  • MotoMan heads to New York for the premiere of the all-new 2023 Nissan Z! Once there, he sits down with old friend and Chief of Nissan Design, Alfonso Albaisa to discuss the details of the 2023 Nissan Z we didn’t know when we first saw the Nissan Z Proto last year, as well discuss two of the most important aspects of the 2023 Nissan Z: Pricing and will T Tops finally make a return? Belt in, because Brother Alfonso is surprisingly direct with his answers on both fronts.

    Omg Alfonso I can’t believe you know the presenter well and are being interviewed here. I just wanted to say one thing to you. On the night the new Z was presented, I like many did not get the rectangular front grill and after sleeping on it that night (Australia) I woke up the next day and remember the car that may have inspired this design. There was this build called the ‘spirit Z’ a white flared 240z. It was an amazing race 240z. I am so happy that you and your team managed to incorporate this feature into the new Z. This car oozes tradition and vintage beyond what anyone could have imagined. Thank you.

      @@M1911jln I don’t think it will be the death of the Supra, but I think Toyota dealers are going to have to discount the crap out of both the 4 and 6 cylinder models to compete with the new Z.

    • @M1911jln
      @M1911jln 3 года назад +26

      @@buckyoung77 I feel very negatively about the Supra, but it isn't all about the transmission. I think the Supra is hideous. Visibility out of the Supra is terrible. It has a zillion fake vents all over the place (and I don't buy for a minute Toyota's claim that the fake vents are there for tuners).
      If I was going to buy a sports car, I would want a manual, but I realize that manuals have a low take rate, even on sports cars. I don't have room in the driveway for another sports car, so I'm not in the market for one.
      The bigger issue to me is that the Supra simply isn't a Toyota product. It was designed by BMW and is built by Magna Steyr in Austria using BMW parts. Open the hood, look closely at the parts, and you will see they are all stamped BMW. Toyota's claim that they engineered the Supra separately from BMW is simply a lie. I really hate that Toyota is lying to us about their involvement in the design of the Supra. Toyota designed the body (badly) and did some chassis tuning (basically spring and damper rates). But the rest is all BMW. If I want a BMW Z4, then I will go to the BMW dealer and buy one.
      I'm a Toyota guy. I've owned Toyotas for over 20 years and I'm driving my 3rd Toyota now. One of the reasons that I buy Toyotas is that I know they will be very reliable and last a long time. They won't be as cutting edge as other makes, but they will be reliable. The Supra, however, will have BMW reliability (which hasn't been great), not Toyota reliability.
      I realize that most buyers won't have the same grudge against the Supra that I do. However, I think the more typical sports car buyer will choose the more attractive and cheaper Z-car with the 6-cylinder engine over the uglier and more expensive 4-cylinder Supra.

  • @sonydominates
    @sonydominates 3 года назад +7

    Wow! Unexpected, but awesome interview! I think it's awesome that Alfonso took into consideration the heritage and input from fans. I think he really nailed the rear, roof line, and hood, and I think people appreciate it's kind of an homage to almost every single Z in history with elements taken from each generation. I also want to compliment the unique transition of the A pillar base to the hood. These days with how bumpers are cut, black or carbon hoods can look awkward, but he did a really good job in making the lines clean for the hood, especially the possibility of a continuous unbroken two tone from the hood to the roof.
    My only gripe is the line from the outer end of the headlight to the top corners of the grille. It is line flow, but I think it's awkward how a rounded line curves upward and abruptly ends on a rectangular angular grille. Doesn't look coherent to me.
    I do get what was attempted with the headlight area being an homage to the original 240Z, but I think with the line coming from the hood being pretty straight and the line coming from the outer headlight being very round, when it joins the hood line, it doesn't look matched. I like the hood line, so I think the better direction would be to decrease the roundness and upward angle into the grille corners.
    A possible solution includes decreasing the roundness and angle of the upward curving line. I would personally like for the line to fade into the grille, not go upwards at all, or even be eliminated, but with the homage aspect, I can see that not being a choice. So the best solution for this line might be to greatly reduce the roundness and angle, and raise the line so that the curvature matches the line from the hood while still retaining the general homage shape to the 240Z headlights.
    That was a lot of words for just one line haha. Despite my lengthy ramble, I think it's an excellent design overall!!
    Thanks MotoMan and Alfonso for this interview!! Can't wait to see it in person!!

Both 2015 and 2017 are much better in stop and go traffic but still you get the odd 2nd to 1st hesitation when you go really slow about 5kmh and some of the usual cluncks. 09 was way more clunky and jerky at slow speed especially 1st to 2nd shift was like dropping the hammer on the clutch. For 2017 1st to 2nd is seamless and it's on 2nd at about 6kmh in auto.

    That was a fun interview and I liked the format. I hope that all the cross comparisons to Supra quiet down after the car launches and people start to enjoy the Z for its design, performance and heritage. No footnotes or comparison grids required; aren't cars supposed to be about how they make us feel? I was a fan of 280zx and 300zx and this car calls me back to those days and that feeling. Well done Nissan, I think you've got a hit on your hands.

One thing I'd love to see come back is what I remember very fondly from my '83 280ZX. That was the Japanese ladies voice saying all of my warnings/updates. To answer Mr. Albaisa’s question, the exterior design makes me feel like I want to keep looking at the car, like I want to learn more from the designer why this design works. I tend to like flowing lines over sharp angles, but here they work together exceptionally well, in my opinion, meaning they don’t clash. It’s lovely and it has an edginess at the same time. For me, those things don’t usually mesh, but here it works.

    The car is beautiful in a timeless way. You nailed it an have nothing to worry about. I love that there are no fake vents or try hard "performance" styling just beautiful, clean lines like the original.
    Just keep the bean counters and product tier differentiators/marketing away and keep the base model at the promise 400 hp an under 40k an you have a phenomenon on your hands.
    Some things I'd personally like to see in not particular order from mild to billionaire space rocket pipe dreams:
    1. A bigger turbo, less torque, more hp, peakier , higher reving?(if possible) version (Nismo? I probably cant afford it then :-( ). I miss the high rpm 90's Japanese cars that really made you row through the gears to extract maximum performance.
    2. Factory power fender mirrors option.
    3. Optional fairlady badging in the US.
    4. G-nose option? I've seen some sweet renders....
    5. Factory retro rear sunshade accessory.
    6. Paint matched roof available on all colors (I like white but heard it will only come with the black roof, but I like the colored roof because it looks even more retro.)
    7. Limited slip option on the base.
    Question: Why the heck does the base get an 8 inch infotainment an the performance a 9 inch? What does that save a whole 6 dollars? Keep the marketing product tier differentiation guys away!

    Two thoughts on the rectangular grille. 1. It will not look so bad when people shove aftermarket intercoolers in there. 2. In my opinion it is only off putting from a directly forward view where you can't see the varying depths of the bumper; a little shape to it or reducing the height of it would have been an improvement. Adding the grey color for the production model was a nice bandaid but it would have been better to close the opening a little bit.

    Brother Alfonso, this machine is without doubt a standing ovation of an accomplishment in a sea of would-bes and if-onlys, triumphed only by the sheer fact that it sits in a spectrum of affordability that readily seems bloated by other manufacturers. I am thoroughly in awe and would dare to envision owning one outright even when such a thought still seems illusive. I hope the Z, and the refreshing rebranding manufacture-wide will be the adrenaline shot that pulls Nissan right back into its powerhouse productivity of years gone, but beyond that, it is truly exciting to see, as always, a Z that provides far and above so much car for the money.
