It's a shame how little people pay attention to the subtleties of great performers, as evidenced by the many comments here. The camera catches Bette reflexively blowing out an entire 2 lungs worth of smoke the moment he started in with his impression of her. Had she been drinking, it would have been a spit take. Just because the lady was reserved does not mean she was annoyed.

I think Davis knew exactly what she was doing and reclaimed the spotlight in that moment perfectly. She knew his impression of her was spot-on, but I suspect she was also a little irked that Martin and Carson had been largely ignoring her and she was left sitting in the sidelines. It was her crafty way of reminding people who the top dog was.

Martin’s such a gentleman. He didn’t embarrass her by saying he already imitated her. She probably knew he had already imitated her and was doing a classic Bette dis. She was always sharp. When he imitated her again at her request and she wouldn’t acknowledge it, that’s more shade from Bette. He was, again, a gentleman about it. If it was her little joke on him, he let her have it. If she honestly didn’t recognize his imitation, then he’d look like a such a jerk telling her. He chose to be respectful and kind either way. That’s how Martin has always been. Maybe it’s because he’s Canadian or it’s innate. I’m not sure the audience recognized the brutal burn she dealt out twice.

@@Kathy-pr4wu Breast cancer...so what? You think it some kind of badge of horrible suffering? Something that gives her immunity from being a nasty person? Or excuses nasty behaviour on television? Not really. Often fatal true but not the kind of real suffering one can endure. And.... I've had cancer as well.....TWICE and as for age....gotcha there too as I will be 65 in a couple months. Just because someone gets cancer or any other disease does not make them perfect people or excuse their faults....such as no sense of humor and arrogance and nastiness. The trouble was on the Carson show that she was no longer the center of attention when the comic went on...that was the 1st issue for her and when she obviously could not be self deprecating...ESPECIALLY when imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and even was stated so in the show, she just couldn't help herself from being mean. Oh but she had breast cancer. I suppose she should have been allowed to drive a bus load of children off of a bridge because, you know, breast cancer. Having breast cancer does not excuse her from not being a decent person to someone who is actually complimenting her with his imitation. Oh, but I expect my thoughts don't count either because neither of my cancers were breast cancer. Have I said breast cancer enough? Because it's all you seem to think about.....seems to have magical qualities to you.
