  • This video features railway operations on the heritage railway known as the Dartmouth Steam Railway, located in South Devon, England, UK, running between Paignton and Kingswear/Dartmouth.
    -
The line was originally opened in 1861 by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway, at first to Brixham Road station, then on to Kingswear in 1864. This railway had been operated originally by the South Devon Railway, which was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway Company (GWRC) in 1876. The line for its entire existence, from non-heritage to today, has seen incredible popularity with tourists, but despite this and various changes to service patterns and continued enjoyment by the public, the railway began to incur consistent revenue losses, which coincided with the "Beeching Report" in 1963, which didn't specify the railway for immediate closure, but noted the need for "modifications" to the line or its services. Ultimately, the railway would be marked for closure at some point, its final days coming to head on 28th October 1972.

Later that same year in December, the Dart Valley Light Railway Ltd company bought the railway from British Rail, who originally owned the now heritage South Devon Railway further north near Totnes. The purchase of the railway was roughly £250,000, equivalent in 2023 money to roughly £4.2 million. Over the years the number of available stock, services and upgrades to the line have only increased, and nowadays ticket types include a single or return trip on one of 6-10 or more trains each way per day, steamboat or regular boat trips up the River Dart, and even round trips including a heritage bus trip from Paignton to Totnes, a river cruise from Totnes to Dartmouth, a short hop ferry to Kingswear, and a return railway trip to Paignton.

The railway length today is roughly 6 miles 57 chains long (10.8 km), running from its own platform connected to the mainline Paignton Railway Station in the north, to its terminus at Kingswear in the south. Interestingly, Dartmouth Railway Station has no tracks or platforms, only a booking office (+ cafe/etc). You can book tickets through Dartmouth station, taking a small ferry over to Kingswear to continue your journey on the heritage trains. Their rollingstock includes a number of steam and diesel units, including steam engine BR Standard Class 4 75014 "Braveheart", and diesel engine Class 37 D6975, both seen in this video.

This video includes mainline and heritage trains around Paignton station, a trip along the line to Kingswear, and a brief ferry trip across the estuary to Dartmouth; no filming at Dartmouth's ticket office is included, due to my need to catch a bus on time(!).
