  • Last year I dived into the iconic British Indie alternative Rock band "Arctic Monkeys" latest album "The Car" being my first time checking out the band I was taken aback by just how warm and rich the sounds were. "Body Paint" and "There Better Be A MirrorBall" were some of my favourite songs of 2022. Well I thought it was about time that I checked our more from this amazing band, this week I checked out the album prior "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" I was very keen to hear the soundscapes and finally dive back into the world of Arctic Monkeys

This is a concept album. They are supposed to be a lounge act at a hotel and casino on the moon.

@@cavemanjack No problem. Love your channel. BTW, I’d recommend reacting to either Sigur Ros’s Agaetis Byrjun or Spiritualized’s Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating In Space. Both great albums. The second actually beat out Ok Computer for album of the year in 1997.

For me listening to the album for the first time was super intense. I didn’t understand what the hell I was hearing which is why I relate to your reaction quite a bit. However, I urge you to give it more listens. This album is probably my favorite album by any artist and is a definition of a grower.
There is an insane amount of intricate instrumentation, all the lyrics do make sense if you look into them, and the themes of isolation, consumerism, modern technology are amazingly explored.

You can tell there is some deep concepts but trying to work them out on a first listen was a no go haha, I realised that I just had to jump along for the ride and it took me to some crazy places but overall I loved the unique sounds on the project and am keen to see how the album continues to sit with me over the years

Hello You from the car is actually a leftover/scrap from TBH+C. That's why its the most synth-y song in the car. It also serves as a denouement of sorts for the TBH+C story along side "Anyways" from the b-sides.

  • @Slashycent

Alex got burned out with their Indie/Alternative-rock sound (which you have yet to experience) and so he made up this fantasy world of a moon-based hotel and casino where they're a jazzy lounge act.
The Car is actually about them trying, and failing, to break free from that fantasy and return to their old sound.
Alex needs his "costumes" and "body paint" to stay inspired these days, they've become his writing tools, leaving him surrounded by the fantastical orchestration of their new sound and making him forget their old.
So yeah, this album was so monumental that it kind of caused an identity crisis that inspired the next one lol.

It's also utterly insane how this album predicted the Covid-lockdown, _down to the exact month, two years_ before it happened.
"No one's on the streets, we moved it all online as of March."
What do you know, Alex?! lol

it's definitely hard to swallow at first! we've all been there, but it reaaaally grows on the more you listen to it, it is my favorite album from them! Probably because it's nothing like AM (their previous album)... everyone was expecting AM2 but they threw a curve ball with TBH&C and i loved that :) (Sorry for my bad english :p) Great reaction as always!

Once you understand the album and appreciate it for what it is this is an amazing album and you will find something new with every listen.
Originally it was a planned to be a solo concept album written by alex on a piano (he was out of ideas on guitar) before he showed the band and they wanted to get involved with their own spin on it.
Its based on scifi and some songs are from the perspective of a retired lounge singer residing on "tbhc" which is in the future and on the moon.
AM the previous album is probably their cleanest work and while not super rich in sounds it is a really well put together album with a really relatable theme and super catchy which i think you will enjoy!

The Car and this record are a HUGE step off in terms of their "sound." It's a concept album about lounge singers on the moon.
the themes and such are more a commentary on the digital age and technology, mixed with the commerce of information and modernization in general.
picking up on some lyrics in specific songs like "in time for my weekly video chat with god", "technological advances really bloody get me in the mood" shows some of this.
it's also a sort of message to fans of their old stuff that they've moved into a different sound which I think you'll see as you react to more of their discography. some of it is also a bit nonsense or just to play the character of a lounge singer on the moon. I think exploring each song and making your own theories is fun, or there's good videos out there talking about it!
the best part is each time you re-listen to it you pick up even more you didn't know was there, in lyrics AND sound! It's still also a great rainy day album as well.
really looking forward to you reacting to more of their stuff! this album and their second one are my favorite! thanks for doing it!

Definitely listen to Humbug! It's got a Queen of the Stone Age vibe to it because Josh Homme produced most of the tracks, and it's the pinnacle of the alternative rock sound they had going on with their first five albums! It would be great to see you start from the beginning and listen to what sound they established with those 2 albums, WPSIA and FWN (2006 and 2007), and get to Humbug (2009), where we see the first inspirations for Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, both lyrically and sonically, and discover what inspired them to get more poppy and refined with Suck it and See (2011) and AM (2013). I believe their self-titled album, AM, will be right up your alley, as the front-man Alex Turner described it as "like a Dr. Dre beat, but we've given it an Ike Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster", adding that it "sounds less like four lads playing in a room this time."

I think the easiest path to understanding what this album is all about lies in the track Science Fiction -
"I want to make a simple point about peace and love, but in a sexy way where it's not obvious, highlight dangers and send out hidden messages the way some science fiction does"
Alex was seemingly tired of writing love songs and wanted to comment on contemporary topics, but needed to find a way into it that wasn't just directly discussing them. That's where the whole concept of this hotel on the moon came from, he's said he likes the idea that an album is a place you can go and visit for a while. I wouldn't say it's a proper concept album because some of the songs don't really touch on the actual location - there's no narrative always being pushed forward - but it's all certainly thematically cohesive.
Star Treatment gives us the perspective of this rockstar past his prime that's now a crooning lounge singer in the hotel bar. To me it's about the idea of someone's career ending prematurely before the singer is ready for it, because their 5 minutes of fame have come and gone - "and as we gaze skyward, ain't it dark early? It's the star treatment".
The next one that directly comments on the location is the title track which is where a bit more of Alex's own perspective on why he created this with "I've been on a bender back to that prophetic esplanade, where I ponder all the questions but just manage to miss the mark". It's like he's sort of acknowledging the way his lyrics can be hard to break through and properly relate to, but this weird science fiction world is the only way he can express his feelings on these topics
Four out of Five is all about a taco stand called the Information Action Ratio on the roof of the hotel, which is basically just an avenue for Alex to make comments about how you can make something that's seen as perfect but you can't get that 5 out of 5 score
She Looks Like Fun doesn't really touch on the hotel concept all that much, but the idea behind it is that these are all things he's seeing while scrolling through Instagram, and I suppose it's a sort of criticism of how we condense these interactions with other people into content we consume. Makes for a very weird tone shift with the "She looks like fun, cheeseburger, she looks like fun, snowboarding" but I think it gets that point across well

21:35 So the album is ofcourse a concept album. And the main massage of this album is technology and what it does to us. Batphone is probably the most telling about it. But that message is everywhere in this album. As for the stories betwen the songs I didn't find any that connect the songs but from what I think Turner said they are all stories from the Hotel.
