Having watched half, I see you not only check codecs, but engage with the tutorials and VR missions. My God, where have you been all my life? Keep it up. I think codecs usually update after every cutscene, even those ones where it's just Raiden walking around and talking on communicator. Not that every one gets a new one when that happens though. I think they stack, up to certain boss types and encounters, then refresh with new sets. Though you don't understand some aspects of gameplay, you're pretty adept at picking it up over time. The biggest thing is just knowing when to engage blade mode. Y'know those times when the screen flashed blue, during those special stealth kills? Whenever the screen has a blue flash, that means you should use blade mode(press and hold L1) to start cutting your enemies until you Zandatsu, or aim for a glowing left hand. Haven't finished the video, maybe you realized it, but I just thought to mention it now. Very great start. Looking forward to more.
Even though MGR is a fast paced action game, I love how it has a surprisingly robust codec. So many cool lore and character details are included all throughout their conversations.
One thing I love about your playthroughs is that you listen to almost all codec calls, I had no idea MGR had such a rich dialog hidden away in the codec calls, and I'm all here for it!
"A stranger I remain" I personally liked "Rules of nature" and "Standing here I realize" more, but its probably my 3rd favorite. Collective consciousness was Also really good. Especially when you realize that it perfectly syncs up with "all I want for Christmas is you".
Another thing that I love so far of your gameplay is that you catched up quick to the combat mechanics, I've seen many people who really don't grasp the parry and the Zandatsu, but you've managed to get it through trial and error pretty fast... You're pretty good.
@@WhimsyPsyche the best anyone can say is if you don't like the way the story takes raiden (not in the direction Kojima intended and at odds with his character in MGS4) don't consider it canon
As a fan of this franchise since the very first Metal Gear (NES-version though), this might actually be my favorite MG game... It's canon to ME, at least.
Bruh I just finished watching your playtrough of the whole franchise, i watched your reaction to the end of MGS4 a few hours ago and i thought: what now? 😂 Thank u girl ❤
@@WhimsyPsyche Of course I will ☺️ By the way i thought it could be interesting a video of you reacting to the amazing details and tricks MGS has, i'm pretty sure you'd be 100% surprised. So glad you are playing this classic! I imagine you've already finished but for posterity, whenever the screen flashes blue like when doing stealth kills or performing the last hit on an enemy, you can enter freeblade mode to cut them open for health. Also when bigger enemies have their limbs turn blue it means you can use freeblade to cut them off. There a bunch of cool anims of enemies using bodies with less limbs to attack you!
Whymsy, when the enemies are marked with the blue light you can perform a Zendutsu on them, cut their spines and you will be full life. Weaker enemies with no body armor you can perform a Zendutsu too, also in enemies that stab from behind.
finally a first playthrough and the player is actually good at the game :D made me redownload it and play it again! being french, i didnt hear the ( use blade mode ) and kept dying to the missiles on the first boss. i was happy to see you NOT die to that
Thanks for translating Mistral's last words. I got the general idea of it from context, but still nice to know for sure. I think she was talking to either her family or, more likely to me, all those she killed who died for a cause. BTW, she called herself Mistral: the cold wind of France, but I only just now realized the irony/poetry of her dying from being frozen (which, BTW, to freeze an object her size all the way through in that amount of time would have required that liquid to be a temperature several times colder than absolute zero, which is physically impossible. I'm a bit of a science nerd)

Really enjoyed this first episode. You got to grips with things quickly. It takes a lot of people a while to get the hang of the slow down and Zandatsu stuff. First boss was a bit easy, but also you got good, just like they suggested.

I love that you give the codec crew their due. It might not gel with the faster pace of the gameplay compared to the other MGS games, but honestly the MGR support team is one of my favorites.
I totally get what you mean, it definitely slows everything down and is a bit counterintuitive for this game, but since I'm used to MGS by now, I just kept my habit of exhausting the codec. I can imagine for someone who hasn't played any other MGS, it might not be a reflex. Thank you so much!
YES! Been waiting patiently for you to get to this one! As usual I am glad you're taking the time to get accustomed to the control and the mechanics, bosses are no joke when it comes to parrying, and they will constantly remind you of that! Side note: You can parry 99% of whatever enemies throw at you, that includes Metal Gears!, so parry away, and zandatsu away! Already loving this first episode!
One of my favorite games ever, thank you so much for playing this whimsy :) This game is basically "raiden's badass so lets make a game about him" At 41:07 JetStream Sam's sheathe is basically an assault rifle that shoots his blade out for more speed and power Also, gotta love that dynamic OST :D
On controller it is actually easier to Parry. You juat have to press x and the left joystick forward. Took me playing through half the game to realize it was THAT easy. But it's pretty easy when you get used to it
Oh man, I am so forgetful with comments, but just wanted to say watching your MGS series playthroughs were so much fun over the past few weeks and can't wait for this one! Enjoy this eye and ear candy treat after the heavy course, that was the MGS main story!
To parry you have to tap the stick towards your enemy while you press light attack. And there are actually very few things you can’t parry. Metal Gear Ray’s plasma beam was the only attack it had that you can’t stop in any way.
Playing an action packed game the way you do really passes the time I felt like the whole video was not that long and the part where you forgot how to say the technique of the ninja slash mode was kinda funny in a cute way
Great that you found many things out on your own. An advice (that helped me as well the first time): you can parry everything.. really EVERYTHING in this game, regardless how big your enemy is.. ...except for some enemy attacks that glow yellow, these attacks can only be dodged with the dodge ability (you can press help in the pause menu to see how to use all your moves including your unlocked moves) Also try to practice how to cut in blade mode precisely with the right analog Stick, it will come in handy later
Don't apologise for listening to all the Codec calls, Whimsy. They're great for world-building for those who haven't played the game or for those who haven't bothered listening in their own playthrough. Personally, I love it.
I love this game. It's excellent, I remember playing it when it came out and people hating it because it's not really a metal gear game, but I loved it. Its only recently that people started paying attention to it. They're realizing the story is actually good too not just the combat (of course not as good as MGS but still has good themes). This is one of the games where I found out that the general public's opinion can be very wrong lol.
some things that might help with blade mode, think of it as a finisher only. it's not very useful unless the FC meter is blue, where it will do extra damage and slow down time. so it's all about gaining fuel until the meter is blue, and then it will slow down time and allow you to cut enemies apart, but some enemies you will have to damage normally until they glow blue before you can cut them. You can also often activate blade mode as a finisher when the screen goes into slow motion during normal combos, or when doing stealth attack, or if the big Kanji appears.
3.14 hell yeah whimsy out did yourself 🙌🙌 it's like John woo crossed with RuPaul's Drag race what a joy 🤘 thank you for all the joy & entertainment 🙏🌻🐝
I love that they implemented a proper Codec system in this despite it being a fast paced action game. In the MGS games, Codec goes downhill after 3, unfortunately. I especially love Doktor's segments, they really go into nerdy tech detail about how cyborgs work, transhumanism etc.
Whimsy sword training from the rat grip with bottom 2 fingers pinky and one above tight, rest for balance with both hands. Right foot one half in front of left aim blade between oppenets eyes. When strike take a half step forwards then one full one back. Let blade do the work don't swing like a baseball bat. Try with TV remote full body workout.
Oh wow, I totally forgot you were going to play this. This game be bonkers, can't wait to see your reactions. I hope you use the Codec as much in this one, you miss a lot of good stuff in this game, especially.
Alright! I'm all caught up with your Metal Gear series! This one is just straight up fun! Who cares if it's canon or not It's a fan service game for all the real Metal Gear fans who wanted to play as a Cyborg Ninja......... Ever since i saw Gray Fox!!! I wanted to play as a cyborg ninja! And that's what this game is for!
You can parry geckos when they charge at you in fact it activates a qte to deal some damage and also with normal enemies if you do a slide attack you can slowdown time and do a quick zendatsu just make sure you do them often even with ninjakills as you get free BP as a reward. Also you get a score bonus for completing a battle encounter without taking damage.
@@FLStyle Has never said anything about Rising not being canon, people just choose to interpret his words about it being a spinoff this way for whatever reason.
The secret to parry almost every attack is to NOT continually pressing in the direction of the enemies when attacking. Instead repeat this sequence very quickly during combat: 1 - Push the move stick in the direction of an enemy and release it. 2 - Press the attack button. What this will do is, if that enemy attcks you it will parry his attack, otherwise it will just attack the enemy normally. This game is fun when you get the hang od the combat system, but I don't think the story is canon to the MGS series.
The advantage of the "Free Blade Mode" is that you get to aim the cutting-angle for more precision by moving the stick around, you do NOT have to use the stick to perform the cut once you find the angle you want though, i.e. you can line it up then press X or Y to make the cut, and getting used to these mechanics is important. I remember when the game came out people thought you had to flick the stick to cut and they *hated* that.
I bought the soundtrack to this on cd like a decade+ ago, it's still in regular rotation in my car rofl - if that tells you anything about the whole ost :P Looking forward to watching this, I suspect the absolute ridiculous levels it goes to will bemuse you, given what already seemed like insanity in points during the prior MGS games lol. *edit* Yeah - Bladewolf is basically the 'Learn to parry, or else' boss fight lol. Good job getting the hang of it quickly, any experience with the likes of bayonetta / dmc etc basically puts you in the right mindset. Also, not sure if you've seen it yet - but regarding chopping the hands, you do indeed need to do it manually - the hands will be marked, you'll spot them :). Well - i guess you will spot them more when you're not still getting the hang of mechanics, you hopefully saw the one blinking you got. They're just collectibles anyway - for score, as you saw - if you miss them, the game presents an alternative objective - ie making you use blade mode to cut the gate locks. Finally, if i remember correctly - those three different colour armors were pre-order bonuses originally, from whatever store you bought the game from. In the later PC release, they just included everything. Also the fox-blade is crazy OP, I wouldn't recommend it for your first time playthrough, but it can be fun for a bit - it just cuts everything, all the time lol.
00:10 Well, actually you're early. You said you wanted to take a break and play the Arkham series. You're playing now before even starting Origins! Love Raiden's movement, and the parry feels so good! Platinum just got it down. 27:00 Setting the tone right away, with the music and everything. 44:05 He's also German. Must be a villain! 47:45 If you are on steam there should be a button to make a screenshot as well. You could map it to the same button as the share button on your PS5 controller or well, just use the keyboard real fast if you don't have enough buttons. I really liked the codec calls in this game! 01:09:20 I don't think I could ever afford one of those. Used all my points for other stuff. 01:10:50 Everyone was so amazed by the physics when they showed off the Blade Mode in trailers. 01:20:10 I only did a few of those VR missions. 01:57:30 But if you call that "playing god", is prosthetics also already considered "playing god"? Transplanting organs? Even just drugs that numb feelings? Where should the line be drawn? I remember that fight against the doggy being super tough. It's such a difficulty spike against everything else so far. 02:16:00 I also had trouble with this helicopter. 01:23:10 Pretty sure you need to do a Zandatsu on the targeted dude to get the ID from him. I couldn't do it either and had to slice the door. 😂 I seldomly managed to cut of the arm. Maybe that's why I couldn't afford more stuff. You got the good boy in your team now! Super fun episode! Glad you like it so far! Have a wonderful day, Whimsy!
So, the canon is kind of unimportant. It happens past the Kojima games so it doesn't interfere with anything. HOWEVER there are multiple MGS team members who helped write and make the game. It was also written by Etsu Tamari, who helped write Peace Walker and MGSV. So ultimately, whether or not it's "canon" doesn't matter much. If you think it's canon, it is.
Hi Whimsy, welcome back to the Metal Gear Universe!! 🤗 To answer your question at 1:44:35 about (David) Solid Snake, he's been dead for four years. 😵😱 Throughout MGS4 he's slowly dying, due to his accelerated aging. But he lived out his remaining days, with no war & no more suffering. Just living with both Otacon & Sunny, to see it through & stuck with him until the very end. 🙏

On controller it is actually easier to Parry. You juat have to press x and the left joystick forward. Took me playing through half the game to realize it was THAT easy. But it's pretty easy when you get used to it
I never clicked on a video so fast in my entire life. Let's gooooooooo
That's so sweet hehe I hope you enjoyed it!!
Oh man, I am so forgetful with comments, but just wanted to say watching your MGS series playthroughs were so much fun over the past few weeks and can't wait for this one!
Enjoy this eye and ear candy treat after the heavy course, that was the MGS main story!
Aah thank you so much! Let's gooo
You are the first i saw to be able cut enemies almost from the start. I love you
To parry you have to tap the stick towards your enemy while you press light attack. And there are actually very few things you can’t parry. Metal Gear Ray’s plasma beam was the only attack it had that you can’t stop in any way.
First episode of MGR is always a must watch because Rules of Nature reaction.
The best part is RULES OF NATURE!!!!!!!!!
Playing an action packed game the way you do really passes the time I felt like the whole video was not that long and the part where you forgot how to say the technique of the ninja slash mode was kinda funny in a cute way
I would listen to the codec calls they're good
So very glad to see you on this masterpiece after the FF7 Remake Series.
Great that you found many things out on your own.
An advice (that helped me as well the first time): you can parry everything.. really EVERYTHING in this game, regardless how big your enemy is..
...except for some enemy attacks that glow yellow, these attacks can only be dodged with the dodge ability (you can press help in the pause menu to see how to use all your moves including your unlocked moves)
Also try to practice how to cut in blade mode precisely with the right analog Stick, it will come in handy later
YES!!! Whimsy`s back to Metal Gear! haha This game is insane and I hope she loves it.
Finally, you've reached Peak Gaming for Chads.
Don't apologise for listening to all the Codec calls, Whimsy. They're great for world-building for those who haven't played the game or for those who haven't bothered listening in their own playthrough. Personally, I love it.
Thank you so much! They're so good right??
So keen for this series
I love this game. It's excellent, I remember playing it when it came out and people hating it because it's not really a metal gear game, but I loved it. Its only recently that people started paying attention to it. They're realizing the story is actually good too not just the combat (of course not as good as MGS but still has good themes). This is one of the games where I found out that the general public's opinion can be very wrong lol.
I honestly love it so much so far as well!!
MGR has some of the best codecs
They're legit so good and full of really relevant info!!
some things that might help with blade mode, think of it as a finisher only.
it's not very useful unless the FC meter is blue, where it will do extra damage and slow down time.
so it's all about gaining fuel until the meter is blue, and then it will slow down time and allow you to cut enemies apart, but some enemies you will have to damage normally until they glow blue before you can cut them.
You can also often activate blade mode as a finisher when the screen goes into slow motion during normal combos, or when doing stealth attack, or if the big Kanji appears.
Omg seeing this upload just made my whole day! 💖⚡️
That's so sweet omg
@@WhimsyPsyche Ty! 😊😊😊
3.14 hell yeah whimsy out did yourself 🙌🙌 it's like John woo crossed with RuPaul's Drag race what a joy 🤘 thank you for all the joy & entertainment 🙏🌻🐝
15:47 Perfect summary of the awkward smiles the bosses in the game give 🤣
🎵A stranger I remainnnnnnnnnnn🎵
I love that they implemented a proper Codec system in this despite it being a fast paced action game. In the MGS games, Codec goes downhill after 3, unfortunately. I especially love Doktor's segments, they really go into nerdy tech detail about how cyborgs work, transhumanism etc.
So glad to catch up to these after mgs4! this game is a blast, hope you enjoy
Ahh! I was waiting for this!
Yeah! Mistral cosplay at the end.... 😎
I'm so happy to be back in the comment as well!
Alright!
I'm all caught up with your Metal Gear series!
This one is just straight up fun!
Who cares if it's canon or not
It's a fan service game for all the real Metal Gear fans who wanted to play as a Cyborg Ninja......... Ever since i saw Gray Fox!!! I wanted to play as a cyborg ninja!
And that's what this game is for!
honestly this mgs game is the most over the top and thats what makes it so much fun for me
I agree!!
This game upon release had a GrayFox skin and sword available from pre order.
MGRR IS canon. Whoever said the game is not canon is a fool.
Hideo Kojima?
@FLStyle Approved this game and was consulted.
@@FLStyle Has never said anything about Rising not being canon, people just choose to interpret his words about it being a spinoff this way for whatever reason.
@@FLStyle Getting rid of David Hayter absolutely makes one a fool.
It’s the same voice actor for Raiden!
@16:23
This game takes place 4 years after the events of MGS 4
The secret to parry almost every attack is to NOT continually pressing in the direction of the enemies when attacking.
Instead repeat this sequence very quickly during combat:
1 - Push the move stick in the direction of an enemy and release it.
2 - Press the attack button.
What this will do is, if that enemy attcks you it will parry his attack, otherwise it will just attack the enemy normally.
This game is fun when you get the hang od the combat system, but I don't think the story is canon to the MGS series.
Yes this is what I realized and explain as well at 2:25:31 ! Takes a bit of time to figure it out for sure!
I finished this game since last year! Man it’s so tough, harder and so much crazy shit!
Waiting for you to play this ,thankyou ❤
Thank you so much for your patience ❤
Rising takes place four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4
I seldomly managed to cut of the arm.
I am lighting, the rain transformed 😊
BACK TO METAL GEAR!!! HELL YEAH!!!
