I love how Orson takes the turkey when he's leaving
Dave's impression of Liberace is spot on and his reaction to the whip is devastatingly funny.
When Martin Short said in his book that the true stars of SCTV were the hair/makeup dept., he definitely wasn't lying.
viaductdreams And I honestly thought that he looked like Dave Thomas
Luigi Speca was Juul's mentor.
Awesome trivia!
I miss John Candy, he was a genius.
Dave Thomas! 🤣 There were no weak links in the SCTV cast, every one was so funny and talented.
Dave Thomas' impression of Liberace was unmatched.
I have no idea how one could impersonate Elton John but Rick nailed it.
mistermalta Plus he was actually playing! Rick’s got many musical talents
@@dougaltitus08 The Gerry Todd Show. Also, Moranis put out a musical parodies LP that was BRILLIANT
Much better than Taron
Gay Eddie Munster
To be fair, since it wasn't an impression that involved speaking, a lot of credit goes to the costume department, because that getup actually looks like something Elton John would have worn at the time.
Elton John kicking the glittery soccer ball and knocking Liberace into the piano, hilarious!
That whole piano duel was the best part of this.
Liberace, Elton John, Orson Welles, and Ethel Merman. Who could ask for anything more.
John Candy could read an insurance policy and I'd laugh my ass off. His comic genius is truly missed
I love that he stole a chicken on the way out the door
Andrea Martin never gets enough love on these SCTV clips. She was so good. Best female performer on SCTV or SNL ever imo.
I absolutely agree, Edith Prickley in "Prickly Heat" , one of the best.
well, come on now, Catherine O'Hara was equally brilliant
Loved Andrea's performance in "Club Paradise," which had a few other SCTV alumni in it. Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty... led by Robin Williams and Peter O'Toole.
Pity it wasn't a bigger success. It's always been one of my favorite movies of the 80's. =)
Great love for Andrea Martin but Katherine O'hara was a powerhouse comedian even then and her decades long career has been filled with great performances. I consider Ohara/Levy to be the funniest and most consistent comedy duo of the last 40 years.
"You know, Christmas is a frivolous time of year, and nobody loves frivolity more than me." LOL!
These skits by SCTV were from the early 80's, yet they remain as supremely funny over 30 years later. That is the mark of true, timeless comedy.
Now make that 40 years
I was born in 1964 and got to see SCTV from the very beginning. We lived in Sudbury and didn't have cable TV in the early years so had few channels. I always thought it was hilarious and wondered how it would ever be bettered. Nothing's even come close. Andrea Martin is my favourite. The way she commits to it like her performance here. They're all excellent but I laugh harder from the first moment with her. Or Catherine O"Hara when she does Lola Falana and shouts out loud to the audience "I want to bare all your children." Funniest line ever. It looks so easy. Just a bunch of goofs getting together and clowning around. How come nothing like this has been done since? And with the nonsense going on in the world today a person in a coma could write perfect scripts. Bob and Doug even did an excellent Christmas album. I couldn't get into it when it went to NBC. That's most of what's available today so I watch some of it.
I LOVE this, but... it's by no means "timeless" since it relies completely on knowing four entertainers that my youngest friends know nothing about.
Forget SNL...SCTV was and is the best ever. There are some absolute gems from these guys. They are sorely missed. R.I.P. John Candy.
Agree 100%!
Agree 86.5%
Steven Conrad I'm with you. The concept of watching awful television shows aired by a Melonville TV station was inspired, and then the SCTV cast members, who also wrote the show, were so unbelievably talented.
+Steven Conrad 1,000,000,000,000% true!
Steven Conrad yep. SCTV will never be topped. Best cast ever!!!!
Dave Thomas does a better Liberace than Liberace himself! SCTV was such an awesome and underrated show, so much funnier than SNL...evidence being the number of stars who got their start on SCTV...Long Live SCTV!!
Lee's outfit, (by 'Louis Speca.') at the end - the red-sequined Santa number, with the ostrich-feather trim - so big, he's almost unable to see the piano, as he's playing (and then, when he stands, and it's got even MORE feathers by the waist) is hilarious. He looks like an over-stuffed bird in a Santa suit.
'Crunchy...I'm sorry, did I say crunchy?'
His whole freak out as Welles absolutely kills. The yelling at the studio techs and directors, the storm off with the turkey...just absolutely great.
It was probably inspired by this: ruclips.net/video/OhWM4_pIKVg/видео.html
This definitely satirizes his frozen pea commercials - decades before they became famous on the internet.
Orson Welles being the difficult, perfectionist director even if it's just a minor TV appearance. Hilarious!
And stealing the turkey when he walks off
The costumes and make-up are incredible.
And the unusual funny thing is giving Luigi Speca of Toronto (a real guy) on-camera credit.
. .yeah. .Every Skit...
When Ethel's around, there are no silent nights.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
the piano off with Elton is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. So brilliant
The best comedy ever. Dave Thomas was Liberace in this skit ! And John Candy was hilarious as Orson Welles !
"I'm fire him, Orson."
This show never missed! We'll never see this kind of talent again.
Everyone on SCTV, their imitations were flawless and very funny.
@0:51 The serious Rick Morans' look of being up-staged is priceless!
This whole skit makes Christmas fun - being "bright and showy (gay)."
Andrea Martin' s Ethel Merman... hilarious!
And Silent Night too..too funny!
Brilliant: When Moranis as Elton getting the mirrored disco ball and kicking it at the wall like a volleyball and letting it hit Thomas on the head and he falling into the piano. Too funny!
"Deep and crisp and.... crunchy...." LOL.
seen this dozens of times
Wells taking the Turkey with him
is still funny
SCTV was wonderful
+George Symons I can't stop laughing!!!!!
George Symons yes. Him taking the turkey was great. They never missed a joke
I can't get over all those silver baubles on "Elton John's" hat. Over the top!!!
How is it Elton John is/was more extra than Liberace?
Every time I watch one of these, I can’t help but say thing like “man, Moranis was incredible!” or “Dave Thomas was incredible!” There will NEVER be such an assembly of comedic talent as SCTV. Glad and privileged to have grown up watching these people.
They were best. Too much talent for one show!
"You people are pests!" I love it, because he really said that once IRL!!
Dave Thomas is a better Liberace than Michael Douglas was!!!
Damn THAT M. Douglas movie was really disturbing
Oh God that movie.
He’s a better Liberace than Liberace.
@Wizzo Brodien never been near any of them Billy dee Williams the other side of a glass office building door though
Just Hysterical!!
Holy shit when John Candy as Orson Welles takes the whole turkey at the end I died.
for me these are the kings and queens of comedy, of course including the other SCTV folks - Catherine, Joe, Martin, and Eugene.
Andrea Martin as "Ethel Merman" is priceless but even better is the dueling pianos between Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. I love the part where Rick kicks the bouncing DISCO ball at Dave's head. I'll bet it was hard for them to keep a straight face during the filming of this.
SCTV was the absolute best ever, the finest in the history of comedy television! SNL had its okay moments, but it never, ever measured up to the quality and real genius of SCTV.
This has got to be one of the best shows in TV comedy history. I remember watching it away back in the late 70's when it first premiered, late night of course, and thought it was great and quirky, liking the fact that it came from Canada. It had a different intro then, I remember "and Dave Thomas as the Beaver:. Does anyone else? Anyway, I have all the DVD sets and the early ones of course were the best. This one is a classic!
Orson grabs a turkey on his way out.
+I.P. Knightly lol
CandyS Orson Wells taking the shellacked turkey as he leaves in disgust is one of the greatest moments in the history of sketch comedy. 😅😅😅 .
this is one of the funniest skits i have ever seen..............kills me every time.
LOL how orson calmly scoopes away the turkey
wow, best orson welles EVER lol
"deep and crisp and… crunchy…"
gets me every time xD
Love it when Orson screams at the cameraman!! The best part of Good King Wensclas.
Having Andrea "Ethel Merman" bellow out "Silent Night" is a stroke of genius, LOL!
John Candy's Orson Welles was great especially if you were familiar with the debacle he created when Welles was trying to do voiceover work in a frozen vegetables commercial. He was even more riled up in the audio tapes that are possibly online on YT.
Maurice LaMarche did a great Orson wells on 'the critic' paradying that commercial as well
It's crazy how small of a laugh the head in the piano gag got, like only one guy laughed
Ethel Merman singing Silent Night is classic
OMG..and when this thing aired, the Liberace gay thing was something really huh-hush at least publicly.
Genius..
True.
Wrong. It was hush hush in the '50's, not in the 80's
@@Ptpop wrong
Dave Thomas was hilarious as Liberace. The piano duel between Rick Moranus playing Elton John and Dave Thomas’ Liberace is comedic gold.
Ooohh, I love that kind of whipping at the beginning.
I have a feeling that Lee really did love it too. He and his Mini-Me probably acted that out quite often.
I used to think that maybe Dave Thomas was the weak link in the SCTV lineup....Until I saw his Liberace....Dave Thomas Is Brilliant!!
John Candy as orson wells. You can tell hes actually seen the man work many times
I saw this the night it aired ... and was delighted to find it several years ago here on YT. Year after year I view it ... not just at Christmas ... but at least 3 times a year. Liberace inspired me in my youth to become an entertainer ... he was my idol, but I have a sense of humor too ... and this is fantastically funny I
So johnny grabs the turkey on his way out haha!!!🤣 . Priceless.
Look at the outrageous outfits - feathers, glitter, etc. "Elton John's" hat with all those silver balls all over it . Too much!!!
This was probably the inspiration:
ruclips.net/video/zaWh0RPVfcs/видео.html
I loved how Orson took the whole goose while indignantly walking off.
John Candys Orson Welles was fantastic!!
Love how Candy grabs the turkey on his way out 😂
Those Liberace costumes were great.
They obviously invested a lot of time and effort into this sketch - in terms of the soundtrack and the costumes - but the result is pure gold
What an amazing costume and makeup department they had, what outfits on Liberace and Elton John!
Am sorry Lee, he was moving,,, haha! classic
3:09 "You people are pests. No money is worth this."
I gotta use that line next time I quit a job.
I love the way they keep moving up the key of "Good King Wenceslas" every time he tries again. It's those little touches...
i love edna boil. andrea's gestures are so perfectly badly timed it is hysterical. that can't be easy, and she is seamless.
LMAO!! That was the funniest show on TV hands down!!!🤣🤣🤣
I love this so much, have for years. Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, John Candy & Andrea Martin, comedy Christmas GOLD!
All too funny but Ethel Merman aka Andrea Martin belting out silent night is my favorite moment....
The great talent and satire of SCTV. I used to watch it all the time. I love how they whip Liberace and John Candy’s Orson Wells is so funny. Such a great show.
If you want to see Orson Welles look up his frozen peas out takes.
ruclips.net/video/Ol5RpDEzLzY/видео.html
Love the Liberace Xmas special!!! John Candy as Orson Welles is the GOAT!!!
this is just the best sketch.
Fantastic!
SCTV Christmas special with John Candy is a must see. Hope he finally got the crane shot he always wanted.
Good ol' days of humor
This was brilliant! I can't believe this is the first SCTV skit I've ever seen :)
100% spot on Ethel Mermen
They always "nailed 'em!"
Well, a caricature...Ethel was actually an incredible singer, performer for and of her time. Also had a great sense (see Mad Mad Mad World) of humour and probably would have found this hilarious
Damn can you imagine if he actually did a dueling piano thing with Elton John? I wonder what Elton John thought about Liberace.
This was a really wonderful series. It came on late Friday night in Chicago, and I never missed a show. SCTV was FAR FAR better than SNL in every way.
SCTV knew when to end.
SNL doesnt.
Most of our best TV shows never last more than ten years.
I miss this show soooooooooo much! :'(
This scene is the funniest thing that's ever been on television.
🤣 Such great memories and laughter watching these comedy greats. It was hilarious then, and now!
This show laid SNL to waste even in the SNL glory days in its first 5 years. Thank God for RUclips.
Ethel Merman singing Silent Night. Hysterical.
And the popping light bulbs
Absolute geniuses, every one of these people. Incredible, lol. That Candy impression was based off actual Orson Welles outtakes from a frozen peas commercial he was doing VO for. Do yourself a favor and look that up. Some of the lines are verbatim from that tape. SCTV forever.
The video of Welles doing the Paul Masson commercial while drunk is pure gold. He also had a meltdown while doing a commercial for Gordon's Fish Filets
Oh maaaan! This is one of my favorites! I love Andrea Martin as Ethel Merman!
I miss this show, as well! I remember staying up until 2:00 am on Friday nights, audio-taping the show, as it ran on NBC! It was always the high point of my week. Thank God I have the whole DVD collection! Thanks for posting!
he was moving !!! yes you.... please, were trying to work here
Liberace bearing a strong resemblance to Eddie Munster
My all time favorite skit is when Lon Chaney Jr. replayed an indian role and threw a nutcracker at William B. on the Sammy Maudlin Show and Sammy says, " What is this, Frontier Nutcracker " ???
I have always loved the SCTV Christmas skits, this one and 'The Fella who couldn't wait for Christmas' being my favorites.
I wonder, was it intentional that no one on the crew corrected Mr. Welles ( John Candy ) on his mispronunciation of the name Wenceslas because they were afraid of being reprimanded ?
Brilliance! This is so incredibly funny. I never tire of seeing it.
Love it!
John Candy is my favorite!!
God Almighty....Right After Thanksgiving 2022 And THIS STILL BRINGS TEARS OF LAUGHTER TO MY EYES❣️
Ethel Merman sings the silenest of Silent Nights. LOL! to the decoration balls popping!
Love it.
this is just TOO GOOD !!!
F....! They got me! I didn't first realize they aren't the real ones! Maybe the real ones weren't really real but played by John Candy and Rick Moranis. At least Liberace seems real to me. And if not: WOW! AND WOW AGAIN!
Fantastic, what talent.
