Being Funny in a Foreign Language is the fifth studio album by English band The 1975. It was released on 14 October 2022. The album was recorded primarily at Real World Studios in Wiltshire. The band released the lead single "Part of the Band" on 7 July 2022, which was followed by the subsequent singles "Happiness", "I'm in Love with You" and "All I Need to Hear".

ive been listening to the 1975 since 2013, they really have changed my life in ways i cannot even begin to describe. being funny is a stellar album that came out and the exact right time for me and I'm endlessly grateful. so happy to see others enjoy it too

What's always impressed me, and you can hear it on caroline, is that since Chocolate they've managed to keep a very very familiar beat. Like Matty doesn't even need to sing, musicially you know it's them

There’s something so sweet about the fact I’m watching a father and son listening to music, and the dad talking about how remembering his son in high school and then educating himself on how to understand him and this day and age. Like this so so wholesome and I love it

@outerspace garage sale you can definitely hear the Jack influence on this album. Some songs sound like they were taken from Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night but with Matt's lyrics and melodies
Jack antanof also helped produce it and u can really feel his influence on the album which made it even better
Matty is such a candid writer; by showing his heart he helps you open your own.
this is so well said. I recently made it a point to become more vulnerable because of matty. he shows no fear when doing so, so why should I?. amazing artist.

Hey! I have some fun insights into the song "About You"! They are my favorite band of all time and About You has moved up pretty far in my favorite songs of all-time list.
So, Carly (the girl who is the other vocals in the song) is the wife of Adam, one of the band members of the 1975. But the fun thing is, she’s never done any other music or songs professionally. Then Adam posted that story on the night of the release, and it’s the first time he’s ever posted about her/their kid. And she has sung her part only once live, in Toronto! Only after Matty constantly pestered her throughout the tour. ;)

@@leinad95 Nope! It’s Carly. Phoebe had some credits here and there throughout the album and a cameo in one of the music videos, but no vocals as far as I know.

@@diether7 I think their first two albums were insane, and then they kinda fell off, kinda going down the “Eminem” route with the way his career and attitude went, but this album was a good solid return to form.
Their self titled will forever be their best.

Happiness strikes me as that song which best represents the 1975’s complex sound. Sax included, beautifully obnoxious lyrics (not so much in this track tho), that 80s sound. Of course they experiment much outside of this sound but hearing this track you instantly think THAT’S THE 1975. They are brilliant, I urge you guys to explore more of their records.

Completely agree on “Oh Caroline” sounding like a Toto track. The chords feel very similar to Africa and you can hear it from the first listen. Great song
I’m glad you didn’t cut Carly’s verse in About You and kept it whole on this video. Her singing voice is magical

This album is amazing to me. It's not bloated, it's very sonically cohesive and all of the ideas presented musically and lyrically make sense. It all works together amazingly. I don't dislike any tracks on this album. There's maybe 2 or 3 that I don't prefer as much as the rest, but even those are good listens when they come up. I genuinely give this album an *8/10.* My favorite project of theirs to date.
Also, on your own time, you guys NEED to check out the Official Live Performances of "Looking For Somebody", "Part of the Band", and "Oh Caroline." They're absolutely incredible. Truly.

I actually saw the 1975 live over thanksgiving. They closed with Give Yourself A Try, an older song of theirs. Insane show.
Saw them in Mexico City over thanksgiving as well. Incredible show, they opened with if you’re too shy let me know and it blew my socks off

I went to my second 1975 concert on december 6th in denver, I’m also seventeen years old so it was a very emotional concert because of the opening track. I made a sign that said “I’m living and I’m seventeen!” Because despite how crazy this world is, everything i’ve been through, the nervousness about my future, I am happy to be alive and in this world

He would love so many of their tracks
This album will go down as a masterpiece in the next decade or so. It is truly their best work. I absolutely adore it. The aesthetic, the sounds, the instrumentation, the lyrics.
The only other album to take me on a proper journey is American Idiot. I am always sobbing at When We Are Together, mainly for personal reasons and the attachment I have but everyone has their own reasons. Loved the video.
I saw them in Minneapolis and they closed their show give yourself a try from their album “a brief inquiry into online relationships!!” it was really interesting bc for the first half of the show they played the whole new album minus human too (they intermixed a few old songs in), they did this intermission method acting thing, and then did their greatest hits for the second half. It was super unique. If you ever have a chance to see them live I highly recommend it!!
The 1975 is pop done tastefully with excellent production and musicianship to boot. Matty is one of the best frontmen in music today.
On another note: Highly recommend checking out young British rocker Sam Fender - a modern day Bruce Springsteen that is supremely talented and writes all his own songs.

was feeling nostalgic since tour ended 2 weeks ago and i was lucky enough to attend the incredibly special closing night show, so even though i already watched this when it came out i like having these on in the background. when it came to about you & you guys talked about how it would be a great closing song my jaw dropped and it immediately took me back to that night cause they actually used it to close off the entire tour, even though they had not done that before the entire tour, and it was so so so special & emotional :')

if i remember correctly the message of wintering is actually the opposite of what you two pictured it as. (i think they mention it on the spotify stories underneath the song)
matty mentioned that despite the chaotic and clashing nature he finds comfort in seeing everybody together to celebrate christmas, but i also heavily agree with what you guys said as well
one more thing i’ll add is if you ever show him Notes, he’ll be SHOCKED to hear People 😭

This is easily their most concise and mature album, and maybe their best overall. This band has grown on me a ton. Went into their Portland show this year as a casual fan, and left a major fan. They sound insanely good live!

I‘m a huge huge The 1975 fan. My first tattoo was a the 1975 tattoo. Even tho I mostly listen to rap and other genres they give me a feeling I only get from their music. I startet watching you guys since part 1 of the To pimp a butterfly reaction and I am a patreon member for I don‘t even know how long now. This right here feels surreal watching you guys listening to the 1975 and it is the absolute best new years gift I could think about. I had a very very rough couple years and went through a lot of very dark times. Lately luckily things startet to get a lot better and I‘ve felt kind of happy again for a very long time. This right here made me so incredibly happy and I am so grateful to you that I came across this channel back then.

Third time seeing them in concert and when I tell you it’s one of those bands that just make you emotional. Their concerts are just fucking beautiful. My favorite band of all time and I was so happy to see this video 💕

So cool to see this band reach all generations. I'm likely right in between your ages. It really is just music that makes you feel good. Like that line buried in the mix in "I'm In Love with You" after the bridge that says, "Everyone's having a great time!" That's what their music is. I've loved this band since 2013.

the video is masterfully edited. You kept the parts of the song that the fans liked even you weren't making a comment etc. The editor knows their stuff on what to keep.

I saw them in Toronto in December and since their current tour is “BFIAFL & At Their Very Best” it’s essentially two shows in one. They closed the first portion of the show with “When We Are Together” and finished the show with “Give Yourself a Try” from ABIIOR. It was a beautiful experience, they are such great performers, and the album sounded just as amazing live! So glad you guys got to it 😊❤

I've been waiting for this!! One of my top albums of the year and one of the best from my favorite band! The 1975 make beautifully and THOUGHTFULLY crafted pop music! Loved this video so much! And yes u need to give the bass player (Ross) some love, he's an AMAZING bass player.

This was the best album of 2022. Time will tell, but I think this will end up as one of my favorite albums of all time.
Also, since you guys enjoyed this so much, I highly recommend checking out bleachers’ album “take the sadness out of Saturday night” Jack Antonoff is the frontman of Bleachers and he is the one who mixed/produced this album along with Matty and George!!
Saw someone else suggesting to do a brief inquiry next, as far as more the 1975. I second that, it would probably be the best bridge into their old music. Hope to see that or another album of theirs soon!

My favorite album of 2022 for sure, I wasnt sure about it but watching you guys go back and and listening to the tracks really made me realize that every single song on this record was fantastic. I think the tempo of the album speeding up and slowing down along the way was perfect and the lyrical content really hit home for me.
