And that's another reason why I ordered the gen 3. I almost pulled the trigger on a gen 4 until I started hearing about inferior materials used for the hammer mechanism. The price of the gen 4 was also less than the gen 3 which was quite telling. The main issue on the gen 3 is the collet problem but I can definitely live with that.
Thanks for the video and keep up the good work! Sometimes I think it’s splitting hairs over a matter of a second in terms of speed tests. Each tool can have its variances as well. That being said, I would have expected more from the new Gen 4 considering its on par (or inferior) to a tool that’s multiple years old. You would think they would at least “one up” their prior Gen but apparently that’s not what they were after.
gen 3 was amazing for its time but theres no denying it had a major design flaw in that collet that couldnt hold its bits. but i rarely use it for spade bits anyway as i dont like swapping bits out all the time so use the drill driver for that kind of thing but the chuck on the gen 3 drops its bits too
Tools are similar to guns as they have a slight wear in period. Should see an improvement in performance as the tool gets used a bit more. Not saying it will be significantly better but it will run a bit better
Another nice video of yours, I want to buy one of these two, I like the 4th generation LEDs, but according to your experience and criteria, which of the two do you choose?
I would invest in the new Gen 4 if possible battery technology if moving to forge, and that's what these tools are design to work best. However, if you find a good deal, you can't go wrong with a Gen 3
Gen 3 still a bit stronger but the gen 4 is updated. I have the gen 3 but the gen 4 looks better imo. Tri led lights with better ergonomics would be nice to have.
I'm positive the stacked lithium batteries will play a part in making the gen 4 perform better, im not buying anymore batteries until they release them thats for sure
I’m seeing a lot of mixed reviews with the GEN4. Tinker with tools the GEN 4 came out on top over the GEN 3 only slightly but still took it. Shop tool reviews the GEN4 is the only impact driver to ever break 550 foot pounds breakaway torque. Tool review zone the GEN four and the flex impact were dead even but GEN4 is more compact and comfortable to use which gives it an edge for me.Not to mention Milwaukee still running cylindrical cells flex was using stacked Lithium ion when stacked lithium is available On the M18 platform that’s gonna tip that scale.
@@steffendetrick9403 It’s interesting as well as I have seen all those videos too. Not sure if it comes down to manufacturing variances per unit or what but it’s definitely worth noting.
@@tonytrofe7137 Honestly I think it literally comes down to the tool being broken in or not. In some reviews they’re taking them straight out of the boxes they drive a few screws or a few holes and then give you their opinion/review maybe they got familiar with it a bit before they did the review. After 23 years I can tell you power tools need to be broken in. Perfect example tool review zone tested it(GEN4)against the GEN3 straight out of the box and it acted a little erratic during the review. Then almost 2 weeks later in another review he put it up against the flex and it went toe to toe with it because at that point it was broken in. I think people were just extremely eager to review it. The tools and the motors need to be broken in some more than others this is definitely not a new thing.
You did the temp test on the Gen 3 after the test on the Gen 4. To give context, you should have done the temp test on the Gen 4 again to see how much the temperatures cooled down.
Gen 4 should have at least some more power, disappointing the older model beats it. Clearly they are maxed out on battery platform. Still powerful impacts as always.
If there's only a little difference in power and speed then I really don't see the need for a upgrade. The only thing would persuade me Is the the new LED lighting
By being 2.2” wide instead of 2.3 (assuming all things held equal), the tool INSTANTLY loses 10% power (calculate area of two circles with 2.3” and 2.2” diameter). You can make it more efficient, but good luck making it more powerful. I think that’s what we’re seeing here. Milwaukee made the new tool more powerful, but the size difference took away a little more power than their added.
How in the world do you figure that something that is smaller can’t be more powerful??? Yes efficiency can be increased, but with newer technology, power can be increased just as well while decreasing the size…
What DeWalt would you suggest? I honestly wanted to buy a DeWalt but when I did research none were very good. If I buy a 20v DeWalt plus batteries and it's no more powerful than my M12? I don't recall ever seeing a comparison where DeWalt came very close to Milwaukee.
Gen 3 impact driver still available for $67 GREAT VALUE 👍 after the hack. www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-FUEL-18V-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-1-4-in-Hex-Impact-Driver-Tool-Only-2853-20/305059614
most milwaukee tools are made in China. I am rather surprised gen 4 is made in Vietnam. Yea, the power "difference" indicates there's really no point in getting the gen 4 if you already have gen 3. I am more curious about M12.
You might want to move on to a mid or a high torque you will be more productive faster and easieron the tool. These tools are designed for smaller screws lags.
@@toolhead147 I have a mid torque. Most of the time if I’m driving a lag we use pilot holes but even if I don’t I’ve just never had a problem with the 1/4” handling this task. Honestly if you have a good impact the only time I see it being a problem is if you’re driving more than a few at a time. But thanks
@@toolhead147 I ran the Gen3 for about a year. Sold it to a co-worker and upgraded to the Gen4. To me, they're basically the same, torque wise. Gen 3 is the BOSSMAN💯👊
