  • We start our journey at Paignton, one of Devon’s most popular holiday resorts and finish in one of the country’s most scenic settings at Kingswear and Dartmouth.
British Railways 4-6-0 standard Class 4 No.75014 "Braveheart" is simmering at the head of its Chocolate and cream coaches waiting for the guard to make sure all the doors are closed before blowing his whistle to let the locomotive crew know that his train is ready to depart. A toot from the locomotive, followed by a purposeful exhaust beat and we are on our way. The formation along the first mile or so is shared with Network Rail as far as Goodrington carriage sidings used by GWR and CrossCountry trains waiting to form national rail services towards Exeter, London and the North. Goodrington is also the first station on the Dartmouth Steam Railway after which our train runs close to the holiday beaches along coast before turning inland to cross Broadsands and Hookhills viaducts to arrive at Churston, one time junction for the Brixham branch. USATC S160 Class No.2253 "Omaha" was waiting in the passing loop ready to continue on to Paignton once our train had cleared the section. Not long after Churston we enter Greenway tunnel after which we are treated to our first views over the River Dart from the impressive Greenway viaduct as the line descends through the wooded slopes to run next the scenic Dart estuary for the last mile into Kingswear station.
Although Kingswear is the end of the line it is not the last station, to reach Dartmouth station, now a café, we have to catch a ferry across the estuary. Dartmouth and the views along the estuary are some of the most beautiful views to be seen anywhere in the world. We join a ferry at Dartmouth destined for Greenway, once the home of Agatha Christie, creator of the legendary detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
I had intended to create two videos, one covering the river cruise and another featuring the railway, but to be honest it’s difficult to separate them, because the railway and its trains are constantly in the background of any river adventure, just as the river is part of the train ride.
The captain welcomes us aboard his ferry for a truly fascinating cruise up the river, passing Dartmouth Naval College, car ferry’s, boatyards, wildlife and scenes that have featured in Agatha Christie’s novels. At Greenway Quay we are joined by people who have visited Christie’s holiday home “Greenway House” for the trip back to Dartmouth.
Please join me to see some of the best scenery Britain has to offer.

Hi Tim! And again a wonderfully adjusted steamer in use. What a nice sound. The residents of the water, lying lazily on the jetties and buoys, are apparently used to the boats and people. Nice video Tim and Cheers 🍻.

Hello Hans, the coastline and estuaries in this part of Devon and Cornwall are often referred to as the English Riviera because it is so scenic with wonderful sandy coves between the rugged cliffs. The seals no where they can lie in the sun without being disturbed by people. You'll need 🍺 after watching this. Cheers.

Hi Tim excellent production. I only watch YT as well gave up TV many years ago. Too much same old same old. Poirot etc was very good excellent attention to detail. Rebecca watches Downton Abbey and I also appreciate that as well. The producer is an absolute genius. The characters are true to life and spontaneous. Am busy refurbishing my caravan. Hope to get up to Queensland sometime but not while the virus is charging about. I will wait until it is back in the bottle. Cheers take care John

Hello John, TV over here is just depressing, we don't want to hear about Covid 24 hrs a day, I pick out one or two things I want to watch, then turn it off. YT is my favorite source of entertainment followed by Netflix, I'm a sucker for all the way too perfect Christmas films. I miss my caravan, bought my first one when I was 19, sadly the roads in the UK are overcrowded and most of the caravan sites became more like holiday parks whereas I used to like somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Like you I'm looking forward to the day when the virus is sorted, I miss travelling. Best wishes to You and Rebecca, I hope you have a good Christmas. Cheers. Tim.

Hi Tim I am watching a chap on YT who repairs land rovers. I was very surprised to find that the Diesel 3L V6 has a habit of snapping crankshafts. The Discovery is often to blame. That was fun to watch the chap lift the body off remove the engine and show the damage then repair the blighter. He got another engine with a good crank and a damaged head and did a mix and match.
Well hope we can all get around soon but it looks like it may be sometime ahead. Rebecca is making sure I stay safe by enforcing mask wearing when in public. A 5 minute lecture accompanies any indiscretion so I am being a good chap. R was born in the UK and was sent to the penal colony of Australia as a child migrant to bring a bit of English culture to the greater unwashed. Chuckle 😎🧐

@@johnmchardy1229 Hello John, there are some good creators who post the kind of things you never see on main stream TV such as the Landrover Guy you mention. I'm pleased to hear that Rebecca is keeping you in order, at least you know she cares. Most of the people I meet in Oz describe themselves as £10 poms, they seem to be pretty happy with their lot. It's raining and cold here, somehow a warm sunny day at the beach doesn't sound like too bad a punishment 😊.

14:19 That's unusual to see a ferry like that. Usually the ferries are self-propelled with on-board petrol or diesel engine or steam-powered(like those that crossed between Newcastle and Stockton, Australia, up to 1st November, 1971). Others have pully arrangements with cables each side of the ferry deck and propelled by motors running winches to move the ferry to either side of a river, but these are only used when there are no other maritime operations to consider. There are a couple of these up at Port MacQuarie. and way back in the 1950s to the early 1960s the Williams River crossing at Raymond Terrace had such a cable ferry but it was replaced by the FitzGerald Bridge.

I'm glad you enjoyed both the train and boat ride. Dartmouth has a wonderful, slightly hippie feel good atmosphere, I love the place.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Yes, lately I too tend to be on YT more than on TV. At least on YT I choose what I watch, while on TV they feed you a lot of pandemic news that I cannot stand anymore. I do like to watch these train drives on the big screen however, they look better on TV and I am more comfortably seated for long journeys, so the TV is good for that reason at least. We used to have the Poirot and Miss Marple series run here in the past and I watched them all. Love Agatha Christie's style of writing, when I was younger I read most of her books.
      Thanks again Tim. 😘

@@OmniaInNumerisSitaSunt British TV used to be the best in the world, sadly that is not the case anymore, the BBC no longer makes decent programs and those they do make are so ruined by their political message, that they are unwatchable. ITV still makes some decent dramas, but the reality rubbish they fill the schedual with in an insult to anyone with half a brain and the adverts that once sold products now try to indoctrinate us with political massages. A lot of people I know are cancelling their subscription to Sky because they no longer want to pay £50 a month to watch repeats and adverts that miss-represent the makeup of the British population, besides most of the stuff on Sky is available for free on Freeview. I don't know what TV is like where you are, I hope it is better than the rubbish here in Britain. I watch TV to be entertained, I resent people telling my what and how to think, I come from a generation that could still think for itself, educated in a time when there were no mobile phones or computers, if we wanted to know something we'd go to the library to look it up. Computers are both good and bad, they enable us to communicate in a way that wasn't possible 25 years ago, it's the way we use that communication that can be a problem, especially when it comes to youngsters using Facebook, they forget that their parents, future employers and their school teachers can also see what they post.
Smart TV's have changed the way we receive television, now it easy to watch the likes of YT and Netflix, it even gives people like myself the ability share our hobbies on TV. I'm enjoying Christmas films on Netflix at the moment, they are just relaxing, feel good films with no adverts to spoil them. We have a couple of channels over here that show nothing but repeats from the 1970's to the 1990's reminding us of the days when both the BBC and ITV made wonderful sitcoms such as Dad's Army, Only Fools and Horses, Minder and Last of the Summer Wine to name just a few. Maybe I'm stuck in a time warp, but it is noticeable that my children also enjoy these sitcoms from yesteryear just as much as I do.
Take care and stay safe. Tim 😊.

@@Timsvideochannel1 The television here is as you describe it in England, full of ads, misinformation and revolting reality shows that the young like watching but I keep telling my daughter to not get hooked on them. They are not the staple of a good diet when it comes to TV shows. And then all these pandemic news where you get conflicting information and endless narratives about it. 🙄
Would be the best to find an outdoor hobby/activity but even that you are restricted to do with these snap lockdowns. I love gardening but I find it hard to obtain things I need with lockdowns and also the heat and humidity gets to me. It's during the Aussie winters that I do most of my gardening and now the heat is coming and the rains and they predict an especially rainy and stormy season this year; the la nina. I just hope my house will still stand by the end of it. 😲
So I'll be chatting with you Tim a lot more than usual, which I enjoy as much as your videos. 😊

@@OmniaInNumerisSitaSunt Maybe TV will go a complete circle and start broadcasting better programs when they finally realize that they are losing their audience to internet based TV. The News programs are so depressing I've stopped watching them, things really aren't that bad, I had my booster jab this morning. To be honest I think the News programs are causing more damage to the nations health than Covid is. Your garden looks lovely, a credit to all the hard work you put in. Autumn is turning to winter over here, the leaves have fallen, I spent a couple of hours yesterday raking them up. It was good to chat, I'm sure we'll catch up again 😊.

Here's me thinking I've never been to Dartmouth, and yet I have because I remember the ferries although I was quite young, but i didn't realise the boats were just attached to the ferry by ropes and just towed it along, i thought it was attached by a pivoting bracket at the front of the boat so it could pivot 180'.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. It's odd how we have memories from our early years, yet we can't place where we saw them until much later on, when one of the missing pieces falls into place. Those ferries are fascinating to watch.

  • @neilforbes416
    @neilforbes416 2 года назад

16:16 Yeah, this is a better version of this type of ferry, board one end, disembark on the other end and the tug only needs to swing itself around to pull ferry in either direction, while the other ferry requires the tug to manouvre the ferry into a position where the cars have to reverse to disembark before the next load can board.
