  • This week we're ranking the seven studio albums by Arctic Monkeys.
    ****
    Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002. The group consists of lead singer Alex Turner, drummer Matt Helders, guitarist Jamie Cook and bassist Nick O'Malley. Former bassist Andy Nicholson left the band in 2006 shortly after their debut album was released.
    Arctic Monkeys were heralded as one of the first bands to come to public attention via the Internet, with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), received widespread critical acclaim upon release and topped the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history at the time. It won Best British Album at the 2007 Brit Awards and has since been hailed as one of the greatest debut albums. The band's second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), was also acclaimed by critics and won Best British Album at the 2008 Brit Awards. They went on to release Humbug (2009) and Suck It and See (2011), both of which were well-received critically, albeit not to the extent of their first two albums.
    The band's wider international fame came with the success of their critically acclaimed fifth album AM (2013), which was supported by the global hit "Do I Wanna Know?". It topped four Billboard charts and was certified 3x platinum in the US. At the 2014 Brit Awards, the album became their third to win British Album of the Year. Their sixth album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018), was a major departure from the band's previous guitar-heavy work, instead being piano-oriented. Their seventh album, The Car, was released in 2022 and received nominations for the Ivor Novello Awards and the Mercury Prize in 2023. It received a Best Alternative Music Album nomination at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, their third to do so, and their second consecutive nomination after Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
    In the United Kingdom, the band became the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first five albums. The band have won seven Brit Awards; winning Best British Group and British Album of the Year three times, becoming the first band to ever "do the double" -that is, win in both categories- three times; a Mercury Prize for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, an Ivor Novello Award and 20 NME Awards. In addition, they have been nominated for nine Grammy Awards, and received Mercury Prize nominations in 2007, 2013, 2018 and 2023. Both Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and AM are included in NME's and different editions of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time lists.

We differed on stuff too, obviously. Im still trying to get over his Jason Isbell negative comments, lol. Still, hope he is well and happy. Best of luck, whether yous recruit someone new, or continue as a dynamic duo. Stuart

    As an AM fan I was looking forward to this. Seen them a few times including earlier in 2023. My top 3 would always alternate between the first 3 albums but currently-
    1. Humbug (seriously Cornerstone and Crying Lightning are classics)
    2. Whatever People Sat I Am.... (A Certain Romance deserves more love guys)
    3. FWN (so solid front to back)
    4. The Car (gets better with every play to the point it challenges my top 3)
    5. AM (very solid but my love for it has lessened in time. Do I Wanna Know would be a top 3 for me overall))
    6. Suck It And See (I saw them tour this in maybe 2011 and maybe only half the songs grab me)
    7. TBH&C (I've tried and tried but no I cannot place it above the bottom)
    I know Kram is not around but seriously dude the 1975 are not even in the same universe as AMs

    I wonder why Kramzer left. That’s a big loss… I usually found myself agreeing with at least one of you on your opinions of things. This session had a great flow; with the two of you it just moves faster and more focused, but still plenty of space for different opinions clearly explained. I really like it, the new Siskel & Ebert! We’ll miss Kram, but you have the platform to make snappier, leaner, pin-pointed vids, so lean into it!
    I really like the Artic Monkeys, but I’m a Whatever You Think and AM guy…they lost me with the lounge rock stuff. But in truth I haven’t really listened much to Tranquility or The Car…your piece makes we want to check them out, and others I only briefly touched on, like Humbug and Suck It. Got me thinking, so great presentation. Enjoyed it very much. Keep ‘em coming, please! Cheers, JPE

    I'm one of the many who unfortunately has only heard AM all the way through, so this was a wake up call to dig deeper. Thanks to Kramzer for all the great snark over the years and thanks to Jason and Joe for continuing the work on one of my favorite channels! Hoping to see Knee Socks or Arabella on the top tens as those are my top tracks by them but also excited to use the top 10s as a jumping off point because unfortunately the way my listening goes even a 7 album discography is a lot to get through

    Hard not to notice the subdued air of a video defined as much by who's not there as who is there. But I'm sure that will pass, in time. Jason sums up perfectly how I felt about Arctic Monkeys when they first showed up, so I was never that fussed about them. But it's holiday time, so the perfect opportunity to revisit and reappraise, as I'm so often prompted to do by TLM.

    Sad to hear Kramzer’s departure. I tended to side with him on many things, such as Radiohead and U2. He brought a lot of energy to to trio.
    Specifically, I was hoping you guys would do a Radiohead concert setlist draft like you did with Zeppelin and Rush. Given Ryan’s enjoyment of Radiohead, his picks would have been cool to see. In addition to Radiohead, I was also holding out for U2 concert setlist draft, but with Jason’s disdain for the group it’s a certainty that ain’t happening now.

    When the Arctic Monkeys first came out I was pretty unimpressed by their debut and pretty well ignored them after that. I did listen to The Car last year and liked it so that made me think I could find stuff to enjoy in their discography. It was cool to go through and find some stuff I liked and I definitely have a better opinion of them now than I did before. I still don't really care for that early sound of theirs very much but I will keep my eyes on what they are going to do in the future.

I discovered them that year and have watched the band mature and develop over that last 7 years. Their debut was definite highlight of 2006, and certainly my soundtrack. As a then twenty -two year-old, the themes were utterly relatable and relevant. The references and the musical atmosphere really did resonate with so many young Brits. It’s a very U.K. centric record, and Alex Turner has never sounded so northern. On subsequent releases, they slowly began to lose that charm. Perhaps they realised it wouldn’t register in America; maybe they didn’t want to be unknowns, stateside, like that other great Sheffield act, Pulp.

    • @TastesLikeMusic
      @TastesLikeMusic  7 месяцев назад +1

      I too was 22 in 06. Their first album was fairly big here. It’s not like they were unknowns in the US. Not as mainstream as AM but among the indie kids it was about as big as you can be. -Jason

    • @fdunlop
      @fdunlop 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TastesLikeMusic That's interesting to know. I think the difference here in the UK was that they weren't just big with the indie kids, those first two albums were massive full stop. Their first two singles (Dancefloor and When The Sun Goes Down) were the number one songs in the country, you put on an album track from the first album now and everyone still knows every word. In terms of a rock band they were a phenomenon that hadn't been seen since Oasis and certainly hasn't been seen since.

  • @westong6215
    @westong6215 7 месяцев назад +1

    One thing I’ll say about the debut is that you have to be in the mindset to get an extreme rush and positively rage. Otherwise I can understand why it wouldn’t be the experience you’d have liked. Also Riot Van and A Certain Romance is such good songwriting, I’m a little disappointed that Jason doesn’t recognize that.

    Dear Ole Sheffield: You’ve given me Heaven 17, ABC, The Human League, Pulp, Def Leppard, and The Full Monty. High expectations & overflowing nostalgia, so where shall we go from here? This band was a tiny blip on my sonar. “Stella” was still diving down, down, down there under the sea, and Alex Turner’s Yorkshire Yelp in “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” was GRATING to me at the time.
    Hadn’t I heard all of the post-punk/garage rock/dance punk revival bands that I needed to listen to already?!
    Better ones? 🤔
    In the same breath, It also makes no sense that I hadn’t paid attention to this band before, considering some of the similarities to their 00s contemporaries.
    I really think it was Alex’s (feral tomcat) ‘06 vocals that put me off. All I could think of were stale pints, punches to the face, and other unsavory lad acts. (What was so different about Kele Okereke’s sing-shout?! I was instantly smitten by Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm and their live performance in Atlanta, GA just one year earlier!)
    I went into this discography skeptical but eagerly anticipated something. It happened. There were moments when I was swept away by a catchy, feverish, and malicious current. At other times, the overly polished/produced sound just didn’t match up with the lyrics and Alex’s snark. There’s clearly something mystifying (and darkly humorous) in the polluted water of the River Sheaf. Other bands in a similar vein/era appeal to me more, but I still somewhat enjoyed myself. Alex’s lyrics, changes in vocal style and stage crawling antics kept me interested, but there was no real “click”.

    3 biggest bands of my youth were oasis, libertines (for short period) and arctic monkeys.
    Alto the Monkeys QOTSA vibe albums did well, the early two albums along with The Libertines debut and Oasis first 2 albums soundtracked so much of youth culture over those 10-15 years.
    Yet Americans never vibed with it.
    Wonder what the American equivalant is?

    Not really a fan of this band, except for AM and a few select songs. I wish I liked this band more than I actually do. I will admit that Alex Turner is a very good lyricist, but the actual music often doesn't impress me, and I prioritise music over lyrics. I will also say that even on the album I don't care for, they always have a few good songs on them.

    I haven't listened to too much of this band. In my mind I had Arctic Monkeys and Rogue Wave on the same tier. But I just checked and AM have around 50M "monthly listeners" on Spotify while RW are only at 664K. Had no idea AM was 75x more popular than RW. Incidentally, Killers are at 22M, Kings of Leon are at 16M, and Spoon are at only 1.6M -- truly surprised. White Rabbits are only at 34K... Not that any of this speaks to the quality of their art, but I'm thinking it speaks to notoriety at least.

    Interesting that Joe appreciated I bet that you look good on the dance floor so late. To me it was instantly a classic and clearly the best indie rocker of the year it came out, maybe even of the decade. Yes, they were overhyped and that can rub you the wrong way, maybe that was the case with both of you. I think they were indeed an outstanding and exciting band back then and deserved the attention.

    I've discovered a couple of things this week in my Arctic Monkeys dive. First, the one constant is that they, maybe more than anyone else I can think of right now, so often sound like other people. Sometimes, it's obvious who and at other times they wear their patchwork of influences so slyly, it gives me a mental itch. Best not to scratch too hard, and just enjoy.
    Second, if I had been 22 or younger in 2006, my opinion of their first three albums might well be very different. But I wasn't, so it isn't. For me, nothing there struggles free of the British indie straitjacket and I honestly feel no need to hear those albums ever again. The first signs of daring to be dreamy appear on Suck It And See, bide their time throughout the somewhat darker detour of AM, before emerging fully on Tranquility Base & Casino and The Car, each with its own distinctive palette.
    For me, there's a hair's width between Tranquility Base - or, as I like to think of it, Aladdin Insane and the Quaalude Phantoms of the Glam Cabaret - and The Car for the top spot. Is The Car lounge music? Well, yes, but it's the Scott Walker lounge with micro-dosed martinis and chilled shades, so I'll happily drift into dreams there as long as you keep topping up my drink.
    Never would have thought, listening to the Arctic Monkeys of 2006-09, that we'd end up with those two albums. But we have and they're two of the best I've heard in a long time. Probably not a popular view. But, then, I wasn't 22 or younger in 2006.
