This is the truest thing. From smash bros melee competitions to nascar and now football (among other odd topics) I seldom become as captivated as when emplemon is guiding me through the topic at hand.
This story is not about sports, that is why it sucked you in. It is about mathematics, probability, phycology and a little bit of superstition thrown in. The human condition is what was on display, the sport is just the vehicle he used.
@@thejunkmanA lot of people enjoy sports because of the narratives you can find within them. It's easy to reduce sports to "man chase ball", which I'm guilty of doing sometimes, but like most things there is more to it than what you see at the surface level. Not that it's super big brained or anything - my brother calls sports soap operas for men haha
My uncle, Bob Kuechenberg, was an offensive lineman on that undefeated 1972 Dolphins roster. Very cool to see you mention him in this video! His brother Rudy was also a linebacker for the Chicago Bears. Great video Emp, also enjoyed the Jet Neptune interview
Kuechenberg was a good lineman; he saw four of Miami’s five Super Bowl teams to date I believe (wasn’t he there for Dan Marino’s first season but not his second). Along with Jim Langer and Larry Little who made the Hall of Fame, he was a key blocker that helped their backfield thrive, and also would have blocked for the rushers of the 1982 team that had the Killer B’s, and made the Super Bowl with David Woodley at quarterback.

The influence of the Dolphins culturally is huge. As someone who lives in Australia, I have no idea about NFL except for the Patriots, and the Miami Dolphins. Sporting bodies sometimes go beyond their usual fans and into wider recognition
Australian here, don't know much about NFL, but this was truly captivating. I hope I find a channel like yours one day to cover our national sports one day.
I would highly recommend watching a documentary on the '07 Giants season then. Emplemon could've milked that for way more, our Giants team had everything; a hard nose coach, long term vet on the brink of retirement, a terrible start, and once the players started believing in each other, our defense played lights out. Every game was a battle that led to history
It's worth mentioning that the 2007 season was the season of the Spygate scandal when the Patriots were recording the other coaches' signals outside of the appropriate contexts for doing so, and it was deemed such a violation by the league that Belichick was given the max fine allowed ($500K) and the Patriots were stripped of their 1st round pick in the 2008 draft. That was a big part of why many outside of New England didn't want to see the Patriots go all the way at the time. It wasn't just about preserving the novelty of the 72' Dolphins, it was about preserving the purity of the perfect season.
The “outside of the appropriate context” is a MASSIVE detail people gloss over when talking ab spygate tho. Pats never filmed anything they weren’t allowed to and gained no real competitive advantage
@@vyor8837 not really, unless you think filming the exact same thing from a different location means you’re filming something completely different but atp you’re just being absurd lmao
As a Giants fan, it was a joy to see how our win has become historic from trying to prevent history. Beating the 18-0 Patriots turned me into a fan forever
The saddest part of being a life long dolphins fan in the 21st century is that the giants winning that game was the most excited ive been watching a football game and it wasnt even my team 😂
As a Giants fan, that Superbowl was the wildest, most winding rollercoaster of emotion and the greatest case of schadenfreude I would ever experience in my life. Nothing better than shattering your rival's god complex

Emp, not gonna lie, I suggest doing more sports themed content like this. This is gold. The same way Art of the Choke was gold. Keep this up. Please. Also I enjoy the UrinatingTree cameo appearance at 8:23 btw lol
I grew up in Indianapolis, watching football from birth. By the end of the '71 season I had just turned 10 and had become pretty familiar with all the teams, but I hadn't chosen a favorite to be "mine". Geographically, the Bengals or the Bears made sense, but I decided to ignore proximity. I chose the Dolphins during that off-season, mostly for a reason that seems silly in hindsight: I liked their uniform colors. But my selection and timing was just right. For years after that, my bedroom wall was adorned with a large poster of Larry Csonka busting through a bunch of Redskin defenders. And although I have adopted various teams over the decades as I've moved around, I still have a special place in my heart for the "One-Two Punch" of Griese-Csonka, receiver Paul Warfield, and all the rest. Every year, if any team starts to string together a number of wins, I start to get protective and find myself rooting against them until they fall.
I'm 67; I was raised on football, and until 2008, my favorite game, was the Jets > Colts in SBIII. But then, with all the 'perfect' talk about the Pats, they even started publishing a book about their perfect season, the Giants got their revenge for that regular season loss, and that became my favorite superbowl game, ever. I don't think I'll live long enough to see another perfect season; those Dolphins were great, but also had just enough luck to get them that famous moniker: PERFECT.
My great uncle played on the 72 Dolphins. When we lost him a few years back, I imagined him being met by Mr. Morrall, and Mr. Yepremian with a glass of champagne. So, when you said that last line, and I heard the opening drum roll of a song that had been played for me since I was in the cradle, I choked up a little. Thank you for helping keep their memory alive.
If you want me to give up my anonymity on site with hundreds of millions of users, all for the belief of a complete stranger, you’ve lost your mind. I shared an anecdote about an emotional response to the video. I owe you nothing more.
The experience of "chasing perfection", in my experience, isn't all too analogous to chasing something; it's closer to having one side of yourself being pulled towards it while the other recognizes its impossibility, and thus is repelled by it - until, eventually, you rip yourself apart in its pursuit.
As a dolphins fan, I remember being at a superbowl party with a bunch of Patriots and Giants fans in college. I was hugging and high fiving all the Giants fans at the end. I will never forget what they did for our legacy.
I'm from Miami, and I remember my middle school teacher being obsessed with the Dolphins, older fellow, in his 60's now, retired 5 years back. He'd sit us down with a far off look of awe in his eyes and talk to us about how he sneaked into the Orange Bowl to watch the '72 Dolphins play, that little Miami Dolphins chant being sung while he was bored all the time. I was an egghead and didn't care much about sports, in a way it was even a little annoying, but for the first time in my life, I finally now understand why. For once I can fully comprehend the gravity of what he witnessed, and why to this day his faith in his team remains unwavering. He's now got another fan too, thanks for everything, Emp.
Sports are so fun to watch because of the anxiety that comes with it. Football, soccer, baseball, etc all have their share of anxiety ridden seasons. The 72 Dolphins where in a league in their own
@@RAAM855 Those teams certainly are impressive, but they are college teams. Their competition is pretty good, but not the best of the best, as it is in professional sports.
@@aleksandersaame9417 Yeah when your average team is as good as they are at the professional level, things like "perfect games" really do become literal statistical flukes.
I have always fuckin loved the idea of ghosts of players past coming into the game to defend or even aid in defeating their records. Always has a good vibe to me.
God hearing Miami Dolphins #1 got me so nostalgic. I ain't a huge sports person, was only born in 2k, but hearing that song brings back fuzzy memories of going to The Big Cheese with my family and soaking in the atmosphere.
A lifelong Dolphins fan, my childhood started with the perfect season in my 7th year. You have so perfectly encapsulated my football watching life as I certainly did not realize how special my first year of watching and paying attention to football was when it happened. I thought the Lombardi was my teams birthright as they won it twice when I was very young and now sadly they have never gotten it again. Since those two seasons, the happiest I have been while watching football was the 85 Dolphins takedown of the Bears and the 07 Giants takedown of the evil empire! The futility of the Dolphins throughout the first 20 years of this century nearly destroyed my love for this game. Now, 51 years later I am excited watching my own team again and TRULY appreciated the 70 points put up against the Broncos. I await this season's ending with excitement and true hope for this year and the future as McDaniel looks to be the true heir of Don Shula's legacy. Just bringing winning back to Miami is warming my frozen football heart. God Bless Emp for making this wonderful video!
While I'm glad Emp acknowledged the incredible feat of Man City reaching 100 points in a single Prem season, it's a shame he didn't mention Arsenal's "Invincible" season of 2003-4, when they became the only Premier League team to date to not lose a single game all season - 26 wins and 12 draws.
He did say that undefeated =/= perfect. This was about perfectville. Perfect means a lot more than undefeated. It was about winning, not avoiding to lose.
@@theEWDSDS sigh… I’m a Steelers fan. List of teams j want to win the superbowl most each year in order and why. 1. Bills As a child I witnessed the greatest and most dominant football team in the 90’s lose 4 superbowls in a row. They won me so much money in Tecmo Bowl tournaments my dad and uncle had… and they just… lost and lost and lost and lost in the superbowl. It was depressing… 2. Bengals So I can make a T shirt and hat that’s got a list of every AFC north team that’s not only been to a Super Bowl but won one. If the bengals win this year that list would be Ravens with 2-0, Bengals 1-2, Steelers 6-2, and the Browns at 0-0. I would proudly wear that shit in Cleveland and go to every browns home game wearing that shit :). 3. Steelers I’m a Steelers fan. Of course I want them to win. 4. Lions… sorta.. If they go that’s good enough. If they win cool too. It would make the browns the “oldest” team to never be there. Hoping the Jags make it too so the browns are literally the oldest team to never go instead of the fake oldest team (browns are a 1999 expansion team… jags came before. If Lions make it the Browns pretending the Ravens record is theirs is the oldest. But it if we step out of imagination land and the jags and lions make it the browns are the actual oldest tk never make it.) I hate the browns.

You’ve mastered the art of building tension and suspense and the all too elusive release. Not only that, but I have been trying to get more into sports in general over the past few years, and your videos on football, baseball and nascar have shown me why it is that people care so much about all this. Like modern day myths, or as close to superheroes you can get. These teams and players have legends built around them. And the passion people have for their cities and their teams, is fully displayed in the content you create. I finally understand, and I am partially in debt to you for that. Good game, cheers!

Thank you Emp. As a Giants fan coming across one of the worst games in the history of our franchise, I needed this. There isn't much pride in being a Giants fan this year, but this makes me realize our legacy of beating the titans of the sport may be even deeper than we realized. We may not have the honor of the perfect team like the Dolphins do, but we have another honor. The perfection slayers. If you get too close to perfection, the Giants will be the team to bring you down to earth. You highlighted several of these moments, including the greatest game in our team history, and I thank you for doing this at a time when we have little to cheer for in the present. So enjoy your one-of-a-kind honor Miami. If you managed to beat us that year, then you truly are the chosen ones, and I guess we are the ones chosen to slay any threats. Dude had a ballistic missile for a right arm. Also at, 28:44 the official "playin' the saints" theme.

I knew the joy I had as a Pats fan after the art of the choke video would ultimately be followed up by the closest pursuit of perfection spoiled video, but in the end I love this comprehensive storytelling
This was a nice trip down memory lane combined with a really good story about the league in general. I grew up in south Florida in the 80's and 90's and went to so many of the Dolphins games.. My dad produced the television broadcasts for the home games in the early to mid 80's so we were always around the stadium and I still have a few pictures of me with Don Shula and my dad down on the field. I was also in the boy scouts with the son of '72 Dolphins LDT Manny Fernandez. Even in the 90's he was still a big and intimidating guy but had a heart of gold and loved making us all laugh. I have so many good memories from my childhood tied to this team and this video really brought a smile to my face. It might've invoked a few tears in the process.

I love the comment at the end about bad things happening when you try to pass 72, almost like the number itself has some supernatural weight behind it. Really great stuff.
One other Browns team that deserves a mention in the other direction: If we count the AAFC part of their history, the 1948 Browns went 14-0 followed by a championship win, so that’s undefeated as well. But Miami is the only undefeated NFL team that had to win multiple playoff games.
If there were a more appropriate time for it to happen, it will be during the Super Bowl, with the ghosts stepping in to deny the Chiefs their sought-after three-peat. It would be pretty poetic if the team to snap KC's streak was the Lions.

This is the truest thing. From smash bros melee competitions to nascar and now football (among other odd topics) I seldom become as captivated as when emplemon is guiding me through the topic at hand.

Which is a lie. Every team was doing the exact same thing back then. Patriots were just the first to get punished for it
The “outside of the appropriate context” is a MASSIVE detail people gloss over when talking ab spygate tho. Pats never filmed anything they weren’t allowed to and gained no real competitive advantage

I don't think I'll live long enough to see another perfect season; those Dolphins were great, but also had just enough luck to get them that famous moniker: PERFECT.

Your story telling ability is practically unmatched. I do not watch sports like almost ever, but this is so fascinating it makes me want to hang around a league, s championship or a team like that in case I witness history.
51:55 "By now everyone knows that bad things happen when you try and pass 72" has absolutely no right to go that hard
Can’t say I’m happier when I see any other person uploaded than EmpLemon. Genuinely, you’re the best channel I’m aware of and your videos push the boundaries of what people view as “Standard RUclips Content.” Keep up the good work, Emp.
Josh Allen and the Bills in Week 11 of the 2024 season just ended the Chiefs run at perfection
Bust out the champagne boys🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾
I love the comment at the end about bad things happening when you try to pass 72, almost like the number itself has some supernatural weight behind it. Really great stuff.
The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors (73-9) were the only team to choke away a 3-1 series lead…in the NBA Finals. 🤔
I always get chills from Vin Scully's call: “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!”
I'm surprised there was no mention of the 2017 Browns who put together a perfect 0-16 season. They even got a parade for it!
Browns and lions 😂
And a dip in Lake Erie
One other Browns team that deserves a mention in the other direction:
If we count the AAFC part of their history, the 1948 Browns went 14-0 followed by a championship win, so that’s undefeated as well.
But Miami is the only undefeated NFL team that had to win multiple playoff games.
Now I’m left wondering if the ghosts will step in to humble Kansas City a little
If there were a more appropriate time for it to happen, it will be during the Super Bowl, with the ghosts stepping in to deny the Chiefs their sought-after three-peat. It would be pretty poetic if the team to snap KC's streak was the Lions.
@@pithhelmet3717 I mean it already happened before, Giants V Patriots.
