These were about 1,100 pounds with 450-540 horsepower. So a similar power to weight ratio as modern F1. Much more nimble than the modern cars of course. It would be interested to see how much faster they’d be with modern carbon brakes. Probably 2 or more seconds/lap. And their feet were well ahead of the front wheels 😳.
My first race was in 1991 and I walked through the Williams garage from the back out to the pit lane on the Friday evening. I walked directly past Frank, who was in an aluminum device that had him standing upright. I made sure not to look at him and get outta there as soon as possible 😎. Jordan’s first car was beautiful and they were laidback about people being around.
In 79 I managed to be in the control room during the race, on the pit wall and in and out of every garage during the race… it was fantastic…. I met a number of the racers of the period…❤
Wow that is absolutely amazing that you were able to do all of that I’m so jealous. Even though I was born in 2005 the 70’s , 80s, 90s are the golden eras of F1 to me.
I saw some of these cars last year at the Long Beach Grand Prix. They were a support race for the indycar race that weekend. Hearing the sounds of these cars echoing off the streets of Long Beach was unlike anything I've ever heard! Really cool experience!
This is very beautiful. The only way this race could be improved is if these vehicles were freshly made reproductions so they could be pushed harder/possibly wrecked without destroying something historical.
You meant to say, "more entertaining" than current F1. Monaco is probably the most boring track because there's virtually no passing areas because the cars are so large.
@@_m_K_. No I meant what I said, Thanks. Senna had no problems passing at Monaco. Name any circuit that F1 races where passing isn't hard. Large tracks with long straightaways the speeds are high but the cars just get strung out.
Would have loved to have seen Jody Scheckter have a run (even just display laps)in that gorgeous '77 Wolf that he's selling (or may have been sold by now...)
I think that same McLaren Yardley sponsered car Ex Denny Hulme car is sitting in a Audi Dealership just up the road from me here in Auckland New Zealand
this is incredible. what an honor for each driver and each spectator. just imagine the engine sounds! could only be made better with some on-board footage
I know it wasn't the most competitive car but it would have been awesome to see a Tyrrell P34 out there too! But yeah I can watch this all day compared to the time attack/parade Monaco weekend we have now, I don't even watch the race anymore unless rain is forecast.
Bit of a silly comparison when there is a wider skill level spread to these fields (not to mention bigger performance gaps between the cars, these cars not being run by modern teams with a modern team's worth of information going into running the car, and many other variables). If we dropped some 60 year old into a modern F1 car around Monaco, they would probably still be overtaken without DRS by anyone on the current grid (the massive pace differential at work shows if you look at the intervals throughout this very short race). xD
Who's the commentator who loves name dropping on how rich these drivers are? Do we reaally need to know this? Are we really interested as he's not impressing me?
I thought these cars would race as exhibition only, you know! Nothing to risk 😮 but actually they're racing 🏁 for the trophies 🏆 😮 well!! Like the 70*s , these is SO dangerous because of lack of safety measures although today's drivers have Hans device , and ful face head HELMETS ,and the racing suit are more advanced 😊
For what i've watched of the 11 hours of the live video(i havent watched the whole 11 hours), it was probably the best race, i think Lyons won a race after this one, and there was one with more time spent under yellow and red flags than the race itself.
we don't care who's driving these cars, we care about the cars. The commentators should identify the cars by the year, marque and sponsor. The modern drivers are irrelevant even if fabulously talented.
Ah, just park your car near Fairmont Hotel - the valet will pick it up... 😋 You gotta love old-school stewardship - modern Formula 1 would Red Flag the whole race!
This was a breath of fresh air. Modern F1 is so boring that I hate it and never watch it. But I grew up watching Stewart, Fittipaldi, Lauda, and Hunt. Hated the lack of safety and the deaths, but I loved the battles!

Historic racing at Monaco is more entertaining than modern cars!
Sliding is just how these things turn.. Man that must be fun.... Crazy how big F1 cars have become.
"Crazy?"
Nope.
Use an accurate word.
@@AndrewBlacker-t1dModern cars are crazy both positively and negatively.
The modern F1 cars look 2x as wide and long.

I think a lot more people are getting into other various types of racing, being tired of NASCAR.
[ even NASCAR is getting tired of NASCAR 😐].
I just love how nimble they look! I miss older, smaller F1 cars so much
This is cooler than modern f1.
@@tadficuscactus it was just man and machine, these days its basically driving a computer on wheels

I saw these in mid 1970s, you could walk around James Hunts car in the pits, talk to driver and mechanics ....those were the days !!!!

I was born 20 years later, but this is the golden era of F1 for me.
I'm Brazilian, I live in Brazil and I'm tremendously grateful for you showing us this wonderful race from a wonderful time
Proper Formula One! I love it!
i can't believe there are no in car cameras. this is awesome
I was there, the sounds and the feelings are really choking in reality, a way much more loud and authentic
I saw some of these cars last year at the Long Beach Grand Prix. They were a support race for the indycar race that weekend. Hearing the sounds of these cars echoing off the streets of Long Beach was unlike anything I've ever heard! Really cool experience!
This is a proper F1 ever..shorter wheelbase...powefull...only groud effect no air dynamics...and full driver skills.....This is it !!!
these cars dont have lots of power and yes they do have "air dynamics"
Love hearing the co commentators having fun, chatting but, almost close to bickering.
In the best of ways the latter reminds me of Walker and Hunt.
looks better than current cars and sounds better . its the sound i like .
This is so much fun to watch! This is F1!
This is very beautiful. The only way this race could be improved is if these vehicles were freshly made reproductions so they could be pushed harder/possibly wrecked without destroying something historical.
I love how theres still enough of these working to do these races
Uhhh its called money dude lol and as long as there’s men with money who wanna keep these cars alive they’ll be here.
Knew Mo Nunn very well indeed. Nice to see an Ensign out there on the track.
This should be the goal of the 26 rule changes... sliding and sound!
Not sure if these are the same cars I got to see at COTA last year but it was such a nice surprise to see classic F1 cars
OMG....... beautiful, beautiful cars
70s racing looks amazing at Monaco! Look at all the overtakes, I counted one!
A thought for the marshal who waved the yellow flag throughout the race at Portier corner 😂😂
the 312t is still so beatiful!
I like how these old cars run perfectly to race, but I can't keep my 10yo honda from leaking oil.
🤣 🤣 🤣
Perhaps investing hundreds of thousands into your car would fix the problem
Maintenance 👍
@@KitKitChanIsaacI wish I had a rich dudes living room with a racecar in it.
Hondas are notorious for leaking oil. As long as it doesn’t start leaking too much, just keep adding oil and it will keep running.😁
i got goosebumps each time these cars pass through the straight....
Great upload Goodwood 👌
These were the ultimate ones for Monaco's heritage to race
I was 7 in 1973, this is my era of childhood wonder!
I wish F1 would go back to smaller cars, even if its slower, its much better racing.
Slower racing is almost always better.
Just as entertaining as current F1 except these cars are better looking.

I hope so because this historic Monaco does need to keep with the times and what us fans want to see. Yes your definitely right there my friend 👍

This is the best
Real F1.... Cars dancing on their tyres, always nervous and balanced on the edge....!
Imagine a full series with these cars I would watch this over new f1
This formula is the perfect size for this track. If they want to keep this track they need a historical formula
love seeing the difference between the rich guys in their cars vs the real drivers
Tecnically Monaco is one of the hardst, and of course Franchorchamps is the most beautyfull circuit in the World!!! Belgium here

What about the Nordschleife
What the nordschleife has going for it is the fact that it's actually enjoyable.@yannikharing4088
@@yannikharing4088 Nordschleife kills F1 drivers.
Oh look, they can overtake! I was under the impression that nobody had ever overtaken in an F1 car prior to 2011 and DRS. What’s going on here??
Just normal overtaking in Monaco... As if you've never seen one! 😁
It's because the current F1 cars are the size of a large SUV.😂

its hard to compare because there were other drivers, different specs and a slightly different track layout

They have money and they scour the back pages of Motor Sport Magazine for any vintage F1 cars or go to Goodwood and do their bidding there.

77 laps for a Monaco GP i think not looking it up and 44 for spa

This is why F1 should abandon Monaco as a normal event, make it a stand alone event in classic style F1 cars at modern safety levels, all cars equal.
