As a former Z32 owner, I absolutely loved how all or most of the controls were writhing finger reach of the steering wheel. Promoting keeping you attention on driving and enjoying the drive. I’d really like to see that kind of quality and thought of function in the new zed. That, the automatic transmission and the fact that it just didn’t feel like a Z, were the reasons I didn’t purchase a 350 or 370.... I like the overall design of this new one. I hope Nissan’s able to hit it out of the park again. Oh, and all wheel drive would be killer!
A stick shift in 2021 for a guy born in 1980 I must say I'm genuinely happy to soon park a Z Proto next to my 1995 240sx 5-Speed. Manual cars are just fan to drive regardless of stats and breaking records. You can down right lose a race but always find ways to tweak your driving by using a manual.
@Nissan370Z Glass 91 240sx is a beauty. My cousin had one in 1994 a 93' model and sold it in 99 cause he had a child. Today he still regrets ever selling it. I waited for a Silvia way too long and I just want a fresh new design so yeah NISSAN got a winner. Nice Line-up btw
Thank you MotoMan for the well informed and passionate review. As an ‘84 Anniversary Edition owner, I can only agree that T-tops are a dream. And...as an ‘84 Anniversary Edition owner, I can only disagree about the analog tach. I love the three analog gauge cluster, but I want (please Alfonso) a fully digital interior, or at least on option for one. Finally, the customization you speak of is HUGE! This should carry over into a customizable digital gauge cluster. Perhaps one that I can make look like, I don’t know, an ‘84 Anniversary Edition Z, or maybe that’s just me.
Another outstanding episode. I have a soft spot also. I owned a 1981 Nissan 280. I loved that car. It was bulletproof. I certainly hope they take your suggestions. Love to see a version of the tunneled gages again. Thank you so much for this video. It gave a trip down memory lane.
This car is shaping to be something special ! Is gona be the first sports car I want to buy and put in front of a house. Like I can literally see it. But you dont know what's gona happen nowadays. Cant wait to see the review on this and in real life.
Yes please T TOPS! I dont need complicated. Manual trans, a nice compromise between handling and compliance when it comes to suspension geometry, android auto integration and a limited slip differential. Oh and T TOPS... did I mention T TOPS? I'm most certain a majority of this car will be parts bin. So I can't forsee it being over 50. If they price it right in that 40 for base to say 46 fully loaded this will sell and sell big.
Love love love this car please please please don't listen to all the people talking about how they don't like the squared off front facia. That is absolutely the best part of the whole car. Number one it just looks amazing which I get it is subjective. However what's not subjective is that with such a wide open area in the front like that it is absolutely an aftermarket tuners dream. After all the reason we are still talking about Z cars today is because of their popularity within the aftermarket community. Making something with a huge open front mouth will allow for those huge front mount intercoolers that will allow tons of cooling and tons of power. I could not be more in love with the look of this car you guys knocked it out of the park. I was never a fan of the 370 line, the round bubble shapes have never really been my thing. But the clean yet aggressive lines of this car with all the nods to past Z cars has really come together into something awe inspiring. I'll be saving my pennies and hoping that this car is exactly what you go with for production.
I love it! Great job on the design! Can't wait to see what the specs on the engine will be. If Alfonso does really get some feedback from you: two thumbs up! Also, build the electric IMs please!!! Name it Maxima and let that name live up to the 4DSC moniker! (Make it a hatch too!)
Another great video with some amazing background info and I agree with your points 100%. I absolutely LOVE this Z Proto. For our second car we were thinking about the Z because it was one of the few new cars offered in a manual but we really needed a back seat. We ended up with a Honda Civic Type R and LOVE it! For a third car, the Z is on the list but I have to be honest, the current 370 Z NISMO is a really good car with a manual. I could not agree with you more about the pricing because when you start thinking about a car in the $50,000 to $60,000 range you automatically start to think of the C8. IMHO what would have helped to set the Supra apart from the C8 in driving experience would have been a good three pedal, 6 speed manual but here we have the new Z getting a 6 speed manual right out the gate. Give Americans a compelling reason to learn to drive a manual and they will learn. A brand new Z built from the ground up with a 6 speed manual is a very compelling reason to learn. Keep up the great work! BTW I can't stress this enough but I am SO grateful Nissan did not try to force that "V motion grill" design on the front end of this Z. THANK YOU Nissan! If Ford can let the Mustang be the Mustang and the Bronco be the Bronco Nissan can let the Z be the Z.
35-40 would be in spitting distance of the mustang, which would be its real competitor in the states. Id say shoot for that. My wishlist is keep the weight around or under 3500lbs and be under 40 starting. Thatd be a killer combo with everything else it has to offer
It's interesting because the segment needs more competition. On the manual, in the right formula the takeup could be higher. A lot of enthusiasts don't have 911 money. Consider that the M2 manual takeup was actually around 50%.
Thank God for your enthusiasm about the T Top. I pray they listen. Its been to long, honestly I would love to see a new car dedicated to a remake of the Z32 but if this is as close as it gets I cant complain.
The show was great, love the history lesson as well as the designer info.as for the design of the Z, the picturesdid not do it justice and I am glad that you took footage of the headlights the way that you did because it shows the way that Nissan captured the 240's. Overall I am glad that the long awaited king of Japanese auto sports (in my opinion) is back. I love the angle that you captured the what all of us wanted to know from the wheelbase to a possible engine layout. Design, first glad that its bigger, as a taller guy I'm one for leg room. I love the multiple model era that it brings together, my favorite part is the rear 3 quarter, how the hips stand out and the taillights tilt towards the hips.
Wow. Thanks for all the information and viewing of the Nissan Z Proto. I currently own the Z370. One of the things I really wanted was a T-top, which isn't being made. I was also concerned as to why there was all the wasted space on the dash for an extra storage when it could have be use to put a navigation system. Also, please make sure that the entertainment system has the option to subscribe to Sirius radio. I had to have my new system removed and purchase a new system just to have Sirius radio. Can't wat for it to hit the market. I'm wanting it....
Look to AMS performance for what the engine will be. They are partnered with infiniti and doing a lot of aftermarket work on the red sport. Basically looks like ams is being paid for R&D that will implement into the future
That's right its incomplete without the T-Tops that's icing on the cake i remember the 89 model 300zx with the T-Tops and pop up head lights nissan was jazzy back then.
Your so right about the the third rail. Looks a little F-Type...not a bad thing. I've been holding out for quite some time on a sports car purchase...I'm intrigued!
I’m truly excited for this car. After having a few German sports cars, I’ll be heading back to the Japanese side soon & this pick is one of the possibilities. The dimensions are identical to the 718 Cayman.
Z has always been an enthusiast car and really launched nissan/infiniti at sport category in early 2000. Keep it simple, self-serviceable, and cut back on electronics that eventually cost a fortune to replace. I'd also be mindful of the oil cooling, avoiding plastic engine parts that fail as they age, and using thicker oil paint/rust proofing.
YES, T-Tops PLEASE And I'll buy one for sure. I've never bought a new car before and I'm seriously considering buying one with this new Z. Yes keep the price $45-40K or below.
They said the silver trim that runs along window is inspired by/represents a katana. Would’ve elevated that design element much further had they put a temper line and ridge line on that trim piece. Just a thought.
I've owned my slicktop 94 Z32 since new. And there aren't many cars I've driven that have you feel like you're in an F-16. I hope the feel of the new Z captures this driver centric experience
Moto an one more thing they should do from a previous 240 and fx owner. Give it a unique sound and a controllable valved exhaust. First Gen fx and G35 sounded so unique, they need a good aggressive sound with this car. Otherwise I agree with all of your suggestions
Yes to T tops!!! I owned 2 Z31's with T tops and it is such a cool feature. Like having a convertible without the soft top that can be destroyed by 1 knife hole.
Sounds like you let RUclips make your opinion. The NSX is a hell of a car and already doubled in value since the YT community...who didn’t drive it...tore it apart. The only issue is that the interior doesn’t feel as premium as the exotics.
Great video! I've always loved the 240Z and would have wanted one if it wasn't for the rust issue. That being said, what cars in that era weren't rust prone? This Z Proto would be a dream car come true and would be the first Nissan I would want to own given everything the MotoMan said and I agree with everything on his wish list! Please, oh Please, make it so!!!!
Overpricing is what doomed the Japanese supercars in the 90’s. When prices for Supras and 3000GTs started edging into Porsche 911 and Corvette territory it was all over. As stoked as I am to see a neo-retro styled Z car, if it makes less HP than a 5 liter Mustang, at the same price point, they won’t sell. This is why Dodge continues to sell a ton of Challenger R/Ts.
For all of you complaining about 2022 being to far out for production, consider this. The current 370z has stopped production for 2020. If this Z were to come out, I would guess Spring of 2021 so it could be called a 2022 model. Personally I wouldn’t that time frame, however the sooner the better so I can purchase my 4th Z car. Thank you Nissan great car and great design.
Nissan is making a great improvement of the interior and is keeping the retro style which i like. I would love to see a targa option or t top option, and a 2+2 option which gave Nissan a competitive edge in the market. A digital cluster is also a good upgrade and it gives a more modern look to the interior.
I have a backup set of SSR GTX-01 wheels (black) from when I had my 370z. Saving those wheels for the new Z as I sold my 370! Can't wait for this car. First thing I'm doing is fully straight-piping it :D
Love the car! As a former 370Z owner, I'm interested to see the final production version. Styling wise, I wish the nose was just a bit longer (and thus lower) better emulating the G-Nose. Maybe the NISMO version can do this. Like John Morton, I'm not a fan of the tail. Oh yeah, give us a nice ducktail spoiler option too; not a wing.
I was the kid that always sketched in class . . . but had NO concept there were schools for design. If I did, would have gone that route. Now, I just call myself a frustrated designer that hangs out with real designers:)
Thanks for getting the multiple angles of this car, most importantly the headlights and the explanation of them because I've heard so much nonsense about them. (They look great!) I really hope for it to look just like this once it hits the market. By the way, I agree that the most likely engine will be the red sport ttv6 for starters and I'm hoping that the nismo brings 450 to 500hp or more.
Hey Motoman, is the gas pedal hinged at the top like Zs of old, or does it have an organ pedal type gas pedal? It might seem like an odd ask but would be the difference between buying or not for me!
It looks ok. I mean, if we are going for nostalgia, i like the original 240 and just for nostalgias sake, I’d love to see a canted inline 6 in that car. I’m biased because my father still owns one. yet, I’m happy that Nissan did this in house and hopeful that the production car will also be in house.
Does that mean Ferraris are not real sports cars anymore since they don’t offer a manual? Same with Lambos? Awesome review. Thanks for the history. That really helps getting on board with the design, which I didn’t care for when I first saw it. To me, the rear reminds me of the modern 911s.
The SUPRA has an Exotic car look SUPRA has more Road presence than a BMW M3 OR C63 whereas this 400 Z looks like a toy it's exterior is good but looks cheap
Ooh yeah. It's high time we got a new RX series. Preferably one that isn't rubbish. A modern take on one of the earlier RX cars, with a rotary/hybrid drivetrain (done like a hypercar style, i.e. for ultimate power, not another boring EV) . That'd be cool. RX4 would probably be my choice, but any of them except the RX5 would be cool. Cosmo, Capella, RX2, RX3, RX4, even the series 1 RX7. They're all pretty cool little cars. I know there's that RX concept thing that's supposedly being developed with the rotary engine as a "range extender" (lame), but a proper tribute to the earlier RX cars would be a lot cooler imho. They're supposed to be sports cars for Pete's sake, not electric shopping trolleys. Oh, and they'll have to ditch that godawful hideous grill design that Mazda seems to love so much on their cars these days. It's becoming almost as much of a laughing stock as the BMW "kidneys". Ugh.
I love the way it looks!!! And I agree totally about the price, it will not do good if the price is too high. Love that you can get a manual transmission!
Fantastic review! Nissan is going to lead the market by having an in house design, twin turbo engine, and a manual transmission. I would have preferred a modernized Z32, as the 240Z doesn't mean much for anyone < 60. But, I can't argue with this design, as it looks pretty good. Good luck finding a stock Z32 in good condition these days.
Good point about the over/under on 60. Sadly, that is happening with many other cars - which is impacting collector car values in those markets. Dave Kinney and I will be doing an episode in the future on this very subject.
Twin Turbos ✔ Manual transmission ✔ Engine V6 @ 400BHP ✔ T-Top or Targa? Rear windshield wiper? Fog Lights? Hopefully the production models have these options.

Still a long and slow recovery, but good to be back working again . . . Thank you for your kind words - means a lot!
Well the rectangle grill is growing on me ....
Literally said the same thing. It's not looking as ugly as before
I still can't get over it.
On what part of your body? You should see a doctor! 😱
That rectangle is cyberpunk as fuck
That retro modern rear end looks awesome 👍
This channel is underrated.
Another outstanding episode. I have a soft spot also. I owned a 1981 Nissan 280. I loved that car. It was bulletproof. I certainly hope they take your suggestions. Love to see a version of the tunneled gages again. Thank you so much for this video. It gave a trip down memory lane.
Thanks . . . genuinely enjoyed putting it together.
I love the design. I want one!
Always so much wonderful details about the vehicle! I hope Nissan builds this car
Awesome review 👍 awesome car...I hope S2000 comes back too
Wow im so glad I found this channel. So different from the others, so instructive. I love it. You got a new subscriber sir
35-40 would be in spitting distance of the mustang, which would be its real competitor in the states. Id say shoot for that.
My wishlist is keep the weight around or under 3500lbs and be under 40 starting. Thatd be a killer combo with everything else it has to offer
36k base price.
It would be amazing if they had a base version with no turbos along with it. Even at 300 hp it would be sooo fun
It's interesting because the segment needs more competition. On the manual, in the right formula the takeup could be higher. A lot of enthusiasts don't have 911 money. Consider that the M2 manual takeup was actually around 50%.
Thanks for this video! I really hope this is successful for Nissan, I feel like they lost their way lately.
Nice to see they finally gave the interior some love that is where the z always lacked
I have a 91 300zxtt slightly modified. 145k miles I love the car, but I think I would let it go to help get one of these. Beautiful!
Thank God for your enthusiasm about the T Top. I pray they listen. Its been to long, honestly I would love to see a new car dedicated to a remake of the Z32 but if this is as close as it gets I cant complain.
This is the best new Nissan in 20 years in terms of design. (It will look very simular to this in production.) This is what I like to see Alfonso!
There is a company that makes z32 led tail lights and these look exactly like their version, shortened.
Thanks for the detailed feedback, Chris!
@@MotoManTV no problem!
Definitely need a T top option, I had a 89 and enjoyed the summers with it. Tinted glass T Tops with a manual trans would be my option
Phenomenal review, moto!!!! Thank you...
This makes me miss my old 260z and 350z. I guess I'll have to get a 400z to fill the void :)
I'm on board with TTops. I have a z32 TT and almost never have the tops on.
I hate winter so I take every opportunity to enjoy warm weather
LOVED the sound of the G35.
Bro thank God you mentioned T tops! I wish they were available on my 350Z
Yes to T tops!!! I owned 2 Z31's with T tops and it is such a cool feature. Like having a convertible without the soft top that can be destroyed by 1 knife hole.
The Supra is a let down, just like the NSX.
drive the nsx. the interior feels dated already but its a pleasure to drive
Sounds like you let RUclips make your opinion. The NSX is a hell of a car and already doubled in value since the YT community...who didn’t drive it...tore it apart. The only issue is that the interior doesn’t feel as premium as the exotics.
@@cartergarnon6299 What are you on about? The NSX doubled its' value? Are we talking about the same NSX here, or even about the same Supra?
@@elliscoleman1727 i think its kinda dull looking though
Imagine its the new Celica and its all good . Just some prankster put a Supra badge on it while you sleeping . No big deal
I want this car. They should show off the different looks of each trim packages and a tease of a Nismo version would be awesome.
Outstanding review. Thank you 🤘🏼
This car is going to look way better in person and it'll age well once it comes out. I dig it.
Supra was never a supercar though, it was a GT in the price range of some killers.haha
They should do a 39,995 starting price
Great video. Thanks for sharing such knowledge. Trying to decide on the C8 or the Z. T-tops are great, but a convertible would be awesome.
No fake vents and comes in Manual. That's a good start. I'm glad I didn't jump the Zupra bandwagon when every youtuber was on it.
Nissan is making a great improvement of the interior and is keeping the retro style which i like. I would love to see a targa option or t top option, and a 2+2 option which gave Nissan a competitive edge in the market. A digital cluster is also a good upgrade and it gives a more modern look to the interior.
I'm getting with the manual!
Agree about a tach. Mazda actually nailed that with the RX-8. Giant analog tach right in the middle with embedded digital Speedo.
I have a backup set of SSR GTX-01 wheels (black) from when I had my 370z. Saving those wheels for the new Z as I sold my 370! Can't wait for this car. First thing I'm doing is fully straight-piping it :D
Also you are wrong. There are A LOT of fans who are gonna get it in manual trans.
Like your design talk. Spot on! Were you a car designer in the previous life?
I've heard twin turbo v6 300 hp? Not for 36000.00 seems a bit short in dollar amount???
Agreed on pricing. Plz keep it under 45k
Honda are you listening?
It looks ok. I mean, if we are going for nostalgia, i like the original 240 and just for nostalgias sake, I’d love to see a canted inline 6 in that car. I’m biased because my father still owns one. yet, I’m happy that Nissan did this in house and hopeful that the production car will also be in house.
I love its clean lines and artifact-free design. Most cars of its class are overstyled
Does that mean Ferraris are not real sports cars anymore since they don’t offer a manual? Same with Lambos? Awesome review. Thanks for the history. That really helps getting on board with the design, which I didn’t care for when I first saw it. To me, the rear reminds me of the modern 911s.
"Can we have this that and that" - How about they don't change anything and get this thing on the road asap?
This looks so much better than the Supra
Facts. The Supra is way too overstyled. Less is so much more here.
The SUPRA has an Exotic car look SUPRA has more Road presence than a BMW M3 OR C63 whereas this 400 Z looks like a toy it's exterior is good but looks cheap
Mazda, are you watching?
Coleman is coming to the hangar to shoot a segment on Wednesday night. He will be forced to watch this.
@@MotoManTV I wanna see that inline 6 already 👀 something new
Ugh.
Why the front brakes are mounted in the front of the rotor
Is it 4WD or AWD or is it just the concept car ?!!!!
Im gonna go ahead and call this but the new z is gonna have two motors (vr30-300hp and vr30 400Hp). The 400hp going into the nismo variant
I love the way it looks!!! And I agree totally about the price, it will not do good if the price is too high. Love that you can get a manual transmission!
I cant seem to find a review on a 400z with its hood popped open... I want to see the engine...
You won't. Strictly off limits . . . for now.
A t-top would be awesome and save development costs over a roadster
When I see the rear i think Testarosa...and i love it.
