I've gotten quite a few comments about the loud sound at 33:22, I thought the onscreen warning would be enough but I wasn't thinking about people who were just listening to the video. I've gone ahead and removed the part of the video with it in youtube's built in editor, but it may take a while for the change to take effect. Sorry everyone.
In r-04, in the lobby area, the launchers that are hiding behind the glass will be smashed instead of slashed when using the wooden sword so that's a nice detail.
at 18:49 the reason there are less missiles when jumping is because the game wants to put the missiles right in front of you to have you avoid them, but when you're in the air the game cant find any pathing for your character from the side of the building so it waits till you're on the "ground" again
I used to say that my weapon is a tool of justice. Not a weapon, but a way to bring back those old fashioned values upon which we used to rely... *But this. Is a wooden sword.*
Yes. I actually did a sword run on Revengance, quite possibly one of the most annoying but fun challenges ever, each attempt for Jetstream Sam was worth 30 minutes
When I tried doing Armstrong on revengeance for the first time, I beat the second phase after buying the white suit because apparently the health things help you reach the normally unobtainable damage to raiden threshold of like 400% I think
26:29 For this combo, usually I'd just insert a dodge between the second and third slashes, since Sam's sheathing animation provides ample time to get out of the blocking animation, and move to his side or back. This would do away with the waiting time that normally comes with blocking the third/fourth slashes as well, so you can get a little bit more damage in during the time span. 27:55 (PTSD from installing Enhanced Sam mods) Does parrying even have any meaning anymore........ Also, who could forget Ripper mode and its glorious ability to send Raiden flying with the Pole-arm or the aerial kick attack.
This game is such a masterpiece. Players are finding new skips and strats to get around everything to this day. I can't wait to suffer and do the wooden sword run myself (imma miss getting electrolytes and using the scissor blades ngl)
MGR fun fact: during the Monsoon fight if you deal too much damage right after he throws things at you, you'll skip the part where he launches his arm at you (the cutscene that says "I have won this") making him instead attacking with the vehicles. Second MGR fun fact: during Armstrong's first phase you can actually trigger the other phase just by staying alive for something like 2 30 minutes
Since you didn't mention it here, I just wanted to add another fun Sundowner fact: If you just spam triangle between those two codec sequences, there's a good chance you'll be able to send his body comically flying off the building. It's especially funny to do it using his own weapon.
i loved the sam fight with wooden sword, i don't remember how long it took me to beat but, being that it's a test of your swordsmanship in both gameplay and story, it felt so good not just to best him, but to style on him. i even uploaded it
After playing the game for like 400 hours it shocked me to see how many fun facts I actually found on my own but the rest of the community was already aware of for very long.
23:19 I'm pretty sure this is because Sundowner is just frozen in the air. If you look at 23:04, his body falls the moment the final swing connects. However with the wooden sword his body just stays there. There's no footage of this in the video but if you can test it yourself to see the comparison. I cant find his body afterwards though so I'm assuming it just disappears like a normal enemy. Either that or I'm blind.
Glad to see more metal gear rising videos recently, cuz i love this game so much, and it brought me to the metal gear solid series, rn completing mgsv phantom pain (which i want to 100%), you were one of the people i watched first to do a challange in metal gear rising cuz i couldn't find a better one and rewatched it 3 times :D
Funniest part of it is that its damage goes down when you upgrade it, but its instakill (yes, this is a feature of it, though it prob doesn't work on bosses) chance goes up.
When Armstrong catches the sword to break, if it's the wooden sword he should just say "fuck it, lets do this!" and let go of it. Congrats, now you have to do the hardest phase of the hardest boss with the fucking stick.
your average anime opening followed by your anime opening showing off all the characters and their events through the story. this is better than the "I murdered my entire family" followed by a beautiful blue sky and birds migrating to the north
I feel your pain on the Sam fight. I haven't done the entire game with the wooden sword, but I did beat Sam on Revengeance difficulty, hitless, using the wooden sword, with no consumables or secondaries, and I did the usual second phase instead of perfect parrying the charge. It was painful, but finishing it was SO worth it! Took about fifteen minutes on my winning attempt. EDIT: Forgot to say, I also didn't use ripper mode
Fun Metal Gear Rising Fact: If you ninja run up Excelcsius on the correct angle you can accidentally jump into the fire pit of the arena. Dont worry if you run straight you'll be fine
34:50 This happened to my brother when we were playing, and Raiden got stuck on 0% health during the QTE? And afterwards, once we entered the final phase, he immediately died before letting us restart in phase 3. It was weird
Fun facts about the games enemy's that I believe are true: Ray's missiles can be cut for health, Bladewolf isn't that hard when you pop ripper then constantly hit, You can stun lock Mistral and constantly hit her in blade mode, Raptors EMPs are dodgeable, Massiffs are the slowest hitting enemies, giving you lots of time to Parry, Grad's arent actually that crazy if you keep your cool, Hammerheads can be defeated by constantly jumping up to them, Normal/basic enemies are cuttable in blade mode, Medium enemies can be stunned by hitting their hand in blade mode, Hammer enemies can't be stunned, Tripods are also capable of being stun locked, Sliders are really weak, Fenrirs are more likely to move than Sam is to dodge in phase 1, the reason being its a dink. Monsoon's air attack can be blocked and used to stun him without an EMP, Shield enemies are easy to defeat with ripper mode, Gekkos are easily stunnable with ripper mode, Sundowner is capable of being beaten in just over a minute (if you're good enough), Sam is also beatable in just over a minute and a half, Excelsus can't kill you at 0.1% health despite you not being able to safely block it, and Armstrong isn't the hardest boss if you have a fully upgraded Murasama and infinite fuel cells for ripper
11:20 I want to add another Fun Metal Gear Rising Fact in the tripod section: In Very hard and Revengence, entering the vent at the end gives you a No-damage bonus. But in lower difficulties, doing the same won't. Instead, you have to trigger the alert, and avoid taking hits before entering the vent to get the no-damage tag, which makes this sections a bit harder in lower difficulties. You can trigger the alert by pressing Y in front of one of the guard.
I was thinking of doing this challenge myself, but on a semi-new game, basically just going through the game with minimal upgrades, getting wooden sword and then downgrading its damage with no other upgrades on hard, not sure if I'll be able to actually make a video out of it though. Loved this video though. 16:05 this part also reminded me of something that I somehow completely forgot about during the Monsoon fight, this is going to help me so much getting the Stormbringer achievement, I was always trying to just evade it but got hit by some stray explosion hitboxes that remained for a deceivingly long time. I remember blocking it in my very first playthrough (Keyboard + mouse, because I didn't have a controller at the time), but somehow forgot about it.
28:02 Ah yes the kill you whenever he feels like it move. Like sometimes you straight up die when he sheaths his sword(the frame the rocks spawn in the ground) with no reaction time lol
I think the game freezes at the end of jetstream sam's death is because jetstream sam drops his sword and it becomes a real physics object which then gets stuck in the rock and glitches, you can know the sword collides with other objects because if you land jetstream sword correctly on a rock or crate at the phase 2 start, it actually collides and breaks the rock or crate
Fun Metal Gear Rising Fact #37 Doing the konami code (⬆⬆⬇⬇⬅➡⬅➡⚫✖) on the title sceen unlocks Revengeance difficulty and makes Raiden say Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

33:35 I've used this a lot on very hard but I think it has to do with not taking damage for curtain amount of time. As I get it quite often and it happens mostly after not taking damage for a while. It may also depend on damage to Armstrong himself as usually I punch him a lot at this part, but that is just my experience
for some reason i really enjoy watching challenge videos of games i know absolutely nothing about and having that be my first experience. in a way, it kind of shows the full extents of the mechanics of a game and how far someone can humanely push something
I just figured out the other day, if you have the blue wig (Infinite fuel cells) And do the Ripper blade mode thing, You can stay in a state of extremly slow time which makes pretty much EVERY fight in the game stupid easy. Monsoon is immune to it though since ripper mode cannot be turned off the entire fight, thus doing the exploit is impossible on monsoon.
Iunno if anyone told you this, but the reason why the 4th Sam combo is not parryable is cause he does explosive unsheathe attack at the end. Any of explosive iai attacks cause you heavy knockback, similar to Armstrong attacks, and are not parryable. Overall very insightful video into the game mechanics, thank you.
I can definitely see the Max0r inspired style, and I don't mean that in a bad way because your own style overshadows that in a fantastic way. You hit the nail on the fucking head here.
28:36 i have a fun fact of my own. if you keep holding to charge the sword sheath attack and do the finisher on sam, your sword will be invisible for the cutscene and blade mode parts of the finisher
I love how the metal gears in this game are supposed to be made of the latest and greatest armor plating, yet are done in by a twink with a fancy stick
Bit off topic but that use of Find Your Flame at the beginning just goes to show Frontiers and this games soundtrack could probably be swapped over and still fit perfectly

With how many time you can't cut inanimate objects with the wooden sword, it's weird that there are a few times were it just... works.
