Ranger T is a precursor to the PDX-1 (for the guy that likes them). Great video. Lots of guys like the CD round, but I also prefer the PDX1. Mostly because I want the best penetration with the best expansion. The FBI testing plus videos including yours make it a no-brainer. Thanks man.
Those types of tests are on my list of things to do....and its a LONG LIST! Thank you for ideas brotha Also, yes the critical defense are a little more accurate due to the FTX tip, but that really doesn't matter with defense rounds, due to the fact these will only be used from 6-20 yards. The FTX tip is meant to prevent clogging.
Yeah they both are great rounds. I just was sponsored by a FBI Grade ballistics gel company, their gel is 100% accurate to human flesh. I tested the PDX1 through it, and it only went 11in. So there is no risk of over penetration with that round. Add in the Clothing, Bone, Muscle, and Water will cause it to slow even more.
I loved reading these....got to love a good argument....AND YOU GUYS DIDN'T CUSE EACH OTHER OUT!!! Nice work for the both of you on that fact. I will say though, the argument is won by Mrscarboss, because ALL of your original statements are based on certain situations. 1: You're in a open carry State(not concealed like most of us) 2: You're only dealing with CZ's 3: You're basing your decision, on "IF" someone had Kevlar(unlikely) 4: You Keep Changing your point. 5: No one cares past 50yds
Great video! I use the Hornady CD for home defense but have never had the pleasure of testing them on ballistics gel. It's nice to see how they react. Thanks.
Just wondering if Hornady considered the flextip as apart of the bullet's weight? I bet that little bugger weighs at least a grain... Also, Could you test the Hornady Critical Duty? I think that would be a closer match to the PDX1.
You put a lot of work into your test My big concern is that testing a 230gr PDX1 against a 185gr Critical defense is not a good comparison between bullet design. Good video please do it again with the same weight bullets.
The test wasn't to test equal rounds....it is to test the standard round from both companies. These are the standard gr weights from both companies....
Thank you Norman=) I appreciate your support, and Im glad you enjoyed the video. Much Much more to come, I just got sponsored by a Ballistics Gel Company that makes FBI Grade Ballistics Gel. Stay tuned brother.
1st off....thank you for the support. -The recoil of the critical defense was less, but not by much. -Yes the FTX tip was the remaining weight, but seeing how it didn't stay on the bullet, it cant be considered as "retained weight" -I have done BB penetration test in the past, and my gel is up to specs
That is the grain that the Hornady comes in. This video is comparing the two rounds, so I have to use what they sell. Either way though, they both are great.
Cool video. I always enjoy watching bids like this to see and possibly learn something or see if person is complete D.A. I actually have the Hornady loaded in my 44 Mag. I just recently purchased. I've yet to shoot it and after watching this video makes me want to shoot it even more. Wish I still lived out in country were it was ok to shoot but now unfortunately I'm city person now amd have to go pay at the range and that can make it get expensive. Well anyways nice video
That was a great job bro! I like both those rounds and I actually change up my ammo in my mags quite a bit, depending on what I'm carrying. Lol kinda like picking what shirt to wear. But it's between those you have and my Speer Gold Dots, golden saber, Critical duty. Great job bubba!!
well its not meant to be perfectly heads up in stats...its just a comparison between two rounds. The Critical Defense round doesn't come in any higher Grains from what I can see. So this was meant to just see a heads up test between the two rounds. Thanks though, glad you enjoyed the video
Thanks for the vid and for your work on the test. I was surprised to see Hornady stopping their critical defense in 45acp at the 185 gr. bullet. That is why chose the Critical Duty 45acp in 225 for my edc G30s. and my 1911's. Different rounds and different objectives. I wonder if hornady would have put a 225 or 230 gr bullet in the defense if it would penetrate similar to PDX1. (BTW I also have a few boxes of the PDX1 230 gr, and would not hesitate to carry it.
Take into consideration 1) some people are larger in size 2) if they're shooting at you , you might need to go through their arm or hands 3) also like I read in the comments, bones 4) and ballistic gel is a medium for testing not a realistic simulation of human meat ( or something like that) Not trying to be a smart ass or anything. I just think those things matter but I'm with you on not wanting over penetration. But also expansion matters for that big-time. And thick clothes like denim etc can clog a hollow point and make the bullet act like FMJ. Seen that in a Paul Harrell video .
Terrific review. I use both ammos for home and self defense. I rotate them. I like how they both shoot. I find the Hornady slightly more accurate but the PDX1 is excellent as well. To the guys who are fans of the 10mm. I don't use my 10mm for home defense for the simple reason is over-penetration. A 45 with its slower fps doesn't overpenetrate. The 10mm loaded like I prefer is a great woods gun for bear and boar. More power than a 357mag and just reaches into the lower energy 41 mag loads.
True...but consistant expansion helps a ton. Bone will mess it up quite a bit, but if its expanding perfect in gel 100% of the time, then it stands a better chance.
They are both great rounds. The Critical Defense is better at penetrating objets and material, because they have a lock band that prevents jacket separation.
Yeah I live about 2hours north of Sac. If you're having problems with the feeding of your HP's....you will love these Hornady rounds...the FTX(Flex Tip) tip's will aid in feeding the round into the gun.
Well Thank You TROLL! Your opinion mean SOOOO MUCH to me. LOL The Gel Block wan't compromised, it would be compromised if the wound channels CROSSED PATHS...but they dont and never do. If they do, I re-do the test. But im sure you have done SOOO MANY Ballistics Gel test before, so you would know what is right and what is wrong LOL
I appreciate your opinion and I do agree with it, but these aren't over penetrating. You have to consider the fact that a human body has Muscle, Bone, Organs and also a backside of clothing to pass through as well. So in the end all be all of things, it would slow the round down enough to take away the lethalness of the round.
Enjoyed your test, right now I carry the Hornady CD, in a Colt, 1911 New Agent so it was good to see how well it preformed, I believe both did very well, someone would have been just as dead with either, I know I wouldn't want to be shot by either, good video.
the 9mm has a much higher penetration rate. Im a 45acp fan, but I do prefer a little more penetration in my rounds I use...16-20in, because you never know when its going to hit a bone or thicker material that a THREAT could be wearing. That is my preference. Thanks for watching and I love the input
Its a heads up test to see how each round tests....I cant help that the Critical defense is always less mass. TRUST ME, I know a LOT about ballistics. I also understand all of what you just said......BUT ONCE AGAIN....I wasn't trying to test two IDENTICAL STYLE OF PERSONAL DEFENSE ROUNDS, I was testing to see how both preformed. That way people can choose for them self what they want to use.
Thank you for making these videos, they are very informative. I keep both PDX1 and Hornady XTP 230gr +P as my home defense loads. When I only have 7 rounds on hand, I do my research. Both rounds shoot extremely well, both rounds are more than capable defensive loads. I will say that whatever round people consider for carry/HD, buy extra and shoot some at the range to make sure its a good fit for you and your weapon.
You want the higher grain weight for .45. The lower penetration on a .45 the better. If a bullet leaves the body, its wasted energy. That's the reason people prefer 147gr 9mm. Great video!
Well thank you RHOR....I appreciate you info=) A lot of the rounds you just said you use...are on my list of ammo to test=) Critical Duty and Speer Gold Dots are next=)
That Winchester is absolutely devastating! Black Talon technology is decades old yet in all reality, it’s still benchmark performance. A 3/4” X 20” hole is simply devastating!!!!!
I wish I could reply to Equinox directly. He's right in the fact the HCD does its damage early. However at a longer distance the PDX1 would be carrying more energy and could penetrate a higher amount of material. People aren't made up of denim and ballistic gel. We have bones, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. We also wear more then just denim. Zippers, billfolds, money clips, jewelry, metal piercings, even titanium screws and metal plates to mend past broken bones (and so on and so on). I would trust the heavier, better expanding, and better penetrating projectile when it comes to life or death. Because the real world happens every day... much more often then testing. This just gives us a base with a controlled setting for comparison.
Holy Mother of God... Ive been binge watching your recent videos, and stumbled across this one by accident... The gym and haircut did you good brotha! ahaha
Good review. The only criticism I have is shooting into the same block. The PDX1 channel was close to the critical defense. If the test media was already disrupted then the PDX may have had an easier path which may account for the difference in penetration.
Its the standard weight of each round...this is mean to test the difference in what each round does. Seeing how standard Critical defense are 185, I stuck with that....and standard PDX1's are 230gr, so I stuck with that.
Your CZ can shoot 10mm because it was designed to be able to take a round up to that cartridge. If it was designed to take just .45 and then go to 10mm later, changes would have to be made as is required with any gun not designed for the 10mm.
No... Hydro-static shock from a very fast traveling bullet will probably cause more stopping power sometimes, but most of the time, the bigger the bullet the more stopping power is involved.
Excellent comparison. I have both of these rounds for a Bond Arms Derringer and a Taurus Judge Public Defender, along with 410 000 Buckshot. I would have guessed a deeper wound channel and penetration for the PDX1 round, but in some cases, that round may travel completely through a body, risking injuring to others. In public, I load with the Critical Defense for decent, but less penetration. Just my opinion...
I would love to see this exact test in 40sw. Pdx1 vs critical defense 165g vs critical duty 175g. I have a few boxes off all 3 brands and would definitely like to see your results in comparing these rounds for self defense. Thanks drew. Keep up the good work. Merica!!!!!
The PDX1 is damn near the same round as the Talons
Hornady Critical Defense is one hell of a good round in all calibers
The missing grain from the Hornady bullet is probably the red plastic tip.
@@mikeplantamura 180 maybe..
Im glad you like it. Yeah PDX1's are amazing!
Its a great round...I was totally impressed with both of these rounds. Cant go wrong with either
I've carried Critical Defense for years. It's fantastic. Never had a malfunction with it.
Thank you! Yeah they are both two of my favorites so far....more tests to come
Hornady are amazing as well...but I like the expansion and peddles more on the PDX1
Ranger T is a precursor to the PDX-1 (for the guy that likes them).

Well thank you. Im glad you enjoy them, and get something out of them.
Very well said as well!
Great video man all i carry is the PDX-1's thank you for taking the time to solidify the reliability of those rounds.
Thank you Pin....its great to have support from so far away...please help spread the word in your area...it helps my channel a ton.
Regardless of which round you use....you do not want to be on the receiving end of either round......its gonna hurt like all hell.
As always, great video, man. Keep up the good work!
A fun little experiment, but it's not really comparable considering they vary in size by 45 grains.
Those types of tests are on my list of things to do....and its a LONG LIST!
Thank you for ideas brotha
Also, yes the critical defense are a little more accurate due to the FTX tip, but that really doesn't matter with defense rounds, due to the fact these will only be used from 6-20 yards.

Nice work for the both of you on that fact.
I will say though, the argument is won by Mrscarboss, because ALL of your original statements are based on certain situations.
1: You're in a open carry State(not concealed like most of us)
2: You're only dealing with CZ's
3: You're basing your decision, on "IF" someone had Kevlar(unlikely)
4: You Keep Changing your point.
5: No one cares past 50yds
Yeah the PDX1's are amazing!
Thank you...glad to have you on board
The correct way of comparison should be critical "duty" vs pdx1.
A5Maverick At the time of this video they didn't have the Critical Duty out yet....this was over three years ago.
Why?
Great video! I use the Hornady CD for home defense but have never had the pleasure of testing them on ballistics gel. It's nice to see how they react. Thanks.

oh and a mature, adult, non threatening DISCUSSION, is what teaches and also provides those reading, a way to LEARN(If the info is valid)
Thank you....yeah the critical duty are great....they are coming up on one of my new ballistics video tests. STAY TUNED
Thanks lskw1=) Always good to hear your opinion!
Thank you Norman=) I appreciate your support, and Im glad you enjoyed the video. Much Much more to come, I just got sponsored by a Ballistics Gel Company that makes FBI Grade Ballistics Gel. Stay tuned brother.

You're welcome. Glad you liked it
Thank you...that is a valid specific comment!
"It is good for me", doesn't always mean it is THE BEST CHOICE.

I love both rounds! Great presentation!
Interesting, I didn't think the PDX1 was that good. They both did very well. You can't go wrong with either.
Thank you....Im glad this video helped. Much more to come
Thank you....glad to see you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the vid and for your work on the test. I was surprised to see Hornady stopping their critical defense in 45acp at the 185 gr. bullet. Just got sponsored by a FBI Grade quality Ballistics Gel company called Clear Ballistics. So next ballistics gel vids are going to be great!
I dunno...20.25 penetration for the PDX1 is too far (via FBI standard), so over penetration.
thats not a problem if it hits a bone... which is highly likely
3yrs later. FBI selects PDX1 rounds lol,
Two holes better than 1
Take into consideration 1) some people are larger in size

Nice to know I have PDX1 .40's at home, nice to see how they perform!!!
I live two hours north of sac.
Glad to have you as a sub.
When I see a HK USP 45, I automatically hit the like button. One of the best 45 acp hand guns out there. Change my mind.
Yeah I live about 2hours north of Sac.
If you're having problems with the feeding of your HP's....you will love these Hornady rounds...the FTX(Flex Tip) tip's will aid in feeding the round into the gun.

Speer Gold Dots are fantastic...I plan on doing a test with them here shortly.

Yeah I do!!! They have a ton of punch...and are reliable as hell!
@GY6, Great bro I've been wanting to do some tests of my own but it's hard to find time with my busy schedule at work! Can't wait to see them.
Enjoyed your test, right now I carry the Hornady CD, in a Colt, 1911 New Agent so it was good to see how well it preformed, I believe both did very well, someone would have been just as dead with either, I know I wouldn't want to be shot by either, good video.
Those are great rounds...i will have to do them in the future.
I love seeing the unlikely happen in these videos!

Yeah the Ranger T's are great....Thanks for the info and support!

Yeah those BONDED rounds are great for retaining their weight. Every time I do a test with the PDX1...I like it more and more.
Thanks=) Im glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you...yeah Im a big fan of both.
Well thank you RHOR....I appreciate you info=) A lot of the rounds you just said you use...are on my list of ammo to test=)

That Winchester is absolutely devastating! Black Talon technology is decades old yet in all reality, it’s still benchmark performance. A 3/4” X 20” hole is simply devastating!!!!!
Well im glad it gave you a new perspective
Chemically Bonded Jacket....and also, most HP's dont get clogged, but the tip helps in the small chance that it could.
Both are effective and you can’t go wrong with either. I personally carry the PDX1 in my Colt Defender.
I wish I could reply to Equinox directly. He's right in the fact the HCD does its damage early. Thanks.....Im glad you liked it...and hope to have you on board as a SUB soon.
I might....not sure yet...I have a bunch of other rounds im going to be testing first...Federal HST is probably next
Thank you. You’ve saved me time AND money.
Oh I plan on it...that will be a Great Test!
great video review, those are both some wicked rounds, nice job!
Thank you. Welcome to GY6vids
Much Much more to come
True...thanks for the info.
I would love to see this exact test in 40sw. Pdx1 vs critical defense 165g vs critical duty 175g. I have a few boxes off all 3 brands and would definitely like to see your results in comparing these rounds for self defense. Thanks drew. Keep up the good work. Merica!!!!!
stay tuned!
