Well, in reality it's very much possible. The Plane he was on was a heavily modified PBY-5 Catalina. Nicknamed "The Black cat" or the Catalina black cat. The original PBY only has 30 cal on sides and front and light armor. Meanwhile Catalina as shown. Has an automatic 20mm cannon on the front and 50 cals on the side. They are armed to the teeth and has more durability than normal PBY-5. So 2 of this with experience pilot and crew can do what the Black cat mantaray 54 and hammerhead do.
This mission is actually a combination of two missions I believe of the real VPB-34 Black Cats squadron in the pacific. Mission(s) 1: “31 Dec 1943-22 Jan 1944: Lieutenant Commander Thomas A. Christopher, the squadron commanding of-ficer, set the pace for VP-34 operations in the Bismarck Sea area of operations. On 31 December 1944 he attacked and damaged one enemy vessel during a night patrol. On 22 January 1944 he again attacked and damaged an enemy vessel at night, receiving damage from heavy A fire resulting in injury to one crewmember. For his leadership in seeking out the enemy and pressing home the attack under heavy fire Lieutenant Commander Christopher was awarded the Navy Cross. On 15 January 1944 Christopher led a five-aircraft attack on a strongly escorted enemy convoy attempting to cross the straits. He made a mast-head attack at extremely close range and personally accounted for one 6,800-ton merchantman, while the remainder of the flight destroyed two more. For this action Lieutenant Commander Christopher was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a second Navy Cross.” Mission 2: 3 Dec 1944 At 0013 hours, Cooper (DD 695) was struck by a torpedo while engaging Japanese surface craft and barges in the waters of Ormoc Bay, Leyte, Philippines. The ship broke in two and sank in less than a minute, resulting in the loss of 191 crew mem- bers and 168 survivors left struggling in the water. At 1400 Lieutenant Frederick J. Ball and his crew were re- turning from a long-range reconnaissance mission and spotted the survivors floating in the bay. Ball landed his Catalina in the bay and proceeded over the next hour to pick up survivors within range of enemy shore fire. He rescued 56 sailors from the bay, and when the aircraft could hold no more Lieutenant Ball began a takeoff run that took three miles before liftoff could be achieved. He safely returned to his base with his pas- sengers, many of them wounded. The remaining 112 survivors were collected by another VPB-34 Catalina which taxied to safety outside the bay where they were offloaded onto another ship. For his bravery under fire Lieutenant Ball received the Navy Cross.
I love the music of mission, it really; really captures the energy of this, chaotic display of destruction as you fire your weapons at the boats, you yourself is gradually receiving fire, bullets passing everywhere as your plane get riddled with them. And the best is that the music really get along with the atmosphere like in 2:16, as you’ve lost sight of the Japanese as the plane tries to make another pass, there’s an eerie silence but then boom on 2:25 the silence was replaced with a bang followed by an adrenaline induced soundtrack, making you very excited as once again you are going to fight them
Tbh if you listen closely every thing from the soundtrack sounds like it should be coming from the mission like the gingels you hear sounds like shell chasing being rattled about for the vibration of the engines or falling from the guns or the boat sirens sounding like it the boats making them or the bullets hitting the plane every thing just works or the drums sound like AA fire
Imagine this remastered... And with more missions like d-day, they could do so much instead of shitty futuristic story's. I can't imagine how fun driving around in tanks could be with today's graphics, running over other players and
Hopefully they'll remaster them in order, that means this is next. Plus, they know they'll make a load from this game if they do it again. Maybe don't add more missions, it's a good game as it is.
Just think about it. A PBY landed meters from you that were floating in the middle water. Your friends were being pulled aboard and as you swimming to it, it began to accelerate for take off because the PBY couldn't carry anymore men. You became hopeless. It's scary just think about it.
Throughout school, specifically history, my teachers rarely talked about WWII or the heroes who fought during the war, or any war for that matter. Most of what I know about the war was from this masterpiece of a game. Thank you Treyarch for making my childhood and teaching me a little bit of history and about the heroism of WWII vets.
Have you ever heard of The Rape of Berlin? The only reason you haven’t heard about it till now is because it was committed by the Soviets. And of course they were on the winning side. Always remember both sides have their Heroes and Monsters.
3:05 BOOTH: "Negative. We can do this." Coincidence, there's a miniature poster with a lady in it saying "We Can Do It" Love the mission and music but we sadly lost Harrington/Hammerhead :(
In my opinion, this level is a lot more intense then "Death From Above" from Modern Warfare. It gets your adrenaline pumping cuz your right in the middle of the fight and there's a chance.of getting shot down unlike being in an AC-130 which hard to take down since it's flying at a high altitude. Not saying it was a bad level, but I enjoyed Black Cats more. And the soundtrack is fucking amazing. Kinda reminds me of that old Xbox game Blood Wake.
Totally, totally, totally agree with you! The best part is that you do a water landing in the third part of the level and have to (admittedly the animation is a little weird) pull sailors out of the water before they drown or are murdered by Japanese PT boat crews or burn to death in the oil slick of their own ships, and fight until you run out of ammo. Death From Above you are also flying as a protector, but it feels like you're basically just keeping the SAS team comfortable and saving them the effort of fighting the swarms of ultranationalist you mow down who also magically lack the air defense they used to shoot down Price's team's helicopter in the first place. The action in Black Cats is maybe a little exaggerated but it delivers some great pathos of being part of a crew, executing a devastating attack on the enemy, and struggling to defend your brothers in arms when they were the most vulnerable.
"Among who stationed there are the crews of the U.S Navy Black Cats. Men who will risk everything before they would leave any of us, in enemy waters". Instant salute o7
Yeah, I learned it ehen I played this mission. I was 6 years old and I was into military games. I played Arma when I was 6 also (before WaW) and everyone is just saying 6O'Clock! and I was like WOt. Then my dad bought me this and knew almost all the military things happening.
The best Call of Duty released. The story was excellent, music was awesome and everything else was just "holy shit'. I liked the fact that at 2:37, Booth actually gives a shit about Locke instead of treating him like the usual one man army character and a bunch of other minor details. Whoever wrote the script for the levels deserves a gold star. And let's not forget those fucking drums on the music. Holy hell.

Thats "rosie the riviter" she was an icon of sorts during the 40's. Enter Rosie, she was made to convince women to help with the war by doing a "mans job". Its more of a "history" easter egg. Nothing more.
Gabriel Serrano And my only way to safety is under heavy fire? Yes, I probably would try to fight through the pain and shock to make sure I get out of there alive. I've gotten that far, I ain't letting myself get turned into fishfood, not while I have a say about it. Plus, with all that adrenaline pumping through your body, I think the pain of being shot would be drowned out by the panic and heavy swimming. So I'd imagine one with a strong enough resolve could get on a gun and help stave off those Zeros long enough.
I'd like to see if you'd put your money where your mouth is. Oh wait, you wouldn't. Because you couldn't. Fuck your resolve this isn't a game, if you're physically unfit to do a task like that, your resolve won't get you anywhere.

I love how the soundtrack went perfectly with this mission you're riding a fighter plane being ordered around by your fellow soldiers switching guns around and shoot at the ships to rescue people it's just fascinating
The PBY Catalina did some major work saving downed pilots during the war alongside reconnaissance work; if it wasn't for the Catalinas the Brits would have never found Bismarck trying to make a run for it to the Atlantic as well. A great if exaggerated homage to them in this level.
Yea, that's true. Though I think exaggeration is also due to them either not wanting to the mission shorter ans used multiple times (the logical reason) or due to time restraints (the Activision reason)
Congratulations you have destroyed a flotilla of Japanese PT boats and an entire Carrier Air Group worth of zeros singlehandedly. What are you going to do with all of the medals of honor you are going to receive?
The sense of terror that hammerhead gets, the feeling of panic during the rescue and the beautiful trolling you can pull off by NOT destroying the tankers is amazing.

As great as the entire mission looks, I think the final bit is the best. So much is happening, from the men crying out for help, the music keeping a constant beat that can be barely heard through all the noise, the PT boats firing on you, kamakazi planes making that loud roaring sound before crashing down and exploding, all of it really sells the difficulty and danger people went through across all combat fields in the war
Even after playing this mission so many times it still kicks so much ass and still makes you feel so badass because of the rythm and feel of the music, movement, shooting etc, damn i cant see a remaster of this game by treyarch but i do hope it happens, would make me, an old time fan very happy and so many others would to. 💚💙💚
I’ve rescued about five survivors in this mission. Also I’ve discovered the following dialogue when you rescue the certain amount of people: “Two and they are in pretty bad shape” “Only four” “We pulled in five men on board”
Also there are dialogue for that there is a side mission rescue atleast many sailors if you get 3 or 2 below you fail the side mission side mission count as how good you are or how bad you are your supposed to rescue if you manage to get atleast more rescue above you'll be called a life saver
It’s more atmospheric. More immersive. It feels like you’re there. The best graphics in the world can’t immerse you alone. It’s how it’s used along with story and sound that sells it. Black Cats does this perfectly 👌🏼

@@michaelchristidis8658 It’s one of the random names friendly NPCs get. As far as I know, the crew members of a plane usually don’t go on missions without their plane unless they have to.
This was my favorite Call of Duty mission at the time, and it still is because not only are you put in a different kind of environment and war machine the franchise hasn't done before.. but you also feel the sense of hopelessness once you're surrounded by enemy fighters. Mounted machine guns are always badass, and this mission offers several variants. And then you get to add on rescuing efforts WHILE combating enemy forces. Call of Duty doesn't have enough of that : rescuing.
you know aparently japaneese pilots would comit suicide if their planes were to have a bullet hole in it for example you grab a pistol and shoot one bulet at it and he notices it he would imidiately commit sucide
Best mission in the game hands down, its immersive, action packed, and makes it feel like you are actually at war. Plus the music and voice acting are amazing.
The soundtrack in this mission is what makes it so goddamn awesome, the gun shots blending in with the alarm sounds and drums are so mesmerizing. I wish modern CoD games also make the soundtrack memorable like older ones do.
I remembered when I first did this mission I wanted to save every survivor in the water but I realized it wasn’t possible cause you had to shoot your way through. It made me sad cause I realized thats what it was like in War you can’t save everyone even if you wanted to. It really gave this game realism. This is game is an absolute masterpiece.
The second half of this mission is probably the most stressed out I’ve gotten in a vid campaign, trying to save people and kill the enemies simultaneously
I played this mission with absolute professionalism every time I stick the game in; a few times I got so good at this mission, I managed to save seven guys. I know it's insane but it is do-able. I haven't even mastered on how to do it myself, all I know is it got to be done on Veteran.

All of the music in this game is fucking *AWESOME!!!*

Yeah, make me think soldiers in the past have more balls than us today. Respect for them!
Vinsoy_Sauce death from above was more unnerving than intense really
Yeah, this is a real war, “Death from Above” was just a turkey shoot.

“Two and they are in pretty bad shape”
“Only four”
“We pulled in five men on board”

Also there are dialogue for that there is a side mission rescue atleast many sailors if you get 3 or 2 below you fail the side mission side mission count as how good you are or how bad you are your supposed to rescue if you manage to get atleast more rescue above you'll be called a life saver
