  • The autumn months have arrived, bringing about the start of a new school year and the end of the summer holidays. This signals the move away from intensive timetables across heritage railways, as they rein in their operations in favour of more relaxed services.
The Dartmouth Steam Railway has made a habit in recent years of being one of the last railways on the south coast to implement such changes, employing their Orange timetable until mid-September. This timetable sees two trains operating over the line, delivering an intensive schedule throughout the day.
Despite appearances, conditions were deceptively hot and humid for the day. 75014 "Braveheart" would put in a fine showing, rubbing shoulders with Class 37 - 6975; the 37 making all the right noises as it thrashed up the steep gradients offered by the 'English Riviera'. 'Small Prairie' - 4555 would make a brief appearance while performing a test run over the DSR.
    Locomotives:
    BR Standard Class 4MT - 75014 "Braveheart"
    BR Class 37 - 6975
    GWR 4500 Class 'Small Prairie' - 4555
All footage filmed on Thursday the 7th of September 2023.

Excellent I went from Wellington to Auckland and back as a kid I NZ on the last of the steam trains in 1961. Still remember entering the Rimutaka tunnel with the widow open cinders and smoke yes . These are an important part of history.A treasure for us all to enjoy.

Excellent video. Bit sad that the availability of the services was, by observation of the passing carriages, poorly ‘frequented’. Maybe DSR should reconsider the scheduling of an intensive service, once the metrological ‘Autumn’ is reached.
With steaming coal supplies being so precarious or even, apparently, needlessly burning diesel in a Type 37, when demand is low, in these ecologically focussed times, seems to demand a ‘quid pro quo’.
Excellent captures and recording. Thanks for your high production standards.

To be fair, 07th September is a Thursday in the first week of the new school year. Not prime school holiday season so I’d expect trains to be quiet. Maybe they could run shorter trains but perhaps the cost of remarshalling stock outweighs the benefit.

13:55 Our cameraman got a wave from both crewmen, there's an extra point for that.

Found out its a post Covid /Hoskin business decision. Suits them( not you) to not stop at Goodrington and Churchton anymore. Ah well when you got fingers in lots of pies like him what do you expect. PLC

They’re trying to focus their business on a combined steam train (Paignton-Dartmouth) and boat trip on the Dart. More of a charter/excursion operation than hop-on/off for tourists. I imagine the National Trust site at Greenways is suffering too.

I gotta say from watching the class 37 in action i totaly understand why all diseals where favoured motive power over steam in the 60s beyond😮
