Agreed. My friend has a steam deck and has emulators for EVERYTHING on there, PS1, gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, Nintendo DS, Gameboy, you name it. My parents bought a GameCube and Xbox 360 for the family when I was a kid. I played them a little but I was very busy and my parents had a lot of control over how much we gamed. Now that I am an adult I never really ended up buying a console cause I was poor and busy trying to get a bachelors degree in biochemistry. Now that I got an ok job and saved up my money, I realized I didn’t have anything to do and had few friends. One friend I met at work pulled out his steam deck and it was the first time I’d seen the thing. My mind was blown. Im not typically an impulsive person, but a week or so later I had my own steam deck OLED. Now I’m playing all the games that were exclusive on all the other platforms that I always wanted to play. I’m emulating my old games from my GameCube. It’s 10000% the best entertainment buy of my entire life.
Yeap, although nice been emulating Switch on my Deck fine, but that also because I only have a Switch Lite and its screen is too small, not worth getting another with Switch 2 round the corner.
The Switch 2 will probably be backwards compatible with the Switch 1 which is basically 99% confirmed, so if you don't have a Switch yet I would buy the Switch 2 and buy a Steam deck and then you can basically play every game there is, especially if you use emulators on the Steam deck
@@Sly2Cooper There is indeed no reason to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series or S consoles now that the Steam deck is here, but the Switch 2 will certainly have reasons to buy it because not only does Nintendo have great games, all Switch 1 games will be backwards compatible. but nintendo is never going to go cross platform because they don't have to, the Switch Generation was more profitable than every other nintendo console generations combined.
Why buy a steam deck tho when the Ally X, Legion Go and claw are all more powerful than it and aren't limited to certain games not being compatible with it?
@@joopvanhedel1372 the steam deck doesn't compare to a xbox or ps5. To pretend it does is dumb. (the ratchet references he used to infer steam deck was on par..... Problem of Nintendo is that their consoles on paper have big number of sold but less sold games and also their consoles selling at spikes. Switch is first their console that outselling Playstation longterm, WiiU, DS and DS3 had even worse selling than Xbox.
The switch and the steam deck are the consoles I use the most. The ps5 barely has any exclusives and I prefer having the mobility of the switch and steam decks. Nintendo also has so many ips, it’s insane.
Specially if you buy the Switch Lite. Its actually portable unlike the Steam Deck that is a giant brick. As much as i understand the points and where they come from, i cant help but shake the feeling that people still dont give the love that the Switch deserves. Funnily enough, it´s very popular in japan, the bastion of gaming.
Overall I prefer my switch lite over the deck just because its not as big and heavy. Also the xbox series x is really nice due to it being backwards compatible with all previes xbox consoles. I know backwards compatibility isn't a selling point for most but xbox emulation barely works on pc so i enjoy the console for that.
@@rafaelf.9246 I really don’t get this “it’s more portable” discussion. I think of the steam deck as just a handheld console with its sole purpose being to play games you have on steam. I wouldn't really call it a PC since steam is the only thing on there you can use unless you download the other stuff and emulation and all that.
I think console players are only looking at cost of a PC short term. Because that's what consoles are; a short term generational purchase from companies that tend to exploit them in other ways. PC on the other hand is a long term investment. Its open and modular design allow for a platform to evolve and be upgraded organically. The thing is, you don't spend money on subscription, you don't spend money on getting online, you never spend extra money on games with marked-up prices (Sony-/Microsoft- or Nintendo- tax), You don't need to buy HD remasters of your favorite games (because there are no "generations" and you can always bump up resolution & settings in older games or download visual mods for them). If you don't play the latest games they often come on sale extremely cheap. And ultimately, you keep your games for A VERY LONG TIME (I have games from 20 years ago on Steam... and emulation covers my gaming childhood in the 80's and 90's). The Steam Deck is THE best entry-point into PC gaming, it's a simple and cheap console-like purchase, and it will probably spark interest of getting into PC gaming in the future. And people should go that route, I have done some calculations and PC has actually been A LOT cheaper than consoles over time. (also keep in mind that 2000-4000$ PCs are premium PCs with often 200% or even 300% of console performance, you can generally build a console-like PC for around 900-1200$)
Straight facts my man. Plus having a capable computer opens the door to doing more taxing non-gaming tasks and just improving computer related productivity in general.
A console like pc for 900 to 1200$ that will be obselete in 5 years because game devs KEEP making shitty unoptimized game that requires dlssx 6.7 to run at 30 fps(144p upscaled to 720p), yes i understand that's not the PCs fault, but it's still a truth you have to accept when buying a pc nowadays And steamdeck which is pretty powerful for it's size i must admit, but it's not an international product and it will cost a crazy amount in many countries Compare that to a console that will last it's full 7 years easily without needing upgrades(sadly consoles have the issue where every game dev seems to care only about graphics and forget the frames, resulting in a beautiful game that runs at 30/60 fps) I myself have a ps5 because i already had a tv and i wanted something to use with my brother without needing to worry whether my brother will mess it up, so a ps5 seemed like a great option I am saving up for a pc currently, but that's months away, especially with how a fucking 4060 costs like 500$ in my country
Unfortunately there is not active anti-cheat support on Linux, but yes this is only for multiplayer games. Where this device shines is the single player, immersive experiences.
Those companies will eventually come around as PC handhelds and PC gaming in general continues to grow. The bigger the Linux player base gets, the harder it is to ignore.
I heard mention on the WAN show that microsoft was looking at moving the security layer where the anti-cheats usually are out of the kernal. Cant say how accurate the claim is but it'd improve compatability if it happens.
$1k is insane for a console. Not a sony guy, so I genuinely thought it was just about $700 (around £500) but £700 Is actually ridiculous, and insane...
4:27 also if you only use a tv for video gaming and don't watch 'live' television you don't need a licence. My experience with living in the UK with a tv for just gaming. Now I live in Australia where TV licence doesn't exist.
Can confirm. I went the lenovo legion go route to play windows 11 games and absolutely no regrets. I wholeheartedly agree with the video when you state "why you fell in love with games in the first place'. This was it. Now, my pc, ps5 and xbox collect dust :)
PCs are not expensive compared to consoles. For one, there's no subscription just to play online, or a fee to change your username, stuff like that. Games are also massively cheaper, with blowout deals all the time. And you can easily get a capable gaming PC for $700-800 that will not only rival the PS5 pro, but be better anyway. PCs also just have way more features, and you can mod your games with ease and get more replayability from your entire library. Genuinely, consoles have no reason to exist. Steam Deck is awesome though, but that is just a handheld PC after all.
And gaming PC actually last longer for years, take a look at the RX 5700 XT + Ryzen 3600x combo, runs every modern game at 1440p smoothly. I rather pay 600$ on a gaming PC where it take years to update my specs, has freedom, ultrawide, K&M with low input lag and has mods or good exclusives.
@@Lestibournes Just because consoles are simpler than PCs doesn't mean PCs are complicated. They're still pretty simple, basically everyone knows how to use one. If you don't know how to navigate Windows, you likely won't know how to navigate a console's dashboard.

I completely agree with you, but I'm in South Africa. So PCs are even MORE expensive and Steam Decks are overpriced as hell and were only available recently, so a PS5 just met every use case I had, besides like you said, nothing is exclusive really so its not like I've been hurting for games. I'd totally get one if I had the disposable income, but I always think why not just buy the game on PS5/Switch instead. There are rumors of Microsoft creating a handheld, maybe they can actually compete on that front.
Man every time I hear people complain about “ps5 has no games” then bring pc ports into the reasons is just sad man. Can people just stop being so pathetic that games being more accessible is somehow a issue now
No because if every game is available on every platform we will have no competition. Competition between companies brings us great games. We got Forza because Sony had Gran Turismo. We got killzone and Resistance because Microsoft had halo etc etc.
@@Tougebeat My guy consoles exclusives being on PC has no impact on the other consoles. How would gran turismo being on PC impact forza series? If anything we will see improvement since Forza is coasting as the only good racing series on pc right now, gran turismo might actually improve the games
Way to ignore WIi that stomped the absolute shit out of both consoles with their casual appeal. I hated that time in gaming because people were so rabid about their favorite console causing even bigger divide in gaming. Now Epic Games Store is buying up exclusives trying to fan the flames again to fight a console war on the PC market. Also Rockstar being the biggest douchenozzle with their launcher as well. Gaming is better than it has ever been but some companies are trying to crab drag us back to the bullshit era. Steam Deck is amazing and if Valve really does allow ROG Ally (and other handhelds) to SteamOS, the gamers are the winners. Imagine the functionality of the Deck with better hardware. PC gamers are eating so well right now and the cooking is getting better.
Just received mine this week taking advantage of the ongoing sale. I travel a lot due to work so I can't lay my ps5 often, so this is the most excited I been about gaming in a while, been having a blast playing on emulators and a fee games I had on my steam account!! My fight was in the sixth gen 👴 Do teens now still care enough about video games to argue which PS/Xbox is better? Looking from the outside in i find it hard to believe, since every game people play now is multiplatform
I disagree that its a console though and with Google-Fu you too can find Valve saying the same shit; They hate The Deck being called a "console" and corrected the interviewer "it's a Portable Mini-PC" because it really is and nothing more. That's like calling the Game Boy Player a console when its really not.
Unfortunately, the Steamdeck OS is a buggy mess. 50% of your play sessions will turn into 3 hour trouble shooting sessions trying to get your steamdeck to do something it did fine a day earlier.
i don’t even play my PS5 anymore honestly worst investment made. I love my steam deck I’ve modified it and done so much internal customization, emulation , ran native Nintendo pc ports, and there’s ways to make games run with some thorough research and modifications.
Controversial I know but the Deck might be my most favorite console of all time. I’ve also got a PS5 but barely use it, I’ve been having so much fun with the Deck revisiting older games as well as enjoying newer titles. The OLED screen is amazing, desktop mode to tinker with things, Steam sales are far superior to the console sales, it feels great to play in your hands. I can’t say I’ve been impressed so far this current gen, recently released Astro Bot was superb but the lack of decent exclusive titles from both Microsoft and Sony has been disappointing. The Steam Deck for me has been a revelation, especially since I seem to have so little chill time these days.
i hate that people dog on the switch for its power (stop using MK1 as a example! Doom eternal and wolfenstien 2 are amazing examples!). its just annoying to me for some reason.
So Switch Doom runs at 1080p 60 fps? Because on other systems it does. For the same price. Switch games look worse, run worse, but somehow cost the same.
My laptop cost me 900 dollars which also got a freaking screen and is better than both consoles and I can eventually play all console games on PC and mod them all. I find consoles pretty expensive compared to total pros of PC.
I've bought more games for my Switch since it came out than I have for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X combined. The only other games left to come out this year that I'm interested in are Switch games too... 🤷♂
Yep. I got shot of my ps5 last year to get a deck and never looked back. Between that and a Switch I’m sorted - mind you Deck has been amazing for emulation! Wish I could afford an OLED deck but the LCD gets the job done
PC is quite a bit more expensive for its hardware value compared to console hardware value. That's why. It's all in comparison. A $1000(give or take a couple hundred) PC is approximately equivalent to a $500 console for similar performance. PCs can be as cheap and crappy or as expensive and powerful as you want, but when it comes to value vs. a console for gaming, it's quite expensive. This is all just hardware value, by the way. There's arguments about software and subscription prices as well, which are cheaper on PC.
@sawdust8691 Yeah, but it's not like you have to build a completely new PC every few years. You can even buy used parts if you want to. I built my PC in 2017 and upgraded here and there. Much cheaper than buying a PS4 Pro, then a PS5, and then a PS5 Pro.

Many developers do take it specifically into account though. All those "Steam Deck Verified" games have Steam Deck specific settings so it's plug and play like on a console.
I find this whole console wars idiotic. I just play my Nintendo every now and then and put it away. These entities do not care about anyone but just the bottom line.
In response to the Switch footage of Mortal Kombat, there's 100% better looking games on Switch (no, I'm not saying the Switch has graphical masterpieces, this is just a case of poor optimization) Also you weren't using the PS5 vertical stand on right.

while i agree that Series X did not put up a good fight (unless you wanna use your old backwards compatible discs on it) , i still believe at 299 USD a Series S as a Gamepass Machine or a Machine where you buy Digital XBOX Play Anywhere games on (which means you can then play them on PC) is still very much worth it. i grew up a PlayStation fan and had everything up to PS4 (still use my PS4 Slim for family) but ultimately Series S will be the final modernized console i'll ever own. after this it will be me going to Gaming PC/SteamDeck and Retro consoles (up to 7th gen) Edit - also to people who say a Gaming PC is more expensive : 1. we don't have to pay to play games online. so that's a huge yearly savings for us. 2. we don't have to deal with 1 company's ecosystem , we can use Steam Sales , GoG Sales , Epic Store sales , etc etc you get the idea. 3. we don't have stupid censorship on PC 4. we get far more value in our investment as not only with a PC you can do anything you want that isn't even Gaming. but even with Gaming you are NOT locked to a generation , wanna play a 6th gen game that also has a PC port? YOU CAN. wanna play an MS-DOS game? you can. wanna play 7th gen games like original Assassins Creed or FF13 without waiting for remasters or ports or even emulation? you can. wanna play the latest games? you also can. so just with that alone we're getting the value of like 8 different consoles on top of each other , so stop with the "PC is expensive" b-s. i haven't even touched up on the fact that there's a LOT of emulation going on with PC. the only "con" you can find on a PC is trouble shooting in case you (or Windows) destroy something. but even then there's a plethora of information and knowledge and even RUclips videos available to you to fix said problems. if one part fails 9 times out of 10 it won't kill anything else and you can replace that one part instead of buying a whole system again. and you won't even need repair shops for this. in USA i see Microcenters everywhere on internet where they give you the ultimate deals on hardware too. use that.
I started with ps2, then xbox 360, then ps4, now both current gen consoles without much impressing me. So as someone with no brand loyalty heres the thing. Either the next xbox is basically a high powered steam deck or I'm switching to pc for the rest of my years. Microsoft being the company that they are, are uniquely capable of pulling that off, and it might be their only option because of the digital library people built on ps4 beating xbox down this gen. I'd love to see the comeback, and steam deck type consoles are maybe the only viable future of consoles at these prices.
Proton and enabling Proton settings on games make it all so much better - all they need to do is get the Anti Cheat kernel handling down for more titles
The deck is the only computer worth buying as a gamer. Everything is just insanely clean. I can go from playing Black Myth Wukong on steam to going in to desktop and adding the .exe file for the obscure Slendytubbies 3 as a custom game. I can dock it on a $40 dock made by the king of chargers, Anker and use it as a full arch Linux desktop. I can also bring that dock down to my living room and hook up 2 $15 wireless anbernic P01 controllers to it because I can use any controller I want on it.
You can also stream games from steam or third party applications ( sunshine and moonlight) over the wifi, making your PC do all the hard work and easily getting 60+ frames on your steam deck cause you can lighten the load on the pc making it run at 720 or 900p or not to mention the 5 to 6+ hours runtime on the deck. It's a nice way to game if you are in the house and you don't need to install the massive games into the steam deck as well
Gotta tell ya, I'm a happy owner of a few retro consoles and currently in love with the RG556. But as soon as I have the money, I'm getting myself the Deck. The games it won't be able to run, I'll stream from my mid tier PC, good enough for most 1080p games.
I love my PS Portal, wired it in U.K. and completed God of War while travelling across Europe (France, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic & Poland). Really fun, you can basically play any game at any time. A lot of them can be played co-op too, just link a playstation, xbox or switch controller up to the deck and you're good. I’m happy with mine.
the only thing holding it back is certain games refuse to make their game linux compatable.
Yup, I've got the same thing on mine. Hell, I even have Windows 98 SE emulated on mine so I could play games I played 30 years ago. 😂
Nintendo Switch and Steam are the only 2 I need that's it.
Well, you can technically play switch games on the steam deck. It's not legal or recommended but they run better on the deck.
It's the reason not to restrain yourself with Nintendo handhelds at all.
Steam games are playable not only on Steamdeck.

@@VirtuaCop2enjoyer I agree.
He refers to it as a console for the ease of use and physical shape. But he called it "Basically a handheld PC"
Its pretty much a console in gaming mode and a pc in desktop mode. A hybrid if you must.
I think of the steam deck as just a handheld console with its sole purpose being to play games you have on steam. I wouldn't really call it a PC since steam is the only thing on there you can use unless you download the other stuff and emulation and all that.
Can dock a Steam Deck to connect to a TV and play with a wireless controller. Just like Switch.

And steamdeck which is pretty powerful for it's size i must admit, but it's not an international product and it will cost a crazy amount in many countries
Compare that to a console that will last it's full 7 years easily without needing upgrades(sadly consoles have the issue where every game dev seems to care only about graphics and forget the frames, resulting in a beautiful game that runs at 30/60 fps)

That's it, its on their website, although they do name RUclips etc to try and scare you but the same cavate applies, and seriously, who tf watches live tv on RUclips? So if you use it for games and (non live tv) video streaming you'll be absolutely fine.
while i agree that Series X did not put up a good fight (unless you wanna use your old backwards compatible discs on it) , i still believe at 299 USD a Series S as a Gamepass Machine or a Machine where you buy Digital XBOX Play Anywhere games on (which means you can then play them on PC) is still very much worth it.
i grew up a PlayStation fan and had everything up to PS4 (still use my PS4 Slim for family) but ultimately Series S will be the final modernized console i'll ever own. after this it will be me going to Gaming PC/SteamDeck and Retro consoles (up to 7th gen)
Edit - also to people who say a Gaming PC is more expensive :
1. we don't have to pay to play games online. so that's a huge yearly savings for us.
2. we don't have to deal with 1 company's ecosystem , we can use Steam Sales , GoG Sales , Epic Store sales , etc etc you get the idea.
3. we don't have stupid censorship on PC
4. we get far more value in our investment as not only with a PC you can do anything you want that isn't even Gaming. but even with Gaming you are NOT locked to a generation , wanna play a 6th gen game that also has a PC port? YOU CAN. wanna play an MS-DOS game? you can. wanna play 7th gen games like original Assassins Creed or FF13 without waiting for remasters or ports or even emulation? you can. wanna play the latest games? you also can. so just with that alone we're getting the value of like 8 different consoles on top of each other , so stop with the "PC is expensive" b-s. i haven't even touched up on the fact that there's a LOT of emulation going on with PC.
the only "con" you can find on a PC is trouble shooting in case you (or Windows) destroy something. but even then there's a plethora of information and knowledge and even RUclips videos available to you to fix said problems. if one part fails 9 times out of 10 it won't kill anything else and you can replace that one part instead of buying a whole system again. and you won't even need repair shops for this. in USA i see Microcenters everywhere on internet where they give you the ultimate deals on hardware too.

A PC port got leaked a while ago and pirates have made it a mostly playable experience
Proton and enabling Proton settings on games make it all so much better - all they need to do is get the Anti Cheat kernel handling down for more titles
That's something that devs of the games need to figure out, if it could be done in the OS side it would have been done years ago
Never Ever believe someone criticising PS5 and Owns it at the same time 🗿
The deck is the only computer worth buying as a gamer.
Now I constantly use it I’m amazed that adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are supported on it. It’s Sony most successful game accessory ever.
Every month more than a dozen games are released on PS5. He is just used to for Sony releasing
spectacular games, guess what, they need time to cook to cook it well, there are great 3rd party publishers as well.
''ONE game I dont know why, I bought the PS5 with no GAMES to buy’' 😭
We need a Playstation 6 contender.
They have the Operative Sistem: SteamOS.
They have the retro compatible layer: Proton.
They have the have Native perfect API: Vulkan
They have a good Controller: SteamController
They have the best Interface: Steam
They have great Drivers for AMD APUs
I hope VALVe do a step forward and make public they plans of SteamBox.
Competition might actually pressure them to innovate. Itd be amazing to have more freedom of control, like a desktop mode.
Good edited video, it was kinda funny in the beginning doe with a PlayStation and Xbox army battle 😅😅
