Yeah, that's the beauty of this sketch, and maybe others from this series. Lesser writers/actors might have made fun of the contestants, but somehow we're laughing with them instead of at them. They're so adorable, but it's the poor host we laugh at because he doesn't know how to handle this situation. Such is life, sometimes.

EDIT: Evidently a lot of people replying to my comment are having diaper rash because I stated “underrated”. Like every other comment on social media, there’s always HALF WITS who have to take exception, thus I’ll clarify my statement for those cry babies:
Compared to Candy (SCTV) and Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and a long list of others from SNL, Eugene Levy, though just as funny if not funnier, didn’t enjoy the same level of fame.

Yep, low budget sets and they didn't need high-priced CGI to showcase their acting skills. Now days, CGI and low-brow acting is the new thing in Hollywood. CGI is showcased in many movies with lousy actors.

I saw it all when it was new. Spent my formative years with those incredible talents on my TV screen. Grew up in the wilds near Toronto, but eventually got to see some of their stage revues at the venerable Old Firehall, basically a dinner theatre, and saw all these original cast members on stage. Plus others whose work was equally brilliant -- Peter Aykroyd, Robin Duke, Tony Rosato. And Levy as Trebek ("Alex Trebel") is spot-on in presenting Trebek's frustration with some of his dozy & ditzy high school contestants on "Reach For the Top," a classically stodgy Canadian idea of a game show from the 1960s and 70s. I used to marvel at the brilliance of some, and the stupidity of others. SCTV's team nailed it!

Eugene Levy was hilarious as the short-tempered parody of Alex Trebek, especially when he blows up having to deal with idiotic contestants.

I think his slow burn and naive openers is Amazing . Opening the Segment like the previous disasters never happened is ironically funny
