1:17 will ALWAYS be a sore spot for Nashville, we almost had it and then ref puck in Game 2 took it away from us. Then things started to fall apart for several seasons after that with us not making the playoffs this season.
What scares me the most is this: What if this was the final elite year you got our of your top 3 players? What if this was the final amazing season you got of of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang? The Pens management and coaching wasted all of that this season, and while FSG did the right thing and purged the front office, I am beyond scared for the future of this team. This was really needed. Thanks UTree. In the meantime, I need 2009, 2016, and 2017 as my drugs of choice during this awful time.
If it is, they should've thought of that last offseason. Maybe Zucker signs at 1/3 of his current price and Granlund becomes a 60 point player again. Although in a Mike Sullivan system... not likely.
Now we need a video like this for the Capitals. Even though they saw a shorter playoff streak come to an end, they are in a similar boat with the Penguins. At least they accepted their fate sooner and started selling at the trade deadline. Hathaway and Orlov were sent to Boston. It'll be interesting to see what type of approach the two clubs take this off-season but I doubt either club can do much.
The Flyers, Penguins, and Capitals. Three former Patrick Division rivals facing uncertain futures. Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Ovechkin won't be around forever, and once they're gone, HELL AWAITS!!!!!!!
At least the Capitals won a Cup while they could. And the Penguins were dominant for a good decade or so. Now the Flyers though? They’re kinda fucked. At least Hextall is gone.
This is honestly sad to me. I HATED the Pens when Crosby was first drafted. My fellow Buffalo fans called him the biggest purse swinger in the NHL. This…this feels wrong. Seeing them miss the playoffs entirely. I feel the same about Buffalo making it to the final week before being eliminated.
Fun fact: Jim Rutherford wanted to do a rebuild (yeah, I know) after the 2017 cup run, but Lemieux refused. That’s when he tried to make these crazy moves with his picks.
Steelers: The cancer has been long since cleared away but are stuck in Hell unless Kenny Pickett takes a major leap in his second year. Penguins: An effort to keep the good times rolling with the core results in a mess. They have to house clean and rebuild, and they cannot. Pirates: Going retro with Andrew McCutchen makes them surprisingly good. Pittsburgh Sports: Embrace the Chaos.

At least I'm an out of market fan so I can attempt to ignore the next few years. Also I love the Sonic music you add to these vids! The boss music from Sonic Spinball is criminally underrated!
That's the problem, he never would've BEEN more than a depth piece in Pittsburgh. Sullivan's too enamored with Rust and Zucker to even consider McCann in a top 6 role.
@@N_manMETA11It was the same problem with Bryce Hopkins this past college basketball season. He was barely used at Kentucky at all and then when he transferred to Providence, he was amazing. He went from averaging not even 3 PPG into averaging nearly 16-8-2 for the season. He was the main reason Providence was even near the NCAA Tournament to begin with. It’s an out there comparison but it kind of works because John Calipari also has a consistent problem of being too stubborn and loyal for his favorites rather than use the best players and rotations possible.
Absolutely loved this video, Tree. I really enjoy your NHL content and I appreciate you taking the time to talk about a less popular league. Hopefully the Pens management realizes they’ve got a lot of work to do to be competitive in the East. It’s a fucking bloodbath over there.
It’s halfway through December 2023, the Pens are still trash, and Sully is still the coach. They also haven’t scored a PP goal in over thirty power plays.
I don't think you mentioned how awful the Pens special teams were all season long. Case in point, the fact that the Pens gave up crucial shorthanded goals like they were Halloween candy all season long.
As a fan of the Wild, thanks for letting us get Bill Guerin. He turned our team from something that should've died of no-cap-space-itis into a formidable foe who made the playoffs.
All this being said though, we did only miss the playoffs by one point. With a good new front office, get someone to replace Letang, and tighten up the goalie situation, I think we could easily get some depth in another playoff run. Crosby and Malkin are still doing well.
Thank you Pens for Bill Guerin His skill he honed under the Pens dynasty has helped him become one of the best GMs in hockey, reviving a dead Wild team to on the verge of breaking through Only makes me wonder what if Jim Rutherford went out on top allowing Guerin to take control of the Pens
Its like Yzerman all over again with how Guerrin has impressively worked around the Parise and Suter contracts from Fletcher to still keep building a good team. The Pens are gonna be regretting that decision for years to come.....
Lmfao are you serious? He is holding them back if anything. He should have gotten rid of dumba and merrill and kept fiala. He should have never gotten fleury or made sure fleury starts in the playoffs. Evason last season said that they would play the hot hand going into the playoffs. Talbot his last 5 starts had an over .915 save percentage, fleury in his last 5 starts had a save percentage of about .884% if not less. Please, I have a hard time remembering, who started in the playoffs last season? Who was the one who made sure fleury still was the main guy all season despite having the 2nd best goalie statistically in the league? Oh yes. Guerin. And I won't be surprised if fleury starts one of the next couple of games despite gustavsson dominanting these playoffs. Only one goalie that started game 1 for all 16 playoff teams didn't start game 2. That was gustavsson. Don't use the whole "he was tired and needed a rest" excuse, oettinger played the next game and still played good. Guerin didn't bother asking parise and suter to waive their no movement clauses. We lost several guys just to keep dumba around. Dumba had his worst pro season in his career. Took a crap ton of penalties, didn't produce offensively, and surpressed his value so low that we didn't get any calls about him at the deadline. I won't be surprised either if guerin decides to keep dumba on and even gives him a pay raise. Guerin has said time and time again dumba is important to this team. Guerin wouldn't cough up 7.5 million for fiala because he had "only 3 good months of hockey" but then holds onto dumba to the point where we will lose him for literally nothing if he doesn't get resigned, while dumba hasn't played actual good hockey in 5 years. Also remember goligoski? Yeah signing him to a 2 year deal worth 2 million a year was totally smart. Goligoski was healthy scratched a lot this season, is like the 8th dman on the team, and we can't move the contract or buy it out due to him being over 35 years old. He 0aid goligoski an extra 4 million dollars for 2 months of good hockey and he was on the decline. Also how has rossi worked out? Horribly. 1 point in 22 or 23 career games. He played half of those games with boldy lol. Yes I have evidence that they did play on a line together with gaudreau being a part of the line. Boldy wasn't able to produce at all when they were on the ice together. Once rossi got sent back down, boldy started playing better. Guys who are younger who got drafted after him played way better with less ice time in fewer games played as well. He is just so bad.
@@qshot9848 lmfao yzerman wouldn't have been that stupid to buyout both suter and parise just to keep dumba. He doesn't mix business with personal life like guerin has with fleury. Yzerman would have been smart enough to ask to waive their no movement clauses so that way they could have been moved for a cheaper cap hit or they would have been exposed and with how much their contracts were they wouldn't have been taken anyways in the expansion draft. He would have had the balls to call them and ask them to actually come and talk to him before buying them out. Guerin called them on their cell phones to tell them over the phone they were being bought out. You don't do that to two guys who gave so much to the community and who loved this team. Parise would have definitely waived his no movement clause. Remember that people were all upset about fleury being moved by vegas and him finding out online, despite the fact the team had already told him that they were looking at possibly trading him to chicago a few weeks earlier. Suter and parise found out they were being bought out when someone called them to tell them guerin was trying to get ahold of them and that they were being bought out. Everyone attacked vegas for their treatment of fleury, but no one will criticize guerin for pulling the same shit but this time not even warning them they were being bought out and the reason why.
Man, I miss those winning times with this Penguins team, oh well, it is what it is. At least, they won 3 cups in 16 seasons, with playoff hockey. I saw this coming from a mile way.
I honestly thought the team would blow it up after the results in 2019 and 2020. I was surprised they kept Sullivan and Rutherford around. I had doubted both of them at that point. 2021 came along and I thought that the team bounced back. Rutherford made the right moves that offseason and then resigned (which was much needed regardless of that offseason). The Penguins won their division and were looking great heading into the playoffs. I truly think that if Jarry didn't get in his head that year, Pittsburgh makes it to the ECF. Unfortunately, Burke, Hextall, and Co. decided to ruin that exciting 2021 team and failed to address goaltending. Jarry and DeSmith were pretty good in 2021-22, but both got hurt at the worst time possible. I don't think they would've gone much farther than the first round last year though. New York was a fluke, you're right about that. If they kept that 2021 team together instead of making some awful decisions, I wonder if the Penguins would still be doing damage. We had everything but goaltending and management did nothing about it. Ruin the defense and bottom six, but fail to address our biggest issue then. It sucks Malkin, Crosby, and Letang played well this season only to miss the playoffs altogether.
I noticed a pattern with this team... Draft franchise changing talents (Lemieux, Crosby, Malkin and Fleury) Retool the team around said talents. Win a cup or two. Kick the can down the road for years after winning said cups. Lose to teams that are inferior on paper in the playoffs, including the Canadiens each time (1998, 2010 AND 2020). And then the cycle continues. Heck, (like I said before) the Habs are to the Penguins like the Penguins were to the Capitals before 2018, they can never beat them in the playoffs. Also, 5:55-7:33 Lol, Toy Story 2 music.
A friend and I (both Flyers fans) all-but high fived when we found out Hexie was hired as Pens GM. He had no clue in Philly and never found one at the other end of Pennsylvania. That's not to say I have enormous confidence in the duo of Jonesy and Briere, but WTF, let's see what happens. It would kind of suck if both Keystone teams were in the toilet for the next few years, but both teams' AHL affiliates had less than stellar seasons. There's not much talent down on the farm for either organization.
Crazy how many missed opportunities the Sharks endured from late 90s til recently. Had that squad been an ounce of the Penguins, they'd win 4 Cups and rule the West for a decade
What's bothersome, is that, a year later, Tree has been proven to be EXACTLY right. it's going to be a very traumatizing summer, mostly because, wait for it, Sidney Crosby is a free agent as of July 1st next year.
Although in a Mike Sullivan system... not likely.
@@N_manMETA11 I would like to think that Rakell would have a 60 point season.
Granlund? Can that mf crack 20 points let alone 60?
Down the stretch I went on a binge of rewatching all the Pens wins in those series. I could feel it coming
i cant believe we lett mcann , rodrigues, blueger, AND marino and matheson all walk. hextall gutted us
@@raradenims like Tree said, Hextall turned us into the Flyers 😡
@@CJEstradaMartinez With those long term, no-trade, buyout-proof contracts? Crosby, Malkin and Letang WILL be around forever.
At least the Capitals won a Cup while they could. And the Penguins were dominant for a good decade or so. Now the Flyers though? They’re kinda fucked. At least Hextall is gone.
Thanks Tree, as a Penguins fan you have no idea how much I needed this.
(He's also a Pens fan)
Chris Pryor was a former scout for the Nashville Predators, btw.
Internal sabotage.
As a Pens fan it hurts but unfortunately it's so true
Fun fact: Jim Rutherford wanted to do a rebuild (yeah, I know) after the 2017 cup run, but Lemieux refused. That’s when he tried to make these crazy moves with his picks.
Seeing "Extend Jeff Carter for two years" Litterally made me unintentionally laugh... why did they do this lmao
Last time the Pittsburgh Penguins missed playoffs was in 2005-06 season and it was Sidney Crosby rookie year Mario Lemuix second retirement
This is what we’ve been waiting for!
I think we all knew this would come out as soon as the Pens missed the playoffs
One of the most anticipated videos of the channel. Accurate.
As a lover of anything with penguins, I approve
5:54 The Toy Story 2 Cleaner music used during the montage of failed Ron Hextall moves was beyond top notch.
Oh the poor penguins when will things start going their way
-Steve dangle
Been both waiting and dreading this video. It's been a long time coming. I've been saying 'blow it up' since the Blackhawks loss but now I realize they can't. At least I'm an out of market fan so I can attempt to ignore the next few years.
Also I love the Sonic music you add to these vids! The boss music from Sonic Spinball is criminally underrated!
When Adam Wylde says we need to be rooting for Ovi and Crosby. As a Red Wings fan, I am delighted to see the streak end.
14:17 Well the Penguins went all in and got Erik Karlsson.
I can't wait for The Hater's Guide to the 2023/24 NHL Season
Jared McCann is more than a depth piece. Guy scored 40 goals this year
That's the problem, he never would've BEEN more than a depth piece in Pittsburgh.
Sullivan's too enamored with Rust and Zucker to even consider McCann in a top 6 role.
He isn't anymore. He was in Pittsburgh.
It pains me to know that a few years down the line the Lightning will have one of these videos...
That's a painful thing to know.
The best bit about this...'The Cleaner' from Toy Story 2. "You can't rush art."
Absolutely loved this video, Tree. I really enjoy your NHL content and I appreciate you taking the time to talk about a less popular league. Hopefully the Pens management realizes they’ve got a lot of work to do to be competitive in the East. It’s a fucking bloodbath over there.
DKC music and Tree’s satirical yet honest commentary. Such an iconic duo.
As a wings fan. I am both giddy and also pray you don’t suffer the deluge of pain we have for the past half decade
It’s halfway through December 2023, the Pens are still trash, and Sully is still the coach. They also haven’t scored a PP goal in over thirty power plays.
Don't forget that Tanev and McCann both had career seasons with the Kraken this year
I am ready for this video, I've been waiting for this for a long time. BRING ON THE SALT!!!
I really enjoy U'Tree hockey content. Hopefully we get an updated version of "Half Century of Failure" when the Leaf's choke again 😊
Flyers need one first
Good news: The Leafs won a round
Bad News: They got nearly swept by the Florida Panthers
Hextall hated the Pens so much in his time at Philly that he infiltrated their organization to purposely tank them 😅😅
Still one of the best channels on RUclips
ik this is a vid ripping into the pens and all but this mans use of terminologies for metaphors is actually top tier
The Caps and the Pens are big braining this year: Can't hilariously choke in the first round of the playoffs if you don't even make em!
As a rangers fan, thanks for losing 6-0 to us at the game I was at
6:00 lmao the Toy Story 2 song
I was at the first bruins penguins game at penguins, watching them blow a 5-2 lead will hold a special place in my heart
The best thing Ron Hextall did as GM of the Flyers...was become GM of the Pens
I don't think you mentioned how awful the Pens special teams were all season long. Case in point, the fact that the Pens gave up crucial shorthanded goals like they were Halloween candy all season long.
Philadelphia Flyers fan:
Welcome to the club.
As a fan of the Wild, thanks for letting us get Bill Guerin. He turned our team from something that should've died of no-cap-space-itis into a formidable foe who made the playoffs.
The Ron Hextall hire made me laugh hysterically
That man has burned more bridges along I-76 than that coal fire has been imploding for a thousand years
@@MarloSoBalJr yes
All this being said though, we did only miss the playoffs by one point. With a good new front office, get someone to replace Letang, and tighten up the goalie situation, I think we could easily get some depth in another playoff run. Crosby and Malkin are still doing well.
Thank you Pens for Bill Guerin
His skill he honed under the Pens dynasty has helped him become one of the best GMs in hockey, reviving a dead Wild team to on the verge of breaking through
Only makes me wonder what if Jim Rutherford went out on top allowing Guerin to take control of the Pens
Holy mother of bandwagon, Batman!
As a pens fan. This is deserved. We are screwed for a while
I honestly thought the team would blow it up after the results in 2019 and 2020.
“I still have no idea how they won the cup in 2017”
*I know he’s been retired for a few years, but is Pekka Rinne still too good right now?*
I noticed a pattern with this team...
Draft franchise changing talents (Lemieux, Crosby, Malkin and Fleury)
Retool the team around said talents.
Let’s face it, we all knew this video was coming
It's always a great day when Tree drops a video
As a Capitals fan, I swear that The Capitals are in similar straits. Could I request a similar autopsy on The Caps?
A friend and I (both Flyers fans) all-but high fived when we found out Hexie was hired as Pens GM. He had no clue in Philly and never found one at the other end of Pennsylvania. That's not to say I have enormous confidence in the duo of Jonesy and Briere, but WTF, let's see what happens. It would kind of suck if both Keystone teams were in the toilet for the next few years, but both teams' AHL affiliates had less than stellar seasons. There's not much talent down on the farm for either organization.
Well done Ron Hextall. Finally he has his revenge on Pittsburgh.
I'd like to add that Ryan Poehling is currently playing well in Philadelphia
As a Sharks fan seeing that 3-1 leaves a bitter feeling in my mouth.
Crazy how many missed opportunities the Sharks endured from late 90s til recently.
Had that squad been an ounce of the Penguins, they'd win 4 Cups and rule the West for a decade
Good. The Hextall double agent plan worked to a T. 😂😂
Good news guys, Chuck Fletcher is available!
What's bothersome, is that, a year later, Tree has been proven to be EXACTLY right. it's going to be a very traumatizing summer, mostly because, wait for it, Sidney Crosby is a free agent as of July 1st next year. If he doesn't retire, despite his age, everyone will be gunning to sign him because of his longevity. I dunno about anyone else but calling up Brandon Yager is needed, & a rebuild is necessary.
As a rangers fan it’s kind wild how Tom Wilson has broken like 4 teams’ brains during his career
The Toy Story 2 music is just so fitting.
At least you brought the Capitals down with you.
Why does that Toy Story music fit so well 😂
I hardly know anything about hockey these days but I watch every single one of these videos. Tree always cracks me up. 😆
Cries in a 50 year cupless streak
I have been waiting for this video for the past 7 years now I can die in peace
14:18 would trading a first round pick for Erik Karlsson count as insanely idiotic?
Yes.
At least Tree has the Pirates to look towards too.
