The Steam Deck as a "tinkering device" is one of the reasons I'm most excited for it. There is SO much you can do with it, it will be fun to just mess around with stuff and push it to its limits. ANOTHER reason I think it's so cool, is you can have a lot of fun with it WITHOUT doing any tinkering, so it has this massively broad appeal which is just awesome :)
My Deck just arrived today, and honestly I still can't get past the novelty of playing high-end games on a freaking handheld. I've basically been maxing out my net connection all afternoon downloading all my games (I got a 1TB microSD card in advance). I managed to drain my 20000mAh powerbank in one sitting, so it does pull a lot of juice, but I have yet to tinker with the power-saving features.
I mostly play 2d games or relaxing games like Dorf Romantik on my Deck but I keep a few demanding games on there just to occasionally boot up and have my mind blown that I can play it on a handheld anywhere I go.
You know, I think Jake has a thing others don’t. In gaming so many try to offer objective reasons why a game is good or bad because it is hard to refute, but Jake just says he likes stuff and explains some reasons he gets enjoyment out of it. Its more organic and less clinical.
Which is why his are not reviews but opinions and impressions. If you are looking for a full overview of a product without any feeling or bias coming from the interviewer, then you want a clinical review. Otherwise you are just listening what a person like or dislike, with nothing to support those statements except the personal opinion of the reviewer. I think we need to get both a proper review and a "personal opinion"; they are both valuable, especially when you are about to shed 500 dollars for a device like this
Exactly how i feel about portable gaming. Yes it sounds cheesy, but being able to be there, to reply about some remarks in the middle of some gaming, and just being able to hangout has become a priority for me as i grow older
I love love love my steam deck. I installed games that were sitting in my steam library that I didn't care to solely play on my gaming PC and all run extremely well. Metal Gear Solid 5, Civ 6, Fallout 4, Dishonored, etc.
What has me most excited is Steam's embracing of self repair and upgrade options, especially now the official iFixit kits are releasing. When they upgrade the hardware, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the upgrades were available as standalone replacements for gen 1 Steam Decks
As a very long time pc gamer, I was excited about getting my steam deck and it has proven to be a great purchase. I'm not a controller person, but I'm learning and the gyro feature is really cool to level that controller playing field for fps. Battery can be somewhat short for some games, but I've not really felt it was an issue... Playing for an hour plus and then charging isn't really bad. I am really hoping that game support cranks up, maybe allowances for older games via some community mods etc.
I suffer from back pain due to sitting on a chair for work. You have no idea how lifesaving is this thing to me, allowing me to play and relax on the sofa or on the balcony or in the garden.
I put in my reservation on the 25th of March and it says "After Q3..." for me meaning October or later. I joined the hype train late but I'm so excited to play around with it, I'll use it for some steam games (Celeste, Hollow Knight, MKX, Mk11, Skyrim and more...) and I've even been convinced by some people's videos to try out emulation. One thing I don't think people have spoken about enough is the idea that the steam deck isn't just a product, you get this beautifully positive experience with it as well, there is a whole community coming together specifically for this device which feels like a class of its own even though its considered a gaming PC. It's so heartwarming to see people coming together for this and creating stuff for it and sharing solutions to problems surrounding the deck. I can't wait to get my 512gb model and play some games on the go :D
It's not cringe at all for people to share a space like you said - I have an office at the end of my garden that is also my gaming space, but I also have a partner and a kid. Would be nice if I could share a space with her whilst she is netflixing her series, whilst also doing something I want. Also i like the idea of a little game before bed on something like stardew valley
Stumbled onto your channel some how. You made me realize how much I love tinkering and how that has been 90% of what I've been doing with my steam deck. I've been collecting, curating, and tinkering with emulators a crap ton. Working to get everything nice, neat, and optimized. I don't know how I could explain this to others... The amount of times I've been asked "What have you been playing?" and my answer being "Nothing. Still setting it up, two weeks in... it's great!" I'll get there.
I'm mostly a console gamer. I love the convenience and practicality that they offer, and even more the portability of the 3DS and Switch. The Steam Deck, from what I've seen, offers a decent amount of both of those things, while also offering access to a large chunk of the PC library many of us have (I myself have over a hundred games on Steam). That being said, availability and affordability are two big hurdles that I don't think I'll be able to overcome anytime soon. Would I get one otherwise? Probably.
Day one first hour ordered here, still waiting on mine, but I am so excited. All the work valve has put in has really propelled Linux forward. Their progress inadvertently gave me the ability to make the switch from windows to Linux for my gaming pc, can’t wait to play around with steamOS on the deck and see what it can do.
With all the features being added through updates it keeps getting even more and more attractive. The biggest downside was battery and fan. And with some of the latest updates these are getting improved with screen refresh rate and fan curve.
Had mine for a week now. I really like it. I've completely bought into the Nintendo Switch-style relationship with it though. It spends most of its time docked to the TV, paired with a Dualsense and mouse, and then I can take it with me when I head elsewhere. It's great to just to be able to play a PS2 game for half an hour without worrying about cables or memory cards or any set up, and within seconds, switch to Metal Gear Solid V with gyro aiming or Skater XL with a bunch of PC-only maps. I'm looking forward to opportunities to take it to friends' houses and play multiplayer retro stuff with minimal effort. Doesn't even matter if I bring controllers. It's easy enough to pair whatever they have.
Got my email just yesterday and at one point decided I wouldn’t buy it due to some of the early reviews I watched but to hear you personally say it’s good and sharing your experience has convinced me to go place the order.
i own one, and it basically replaced my desktop, my laptop and phone. It just has to vibe with you. I watch movies on it, chat, browse the web, take it with me on visits. The deck is basically a tablet running pc games. The amount of input options really makes his device so much better than any other console.

I keep saying it but damn... Jake just gets it! I love his content! And especially his coverage of the Deck, it feels like one of the only reviewer that tries to see this thing for what it wants to be and not what they want it to be. It's not meant to replace your PC, it's not meant to kill the switch... it's meant to be its own thing. It's so refreshing.
I am on the road quite a bit for work and the steam deck for me is just fantastic. I have to carry a macbook for work already so bringing just a steam deck with me to work on the train/plane and to chill in the hotel is simply mindblowing. To me this is just as big as the original gameboy in terms of what it does.
Got mine a few weeks back and having a blast with it! It's helping me with my backlog like I thought it would and some games just feel designed for it.
Being able to sit on the couch away from my pc or on the bus during long transit rides and binge old jrpgs has been amazing and has reminded me of all the fun I used to have playing jrpgs on my vita or ds back in the day
Bro, as a family man, having this thing has been great, now I dont care to go to the inlaws and stuff.. Yes a gaming laptop was technically a option as well but I could never bring myself to justify spending 1500+ for a decent laptop. But 400 bucks, i can do that easy. being able to sneak some game time in my longer car rides and stuff has been awesome as well. It has also been great to bring to LAN parties. Going to my friends house to play Tiny Tinas with a group has been great, I didnt pack my desktop like I normally do i just brought my steam deck and a charger (again yes this is another situation that a laptop would do the same thing) I personally carry a backpack with me whereever I go so i often find myself just taking it out and getting on Elden ring to do a bit of grinding or getting my Streets of rage for some quick fun alot.
Please dont drive and play steam deck at the same time. That sounds a little dangerous brosef. Ps. Its better for me to assume you are driving rather than your wife driving.
I had the sticky B button issue... So sent mine back and valve was very helpful. I wrote to the support team and sent in a picture and they sent me a shipping label and had started the RMA process the same day, I was surprised about how professional they were. I really like the deck and heard that they tweaked the fan curve in the new beta update and you can change the refresh rate too. Super excited to see all these enhancement once I get my replacement unit.
I got mine about 9 days ago. It’s the 512gb and at first I was like “…did I overpay?” But I think at this point the answer is no. This thing rules. 1. The extra storage space is necessary. Yes you can buy the SD cards or crack it open and replace the internal. I like not needing to do either of those things. 2. The etched glass rules. I hate seeing my ugly mug reflected back at me when using the switch in handheld. This is probably my favorite things about this model. Although… 3. The premium case is incredible. The size and form factor of this thing means you basically need the case around at all times. The premium case’s interior is so much nicer than the base model’s. I know it sounds weird to praise a case but it’s a big part of the experience. Overall, I just think this thing is the best for many of the reasons you mentioned in the video. I am super glad I will likely never have to double dip on game purchases again and I love hanging out in bed with my wife and the cats while playing AAA games.
I agree, Steam Deck doesn’t have to be in opposition to any other platforms, it is what it is, and what it is is pretty amazing. Room for all styles and all ways to play in this world. I didn’t want to buy a Pc, I love what Steam has to offer, I love games... bam. Can’t wait for my Deck.
I landed a preorder about 30 seconds after they went up. A few months later, I was notified that my car insurance payment was being moved up to December, so I had to cancel it, then later reorder. I'm now at "after Q3", and I'm kind of glad. This still looks great, but I might just wait for the second model.
I'm in a similar boat, but I waited intentionally until I had more information and felt confident about it. I ordered mine in October, and I probably won't see it until next October or so. I honestly wish I had ordered it sooner, but being in the "After Q3" group will mean that the software is more fleshed out when we get it, and they might even fix some hardware defect issues like the fans and the sticky B button that some units have because of some flash on the shell. It sucks to have to wait, but I am optimistic that we will get a better product because of it. However, I have a friend that was able to get one already, and I did get to try it, and it felt amazing. Very smooth, good weight to it, the games we tested ran well. It made me want it even more.... So maybe that was a mistake to try it...
Mine will be here next week and this has me much more excited. I'm running a 3080Ti setup and a switch on the side. The switch's limitations but ease of use and portability is amazing. The steam deck brings all that with actually decent hardware. Can't wait to game on it, in bed!!!
I just saw the latest Rally game on Switch. It looks worse than Rally Sport Challenge 1 and 2 on the original Xbox lol. The Switch 2 can't come fast enough. The Steam Deck is pretty crap at 60 fps though. Battery life is apparently the issue as to why it is not more powerful. Waste of money really . You could just play a laptop in bed instead.

Jake’s hair has just evolved to the state where Justin Chatwin wishes his Goku hair could’ve reached. More on-topic: I’ve got a friend who’s just frothing at the mouth in anticipation of finally getting his Steam Deck in. He’s big on emulation and portable gaming, so I know he’s gonna have a great time with this thing.
I’m 50 years old and just got mine. I am in awe of this machine and I love it! Like you’ve eluded to, this is so much more than a game machine. Valve knocked this out of the park!
I absolutely want a Steam Deck, watching and reading alot of the reviews, I can definitely see it as a niche console. But I switched to PC gaming awhile back so I have a huge library of games that I want to play. I also love my Switch and still play it, so the Steam Deck will become my new indie/backlog machine (with emulators as well!). But coming into it knowing your purchasing a product that's still developing is an important aspect to realize.
Great to here you’re opinion here Jake! Ironically, I just got my email today. I had thought about flipping it but I’ll probably keep it since the reviews have been so positive!!

Such a win-win for me and I can't wait to snag one. thanks for the update bro!
At 3:50 you're playing a game only on Epic Games store. Has the Epic Games launcher ran okay in general? Lots of games I wanna play are on it instead of steam
There‘s an alternative launcher for Epic and GOG for Linux that’s called „Heroic Games Launcher“. It skips installing the Windows Only Epic Games Launcher and just installs the games directly using Steam‘s proton.
This is what I want: I want to play my PC games on the go and not depend on streaming the games. I’d like to play a game in my bed, etc. I cannot wait to get my hands on the steam deck, but unfortunately I’ll have to wait until “After Q3.” So probably 2023.
The Steam Deck has really lived up to my expectations, as a portable fanatic. Going on 1 month with it now and I'm just happy with it. Games are more fun on it than my desktop
I got my steam deck a little over a month ago. I have to say I love it. I fully switched from my laptop to this as soon as I got it. I have to say that your point regarding playing a game in the same room as family and such is nice because you're present even if they're watching the bachelorettes
The Steam Deck is amazing. I was hoping for something to run some indie & older games, and do some emulation. I finally got it, and it runs Elden Ring.
I mean the deck plays current AA titles and your wanting to play super Mario ? Lol just get an android device for 50 bucks and you can emulate. Waste of money if you are using it for that purpose
Thank you for addressing the "is this thing going to kill the Switch?" question. I would love to get a Steam Deck on account that I don't play my PC games as often since I got the Switch OLED. But I'm going to need a better screen and battery life, respectively, before I break down and get a Deck.
dude even without a better screen, games look literal head and sholders better than the switch on the steam deck. Like its not even close. Every slightly demanding AAA game on switch looks like there was vaseline smeared across the entire thing.
@@mitcHELLOworld My thoughts on the Steam Deck are separate from Nintendo and their Switch. Nintendo's brand/business model has never been about graphics and specs, which is why I laugh when people call the Steam Deck the "Switch Killer". Just like any freshly released hardware/software, there's always room for improvement. Give me an OLED screen to handle those dimly lit games like Batman. Improve upon the battery. Make the device a lil slimmer...just a tad. Until then, I'm good.
It can barely run Crysis lol . Have a look at the compromises Digital Foundry had to make just to get it to run. That should be all the benchmark people need to avoid this nonsense. Gabe has far too much money as it is without people throwing money away on pointless garbage like Steamdeck . If it can't play Crysis it should be illegal lol

I am sharing your opinion with my Steam Deck. I mostly play singleplayer hardcore games and the majority of these work out of the box and the most fun part is that I can tinker with this device as I like it. Never have I imagined to play Minecraft modpacks on the go or play modded Isaac or Project Zomboid as I like it on a handheld. I am modding almost all of my games and in that regard my Steam Deck has delivered customized game experiences. The desktop part is fun too, as you can install whatever programs you like to work with (of course in the linux context). When you like to tinker with your games, but want a console experience, then this device is a must have.
Got my email today and ordered mine today. I went for the 64GB version after seeing the ability to upgrade the eMMC to an NVME and also the fact you can slap a massive SD Card in there. It was a no brainer for me Just need to wait now and see how long delivery takes (hopefully not too long)
I pulled the trigger on it based on the amount of friends I had purchasing it and I've been so happy since the day it arrived. It has become my go to device for gaming when I have small increments of time and I am getting to finally work on my backlog in my Steam library.
I’ve had my Deck just over 2 weeks and I fuckin love it. Finally playing Hollow Knight for the first time, and it feels absolutely perfect on it, while getting 5 hours at 60fps. The new hot wheels racer also feels made for Deck. The deck is certainly my favorite new tech. Looking forward to the dbrand pastel black skins for it :)
I have a Switch Lite and an aging laptop with Steam installed on it. I have a neglected library on Steam and I was thrilled to hear about this system coming out. Borderlands 3, The Witcher 3, Halo Collection, TES IV, so many games I can now play much more regularly and comfortably. I have a reservation in Q3, alas, but I await it coming soon.
Went from being Q2, to after Q2, and now I'm in Q3. So yeah in terms of waiting for this thing, it has been frustrating. The only silver lining is that the longer I wait, the more updates get implemented and the more games that become verified/playable.
Got mine in the very first week and I'm also loving it. Since I got it, I also realized that I never go anywhere so I had not many opportunities to use it on the go. But yeah love playing games anywhere in the house and especially many sessions in bed before I go to sleep. I'm pretty impressed by how many games of my library are already working flawlessly, even if some games involved minor tinkering like changing proton compatibility settings. Great device so far and especially great support by Valves DEV teams. It's great how Valve is engaging with the community to improve many things of the overall experience.
Flaws: "doesn't play everything." That's not serious, right? Is a 2000+ game library at launch (plus emulation) seriously not big enough? Can we really fault Valve for not porting ALL of Windows gaming over to Linux in a period of just a few years?
Hey Jake, just wanted to say you’re awesome and I always enjoy the content. I’ve been a fan since before Camp PMI (the old format was so ahead of its time btw). I’d consider myself, at most, a casual gamer yet I’m bell subscribed to your channel bc the way you talk about things with joy and no malice has always been refreshing. Watching people like you has always reminded me to chill out and just enjoy things more.
I'm super glad that this thing didn't fail like most other Valve produced hardware. It's just really cool being able to bring your Steam library wherever you go. Also, you often talk about your love for comics, so if you read this, could you recommend some good Marvel comics? Preferably Spider-Man or Wolverine but I just gotta get into reading Marvel overall.
Got my preorder on the 16th of 2021. Now that its the 14th, and 2 days from my one year “anniversary” I’m hopeful to get that email today and make my day.

I'm so looking forward to have mine. I want to play some specific games on the Deck and I want to use it all around my house and sometimes at work. I think the Deck is a really big step in making PC gaming even more mobile
I'm not sure whether I should wait for a Gen 2 Steam deck, my ideal version of it would be an Oled screen, at least 6 hours of intense gaming battery life and 60 FPS minimum in most games. If chips can allow for that, it'll be a game changer. Hopefully we get new battery tech sooner than later.
I think they’ll do like Nintendo and wait for the initial version to stop selling so damn much before they finalize and announce Pro or XL version. And I think, just like with Switch, that will take at least a few years.
That’ll be at least 5 years away I think once they release the steam deck base then it’ll essentially mirror the switch play cinematic games at home, and light small games while traveling.
@@chrisallen9638 happy about the Deck’s new beta feature of custom screen refresh rate lock.
I bet there's a whole slew of PC gamers who think this. I certainly do!
What is the first customization that you would do, or did to your steam deck!?
My Deck just arrived today, and honestly I still can't get past the novelty of playing high-end games on a freaking handheld. I've basically been maxing out my net connection all afternoon downloading all my games (I got a 1TB microSD card in advance). I managed to drain my 20000mAh powerbank in one sitting, so it does pull a lot of juice, but I have yet to tinker with the power-saving features.
lucky duck!! haha.. Mine is april-june so Man oh man I hope one day soon I get that e-mail !!! Dying to get my hands on a steam deck
After turning Settings down for battery...
I mostly play 2d games or relaxing games like Dorf Romantik on my Deck but I keep a few demanding games on there just to occasionally boot up and have my mind blown that I can play it on a handheld anywhere I go.
Just got my email yesterday should be here tomorrow according to FedEx 😃
How long was that one sitting to drain the battery?
You know, I think Jake has a thing others don’t. In gaming so many try to offer objective reasons why a game is good or bad because it is hard to refute, but Jake just says he likes stuff and explains some reasons he gets enjoyment out of it. Its more organic and less clinical.
yes!
Absolutely! Well said my friend.
That is exactly the reason why I love his review videos so much ^^
Which is why his are not reviews but opinions and impressions. If you are looking for a full overview of a product without any feeling or bias coming from the interviewer, then you want a clinical review. Otherwise you are just listening what a person like or dislike, with nothing to support those statements except the personal opinion of the reviewer.
I think we need to get both a proper review and a "personal opinion"; they are both valuable, especially when you are about to shed 500 dollars for a device like this
he explains it as a casual friend that's what most of us need. Tech specs analysis is great but the most important content is casual opinion for me
Exactly how i feel about portable gaming.
Dishonored is great, play the DLC too
What has me most excited is Steam's embracing of self repair and upgrade options, especially now the official iFixit kits are releasing. When they upgrade the hardware, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the upgrades were available as standalone replacements for gen 1 Steam Decks
Thanks for consistently putting out great content. I always look forward to this part of the day
thanks Dustin! so glad to hear that. helps a lot. thank you!!
@@JakeBaldino I think it's better than the Asus Rog Ally. Yeah, the ROG ally is more powerful but the SD makes up for it in every other area.
And with some of the latest updates these are getting improved with screen refresh rate and fan curve.
can we just take a moment to appreciate this dude's hair.
and also delivery
My partner watched one of his videos with me and was literally like, "wow, his hair, your hair could never be like that" 😅😳😔
Had mine for a week now.
Baldino lowkey morphing into Johnny Bravo
Something that lives up to the hype! Thanks for this video I am about to complete my order so should have it in a few days!
i own one, and it basically replaced my desktop, my laptop and phone. It just has to vibe with you.
I watch movies on it, chat, browse the web, take it with me on visits. The deck is basically a tablet running pc games. The amount of input options really makes his device so much better than any other console.
How's videos on it. Is it streamed vids or downloaded? Thanks.
@@redone823 streamed, pretty much perfect. The only issue there may be is when the wifi driver throws a hissy fit for longer than the buffer lasts

Being able to sit on the couch away from my pc or on the bus during long transit rides and binge old jrpgs has been amazing and has reminded me of all the fun I used to have playing jrpgs on my vita or ds back in the day
recommend any jrpgs?
Bro, as a family man, having this thing has been great, now I dont care to go to the inlaws and stuff.. Yes a gaming laptop was technically a option as well but I could never bring myself to justify spending 1500+ for a decent laptop. But 400 bucks, i can do that easy. being able to sneak some game time in my longer car rides and stuff has been awesome as well.
It has also been great to bring to LAN parties. Going to my friends house to play Tiny Tinas with a group has been great, I didnt pack my desktop like I normally do i just brought my steam deck and a charger (again yes this is another situation that a laptop would do the same thing)
I personally carry a backpack with me whereever I go so i often find myself just taking it out and getting on Elden ring to do a bit of grinding or getting my Streets of rage for some quick fun alot.
Please dont drive and play steam deck at the same time. That sounds a little dangerous brosef.

Although…
This thumbnail and video are great, Jake! Keep up the great content!

Mine just came in the mail today. I don’t have a huge use for it but my family is going on a montano vacation and I’ll enjoy having it.
This is what I want: I want to play my PC games on the go and not depend on streaming the games. I’d like to play a game in my bed, etc. I cannot wait to get my hands on the steam deck, but unfortunately I’ll have to wait until “After Q3.” So probably 2023.
Thanks Jake. Can't wait to get my hands on one..

Live up to my name! Baka not nice.
I finally got it, and it runs Elden Ring.
just use your phone? it probably goes higher than 720 too
I mean the deck plays current AA titles and your wanting to play super Mario ? Lol just get an android device for 50 bucks and you can emulate. Waste of money if you are using it for that purpose
I love my steam deck. I find it fun getting all my games to run. Trying things out etc. Like the old days

Hopefully ARM gets supported enough for PC gaming that the Deck 2 adopts it. Imagine the M1 power efficiency and power in a handheld.
Don't know if it's gameboy nostalgia or what, but I'll gladly play games I could play on ps4 or pc on a handheld even at home.
Jake’s opinion on anything is always nice to hear. I feel like he just gets it
Got my email today and ordered mine today. I went for the 64GB version after seeing the ability to upgrade the eMMC to an NVME and also the fact you can slap a massive SD Card in there. It was a no brainer for me
Just need to wait now and see how long delivery takes (hopefully not too long)

Hollow Knight sounds like the perfect game for it.
I'm Q3 and i'm fucking DYING! to get my hands on this thing! The possibility's and my first step into Linux, A tinkerer's wet dream indeed.....

You're gonna get either 6 hours battery life OR 60 fps. Pick one. You aren't gonna get a handheld that can do both for a very long time.
@@chrisallen9638 happy about the Deck’s new beta feature of custom screen refresh rate lock. Means you can choose a framerate anywhere between 10 and 60 as your target and pace frames accordingly at a system-wide level. 40-48 feels about as good as 60 on a handheld, but at a 20-33% power/battery savings/extension!
Don’t wait, support Gen1! The wait not gonna worth it and power banks exist!
