The clip of Barbara singing with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra is just as surreal. Judy’s talk show was treated as an afterthought by CBS and the main executives, who publicly hated her. Only lasted one season, and inexplicably scheduled against bonanza.
For those of you who are too young, you have here 3 of the most iconic entertainers of the 20th century, together. All 3 were accomplished singers and actresses. Merman was mostly known for theater, of course Judy was known as much for film and TV as for her voice, Streisand with a major Broadway career, songbird and later a huge film actress. Stunning to see them all together.
The most amazing thing about Ethel is she had NO STAGE FRIGHT. Not even on an opening night. Never. And this is all her life. It is beyond confidence - the stage is like her home space.
The well-known anecdote about the opening night of Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway: just before curtain time, backstage, a member of the ensemble asks Merman, "Oh Miss Merman, aren't you nervous?" and Merman replies: "Why should I be nervous? I know my lines."
It is hard to imagine a time when Barbra was not “BARBRA STREISAND.” But at the time of this appearance on Judy’s variety show, she was merely an up and coming singing sensation on the verge of super stardom. I mean, she had made a bit of a splash, but this was before Funny Girl had opened on Broadway. No wonder she was nervous and seemed overwhelmed; plus Merman was her brassy self. So lucky to have this little tv moment from yesterday preserved.
Most young people will never understand how much enormous talented was present on that stage with these three ladies...each one...so incredibly gifted performers.
Real talent comes rarely-these ‘Dames’ got it! Beautiful. Fantastic voices. Stage presence. Light that comes from within! Will never see REAL NATURAL talent like them again. No gimmicks like crap today.❤
This clip is legendary. Three of the all-time greats. But Barbra was just starting out, and kept a bit to the background, while the other two legends just let it fly. Judy and Ethel were both great admirers of Streisand as her star kept rising.
You can tell Barbra was holding back and allowing her elders to have their moment. I love when artists are in the presence of their peers (who they enjoy) and step back. Barbra stands on her own, but made sure she didn’t take away from the legends she was onstage with that night. ❤️
Streisand became the Mariah of Divas live with Aretha when they started singing. She didn't want to over sing legends and just sang back up. I love this clip because it shows that no matter the period gifted singers will respect each other in moments and humble themselves among greats.
Bob Malack C’mon seriously. Peggy Lee had a range of about three notes. You may not like Streisand, but there’s no denying her talent and technique. She’s been at the top of show biz for 50 years, and for good reasons.
Barbra was just a few months from becoming a super star and she blew all of the other singers out of the water. No one could touch her talent in a Broadway musical, movies, recordings, or concerts.
All the gay men must have been tingling in their seats watching Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand TOGETHER! And then along comes Ethel Merman like a steamroller.
What I love was three fabulous voices that you would know who was singing without seeing them. Each woman way a dynamo on their own and in their own time.
Two Icons Ethel & Judy on one stage back in the 1960's what a dream come true for Barbara who was just starting out but learned a lot from watching i bet because by the 70's it was Super stardom for Barbara in her own right and the rest is history.
@@Itstonytime77 She did the same thing in the movie, "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World". She slipped on a banana peel in the last scene and it was the biggest laugh in a three hour movie!
The thing that really strikes me here is that this is a clip from a standard TV Variety show (albeit one with Judy Garland at the helm). A TV SHOW. Back when there were three networks and maybe three UHF stations. The quality here, the CLASS here, the TALENT up here on that stage, it is truly mind-blowing. What a treat!!
CBS spent a great deal of money on this show. Judy had a full orchestra with Mort Lindsey conducting. The concert shows were excellent and we are fortunate to have them.
Notice how in tune Judy is with other people's feelings. At 4:28, she notices Barbra hanging back a bit, maybe feeling a bit left out or not knowing what to do, and reaches over and grabs her to bring her into the fold.
I just love watching Babs taking this all in. So innocent and so young. And then to hear her mention Funny Girl being her next project which made her out to be larger than life. This is simply wonderful to watch. And then Judy - and then Ethel - all three amazing talents!
I remember when that was aired I believe it was a 1963. At that time I didn't know about Barbara Streisand but with these two big stars singing this song at her side I never forgot her and she became just as big indeed. What a hell of a trio I must say.
The First time i have EVER seen babs be in awe, speechless, respectful and humble. Its like Mariah with Patti labelle and ARETHA Franklin sharing stage.
Judy Garland is a darling person the way she talked to Barbara Streisand who by the way looks gorgeous . Ethel Merman whaaaaaaat a voice all three of them together they’re perfect .
Merman was primarily known as a belter and this was one of her signature songs. Judy and Barbra were clearly holding back to feature and not diminish Merman. Both could sing rings around Merman. Merman would never have agreed to this bit on any other terms.
I can't watch her without fighting back the tears. When I was a kid they would present the Wizard of Oz every autumn before Halloween and then I remember I was around 9 when my mom told me Dorothy died of poison. I cried for days. I was so in love with her and had no idea that the movie had been made 30 years earlier and that Dorothy was a grown woman in her 40's. All I knew was that sweet child who beat the wicked witches every year.
A moment in time that can never be duplicated again ! 3 of the biggest stars in the entertainment business. Three icons. Three living legends, together at one time. Boy were we lucky ! 💜💜💜👍
And we are lucky enough to have seen it I remember this night on Judy Garland show it was amazing and yes Barbara was extremely nervous even when she just sang with Judy but imagine having Ethel Merman walk in oh my Lord I would have been on the floor
One of the greatest moments in 1960's television without a doubt. Barbra, Judy, and Ethel together!. I love it when Ethel advises Barbra to be careful about her dressing room and when Ethel blows Judy over because she's lost so much weight and - well - I just love it ALL!
Each of these women had their own star shine. But Judy was the queen. Barbra is a technician. Songs are a showcase for her voice. But Judy always showcased the song, every nuance of it with her entire heart and soul. That frail tiny bird of a woman could sing up a hurricane.
WOW!! I am so glad that, over the years, they were able to keep and maintain this piece of video....all three great ones, together!!! Simply, ....Amazing!!! Love 'Em All !!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🎼🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶🎤🎤
Judy seemed like she was a bundle of nerves. The competitive energy among these 3 stars must have been intense. Ethel definitely flexing her muscles here.
When I was a little girl in the 70s, Ethel was old. The teens and young adults around me thought of her as a joke and mocked her (by then) warbly vocals by singing this song. Once I got to film school in the early 90s, I saw a short she'd done in 1930 called Her Future, and WOW! I gained a lot of respect for her talent.
I love all three of those great singers. Merman, Garland, and Streisand on the same stage Yes, they are all legends, and their talent speaks for itself.
Me too and it’s great! I appreciate she was nervous but from what she says, it comes across as she may have a touch of regret too - that her reluctance to join in with more heart or sincerity, may have made her look like she thought she was too good for the song - and that wasn’t her intention. Listening to her audiobook is very eye-opening and I have a lot more sympathy tor her. I always felt, watching this scene as a huge Judy fan, that it was the perfect example of Barbra not being a ‘good sport’ or team player. I love Babs, but like all of us, she can be self-conscious. I appreciate her human failings more than ever now.
Last time in her life that Barbra gave in and let Ethel take over...FUNNY GIRL yet to open on Broadway would launch her to stardom early 1960s with the movie version in 68 giving her an OSCAR. Now she's almost 80.
Barbra Streisand has admitted to having terrible stage fright and I think she was maybe having a little on this show with these two big stars at that time.
Why do I miss that era so and I wasn't even alive then?! : ) Ethel & Judy were consumate entertainers and Barbra was definitely in the cresendo of her career. Who is there to carry the torch now? : (

Saw Judy on concert 3 times...got backstage once and got her autograph (On my birthday..what a present) She was incredible every time. Nobody like her.
Yes. A TRUE talent. She could knock em dead with slow songs such as Somewhere over the Rainbow , and you could feel the emotion , and she could sing a fast upbeat song that made you feel empowered by her strong powerful voice. Her daughter Liza had her talent as well. ❤🎤👏😘
I never liked Merman. Loud, crass, and I found her voice really irritating. Never a softness to anything she sang. Now, Judy, that was real talent. She could sing loud and also soft and tender. The same with Barbra.
the fact that this clip exists is surreal
Rudolf IX I so agree. This clip is not pure gold, it is platinum
The clip of Barbara singing with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra is just as surreal. Judy’s talk show was treated as an afterthought by CBS and the main executives, who publicly hated her. Only lasted one season, and inexplicably scheduled against bonanza.

It’s fun to see Barbra sorta shy and starstruck before she took the world by storm!!
I listened to every album, as they were released. they are brill

Now there’s cardi b and Katy Perry grinding on stage 🤮
Judy was extremely generous, always making sure Barbara was included. Like a proud mama! Barbara was so shy here.
You can tell Judy actually liked and respected Barbra.
Barbra was only 21, but she seems so much more poised and mature.
So nervous

She also wasn't gonna even try competing with Ethel. 🤣
I think she was a bit shy here
It’s so touching, Judy Garland giving a fledgling Barbra Streisand her blessing. And meaning it. Pass the torch; set the world on fire.

As a gay man, I can confirm that!
What a funny notion that, at one point in history, Barbra was so new and the idea of mentioning Funny Girl seemed quaint.
