunting group (5 guys) have used these slugs exclusively since ~2002. They WERE awesome...but around 2008-09 we began noticing a dramatic decrease in tissue damage and have found 3 bullets that failed to expand (the rest passed thru). We autopsy (butcher) 12-15 deer per year...and we are beyond convinced it's the round failing and are shopping for a new load. Bye Winchester.
I used to use these! Now I'm Hornady SST all the way. Those PG's were way below advertised velocity, partially why they didn't expand. But even if they were exiting the bore at advertised speed, at 100 yards they would be back down to 1500 fps and crap! Thank you for this test. Unexpected results....
While it didn't open, that slug cut a huge path from end to end and a hit that hard and deep will put a deer down if on target. I imagine what it could do to a damn moose shoulder! Might even be a bear round, with penetration that deep and and a churned up wound channel behind.
agreed...and a retest will happen in the future. As far as tumbling....the round didnt' KEYHOLE on impact....but the not stabilized round did cause tumbling after impact
I agree with Tombs Clawtooth. Sabot slugs should only be shot out of RIFLED barrels. They will tumble in the air and probably impact the target on it's side. Try it on a paper target, you can see the hole is shaped like the slug's side profile, not a round hole. Sabot slugs are balanced to fly straight when spinning, just like a regular bullet. Foster type slugs are head-heavy like a badminton shuttlecock and fly straight because the head is heavier than the tail. Please do a vid with plain ol' Rem sluggers or Winchester plain slugs
No tumbling at all...I checked for that...the wound channel is caused by a front facing impact. Trust me I checked for it. A rifled barrel is the only thing I can think of that would help, so a retest is in the near future
Please try to get a hold of a Winchester 400 grain (Platinum tip) Sabo slug. Advertised velocity of 1700 ft per second. The recall is insane on these rounds along with the penetration! Perfect around for a barrier test, ballistic gel, up to 1'of Steel. By far the hardest hitting round I've ever shot!
it's hard to judge the performance of the round when you're using an 18.5 inch barrel, most shotguns meant for hunting have at least a 24inch barrel. how could you possibly expect to get 1700 fps from a barrel missing 6 or so inches? no velocity no expansion.
Well you're right in the fact that it should be expanding even at slower velocities. These slugs still had a ton of kinetic energy and a great sized wound channel. It would get the job done, but at $2.50 per round, you should be getting what you pay for.
So am I....I have been friends with CRH for a few years now...and we both have wanted to do a video together for sometime now. Glad to have you at my Channel Welcome to GY6vids
This is what I was thinking as well, but the round didn't tumble in this video. The projectiles path was straight and even, and didn't show signs of any tumbling, it just failed to expand. Granted it would have better velocity out of a longer Rifled barrel, but it should have at least done something at 1500fps at 30feet
It is clear from my observation and experience that the shotgun has a smooth bore barrel. Thus the lack of rifling lets the bullet tumble before impact as shown by both of the impact marks on the entrance of the Ballistic gel. (If you look close!) If typical hollow point bullets hit going sideways, they will not expand all that much, particularly projectiles designed for tough game, or deep penetration. I have used those brand and type of slug in my Remington 11/87 with Hastings Rifled barrel and gotten exceptional expansion and deep-line of sight penetration! You blew it!
you need a rifled barrel. that is 100% the reason for your failed test. HP bullets have to be flying nose first to expand. the wound cavity that you're seeing is due to the round tumbling bc it's not stabilized.
Smooth...and that is the only thing that I think might be a problem...because these are meant for rifled barrels. Either way though....its good to know to stay the hell away from them, if you have a Smooth bore
It is much more lethal because you are multiplying the wound channel X the amount of shots you hit......so that test is pretty straight forward to answer for ya.
The slug hit straight on and went straight through in a straight line. Please explain everyone who is saying he shot it through a smooth barrel so it didn't expand. Explain How the round spinning will affect its expansion or velocity?
Jesus Jones When it's spinning it has centrifugal force acting on it so that might help with the expansion but I think that the main thing was that it was going too slow for it to expand.
I have been shooting these for years. My .270 drops deer in their tracks. The Partition Gold isn't as quick to kill. The deer always seem to run 50-60 yards when hit well using these slugs. I think that a smaller projectile traveling twice as fast is just more effective. Another thought…. you need a longer barrel to get the full velocity. Maybe that would get you expansion.
I use these slugs, and I managed to retrieve one of these slugs from a deer. And let me tell you, I couldn't be more impressed. They opened up as soon as it hit the deer. I don't think the hell is hard enough. Try molding a pig shoulder into the gell.
All rounds hit at different velocities, the stated velocity is what was captured by Winchester on average from a longer barrel most likely. Even though it wasn't going as fast as it would from a longer barrel, it still should be expanding in some fashion.
Yes Flesh...not hide. Even though that would give it more resistance, it still is lacking expansion either way. A re test will happen down the road for sure
I understand that, but at this range the slug is still flying straight and has yet to tumble. You can tell by the entrance wound that it didn't keyhole, and didn't even tumble as it went through the gel. So we should have seen a little expansion at 1500fps.
I believe I will be retesting this round later on. I do believe the velocity had something to do with it....but to have ZERO EXPANSION at 1500fps is not good either way you slice it.
I know who you are peberly, thank you for your loyalty as a fan! I was contacted by CLEAR BALLISTICS . com and they sponsored me as an official tester for their Gel.
Oh it definitely has to do with the non rifled barrel and length of barrel. Even at 1500fps though, there should have been some sort of expansion. A retest is definitely going to happen.
Good to know...thank you for the info....Im almost certain these rounds aren't preforming due to the short length of my barrel and lack of rifling. I plan on retesting these in the future
Oh I tested the 7.62x54R round right after this test on the remaining gel.....TUMBLES LIKE CRAZY and blew up my table LOL You're right though about the NON tumble from this slug....non at all thanks for the response
look like you are shooting at blocks of glass. well done on the gel. i always enjoy watching deer slugs, but DAMN, look at that cavity thats some power
No I didn't, I just dont use bone for straight up tests. Ballistics Gel tests are used mainly to see the effects of rounds when they impact. That way the tests are completely identical!
Great video super powerful slugs very interesting to be shot out especially if it was a smoothbore and still hit that hard and not tumble very interesting 🤔🙂👍
Yes the slug dumps a lot of energy, but its not doing what the advertiser says it does, and at $2.50 per round, you would expect to get what you pay for.
Just waitin for him to shoot his chronograph
Sabot slugs are meant to be fired in a rifled barrel; the sabot engages the rifling.
Going back and watching these, your production quality has gotten SO MUCH BETTER. Thank you sir.
Can you redo this one? Using a rifled barrel please? I buy these slugs but have yet to shoot anything with them.
Thank you....glad you're enjoying the videos.
Thank you....Glad you're enjoying them that much

I agree...
the gel I use has been pretested for FBI Grade standards prior to my use of it
I plan on it. Maybe not heads up...but they both are on the list.
Thank you, I will .....MUCH MUCH MORE TO COME!
Thank you.Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you brotha! Glad you enjoyed it
agreed...and a retest will happen in the future. As far as tumbling....the round didnt' KEYHOLE on impact....but the not stabilized round did cause tumbling after impact
I agree....I plan on doing a follow up test.

Right I agree rifled slugs are for smoothbore most even say that on the box the shots still performed better than I thought🙂
Thank you....Im glad you noticed....over a 1,000 comments a day isn't easy to stay up on.
Crazy those didn't expand. Buy a chunk of meat to shoot them in and see what happens. Still a cool vid!
I see the problem.. you fired the weapon left handed
Jairred Stephens *wrong handed*
I plan on it! Thanks for the ideas
Thank you....
Welcome to GY6vids
Yes...its on the list, got the shells already.
Glad you enjoyed the test. Thank you

I agree....some expansion should have occurred. I dont have access to a 6.8 or a 6.5, but if I do, Im definitely testing it.
Yes there is, and I plan on it.

At 100 yards you can expect this velocity from a 24 inch barrel. His gun at 10 yards is doing what a 24 inch would do at 75-100 yards.

Thank you! Yeah it is insane to see the temporary wound channel bubble out. Thanks for stopping by and checking out my video
I'd like to see you test the Winchester PDX segmenting slug.
So am I....I have been friends with CRH for a few years now...and we both have wanted to do a video together for sometime now.

How do you know it went through the gel pointing forward and didn't just end up in that position?
Agreed...
ill look into it

Also, remember that rounds SLOW DOWN over distance, they dont speed up
I believe it is...but I think it really comes down to the rifled barrel. I will be retesting this soon.
1500pfs is VERY VERY FAST for a slug. Denim is used to test to see if a hollow point will get clogged and not expand, its not meant to help expand.
I use these slugs, and I managed to retrieve one of these slugs from a deer. And let me tell you, I couldn't be more impressed. They opened up as soon as it hit the deer. I don't think the hell is hard enough. Try molding a pig shoulder into the gell.

WELCOME TO GY6vids
I plan on testing all sorts of slugs...Stay tuned.
Thank you for the info....I'll look into it.
MP5 I love that you are showing us ballistics. Thanks again big guy
Thank you for watching and supporting GY6vids
Thank you Nick
Thank you....I agree
Smooth....Im planning on a retest to see if the expansion will happen with the rifled barrel.
Andrew the proof isn't in the pudding, but it is in the gel. LOL I love all your videos.
LOL Thank you for the support George
Your welcome.
Yeah thats what im thinking as well...a retest is in order I think.
Ill add them to the list of ammo to test....Thanks for the idea.
This is great in field INFO!!!! Thank you
My pleasure
Sounds good...its already on the list
Yes Flesh...not hide. Even though that would give it more resistance, it still is lacking expansion either way. A re test will happen down the road for sure
Thank you brotha....I agree 100%
Agreed....the results would be different if I had a rifled barrel though.
Rewatched this video w my brother. We think it key holed initially because of the short, unrifled barrel, and this is why it did not expand!
I have tested other hunting slugs very similar to this...and they have expanded.
I understand that, but at this range the slug is still flying straight and has yet to tumble. You can tell by the entrance wound that it didn't keyhole, and didn't even tumble as it went through the gel. So we should have seen a little expansion at 1500fps.

Smooth bore or rifled barrel ⁉️🤔
I found you through CRH too and I'm real happy I did! Definitely subscribed!
I am already planning it....stay tuned
that is what I think as well. Im going to retest with a longer hunting barrel and see what happens.
Whatever you do for future vids, I'll be looking forward to them, Gosh dangit! XD
Thanks for these awesome vids, man!
Good honest test results... thats why i like your vids... :) all the way from South Africa. Keep it up.

i always enjoy watching deer slugs, but DAMN, look at that cavity
thats some power
Great test! Awesome vid as usual brother.
Its on the list...thanks
No I didn't, I just dont use bone for straight up tests. Ballistics Gel tests are used mainly to see the effects of rounds when they impact. That way the tests are completely identical!
Ive seen them....Ill look into it. I have a lot on my TO DO LIST
Great video super powerful slugs very interesting to be shot out especially if it was a smoothbore and still hit that hard and not tumble very interesting 🤔🙂👍
I plan to later down the road. RE-Test is in order.
yeah the 300 blackout is a 7.62 bullet with a 5.56 casing. So big round, with low velocity.
Mosin is on the list...thanks
Thank you!
I first would need to get my hands on that weapon. The PDX1's are already on the list though
It still has awesome wound channel either way!
great minds think alike, I have been looking into it.
WOW the slow motion damage shows some insane flex from that gel. Great video, looking forward to more!
Well thank you...There will be a ton more tests coming your way. STAY TUNED and Spread the word, these tests aren't easy to do.
I plan on it!
That is in the top 5 things on the list of tests. Stay tuned.
