The older I get, the less absurd this John Candy "punk" character seems. I've got a mohawk, and I'd totally go see a Perry Como show. Oi!
its funny. when ypure young, society thinks youre immature/naive for expressing yourself.
Yet, when youre olfer, its encouraged.
I so agree..this, the 5 neat guys, The Ramblers...they caught the mood and era so well.
I think even then, in regards to that sight gag. It was just symbolizing culture clash. You don't expect to see a punk guy at a Perry Como concert. Big reason for being both people are really far ends of either side of the spectrum. Metaphorically, Perry music is Euthanasia, Punk's is cocaine and steroids.....Hence, the heart of the joke.
Fame! Celebrate! He is so laid Back!
@@HarrisO.R8 A fat line of pure Colombian snow and Perry's "Juke Box Baby..." I'm good to go!
Popular joke from the '50s.
"Did you see Perry Como's Show last night?"
"No, I fell asleep in the middle of it".
"That's alright, so did he".
😆🤣😂🤣🤣
The brilliance of the classic SCTV lineup cannot be understated: John Candy, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, and Rick Moranis. They wrote and performed their own stuff, they had virtually $0 budget, and they made it work.
SNL could never hold a candle to SCTV.
So true!!!👏👏👏
I can watch this sketch a thousand times and i can never stop laughing. Eugene Levy is a comedy legend.
Mikki.. It didn't get any better than this sketch!
Cant stop watching it..
Me too. This sketch is the funniest thing. The best. (LOL)
@@daniellack3559 Thanks for the love, Dan. Good comedy is always timeless. Eugene Levy has made the Perry Como sketch a classic.
I Love the Nightlife ....hahaha...priceless
I bought Perry Como's Christmas album because of this skit. Money well spent.
That is an amazing imitation of Perry Como it sounds exactly like him, which makes it even funnier. Eugene Levy is a genius and so is the rest of the cast.
Bruce.. Agreed fully this was Gene at his finest
@@daniellack3559 He most certainly was.
They are all so unbelievably talented.
@@TheMary0831 They certainly are.
@@brucegordon7248And I loved Dave Thomas as the quintessential Perry Como fan!
Perry's been dead for over 20 years and he's more relaxed than ever.
SCTV was far better than SNL. Used to watch it all the time on public television. No live audience, which actually made it even funnier. Great cast loaded with talent.
Yes, when something like this is funny we don’t need a cue to laugh.
It's because they were all about humor,
not slanted politics.
Americans don't do humour, just sarcasm.
Well...they did use a laugh track on SCTV. I could have done without that. I thought the skits were funny enough to stand on their own.
When i first saw this bit, i laughed for at least 10 minutes
I remember seeing this hilarious sketch when it first aired!
1:42 the microphone on the pillow lol 😂
3 people thought this performance was a "little too uptempo"
I was watching this when it was first aired. My (silly, dopey) roommate came in and thought that this was real. She had never heard of SCTV.
Background singers: "Gonna live forever, ain't gonna die!" lolol
I almost feel like I have to watch this every day or else I'm not myself.
He’s sooo relaxed
One of the greatest TV comedy sketches of all time.
He even blinks relaxed...lol.
Andrea holding Eugene up by the sweater. LOL.
In the late 1980s I was in a school play and I sang this version of Celebrate during soundcheck and had everyone laughing so hard 😂❤
omygosh the one finger tap on the floor. SCTV was the absolute BEST
Every two bars!!! Perry was never one to gild the lily.
And the Juul Haalmeyer Dancers!
So funny...and so uncoordinated.
The finger taps during “What I Did for Love” get me every single time.
Interesting how Perry is so relaxed he can’t stand up.
Gene did a great job acting the part!
when he was laying on floor , i almost died ! Hilarious
Hilarious! My dear father's favorite singer of all time and I can hear him laughing at this. Miss you every day dad.
Donna.. Your Dad had great taste.. Not only a wonderful singer/entertainer, but a real family man married 50 yrs to same woman, adored father etc
Ive just seen this 4 the first time in at least 30yrs! LAUGHING IN TEARS! OVER N OVER AGAIN! CAN'T STOP! WON'T STOP!
One of the greatest comedy sketches of all time.
This sketch totally laid out my mother and sister. I'll never forget it. 😂
Candy: OY!
"Mr. Relaxation." (laughs) Oy!
I loved it.
Perry was great. When inducted into some music hall of fame Perry insisted on using this SCTV clip.
They didn't come any better than Perry as a person
There is a statue of Como in Canonsburg PA. 📻🎤🎵
That's SO fabulous
Oh he must have laughed. He’s famous for being relaxed and laid back.
This never fails to crack me up. One of the most well-conceived and best-executed comedy skits of all time. Everything about it hits exactly right.
This was one of my favorite SCTV skits. I laughed so hard at this. And I still did.
Como loved this skit....He had a sense of humor.
This was real comic genius -- very rare.
I saw this the night it first aired. I was 11. It _slayed_ then and still does.
""Im going boggie on downtown " love the disco backup singers. The whole skit is genius.
Quick announcer’s gag at the end, “Tickets are still available. Don’t hurry.”
An excerpt of Perry singing ELO's Turn to Stone: "Yes, I'm turnin' to stone ... 'Cause you ain't comin' home ... Why ain't you comin' home ... If I'm turnin' to stone ... You've been gone for so long ... And I can't carry on ... Yes, I'm turnin', I'm turnin' ... I'm ... turnin' ... to ... stone."
The first 15 times I watched this, I laughed so hard, I cried.
I've watched it several dozen times. I still laugh like a goofball every time.
Semi-comatose, still one of my favorite lines.
It's good!
I wish these songs were actually on an album because they are really quite good!
Yeah, I'd pay good money for an album.
@@sergey_is_sergey SCTV did several skits along the lines of K-Tel records at the time, in which they parody various genres. Hilarious, needless to say.
One of the most hilarious parodies ever done by SCTV. And considering their overall work, that is high praise indeed.
Rick Moranis as the dancer who is disliked by the other dancers, haha! Brilliant!
It's a bit up tempo, but it still gives me a smile everytime!
Kiss Today........................................Goodbye
😆😂🤣😂🤣
Rick Moranis in that white boy fro looks EXACTLY like my dad around this time when my parents got married. Dances like him too.
Great sketch. The makeup on Levy reminds me of those guys on Fireball XL5.
@ Joe Wright : And back in the early 1980's without any make-up or disguises, Eugene Levy looked like Mike Mercury from Supercar.
1:30 John Candy looking definitely NOT like your usual Perry Como fan. "Mr Relaxation ! Oy " LOL
Saw this as a kid, still my biggest awareness of Perry Como!
This is gold
My sides are splitting!
One of the BEST comedy sketches....EVER!!!
Never forget how brilliant this show was.
I unironically like his cover of Celebration.
This is one of my all-time favorite sketches ... I remember I couldn't stop laughing at it when I was a kid... hahaha ... Thanks for posting.. :D
So amazing. Mr. Relaxation under the covers on the sofa. So genius
Watch Rick Moranis dancing in the chorus. The ladies (I dont know if they wrote the additional lyrics or not)
All terrific. I have so much respect for Eugene and all of them.
I love all of them.
Still funny after all this time !
Took a wrong turn in Swissvale and couldn't get to the Arena in time for the show.
And he went on to live another 20 years after this!
Damned this is hilarious. Every time I see this it sends me to hysterics.
Amazing
Absolutely a favorite....and we were kids during the Perry Como TV years!
Yeah we had to watch this instead of Have Gun Will Travel
SCTV better than Saturday night live😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
This only gets better over time.
So good that I could remember this from the mid 80’s when I last saw it, and it’s great to hear/see it again!
This is the greatest...just love it!
Brilliant. And the best part was the man himself loved it.
I’m so happy I was raised on SCTV
Rick Moranis with fro and chest hair is hilaire!
Originally, wasn't there another audience interview insert with Joe Flaherty saying, "Perry is tops in my book. He made me just wanna get up and stretch"?
It's in another version of this skit. This one has better colour, but the other is more complete.
@@tonirose6776 It's probably a syndicated version.
Yes! It's currently second in the RUclips lineup.
@@tonirose6776 Thank you!
Sublime.
Love Perry.
Perry Como was a barber from Canonsburg, Pa. He was the most laid-back singer who ever lived.
So ahead of there time!!!
Precursor for Weekend at Bernies
Still hilarious. SCTV was the best.
i mean come on. i watched this show from day one and i cant imagine life without it
Perry Coma, omg, whenever I hear about him, I think of this skit!!
Those dancers lol Rick Moranis with the glasses and Afro lol Those who gave this a thumbs down are the same people who think Kanye West is a national treasure.
The I Will Survive cover is actually really good. I also love John Candy in this sketch.
so brilliant, touching, hilarious lol
Perry was very much alive, and performing, when this sketch originally aired.
This kills me cuz my mother loved him
My brother used to call him Perry Coma
Two observations about this awesome sketch:
1). Dave Thomas dressed a la Mr Rogers.
2). Perry is so out of touch with the world of popular culture he pronounces "boogie" as "bogey" a la the golf term.
Brilliant.
SO true. Thanks for adding that.
I hurt every time after watching this.... Eugene slays it.
I love the nightlife ..... I love to boogie !
Uh...that's Bogey. (as in golf)
Brilliant comedy.
Perry Como stated he didn't realized he was so relaxed
BWAHAHAHAHA.....awesome.
I would have sworn to my last breath that Perry Como was in a coffin in this sketch, but only a bed, under the covers.
...have to admit. Eugene Levy had 'ol Perry close to a coffin.
@@Jason1920 I think I just assumed this was the next stage of this joke. Singing from a coffin for "Still Alive". I remember my anticipation even more than reality.
John Candy is amazing in this.
Oi!
He totally came up with that hairdo himself 😂
Priceless lol
Pure genius.
The Dude Abides
Mr. C would have loved this
He DID love it! He included it in a montage when he was honored by some hall of fame...he insisted (another RUclipsr told me this). I know he loved it because he acknowledged it at the Emmy Awards when he was either presenting or making a speech. Damn, that was a long time ago, but I remember that! The cast was floored!
He loves the night life
This is so hilarious, I'm dying,
come on, Jason, celebrate good times!!!
I *love* to bogie!
Brutal.
