Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is the sixth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 11 May 2018 by Domino Recording Company. It was written by band frontman Alex Turner in 2016 on a Steinway Vertegrand piano in his Los Angeles home. It was produced in Los Angeles, Paris and London by frequent Arctic Monkeys collaborator James Ford and Turner, alongside a wide array of guest musicians including Tom Rowley, Loren Humphrey, James Righton, Zach Dawes, Tyler Parkford and Cam Avery. Turner designed the album artwork himself, which depicts the resort with cardboard cut-outs and a tape recorder. Its title refers to Tranquility Base, the site of the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing.

This album is a masterpiece. It has multiple facets to it. It’s a satirical nod back to the hysteria surrounding the boom in Vegas when the casinos first hit the strip. Everything was excessive and over the top. Commercials were cheesy and casinos would have all kinds of weird and wonderful events to attract customers in. The Tranquility Base is used as a setting for the whole concept to offer a top level for casual listeners with Turner playing a nonchalant lounge singer which is reflected in his singing style in this album. He’s capable of more but it doesn’t fit the character. He sacrifices his usual vocal talents to remain true to concept.
Looking into it further, the whole album challenges our current obsessions with technology and how they take away from the way we lived pre-tech. Human connection has been affected. Community is digital. Life experiences are lived through a screen and not first-hand. He uses multiple references to science fiction movies and novels throughout to emphasise the powers of technology but also as a nod to the things he used to love and how time has passed on.
If you dig even deeper, you’ll find some of the most beautiful love songs ever written hidden beneath all the mastery.
Any lyrics you don’t understand, research them and you’ll respect Turner’s songwriting skills on a whole new level.

I have such a deep connection to this album. First listen was an easy skip for me. I didn't get it and I felt really, disappointed. Then when the pandemic started, I was alone, working at home, feeling afraid and bored as much as hundreds of us were too. Decided to revisit their whole discography, and when this album popped out my thoughts were... "hold on a minute". The melodies, sounds, lyrics and mostly the beautiful voice arrangements simply bewitched my soul. Can't remember how many times I've danced alone wearing a bathrobe and using my hairbrush as a microphone, listening to it's entirely. It moved me, and it helped me so much to get through the loneliness. I guess Turner's moon lounge at the Tranquily Base Hotel and Casino is a good stay for souls looking for some kind of solace, who didn't know exactly what to expect or to feel. That's why is my comfort album.
But I totally understand who can't feel the same about it. As Connor's commented, there's something about let the album grow as you listen again and again. And I absolutely adore to talk about it. Great video and amazing comments made by both of you, as always. I get Kevin's trouble with the lyrics, cause there's a lot of phrasing indeed, and the meaning of a lot of that is til this day, mysterious to me. Just felt a little sad cause I didn't expect that Golden Trunks would be Connor's least favorite song, hahaha. It's the best on the album for me, paired with the title track. And The Ultracheese does close it perfectly, with some of the greatest writing and vocals from AT.
    Thank you guys!

This album isn't meant to be easy on the ear. It's a complex work of introspection translated into musical science-fiction and it should be treated as such. The listener is warned at very beginning when given the hint to watch Blade Runner. This almost dystopian reality, hiding behind the flashy veil of wealth and technology represented by the hotel and casino, somehow makes me think of a PKD story, only from the point of view of the privileged. But that's just my personal trip.

It's not that natural a sequel to AM but it really ties together their discography as a whole if one knows all of it and has already heard Alex ask if he should build you a Go-Kart or recount his love for cowboy films.

The arctic monkeys easily could have just churned out more classic catchy rock for the rest of their career or they could create an immersive, unique and fascinating album that defies all expectations. Interesting point to note, that Alex even brings up in Science Fiction, he himself questions whether his lyrics are 'too clever' for their own good. Too convoluted to get his message across. I think a lot of the songs are trying to tell a narritive and so in this have less of a routine flow or cycle and tend to meander along. I gave it a few goes and came to love Star Treament and One Point Perspective for the pictures they paint.

I absolutely love this album. When it first came out I’ve I wasn’t sold but over the last 4 years it’s grown to be my favourite monkeys album. You should watch the video “The Arctic Monkeys’ Misunderstood Masterpiece” by Middle 8. It’s a deep dive into Alex Turner’s inspirations for the album and the headspace he was in at the time whilst dealing with writers block (the Lola line is to do with writers block). Goes a long way to helping understand the album.

@@sharinglungs3226 it is good and there’s no doubting that but sometimes music, as it’s an art form, takes time to understand and appreciate. sometimes at first listen/glance u don’t catch enough and it requires more listens to fall in love with. it’s nearly impossible to pick something as ur favorite album after only hearing it once and not knowing what it’s about. if u want to appreciate something u gotta take time with it and learn about it. that’s how I’ve grown to love this album as well as hundreds of others. music is a beautiful thing fr

I think the reason why I like this album so much is because it makes you put in the effort to understand it. That might be tedious to some, but for me it really enhances the experience and makes the album much more memorable. These tunes stay with me because there is so much to dissect. The impact is so much bigger this way. Alex Turners lyrics are incredible once you dive into them. This is an album that definitely requires multiple listens and grows on you over time.
I also think this album explores Alex Turners vocals fantastically, something that the previous albums don't really dive into as much. Over the years he's really improved and elevated his singing, which you can totally hear on this record.
I would love to see you guys react to the whole AM discography actually, as well as both Shadow Puppets records, if you guys are up for it! I think Kevin would really like the first Monkey's album and Humbug, and both of the Shadow Puppets albums!

Saw them again this August; they played One Point Perspective and had Tranquility Base as the first of their encore! Just to give you some insight :) Sounds fantastic live- especially as they play a lot of hard hitting stuff like Brianstorm and Pretty Visitors (which Matt Helders does BRILLIANTLY. The focus is just all on him)

Still is. Perfection imo, 'Four Out of Five' is sheer bliss, like listening to a Bowie song

When I listen to it now, I get immersed in the world of it instead & that's why it's one of my favorites that I revisit all the time. The imagery in my head while listening is almost always this large hotel bar with fancy yet minimal lighting, with hardly anyone there except for the band playing and a bartender in a clean suit. And now more people are finally starting to appreciate its genius. For me it’s their best album along with the debut, and probably one of the most polarising of all time, in the best possible way. Especially post-The Car, I can’t help thinking this is a true magnum opus from Alex Turner. Perhaps his most ambitious, brilliant and cohesive work

This is my favourite album of all time. I remember being on holiday when it came out and was baffled as to why the sound was so different, it really does take a while to get the taste for the concept. I really recommend anyone that has a first listen to come back to it after a while and listen to it with closed eyes, you need that time to grasp that it's going to be a different sound and this is their sound now. Something worth noting is that there was a pretty decent gap between albums so things change, especially when you listen to the last shadow puppets and read that TBH+C was heavily piano influenced and Alex didn't really have a place for main guitar focused riffs as it wasn't fitting the concept, saying that - the guitar they managed to squeeze in is perfection, very Humbug era riffs over a spacey theme, love it.
    Batphone is my absolute favourite.
