  • In this video I talk about graphics in games. Graphics are and always will be important, because I mean, without them we wouldn't see anything. Graphics allow develops to express their creativity making all kinds of amazing things. The problem is, the industry is becoming way too obsessed with making things as close to realistic as possible, and it's causing problems.

Someone made joke about Baldur's Gate 3's file size like "what could possibly justify the 200 GB file size, 4k hair textures? lolol"
I'm just sitting there like "There are quite literally millions of lines of dialogue in high quality audio, also the game itself has a billion lines of code that make it so you can take a BUNCH of different routes to get a reasonable conclusion to every quest. This isn't Fallout 3/4 where an NPC is just fucking IMMUNE because they're absolutely critical to the code's survival."

      @NicholasBrakespear 3 дня назад

@@a_level_70_elite_raccoon "There are quite literally millions of lines of dialogue in high quality audio, also the game itself has a billion lines of code"
That's the thing though... Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and the best written RPG ever - Planescape: Torment - didn't really need full voice acting. Just a sprinkle here and there so the player had a character's voice in their head. This was a highly efficient method of storytelling; not only allowing players to read through lengthy dialogue exchanges at their own pace, without feeling the need to "skip" the actual voice acted sequence, but allowing the developers to write and program dialogue trees with far greater speed (since adjustments didn't need to bounce back and forth and require additional studio sessions).
As for the "billion lines of code" - speaking as someone developing a game where you can talk to any character and manually ask them about topics, which involves an internal drop-through of multiple sets of topics (specific quest stage responses, character-specific responses, region-specific responses, common responses, all with potential splitters for gender and class)... code is tiny. It's just text.
In fact, here's a good example - I put my books in my game, readable in-game. I have a 600 page novel, and it takes up... 3.25MBs. And that's including the code for the table of contents, and the cover images.
The obsession with fully-voiced characters damaged games as much as the obsession with cutting edge visuals - not only drastically increasing the install size, but also seriously impacting the development process, and stifling innovation in the genre.

ngl the graphical limitation pushed devs to develop an art style for a game. In Ds1 the emptiness of the world helps set the mood of the Golden era long gone, the world is dead and hangs on strings. while DS3 just throws trash and barrels everywhere as if some battle took place even in a random village 5 minutes ago. I love ds3 but sometimes less means more, and they seem to go back to it in DLCs

    • @NicholasBrakespear

Agree - DS3 was visually disappointing. The eerie stillness of a doomed world was totally missing; replaced with constant clutter and activity. And in terms of negative space, and the signal to noise ratio... the visuals were awful. Technically competent, but in terms of artistic merit, there was no focus, just "stuff" everywhere.

Gonna be real here,Realism aren't ruining Video games
Poor expectations,Bad video games and Massive bloated budgets are.
There are equally bad games with great realistic visuals as much as bad awful games with great art style.
But i don't see anyone blaming those nor remotely talks about those But sure lets all blame realism in video games when in reality it's never the visuals that was the major issue. It's always the budget and how bad the actual game really is and people's expectations.
Like would you go around and say "Insert any realistic simulation game here" is crap because it's realistic and don't have an art style and the game play is boring while fully aware the game isn't made for you to begin with ?
There are great games on every types and I like me some slow paced action/even walking sim games with realistic visuals and everything so long as the Story is good
as much as I like some good ol fashion high octane action games with huge emphasis on game play, combat and has a distinct art style, People can enjoy both things and that's fine.

I grew up with Playstation all my life, I had the original XBOX, the PS3 and the PS4 and only recently did I get a Nintendo Switch and I've never been the same. I'm actually PLAYING games instead of running to a mission to watch a cutscene, only for me to run again to the next destination.
I still enjoy my Uncharteds, and God of Wars, but now only as a kind of 'privilege' thing in the sense that if I ever just wanna play casually. I mean I've only owned Breath of The Wild for less than a year and I got three times the playtime compared to all my PS4 games combined that I've owned for years.

Same goes for that weird "You are leaving the mission area!" panic attack, that some modern open-world games suffer from. It's one of those really basic - but very impactful - failings that somehow were considered less important than adding more and more detail in other areas.

I've been saying same for years. There are many games that benefits from beautifully detailed graphic fidelity, I believe. That being said I really can't think of any except read dead redemption 2 where detail matters. All the rest of them could be swapped for stylized graphics and it would change a thing be it GTA or call of duty.
I hate graphical fidelity it's bloat at this point, but I'm glad that theres plenty of Indy devs that are successful and eventually they will cross into a double A with some kind of art style that beautiful, stylized, easy to run and work on.

  • @itstommymate
    @itstommymate 12 дней назад +1

The statement that every game that more game should use stylised graphics can lead to the same issue. There are only so many styles we can do sooner or later we will just run out of ideas of what kind of styles we can do. Another thing I want to say is I wish games really took their time in perfecting the gameplay of a video game and taking their time on graphics after, for I'd like to have a very good product of a fun game with great quality life, rather than spending more time on garbage tech demos. Crysis 3 is one of my favourite video games of all time. It has graphics WAY ahead of its time, and it was one of the first games to show off what we see on Modern Graphics. But unlike Walkingblade 2 and The Jogging Of Us, the gameplay was actually fun. The game had a great sandbox where I could place C4's on a dumpster, kick it to a group of enemies, and decimate it. Doesn't that sound more fun than just walking? It's great to have amazing graphics, but you gotta have fun gameplay as well.

Something that also gets lost in the pursuit of graphical fidelity is the power of imagination. The human brain is amazing at embellishing reality when stimulated in the right ways. This is an effect we can see more prominently when remembering good times.
If you look at all the Ellie's at 7:35 the girl at the very right is not the same girl as the other two, especially not the leftmost one. That's certainly not how I'd imagine a flesh and bone Ellie judging by the PS3 model. While I would agree with the general sentiments concerning the unhealthy obsession with cutting edge visuals (and as an indie developer and a gamer in his 30s, I could write essays on the gameplay mechanics and technologies that existed in the 90s, that should be standard by now but aren't)... there's a reason people said Prey looked bad. And it's not because they're obsessed with fancy graphics.
They said Prey looked bad, because the art style didn't land right. The general presentation, in fact, is one of the big reasons it didn't do so well.
It had no edge. The art style of Dishonored worked, because it was very distinctive (although actually, even at the time, that game had issues with blurry, indistinct texturing that meant it looked nowhere near good enough to justify its system specs); it worked because no other game at the time looked quite like it, except perhaps Half-Life 2 (due to shared artistic influence); it worked because it made constant and excellent use of negative space, in every level.
But when Prey came along, it tried to effectively use a similar art style, but didn't have the right hook; it didn't have the juxtaposition of the grim, austere city, beside its gilded, wealthier aspects, and colourful magical elements. It didn't have the slick late-fantasy steampunk vibe. It had... what can only be described as "sort of BioShock, sort of Dishonored", and lacked the visceral horror edge of its predecessors.
Oh, as for Dishonored standing the test of time; you're doing a video about gameplay and art style over graphics... and talking about a game that was mechanically inferior to the old Thief games, demanded Windows Vista/Windows 7, and most certainly did not run well on a less than optimal machine.

I bought a PS5 a couple years ago excited for some next gen games, completed Ragnarok and the Spider-Man games but when I tried the new AC games and borrowed Gotham Knights I got disappointed.
Ended up playing and completing the Ezio Trilogy and the Arkham Collection I think the industry is trying to leave good gameplay and story telling behind to make realistic yet hollow games to appeal the mainstream audience which mostly buys COD every year and ignores the rest.

I fully agree. This whole realism obsession is ruining games. They are better off going an unrealistic artistic route.I miss older game designs SO MUCH. All of these art styles & game types don't need to just disappear. All because game tech has advanced they act like video games are "progressing" It doesn't feel like video games are progressing?
How can gaming be so out of touch with good artistic direction & game design?
I don't know why there's such a lack of different types of games being made now? I just really hope console gaming wakes up and starts having fun again. Where we start seeing a bunch of games coming out again. Where we see games that aren't afraid of taking risks, embracing the crazy, embracing the wacky. Remember all the different types of previous games? They had so much success and gaming should be tapping back into that! I cannot stand this corporate, sanitized, clean room feel that a lot of these games from our current generation has. It basically feels like 95% of the game industry has been taken over by people who have no idea what a good game is because they don't play video games and didn't play games growing up. That's how a lot of games from our current game industry feels. Where THE Passion! We need to have passion make it's way back into game development in order for gaming to truly flourish.
When I was growing up in the 90's, the future of gaming seemed amazing! It wasn't just about graphics. It was about physics effects, art styles, having a range of gameplay modes, gameplay mechanics, damage effects, environmental interaction, engaging AI to play against in single player mode, CPU bots in offline modes, just good AI in games campaigns. Current video games focus way too much on graphical nitpicking. It seems they forgot how much players enjoyed physics effects & other aspects that make games fun. Quirky graphics can work, if a creative art style is used. Add engaging CPU AI, gameplay modes, the list goes on.. idk what happened?

I really dont Like when the graphics are to "good" because Not everybody has a PC with a RTX Card thats why i Love simple graphics Like in Half Life 1 and 2 or Portal. When the graphics are extremly realistic then fewer people can Play it because they dont have the best PC in the World with the best Storage to even Download the Game.
And also can you maybe make a vid to prey its a great Game and you Talk about it in every Video

You can have neither good gameplay nor story and still have a good game. Everything is optional. Pokémon, FNAF Call of Duty MW series don't have either but are still successful and Pokémon is the biggest gaming franchise so i disagree with your opinion.

I always felt like this was kind of our fault as well, thanks to console wars we ended up hyping so much realism and graphics that it became the norm for Triple A games.
On a positive note, at least Indie games and some AA games reminded us why "bad graphics" and suspension of disbelief can be great for artistic reasons.

1 minute in. I agree with the intro.
The great graphics does not make a good game. Example I enjoyed more Thomas was alone for its story and gameplay even though the graphics were very simple, bu I did not enjoy the first game with quadruple A graphics quality The Callisto Protocol. It looked nice but didn’t have much more than that to offer.

And the most ironic part it's that it is that way becouse they didn't wanted to go for absolute realism, but an artistic choice, a lot of games of the Ps2 are still absolutely beutiful despite the pass lf time becouse when they were making them, they choose to go for a more unique style rather than a realistic one

Games like Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon mix stylized look with high fidelity. To be honest most people just want to see something they have never seen before where as art style is purely subjective as art in museums are. It's hard to make it a selling point, example is a game like Scorn that had great art direction and graphics but no one actually cared about the art direction as much as the fidelity. (Also you can turn off the looting animations in Horizon, most of the time you have more than enough unless you are near the beginning.)

For the most part I agree, there is one surprising exception though, and it's Facepunch's upcoming (in like, five years at best) "SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD" (according to their marketing, but all the info they've put out about it makes it sound more like a ROBLOX/Unity competitor), S&Box (pronounced "sandbox", as if people aren't just going to call it "ess and box" to make fun of it).
The reasons for that however are because...
    1. THEIR ARTSTYLE IS FUCKING DOGSHIT and not in a good way but in an unintentional uncanny valley way. The default player model has a cartoony design, but it's got weird, realistic textures and shading and everything else I've seen is realistic looking.
    2. This is honestly one of the few games that logically SHOULD be and would BENEFIT FROM acting as a tech demo, Facepunch clearly want to compete with FUCKING UNITY, which is a LITERAL FUCKING GAME ENGINE. How do I know this? Many of their updates are about how their features will make the game easier for Unity devs.
The reason I bring this up is because well, the default player model is only one aspect of the game, but it's one that's inherently going to be fucking omnipresent, especially if Facepunch really do want it to be a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod in which case most mods are gonna be based around the default player model which is genuinely unsettling to look at (and this fucker's going to even be in the main menu, you're gonna have to deal with it if you play).

This is why I don't like the word 'realistic' I think it distracts from the illusion that games are. Authentic, I think is a more adept word for it. Like having to craft each and every bullet in RDR2 is 'realistic' but is it fun? what does it actually contribute? Even then all you're doing is pushing a button, it's tedious and not fun. If being Authentic was the goal, I believe you would have a system that would replicated the feeling of real life without actually trying to replicate it.
