You can actually learn more about Monsoon by talking with Kevin through the codec after the boss fight. As a Filipino, this game (through Monsoon of all characters) made me realize that my neighboring countries have also been through horrific stuff; "Phnom Penh" is the capital of Cambodia. Calling Kevin after Monsoon's boss fight also gives a detailed discussion about memes, which carry a very different meaning from how we use the word today. In fact, Metal Gear Rising is actually the last major piece of media utilizing the word with its original meaning. "Ripper Mode" is clearly Raiden's breaking point, but also alludes to two things. First, it is a reference to an infamous serial killer in 19th century London: "Jack the Ripper." Considering the killing that Raiden does within the story and in-game, the name is certainly fitting. More importantly, its the "super form" that the playable character takes in these hack-and-slash games; its basically a variant of the "Devil Trigger" form in the Devil May Cry games that doesn't heal, but allows you to go slice-and-dice without the need to go into blade mode. As a matter of fact, Platinum Games - the actual developer of this game after it was handed off to them by Kojima Productions - is filled with multiple veteran hack-and-slash game developers, which used to include Hideki Kamiya: the creator of Bayonetta and the very first Devil May Cry (the pioneering game of the genre, which I'd love to see you try especially since its currently on sale). Although Kamiya did not direct this game, one of the other people who worked on Bayonetta - Kenji Saito - is the actual director of this game. Sorry for the long comment, but this game is very special to me not just as a fan of Metal Gear, but also hack-and-slash games. If you love what you've played here and can stomach even more goofiness, you can definitely give the aforementioned Devil May Cry (which is about to have its own Netflix series btw produced by the same guy behind the Castlevania show) and Bayonetta games a go.
The guy one the ground at 3:13:22 was petting a white cat you can find throughout the game, if for whatever reason you try to slash at the cat it'll dodge all your attacks. It's almost certainly a reference to Jeanne from Bayonetta which is made by the same devs
I've never actually seen a gamer take the time to learn the moves and listen to all the codec conversations in this game. It shows that you actually have a deep appreciation for it. Mad respect to you. 🤘🥷 You did miss the soldier in the cardboard box in the sewer though. When you cut the box open the alert ! appears and he gets scared and asks you not to kill him. Nice little MGS easter egg.
i love the way the whole game is gradually teaching you as well. The learning curve itself is pretty fun, its a bit of bump getting started, then you start to get it and reach the functional stage and then after experimenting you can start reaching that mgs4 cutscene Raiden feeling with some of the shit you can pull off by the end of the game
The Dwarf Gekko having to flip the USB before it goes in is such a relatable little gag lol Would've been more realistic if he had to flip it again and THEN it suddenly fits :D
Two of the most important things to remember in this game: you can parry/block EVERY attack that isn't followed by a yellow light and you can do codec calls anytime, that includes in the middle of boss fights just like in previous games
Every time I replay this game or watch someone play it I love the story even more. Doktor is one of my favorite MG side characters. He's like an evil mad scientist, but a decent guy!
The codec conversations during the Monsoon fight are hilarious because Raiden is still in full Jack mode and the team is horrified. Also, it's actually possible to parry the stuff Monsoon throws at you even if it makes no sense haha
on my first playthrough I hadn't payed attention and didn't know about parrying, I did the entire fight by dodging and sliding. I struggled until I got to the boss gauntlet, got my ass handed to me and quit thinking the game was too damn hard.
It's good to see you enjoying Rising. It may not be fully in the style of previous MGS games, but it has its own brand of awesome. The game is very short, but from here it just keeps getting better and better. Can't wait to see you react to the final segments.
Hey, someone who actually took the Monsoon segment somewhat seriously and knows the original meaning of memes, refreshing xD Really hard to do so for most, with memes being so ingrained in us in their newer meaning (and the amount of ham and over-the-topness in the game lmao). Not that one excludes the other, gotta love Monsoon the memelord Hope you get better soon, lots of fun ahead of you!
Monsoon the memelord has a nice ring to it 🤣 Yeah I only know from the comments on my MGS4 videos when they first mentioned memes like that!! And thank you so much 🥰
I'm catching up on videos, but I just want to say how funny it is that Whimsy has misunderstood the first episode, thinking waaay too hard about Raiden's sword when the problem was nothing more than "Hey Raiden why don't you kill people?"
1:43:02 i really like the attetion to detail here where you can hear the doctor dropping on the floor from the left side of your headphones and george on the right, ive only noticed that after replaying it
Ah MGR love this game still top 5 favorite game. I waited for this game to come out since i got into the metal gear series probably back in mgs2 days.raiden still favorite character
Wooo, congrats on beating the Rayman-cosplaying meme boss! 🤪Also congrats on being the .001% of youtubers that actually acknowledges the frickin codec in this game, let alone listening to so much of it. (It turns out the story is actually pretty simple and easily foreshadowed when you pay attention to it, huh!?) Gameplay stuffs: - *Defensive offense is indeed the best move!* IT HAS I-FRAMES! It's literally like the dodge-roll maneuver from Dark souls games! You can use it in every direction, and it's OP AF. It phases through dangerous/grabby attacks AND does damage at the same time. In my not-so-humble opinion it should have been part of the base kit in the game, and the fact that they gated it behind an optional unlock is the most disgusting fail by the developers. It's an important move! In fact in most situations, it can even replace blocking when used properly. Master it. Love it. Pray to it. Hug it when you sleep at night. It's the best. - The best poledancing move is actually not the one you paid points for, but the basic combo: heavy-light-heavy -> and then keep mashing heavy. You can even move during it. Try it. ;) - Blade mode mechanics: It sucks for actual damage. You shouldn't use it in fights unless there's a specific opportunity for it, or if you need to precision aim. When parts of enemies are glowing blue, that means they've been damaged enough to be severed with blade mode, *but you need a full fuel bar.* Whenever you activate blade mode with a full (enough) bar, you get a 50% time slow. If you use it in ripper mode, it becomes a 90% time slow. Otherwise, it doesn't slow time at all and you can't see the red boxes with it. *You can also move in blade mode by pushing in the left stick.* - You do not, in fact, need the fox blade. Nor should you get it. It actively ruins and trivializes the game. It specifically does such joke levels of damage that everything dies in just a few hits, and it even insta-dismembers things as if you were in blade mode, but without having to be in blade mode. Don't use it for a first playthrough please. - It's easy to get "stuck" in long combo-ey animations and lose control of your character for a bit, right? How tragic when an attack is incoming and Raiden is still busy flipping and twirling around... *You can usually override anything with defensive-offense, a parry, or by activating blade mode.* Any of these 3 actions can animation-cancel out of whatever you're doing. Usually. Probably. - Another quality move you haven't bought yet, but I recommend checking out is the "falling lightning". You might have to buy another move before it unlocks. It's literally a Falcon Kick, and Falcon Kicks are awesome. Anyone who plays Smash will agree. It works best while you're locked on to an enemy. 🙃 You're like the first youtuber I've seen that's actually bothered to learn the game mechanics before going maximum ADHD mode and plowing through 90% of the game in 5 minutes. I have such high hopes for your Sundowner fight. ;) You're going to do great, I'm sure! 😅
Really cool that you're enjoying the game so much! You have a very solid grasp of the various mechanics, especially the parry. Something about how it all flows together is so satisfying. I also think the story is a very thoughtful continuation of Raiden's post-MGS4 journey. The characterization and lore details are surprisingly nuanced for a "spinoff hack and slash" game. Doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves!
Whimsy, when you're using the Polearm's combo enders, like the heavy, light, heavy that you like so much - you can continue to mash heavy to extend it, sometimes very long. Pretty satisfying, eh?
I really like how you analyze MGR, this game also has a deep plot despite what other MG fans says. Can't wait to see what do you think about the rest of the game.
I don't know when you'll read this, but while in blade mode, Triangle does a vertical cut, which can be useful when you aren't completely aligned with a target.
@WhimsyPsyche Yes, I was about to edit my comment but then you replied 😅. Also, you can do codec calls during boss fights. Gives you a lot of info about bosses too.
3:34:45 Yeah, you're right. As suggested at the very beginning of the game, Raiden was mentally weak, which made him unable to effectively fight Samuel.
They didn’t kill the president straight away because he was using him as leverage to get raiden to follow, once he was on the train they no longer had use for him, plus they president wasn’t listening to what sundowner was saying so maybe he killed him out of frustration 🤣
Ahh yes. Memesoon of the Memes of Destruction. Meme or be Memed' Whimsy. It is everything we Meme'd. Doktor, turn off my Meme inhibitors so I can enter Devil Trigger I mean RIPPER MODE. I'm glad you finally got to that boss fight. Its not easy considering its the "I hope you practiced Parrying" boss.
05:00 Everyone knows Luc Marches de Ciel! 06:55 EVERYTIME I learn combos like that in a game... IMMEDIATELY when entering battle my brain goes and I revert to button mashing... 20:35 Paramedic would've known about it. Call her up. Every time I see you mouse cursor on screen I try to move it with my mouse, just to realize it's not mine. 27:50 Murasama is apparently a mistranslation and is Muramasa in Japanese, which is an actual swordsmith. Just like Masamune, which is also the name of Sephiroth's sword, like you said. 35:35 It sounds more french than it should be. He pronounced it not 100% correct. There are dialects that could make it sound like that, but I'm not sure if he was going for that. 😂 36:55 Yeah! This game has great codec writing overall, with good humour. Funnily enough, George is voiced by Sean T. Krishnan from Ontario. 😂 01:16:05 Yeah, go smack that ass! :_whimsypog: 01:44:05 Sorry, Grey Fox. Dressing as a Mariachi is more important! 01:50:05 Is this Jedi: Fallen Order all ober again? 01:57:10 The map glitches sometimes on PC. Had the same problem. I don't remember exactly how to get rid of it, but I think I went into a menu and then out of it, that sometimes made it display the map correctly again. Maybe I tabbed out of the game and back again. 02:00:30 Don't know why they chose to use "un" here, since it's French and not German. 😂 02:13:05 You can see the machine parts in the codec screen with George. 02:20:05 Dummkopf = stupid head. I didn't like the Sai, switched right back to the polearm. For me it's definitely in the top 3 MGS games. The codec writing alone is better than in most of the others, which is super funny to me. 03:39:40 Goofy elements are in MGS as well, this is no different. Super fun episode! Hope you have a wonderful day, Whimsy!
Just to add that Muramasa is well know in japanese culture for making violent and cursed blood ungry swords. In games they are usualy cursed but deadly and drenched in blood. As a example, those swords appear in many Final Fantasy games. Also, that should be well know, but since it more than 30 years ago.... "go ninja go" is the chorus of the theme song done by vanilla ice in Teenage mutant ninja turtles second movie (1991).
Sometimes those cyborg implants sound really tempting to me. Have my eyes fixed up, maybe a fully functional adrenal glend. Then again, I`ve done quite well with the existing hardware, and you know, it keeps you creative. All those cybernetics can make you just lazy. It`s good to work with what you`ve got, even if it isn`t 100% functional.
5:13 Skysteps. Ils écrivent marches comme si c'était les marchent individuels d'un escalier. En anglais, une marche d'escalier se prononce step ou steps au pluriels. Salut de la Rive-sud en passant
People were saying that this game isnt good because they didnt pay attention to the story. As for the title being revengeance it has more to do with the metal gear solid rising project by kojima productions failing and platinum games is taking Revenge and Vengeance by making Metal Gear Rising. If the kojima production game was released it would have been a prequel to what you are playing. Platinum games didnt listen to kojima and made the game the way they wanted.
As i said those who consider this game non canon missed the points of the game. its a action game not a stealth game i wouldn't call it a spin off at all it is its own game and i love it.
Monsoon's Sai appears useless at first. I'll let you figure out on your own why it's special but it's amazing on single targets, especially bigger boys and the polearm is great for when you're surrounded
I don't think Sam and Monsoon wanted to prey on Raiden or make Jack come out, I think they were trying to demnonstrate to him that he's a hypocrite, and at heart he's just like them. When you are are disillusioned with certain moral codes and principles, you get annoyed when other people are self righteous about them, and you try to demonstrate to them that they don't really believe what they preach. Also, I believe the "strong prey on the weak as it should be" means Raiden/Jack. He was already (at least from their point of view) preying on the weak, like all the cyborgs he has killed that were much weaker than him, but now that he embraces that without hesitation, really ensures the continuation of the meme that this is the true human nature.
*Police uses guns and rocket launchers against Raiden* *Raiden says something vaguely threatening* Police: "Wow, you just threatened us. Now we can use LETHAL FORCE!" *they switch to tiny batons instead* Makes total sense.
Yeah, he cut George in half. The Doctor had him so close that that simply killing him without injuring George was darn near impossible. Even with the opening George tried to give, Raiden didn't have the reflexes(or mindset) for something that delicate. So when George said don't worry about him, that was basically "Kill him even if you gotta kill me too." Fortunately Raiden took care of George's body in such a way that his life could be preserved. But yeah, he did cut through George to kill the Doctor, and for a moment, he felt like Jack again, killing as he pleased.
As hype as the monsoon fight is, I feel like that cutscene takes away from Raiden's growth in the solid games. In any case the game is semi canon at best. Doesn't detract from its greatness though!
Metal gear solid game Mexico stage is lit wow way to go platinum I think this stage was funny and awesome being from Texas that close to the heart I like the costume they gave radon it’s like a cameo in this game or,??. Jk lol
Don't stress your health just for us! Whenever you need time away, take it, please. That being said... I hope you decide to play Alice: Madness Returns. It's a stellar proto-soulslike game from 2011 with a stellar story.
Spoiler in thoughts, but not really a spoiler. Open only if you want to read it: I will say that this is cannon in my eyes from the main canon of the original series, and unless Konami continues it; although this is start to the end of raidens series cannon. It’s sad that kogima and Konami entrusted them with the series through the Konami llc, but they never continued it. My general assumption is that they’ll probably continue it at some point after the remakes of some of the series. I do hope they’d take it on under the Konami llc, but this was a great way to end the series.
I love the morality understanding, but at the same time raiden is the good guy compared to them. It’s a lot of food for thought, given there is like any other mgs game… a story with some philosophical thoughts/themes that can relate to real life etc.
You missed a guy hiding in a box in the sewers just before you find the door to lab. Look around at boxes and barrels if you cut them an enemy will appear and you can get a free zendatsu if you find yourself low on health in between encounters. Also with monsoon your supposed to parry the rolling garbage to then eventually blade mode it.
39:03 - Hi Whimsy, that enemy unit is called a "Mastiff". Weirdly a Mastiff is a Dog, but this enemy acts more like a Gorilla. So it should've been called a "Silverback". Originally it was supposed to be a concept design for the "Haven Troopers (FROGS) in MGS4, but was ultimately scrapped in favor of enhanced female human soldiers. It then resurfaced as an enemy UG in this game. Also get well soon! ☺️🤙
Equally hyped and horrified is _the_ feeling of the day! WOW! That was an insane moment. I loved it. But also... it makes me sad... aaah Hope you enjoy the video!

11:00 He was a meat shield for Sundowner, I'm sure you understand the connection with Sundowner and shields by now...
A perfect video to pair with breakfast!
That sure is a loooooong-ass breakfast! 🤯
@@Trolldamere I like to take my time. Good for the digestion! 😉
What meme do we think Monsoon gives Raiden?
I hope it's the one with the frog on a unicycle!
😂
I hope it's YTPs!
*Mah boi.* This meme is what all true ninjas strive for.
Oh shit! Here come that boi
Get well soon everybody is sick these days in turkey too
fun fact raiden's voice actor also voiced alberto falcone in arkham origins
"Maybe i'll be disappointed by the end"
Don't worry, you won't.
@WhimsyPsyche our birthday is a couple days away! i hope you've got something fun planned twin 😂❤. Loving this game and playthrough so much
05:00 Everyone knows Luc Marches de Ciel!
36:55 Yeah! This game has great codec writing overall, with good humour.
Funnily enough, George is voiced by Sean T. Krishnan from Ontario. 😂
01:16:05 Yeah, go smack that ass! :_whimsypog:
01:44:05 Sorry, Grey Fox.
02:13:05 You can see the machine parts in the codec screen with George.
1:43:34 is where you can watch someone experience pure joy lol
Sometimes those cyborg implants sound really tempting to me. Have my eyes fixed up, maybe a fully functional adrenal glend. Then again, I`ve done quite well with the existing hardware, and you know, it keeps you creative. All those cybernetics can make you just lazy. It`s good to work with what you`ve got, even if it isn`t 100% functional.
next time
I'M FUCKING INVINCIBLE

Skysteps. Ils écrivent marches comme si c'était les marchent individuels d'un escalier. En anglais, une marche d'escalier se prononce step ou steps au pluriels.
Salut de la Rive-sud en passant
Monsoon is the best boss of this game. All musics are really good tho
A nice 4hr video to pair up nicely with my university assignment, thanks whimsy
\(^o^)/
Aaah I hope your assignment is going well! Those can be rough sometimes 😭
go ninja, go! ;>
Malice is also a word we use in English (sorry if it's already been said, too lazy to check through the comments right now)
Thanks🐀
Due to family issues I may not be able to keep doing this but il try👍🐀
Thank you so much Ratking! Please please NEVER feel obligated at all to give, please!! I'd rather you take care of your family ❤️
@@WhimsyPsyche I can still talk for most part. Sing concrete blonde, tomorrow Wendy. Or not🐀cashing in
People were saying that this game isnt good because they didnt pay attention to the story.
3:17:30 Bayblade, Bayblade let it rip. Battlemasters let it rip.
*Police uses guns and rocket launchers against Raiden*
*Raiden says something vaguely threatening*
Police: "Wow, you just threatened us. Now we can use LETHAL FORCE!"
*they switch to tiny batons instead*
Makes total sense.
They still shoot you, even with RPGs (they don't even care about friendly fire). They just wanted to enjoy some police brutality
Imagine being able to play through all the other Metal Gear games as this version of Raiden?!?!!? 🤯😵💫🫠
🍖🗡️
8:11 Malice is the same word with the same meaning in English :)
But yeah, he did cut through George to kill the Doctor, and for a moment, he felt like Jack again, killing as he pleased.
it wasn't a rat it was a cat monsoons soilder was playing with i was hoping you would catch it lol
This guy’s cell phone is grand central station
Yes, Jack the Ripper is back.
As hype as the monsoon fight is, I feel like that cutscene takes away from Raiden's growth in the solid games. In any case the game is semi canon at best. Doesn't detract from its greatness though!
MY NAME IS MONSOON... OF THE MEMES OF DESTRUCTION!
Sephiroths was masamune its rival was murasame. There is also muramasa. 🤕
Metal gear solid game Mexico stage is lit wow way to go platinum I think this stage was funny and awesome being from Texas that close to the heart I like the costume they gave radon it’s like a cameo in this game or,??. Jk lol
Your memes... end here!
Don't stress your health just for us! Whenever you need time away, take it, please.
That being said... I hope you decide to play Alice: Madness Returns. It's a stellar proto-soulslike game from 2011 with a stellar story.
Oh I took a whole week!! This was just leftovers 🤣 Thank you though I appreciate that!
Monsoon was the most fustrating boss when i played this game the first time.
I lost for him so many times
Monsoon is basically the wake up call boss, if you haven't fully learned and dominated parry by then, it's only gonna get harder from there.
Spoiler in thoughts, but not really a spoiler. Open only if you want to read it:
I will say that this is cannon in my eyes from the main canon of the original series, and unless Konami continues it; although this is start to the end of raidens series cannon.
Mic sounding really nice fr!
35:40 I'm pretty sure the voice actor is German, but the way he pronounces some words is indeed weird. Especially the "Ostalgie".
Nah, he is American. His German pronunciation is fairly decent though I have to say but "Ostalgie" should have been pronounced with a hard G.
@ „Ich liebe Kapitalismus“ in the first episode was pronounced like a native. If he‘s American he fooled me, a German.
If you love pancho then you have to play the jedi fallen order
😮
You missed a guy hiding in a box in the sewers just before you find the door to lab. Look around at boxes and barrels if you cut them an enemy will appear and you can get a free zendatsu if you find yourself low on health in between encounters. Also with monsoon your supposed to parry the rolling garbage to then eventually blade mode it.
Welcome to the meme
Pro-Tip: if it's not Yellow, it's usually Parry-able REGARDLESS of how big the enemy, or the type of attack ;)
Solidus Snake's name is George Sears
39:03 - Hi Whimsy, that enemy unit is called a "Mastiff". Weirdly a Mastiff is a Dog, but this enemy acts more like a Gorilla. So it should've been called a "Silverback". Originally it was supposed to be a concept design for the "Haven Troopers (FROGS) in MGS4, but was ultimately scrapped in favor of enhanced female human soldiers. It then resurfaced as an enemy UG in this game. Also get well soon! ☺️🤙
