Madonna actually has good comedic timing. She was just rarely offered the right roles. Barbra's appearance here is legendary. She was so fond of this skit that she had Mike bring the character on tour with her.
If you find an old Will & Grace where Madonna plays a roommate...a natural at comedy, what blows my mind is she was offered the role of Trinity in The Matrix before Carrie Ann Moss.
I've long thought that Madonna cannot let her guard down, is too self conscious in roles to embrace her characters, thus comes off stiff. And, that this is the best acting I've seen her perform, by far.
She was great in Desperately Seeking Susan bc she didn't gaf whatsoever. Then she got worldwide and started taking herself a bit too seriously. I can't even watch Evita. What a joke to upraise that person. But yeah for a sec she was a cool chic
I caught that too. When she starts doing the bowing to royalty thing and then her ongoing reaction, you can tell she’s sincerely excited and my guess is at that phase of her fame Madonna didn’t get starstruck very easily.
Way back in the 80's when Madonna was shooting to the top, many established stars and singers would diss her and her singing abilities. This was around the time Mick Jagger publicly said she had a voice like Minnie Mouse on helium. Madonna said in an interview she'd met Barbra Streisand and she had been really nice to her, and just said, "go for it kid". At that time she was possibly the only major talent to be supportive of her....
This is the most natural I have seen Madonna letting her guard down. Even when she is acting she tends to be someone acting upon an act if that makes sense. This skit was hilarious! They all look wonderful!

More material? They have NO material. Haven't watched the show in 15 years. The "highlights" aren't even funny. I can just imagine how bad the rest of the show must be,
They can’t because everyone is such an offended snowflake these days. No one can laugh anymore at themselves or stereotypes and we’re worse off because of it. So glad I grew up back then when we used to laugh until we cried at snl. Now all the actors would be cancelled and the liberal news channels would be screaming telling everyone to never watch the show again.
That's probably because it was genuine. Barbra's cameo was unscripted. She'd just happened to be in the area and pulled one on Mike Myers and subsequently the viewing audience. It was a big story back in the day.
@Lost Vocals Mike Myers did NOT know she was gonna come on. Barbara very pointedly said : "So nobody knew I was gonna do it. Mike Myers knew I might come on........". You do understand the difference between "might come on " and " will come on', right? Exactly what part of " Nobody knew I was gonna do it," did you not understand??? Duh. That is precisely why he WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED and showed it ! The sketch was over at that point , and he very likely had given up thinking she was coming on at all. He's been in awe of her and was obviously totally shocked when she suddenly appeared out of nowhere at the last second. Stop trying to be a smartass, dude, his surprise was very genuine. You're making it sound like it was just an act. He was just as surprised and in shock, as the girls. Please work on your reading comprehension, and maybe buy a new pair of eyes.
Eh.. Me being a NYer, she didn't do as well as I'd have hoped... And I'm as big a Madonna fan as they are Streisand fans! lol SHE'S LIKE BUTTUH!!!!! lol
I liked her performance in Evita but not that one speaking part. It felt so unnatural. The only time I ever found Madonna to be natural at acting was in Who’s That Girl. Now, the character was way over the top but she was supposed to be. Think of her as a Harley Quinn prototype. Madonna should have worked with that director more often because he was able to get her to be an actress.
I still watch this from time to time! What a damn great surprise!!! So good they kept Streisand's appearance a secret. Wish we had more spontaneous moments like this on TV today.
Mike Myers is GOLD. Madonna does some of her best acting in this scene. Myer’s and Madonna’s response to Streisand’s walk on cameo is fabulous. I remember watching this live back in ‘92 and I never knew until later that Streisand’s appearance was not scheduled. It’s a SNL legendary moment for sure! I miss these SNL moments.
The true and spontaneous reactions brings tears to my eyes regardless of how many times I've watched this. Mike, Madonna, Roseanne, and of coworce Bah-bra. Brilliant.
***** Barbra was having dinner nearby and heard they were doing the sketch that night and decided to just do a last minute walk on. Their reactions are real. None of them knew she was going to walk on at the end. Lorne Michaels probably knew but no one else.
I loved this when it originally aired. Roseanne was the host, so even Madonna doing this sketch was a surprise, because she was not billed, and did nothing else on the show that night. And of course, Barbra's totally unexpected appearance is just amazing.
I really love Madonna in this classic clip. And I never tire of Barbra walking on in that floppy dark hat and sunglasses. Just perfect💝💝💝 And all the hand gestures and the great buffant hair and fluffy blonde wig are hysterical!!
I grew up in Miami. I've met these women at least a thousand times. Nothing like seeing the snowbirds wearing their mink coats on a 75 degree night weighted down with every piece of jewelry they own.
I know a lot of American snowbirds. I was on 14Ave NYC behind a n Alaskan tourist he was telling his wife, it was a heat wave, he didnt believe NYC was so HOT in May...I'm freezing n dying of laughter at d same time! Dif stroke 4 different folk!
@@TheresaPowers Snowbirds are New Yorkers, as well as ANYONE in the northern colder winter states, who go to Florida for the winter. Umh... yeah, snowbirds can be Canadians, too. You don't know wtf you're talking about.
This is what they mean by Golden Moments of TV! All of them were wonderful ❤️.Barbra was perfectly timed as usual, despite unscheduled stop. This skit ALWAYS gets me to a good place. Thanks for it
Surprisingly, the three of them had chemistry and were funny together. Madonna should have tried comedic roles and she probably would have had success in acting.
She did try comedy - did you see Who’s That Girl? It was awful. Desperately Seeking Susan had launched her acting career quite successfully, but then Shanghai Surprise and Who’s That Girl came along and nearly derailed her acting career. It wasn’t that she was a bad comedic actor, but rather that the movies were just terrible. That’s probably why she went for more dramatic roles after that.
@DaveTexas Oh my God, I love who's that girl! It reminds me of my childhood. It was 6 when that movie came out but that soundtrack was my 1st cassettes!
To think Madonna declined Barbra's invite many years prior into having a duet with her. Then this! Madonna is starstruck and shows Babs lots of respect!
NEVER HAPPENED. Streisand thought about a duet on her Back to Broadway Album in 1993 -- 2 yrs after this, it was going to be madonna or bette midler, but she already was doing 2 duets on the album and opted NOT to do a third. She later recoreded the would be song with Melissa McCarthy in 2016 -- Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.
that never happened. this episode was in 1992. streisand sang pop from 1972 until 1984, when she announced she was 'returning to her roots' and just singing broadway and traditional. Madonna came on the scene in 1984 and became HUGE POP ICON. The music was all dance oriented, not anything streisand in her mid 40s was interested in. In 1993 it was suggested that they sing a duet - anything you can do i can do better - on streisand's back to broadway album, but it was a national enquire rumour. madonna was never asked. also by 1993 madonna was really in a career slump, her reign was over, Celine, Mariah and Houston were more in the spot like for like 2-3 yrs.
What I love in this video is that every diva has someone to idolize LOL. Watching Madonna in awe of Miss Streisand is like having Xtina or GaGa fangirling over Madonna and Ariana or Demi themselves fangirling over Xtina and GaGa etc.. Plus, back in the day Miss Streisand was once fangirling over Judy Garland aha.
I wonder how many RUclips viewers knew Rosanne was of Jewish descent. Ironic that as a Jew, SHE was the first comedian to be censored and lynched by the anti-Trump fantaticism that took over the media upon his election.

I peed a little bit when Barbra came on. She's like buttuh!!
@@wil48823 me too lol
this is absolutely hysterical, wish SNL had this material today
yeah SNL hasn't been funny in years. Except for Weekend Update
You ain't kiddin!!
More material? They have NO material. Haven't watched the show in 15 years. The "highlights" aren't even funny. I can just imagine how bad the rest of the show must be,
They do!
Mike Myers may have done the absolute best double-take in the history of double-takes when Babs showed up...brilliant.
That's probably because it was genuine. Barbra's cameo was unscripted. She'd just happened to be in the area and pulled one on Mike Myers and subsequently the viewing audience. It was a big story back in the day.
MMT Sr and it was amazing how he stayed in character!
I know, it was and still is hilarious!
Marathonracer No, he knew that she might appear, so it was not a complete surprise.
Loved it! Madonna acted and talked a bit like Val, in The Nanny.
Sharona from Monk also had the same voice and hair.
Eh.. Me being a NYer, she didn't do as well as I'd have hoped... And I'm as big a Madonna fan as they are Streisand fans! lol SHE'S LIKE BUTTUH!!!!! lol
Except this came out in 1992 over a year before The Nanny premiered in the fall of 1993
@Sam Osler, he didn't say Madonna was copying Val from the Nanny. Just that they sounded alike.
And Mike sounds like Joy Behar
one of the best skits ever. I watched this when it happened and fell off my chair when Babs showed up.
This is golden gold. Still. Timeless, absolutely timeless.
Mike Myers doing a double take when Barbara walked out, priceless
My senior center just added a "coffee talk" activity on the Monday morning calendar. I said coffee talk? I'll show you the original coffee talk! 😂
Wonderful performance from these three talents. Who knew Madonna was such a natural doing comedy no less. This never gets old. HILARIOUS!
Next to Evita, this was probably Madonna’s best performance as an actress and LIVE no less, so in character, relaxed, natural, and really funny!
I liked her performance in Evita but not that one speaking part. It felt so unnatural.
The only time I ever found Madonna to be natural at acting was in Who’s That Girl. Now, the character was way over the top but she was supposed to be. Think of her as a Harley Quinn prototype.
Madonna should have worked with that director more often because he was able to get her to be an actress.
she is acting natural here
Too much sucking on her teeth business. She wanted the spotlight and I'm getting attention whore from her. It overshadowed whatever acting she did.
Yeah she's surprisingly good and I'm also a little shocked how bad Barr is though, and I'm even a fan.
give me a break
Keep coming back to this; it's absolutely hilarious! Gets better and better over time too!
I still watch this from time to time! What a damn great surprise!!! So good they kept Streisand's appearance a secret. Wish we had more spontaneous moments like this on TV today.
That was so great that she showed up. Barbara is not only a fantastic singer but she's a great person too. :)
This is some of the best acting Madonna has done. She is relaxed and in character here. Total fab.
Mike Myers was a comic genius.
Lee Sher true that
was?
Lee Sher too bad noone wants to work with him anymore.
@@neilyaremchuk6798 i read that his Austin Powers success went to his head and has made him impossible to work with.
Was? Did he pass away?
One of the top ten SNL skits of all time.
It was unexpected to see Madonna blowing Roseanne out of the water in terms of comedy.
Nothing unexpected, Roseanne is awful
Mike Myers is GOLD. Madonna does some of her best acting in this scene. Myer’s and Madonna’s response to Streisand’s walk on cameo is fabulous. I remember watching
this live back in ‘92 and I never knew until later that Streisand’s appearance was not scheduled. It’s a SNL legendary moment for sure! I miss these SNL moments.
Yeah, this scene highlights how underrated Madonna is as an actress. She was pretty amazing in this.
All Streisand has to do is walk across a stage and she gets a roaring applause and reception. Amazing, talented woman. She's the absolute best!
Like buttah..😊❤
The true and spontaneous reactions brings tears to my eyes regardless of how many times I've watched this. Mike, Madonna, Roseanne, and of coworce Bah-bra. Brilliant.
Mike Myers is so insane! I love him..& don’t you just love their look.. great talent...& very large glasses :)
like butter! Madonna actualy looked star struck when Babs walked on !
pat fry Like butter!
That's because she was!
She was! Barbra actually surprised all of them!
That was classic!
I LMAO @ Madonna trying to keep her wig on while Roseanne shook her in excitement!! :-P :-P
Barbra Streisand is simply a phenomenal woman...love her
Madonna looks like Michelle Pfifer in married to the mob.
I thought it was Shera Danese
So hawt

My 999th time viewing this skit & I never tire of it. Talk amongst yourselves. I love it!
Mike Meyers has crazy talent. The award for coolest cameo... Barbara Streisand
mikes face when he sees Babs is hilarious
I read somewhere that they didn't even know she was there. So they were genuinely surprised.
***** Barbra was having dinner nearby and heard they were doing the sketch that night and decided to just do a last minute walk on. Their reactions are real. None of them knew she was going to walk on at the end. Lorne Michaels probably knew but no one else.
Correct. Lorne Michaels knew, his assistant knew, maybe one or two others, but nobody talked. She was literally last minute.
@@cainster I hope she includes this story in her book
I love this skit. I think this character should have gotten at least a movie or a sitcom.
The New Yawk accent!!!, I love it
Its fucking annoying
@@mecaillagladue2587 you think I don’t know people who talk like that? I talk like that! Just less extreme
I saw it the night it aired, sitting in my apt alone and screaming out loud when Barbra walked on the stage.
Madonna was the most profession cast member during this scene
Totally fabulous. Madonna was a SCREAM! Who knew she was so funny!
I love how Mike Myers and Madonna react when Babs comes in. "We are not worthy1 We are not worthy!" ;-D
This is gold, Jerry, I tell ya, GOLD!,😂
To think I was in my late teens when I watched this LIVE- and now some 25 years later that's EXACTLY how my Mom is now and I am with her!
30 years now
I loved this when it originally aired. Roseanne was the host, so even Madonna doing this sketch was a surprise, because she was not billed, and did nothing else on the show that night. And of course, Barbra's totally unexpected appearance is just amazing.
As an Italian from Brooklyn I love them!! My family is exactly like them
I saw this when it originally aired and I was just as shocked when Miss Streisand came on. This is one of my favorite SNL skits.
For those who say Madonna can't act, watch this. She's hilarious in this.
She was great in "A League of Their Own" too. 😊💟
@twilliger123 She was good for her, let's say, in my opinion.
She has her moments but can't direct for shit
@Isla Robinson Evita was FABULOUS. 💐
She was terrible in ALOTO and all her other movies but this SNL skit was good
Did one catch Madonnas character name Liz Rosenberg was her publicist name at the time?!!! 😊
LMAO!!!! was most DEFINITELY like watching an episode of "The Nanny"! Absolutely perfect when Barbra strolled on to the set!
Can we please bring back Linda Richman back!!! We're all verklempt without her!!!!!
Christopher Zavala PLEASE!
Mike Meyers needs to be dragged out of hiding from the failure of The Love Guru.
Mike Myers would never come back to the dumpster fire snl is now
It probably won’t happen, because the media refuses to highlight Jews in any positive light whatsoever.
if that were the case why did he show up on SNL40?
This is still a classic, up there with Steve Martin's King Tut and Father Guido's "Find the Pope in the Pizza" sketch.
"THATS ALL THE TIME WE HAVE, I HAVE TO GO AND DIE NOW" - Mike Myers after seeing Barba Streisand haha
HAHA you're right! A mix of Val and Sylvia. Roseanne is Yetta
I really love Madonna in this classic clip. And I never tire of Barbra walking on in that floppy dark hat and sunglasses. Just perfect💝💝💝 And all the hand gestures and the great buffant hair and fluffy blonde wig are hysterical!!
A legitimate reaction to seeing Barbra Streisand in real life.
Melissa Ngai That’s EXACTLY what my Jewish mother/aunts/sisters would say. “I got a Cadillac; now I can die.”
I grew up in Miami. I've met these women at least a thousand times. Nothing like seeing the snowbirds wearing their mink coats on a 75 degree night weighted down with every piece of jewelry they own.
snowbirds are canadians.
The term "snowbirds", refers to anybody flying south for the winter. I've lived in NYC all my life and heard references to the "snowbirds" going to Florida for the winter. You don't know wtf you're talking about.
@@Marathonracer - in Northern California - Sonora to be exact, I heard the little rich girls going snow skiing were called snow bunnies.
. You're right. I'm from S. FL and "snowbirds" are the people that winter here, doesn't matter where they're from.
Mike Myers at 7:20 his reaction is the best.
Side note: he should have guest starred on The Nanny as this character, lol
This is what they mean by Golden Moments of TV! All of them were wonderful ❤️.Barbra was perfectly timed as usual, despite unscheduled stop. This skit ALWAYS gets me to a good place. Thanks for it
Madonna is brilliant in this.
@@DaveTexas
And inFunny Girl she definitely played a funny girl lol
@DaveTexas Oh my God, I love who's that girl! It reminds me of my childhood. It was 6 when that movie came out but that soundtrack was my 1st cassettes!
Great inside joke: Madonna's publicist at the time was named Liz Rosenberg.
No she wasn’t.
Yes, she was.

Bar? With that accent?
One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches!!!
That’s part of the magic of this show. Absolutely anybody can show up at any given time.
One of my fav SNL skits, I still quote 'like butta' all the time lol
To think Madonna declined Barbra's invite many years prior into having a duet with her. Then this! Madonna is starstruck and shows Babs lots of respect!
Day Villaruel I red up on that it was actually her label at the time that turned it down she wanted to but they said no
NEVER HAPPENED.
@cyber Madonna does whatever she wants......
that never happened. this episode was in 1992. streisand sang pop from 1972 until 1984, when she announced she was 'returning to her roots' and just singing broadway and traditional.
Neverending Saga ur obviously a troll. i dont do trolls! next!
Madonna is so beautiful. This is a memorable one! Mike Meyers is awesome as usual.

Mike Myers is a comedic genius. And Madonna really stepped. Aside from Evita an A League of Their Own, this was her best performance- and live no less
Mike Meyers got his jewish mother act from his real life jewish mother in law !
He LOOKS like actress,RUTH ROMAN,LOL.
I wonder how many RUclips viewers knew Rosanne was of Jewish descent. Ironic that as a Jew, SHE was the first comedian to be censored and lynched by the anti-Trump fantaticism that took over the media upon his election.
@@MontoyaMatrix She also is one of the few Hollywood Jews who shows pride in the great nation of Israel.
@@bamabelle7075 And, oddly, only the Democrats, at the moment, are celebrating actual censorship. 1984 should not become The Brave New World. Not if I, myself, have something to say about it.
