Can't buy any new gear, but love seeing what's out there. Thanks for a real-world, informed but normal talk about this cool new stuff. I appreciate you.
If you would have asked me 2 years ago, I would have said both Steam Deck and PlayStation Portal were a waste of money. Now I'm a dad, I can see why these things are so popular. After a long day, this kids in bed, the wife is watching her TV show, I can sit next to her and play whatever I want and still be in her company.
Bed Steam Deck Quad-Chin is real! Every once in a while the lighting is just right and you catch a glimpse of your reflection at the most flattering angle possible.
I appreciate you talking about these things without being a hype man and maintaining some rationality, it's very tiring watching channel after channel acting like these new devices are "must haves" and the older things are now somehow useless Thanks Jake! With that new Steam Deck, hopefully you don't have to raw dog anymore flights 😂
As much as I want a OLED steam deck, I may have to settle for the LCD model just to get that experience of playing my steam library on the go so i may pick one up over black friday if I have some money left over. Like you I'm surprised with how well the PS Portal is dong I didn't think many would buy into it but then again remote play is a dope feature.
I have quite a few TVs in the house so that’s not it. It’s nice to sit on the couch playing while the fam watches tv. Not to mention playing in the couch or in bed and not have to look at a tv screen. I ‘be just always liked the handheld experience. I have a backbone and can also play with an iPad and controller with remote but Portal is just so much better. It’s convenient: faster to pick up and play. It’s lighter with a larger screen than my phone and doesn’t waste my phone battery. It runs cool. It is a dedicated handheld experience with dual sense functions which feels much more comfortable to play than any handheld I’ve tried. It’s the Dad Station really. I guess there’s a lot of gamer dads who can easily snap this up. What’s genuinely shocking to me is the internet really wanted this portal device to fail and even when people like me said why we want it, people tried to tell us to use other cheaper options which we’ve already tried and doesn’t address what features and benefits we like about the portal.
I think of your kids or other half are watching TV and they want you in the room with them the PS portal would be great. That would be my reason to get it anyway.
I got the Portal yesterday and it's better than I expected. I work from home. 10 hour days, in the evening, with nothing to do and my PS5 a floor away. I've streamed from my phone (Galaxy S21), my tablet (Galaxy tab s9 Ultra), and an Odin Pro, and this is a significantly better experience. If you're someone who streams your PS5, then I'd highly recommend it.
This Portal is fun. I get tired of falling asleep in my bed, my phone is too small, I won’t use a tablet enough & it’s not fun to be in bed with a whole laptop. That being said, it’s for me. You drop so much content. You have nothing to apologize for.
I don’t need a steam deck oled. I want a steam deck oled. Upgrading from my 512LCD to the 512OLED. To me, it’s worth it because I’ve put hundreds of hours on my Steam deck. So ima sell the old and get the new
The only reason I still haven't picked up a PS5 is because they're still $500. Even after being out for 3 years I haven't seen a new one below $500 and the best used price I've seen was like $400. It's insane.
I think they dropped the ball with the PS Portal because it's cloud streaming, and because of the new headset and earbud thing that they're trying to pull. The PS5 "slim" revision didn't seem necessary to me and I think that they're really trying to milk it as much as possible due to the detachable disc drive that works with digital edition and the buying a stand separately thing.
Thanks, Jake, for the straightforward reviews. I'm still on the fence about the Steam Deck OLED. With a gaming laptop and a gaming PC I don't need the Steam Deck, but...
I understand that the PS Portal isn’t for everyone. Personally, I’m super excited for it. I hate that it doesn’t have Bluetooth… that seems ridiculous. I currently don’t have anything to remote play on. My laptop takes 15 minutes to turn on and my iPhone screen is cracked. I’d like to enjoy some handheld gaming but the games on Switch are always full priced. I subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium so I’ve got tons of free indies that are perfect for couch gaming while my wife watches TV.
Honestly kinda tempted to get the Portal just to be able to play my PS5 in bed. I could connect the controller to my iPad etc but a dedicated device is just easier.
Valve did basically say that a steam deck 2 is way far off and their focus is on updating the steam deck. I think its a great buy especially if you're into emulation.
Remote Play makes sense for those that have a singular TV in the household and others may want to watch "TV" on it. I was surprised as well, but then again, I loved my Vita and remote play was an option as well. Albeit on a smaller screen and having a different control scheme.
For me I feel like my normal Steam Deck is fine until a more powerful one comes out. PS5 is going to be a while no real need and few games I want to play that I don’t play elsewhere
For me I’m moving between homes and the portal let’s me play high end looking games in portable without needing to bring my ps5 places. Also there’s games I own on ps5 that I feel like I have a chance to finish in portable. Waiting on switch 2 instead of steam deck tho

But I can see where it makes sense, I mean a backbone is $100, this is $100 more and it has a much larger screen than a phone and much more ergonomic because it’s basically just a controller. A lot more practical than using a dual sense with Bluetooth to a phone because then you have to find a comfortable place to prop up the phone, especially if you’re trying to lay down and relax or something(I’ve had this issue).
