    The Columbus Blue Jackets are probably the franchise that a lot of people forget exists, in most cases. The sad part is that the Jackets haven't done much to break that narrative. This franchise just can't do anything right; or should I say, everything falls apart on them.
    This year, like many before them, is no exception. This video is in dedication to the franchise doomed to be the enhancement talent of the NHL.

    Columbus fan here who appreciates your work. Some thoughts:
    -They could have offered Panarin his own private jet and a house in Connecticut he could commute to and from and he still wasn't signing with them/us.
    -They never offered Duchene a contract.
    -The Seth Jones trade was highway robbery, and I'm still laughing.
    -I think it was last year that Jenner would have had 30 goals if his back didn't explode.
    -The buzz phrase was The Lars Bar in hiring Torts' replacement. It should've been the GD Torts Bar.
    -Rookie coaches in Columbus tend to do this weird thing where the first season isn't too bad, albeit a roller coaster, and then season 2 is a dumpster fire. Vincent has skipped straight to year 2.
    -Gaudreau has been back to a PPG pace over the last 10-15 games. Hoping to Christ it stays that way.
    -I would have driven to DC and personally packed his house if it meant Peter Laviolette came here.

      @N_manMETA11 3 месяца назад

      @@FirearmofMutiny YES.
      That was always such a silly excuse to me that he only signed there 'because the Rangers are a wagon', at the time he signed there, the Rangers were operating with every expectation of tanking in 2019-20.
      The core they were competing with was mostly picked apart by that point (Stepan regressed beyond repair and was traded), guys like Zuccarello, Nash, Hagelin and Moore were long gone, Staal was regressing, McDonagh and Shattenkirk were gone too and they had pretty much nothing coming up the pipeline to their knowledge.
      Panarin wasn't a contending move, it was desperation. Panarin signed at a time where NOBODY knew what Mika Zibanejad and Igor Shesterkin would become, and more than that, guys like Chytl hadn't broken out yet either.
      At that time, the Rangers were operating under the assumption that a 36 year old Lundqvist might play until he was 39 or 40, and that Georgiev was taking the reins afterward (not Shesterkin). The only reason it didn't work out that way is because the Rags caught fire in like December-ish that year and rode that wave for 2 months.
      Lost early in the play-ins, lucked into the draft lottery and got a player who they seriously thought might be a franchise talent, and they spent like it in free agency. Also remember, at the time, people thought Adam Fox was *maybe* a Top 4 Dman, very few people had him pegged as one of the next greats at the position.
      The Panarin signing changed what otherwise could've been a terrible half decade for the Rangers, but anybody who thinks the inspiration behind him going there was simply to 'contend' is wrong to me, a guy who's intention is chasing rings would've taken $5-7 mil to play in a Tampa or Vegas at that time, not go for the high dollar New York deal.
      And it was never gonna happen in Columbus because the Blue Jackets were slammed up against the cap ceiling at the time, and there was no way they were signing more than one or two of those guys. Bobrovsky and Panarin got paid more than the Jacket could've afforded and that's BEFORE the payday that Duchene got. It was so bad Nashville had to buy it out half way through and let Ryan Johansen go in the same breath.
      The Blue Jackets just got stuck in a situation where they caught fire right as a bunch of their contracts were expiring; they essentially paid the Cup tax, except for the part where they win a cup.

    As a longtime Red Wings fan who works in Columbus, it's a damn shame this franchise only has ONE Playoff Series win in their entire existence
    Yes, their EPIC UPSET of Tampa Bay gave us the meme of memes before COVID, but it's stunning to see a franchise based in the Midwest has struggled to even gain a footing in the NHL. Even more shocking, the Vegas Golden Knights, a team based in the fucking Movaje Desert already have a Stanley Cup in under 10 years of existence
    Columbus is a great sports town and the Jackets do have a very strong following locally throughout Central Ohio. But it's hard playing second fiddle to the OSU Buckeyes, especially when they dominate the news cycles and completely blank the Jackets off the sports page unless the Buckeyes are a total dumpster fire. Nationwide Arena is a extremely nice venue and it's got one of the best features in the Cannon. You'd expect a situation like this to be bestowed onto the Arizona Coyotes and not the Jackets
    This franchise is hitting rock bottom AGAIN and after the Mike Babcock debacle, who knows how long it'll be before this franchise is relevant again or wins another playoff series. The Jackets struggle with being an expansion team with a mostly clueless and checked out ownership group who treats the team like a business first and foremost.
    It's certainly not ideal we're sandwiched between 3 legendary hockey towns in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Detroit. There has been a tendency to accept mediocrity. The original owner who truly advocated for hockey in Central Ohio, John H McConnell, died in 2008. His son certainly doesn't have the same fire for the team as he did
    The city deserves a good team. Columbus is growing and we have been packing the barn this year even with our on ice performance. I believe we are closer than we look on the surface, but the next head coach really needs to be the right one.

Speaking of the Crew, if you want to do more Columbus related videos, "Anthony Precourt: MLS's Dean Spanos" would be also an interesting video concept.

    Could have added 2017 to list of times Columbus was good but with a catch. That might have been the one time in their existence they had a legitimately good team. They finished 4th in the league that year (108 points) and had a 16 game-winning streak. Unfortunately, the 2nd and 1st placed teams (Pittsburgh and Washington) were also in their division, and due to the playoff format, they had to play Pittsburgh in the first round. The best season in franchise history amounted to one playoff win. Goes to show just how cursed the team is.

      Olivier absolutely unloading on Rempe was truly highlight-worthy. The game against the Rangers is proof that the Blue Jackets can actually play good hockey, if you can somehow motivate them to play good hockey for a whole three periods.

  • @StarkRaven59
    @StarkRaven59 3 месяца назад +4

    I feel the deepest problem with Columbus is that they have no consistency. The most recent game against the Rangers showed that they have a potent offense, good speed, and that Merzlikins still has the ability to stop shots. And, I guess, that Mathieu Olivier can unload on a rookie who thinks he's hot shit. It's just that you almost never get that over a full 3 periods of hockey, much less a series of games. The Blue Jackets will fly high for a period, maybe two, then suddenly their skates become dull, they can't pass, nobody can get on the same page, and the collapse becomes legend.
    In the off chance that Columbus actually plays up to their ability, they can in fact win games against good opponents, score good goals; but trying to extract that ability from them on a regular basis, even within the span of one singular game, is like trying to pull teeth while herding cats.

    • @maekoh
      @maekoh 3 месяца назад

      Same here, and you're spot on. Individually Gaudreau is a 1 way player and has been that way all his time in Calgary, but his linemates in Tkachuk & Lindholm completely remedied that. The Cavaliers did bring a championship to Ohio, but do not forget that their biggest star (Lebron James, who grew up in Akron) spurned them for the Heat before deciding to come home, and then left them again after fulfilling his promise. The Bengals have a solid core right now, but this team is the definition of "close, but never close enough" in its entire existence. As for the Browns, almost two decades of gross incompetence means everyone and their grandma still make "LOL Browns" jokes till today. I guess that is probably the only saving grace of being a Jackets fan: there are bigger shining stars and laughing stocks around you to be left alone.

If anything I've always rooted for them to find their footing and get somewhere one day because I just feel bad for them. I can't even call it a rivalry because they've always just existed below us. I even made the drive to Columbus one year for a Wings game there, and the Jackets fans sitting around me were pretty chill. Detroit won 5-1 and the people nearby commented "You must be having a real good time then" and by the end, it mostly was just a sea of red in the crowd. Jarmo‘s addition to “grit”, desperately holding on to a coach that would bench players for not blocking a slapshot with their dick in practice that 30% of the league doesn’t want to play for (Athletic player survey ‘19), letting any player who’s contract was expiring walk after winning a playoff series for the first time in over 20 years, while being fine with paying Nick Foligno and Brandon Dubinski and giving them top 6 minutes. I gave up on the team in the 20 off-season but couldn’t help but feel bad for my friends who still follow that trash hole when they promoted the worst assistant coach in the NHL, Brad Larsen, to the head job when Jarmo FINALLY was told to get rid of Torts.

    You forgot to mention Columbus is the home to the *Defending MLS Cup Champions* Columbus Crew, one of the league's original teams, it's not just the Buckeyes tree

    I don't think it was ever a Columbus problem for most guys, it was more of a Blue Jackets issue. Panarin was leaving anyone for the Rangers. Bob / Seth / PLD left for reasons that had nothing to do with the city itself. Not to mention Jarmo's "I have the hammer" negotiating tactics leaving some guys with bad tastes in their mouths. This doesn't even begin to cover everything, but it stunk seeing the city take shit for poor management creating a situation undesirable for most free agents

      Yeah, Jarmo is far more responsible for players wanting out, from what people are saying

      Rick Nash wanted out too, but he always lived in Columbus in the offseason

      Exactly. It’s not the city. It’s clear team culture and management are the underlying issues.

    I knew as a CBJ fan a video was coming on them sooner or later. I’m surprised this wasn’t sooner. I love hockey, but I’ve lost patience with this team to the point that I can’t bring myself to spend money to go see them play, and I live 20 minutes from NWA.

    Same coaching record with the Blue Jackets

    The Columbus Blue Jackets in their existence since 2000 has been the equivalent of the Cleveland Browns since 1999.

      I don't know what's worse for these Ohio-based teams:
      The Cleveland Browns being labelled "The Factory Of Sadness."
      The Columbus Blue Jackets being called "The League's Enhancement of Talent."
      Both of these franchises and their fans have suffered endless heartbreak.

    I live in Cleveland and got season tickets because they were relatively cheap. Nationwide has a great atmosphere and the team has a decent fan base that does show up. It sucks that I have to drive 2 hours to watch a 40 point team play like short bus District 5 sometimes, but it’s better than no NHL hockey where I live
