Incredible Onboard: Porsche 904 hunts Elan and Cobra at Goodwood

  • Ride onboard with Olly Bryant as he hunts down a plucky Lotus Elan and the fanged AC Cobra in the Graham Hill Trophy. You would have thought the Cobra would leave the Elan and 904 in the dust, but as you can see, Goodwood can be an ally to the better-handling cars.

    That was a really neat move to pass the two of them through Lavant and also a carefully measured approach to lapping the Carrera 6 shortly after, making sure to pass him smoothly between the exit of Woodcote and the chicane. Nice driving of a great-sounding car.

      I'd also noticed the measured upshifts, certainly looking after car.

    Like the left foot dabs on the brake to take up pad knock back. Great drive it was (as always).

      piloting a multi-million dollar Porsche one had best to be sure there are brakes there before needing them...... all Racers do this, even lowly Porsches during driver education runs. (at least I and my friends do in our 911s, 944s, and 951s) This fellow Olly knows how to turn a spirited drive into a winning combination of handling, braking, and throttle control. All in a paper thin plastic Porsche that any owner of the Marque would give several appendages and an organ or two to own

      @@hobocatlawrence Yes! Olly Is a brilliant driver.. If it's got wheels he'll drive them off it. I think most period and modern race cars need this. However there's plenty that don't do that (none professional drivers), or toe and heel down the box. Regarding value? I wouldn't value any car as much as some might think I ought to. If they are that valuable then a clone will probably used with a transferable chassis plate. Most of them will be referred to as a "Triggers Broom".

    The 904 is my Favourite Porsche Road Car and The 908-3 is a Beautiful Can-Am Racing Car. Fantastic Driving love to onboard.👍

    Saw the Levant overtake on the Cobra and Elan from the Elan's cockpit in the "Elan's fastest lap" vid. That was a mighty slick piece of wheel/footwork, from three abreast out of St Mary's to an inside route that put them in the mirror. I also got an education on your footwork from the comments, great post in all aspects.

    I'm a huge fan of the 904. Probably why I like my 987 Cayman so much.
    This one sounds like it might be a 904/6 cylinder

    forgive my ignorance but are the steering boxes really slow? Because if I turn the wheel that much on my '80 Fiesta I'm going throug a tight chicane

      Different rate because no power Steering.

    The driver should lock his visor down when in competition. In a big crash there could be a lot of dirt and debris flying about and there is also the chance of fire.

    Enjoyed being in the car for the ride. I would like to know if it's a 4 or 6 or 8 cylinder engine in this Porsche. I would also like to know what was wrong with that Cobra. An ill prepared racing Ford 289 should produce TWICE the horsepower of that Elan and Porsche and the Cobra is heavier by about 650 pounds than the Porsche. On the straights that Cobra should drive around both those cars and be 3 car lengths ahead before the curve.

      addon...4 cars were made with a 6 cylinder 210 hp engine and only 2 later with 8 cylinder 240 hp...cheers...but i bet the one in goodwood was a 4 cylinder machine

    Not sure that the Porsche handles better than the Elan. Rather, it seems that the Porsche's driver handles his car better than the Elan's driver does.
