    Hobgoblins really being the perfect evil villain archetype.
    Cruel, vicious, but intelligent and polite in a public setting.

    I love me a hobgoblin war wizard (volo's version). You get armor and weapons so you can go full gish, arguably better than a bladesinger. Amd with moderately armored for a shield and medium armor you are actually super tanky.
    And personally I like int as opposed to charisma. While they are leaders of goblinoids this I feel is largely because unlike the base goblins or bugbears, they actually posess the discipline to form a proper society. I see them as rigid, logical and calculating. The are polite, but stiff, never radiating warmth or friendship. This doesn't represent that same sort of universal force of presence that charisma does and I think might be somewhat offputting to outsiders, especially those of more laid back cultures like halflings and gnomes.

      I think you nailed it. There great leaders not because they inspire there troops, there great leaders because they know tactics and war, the win by putting the right people on the right place. Fighting on the right fronts. Volos really shows that with the intelligence bonus.

    In the D&D lore, the war god Maglubiyet wiped out most of the goblinoid pantheon, leaving only those that would serve him, and made Hobgoblins specifically his soldiers. What if this is the reason they aren’t benevolent anymore like they were in mythology?
    Anyway, great video, Hobgoblins are also my favorite.

    I've heard that hobgoblin basically means "house goblin" so I like making them members of noble houses in my worlds (even though that wasn't the intent of the folklore). Mechanically they fit the role perfectly

    • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  10 месяцев назад

      They are the nobles of the goblinoids. There fae influence tends to really represent that. I fully support it!

      I like that as well. One of my favorite characters to play is a hobgoblin with the noble background because he is the son of his clan's warlord. This means a great deal is expected of him as mere birth afords you nothing, but he is expected to flourish so as not to shame or embarass his father. He is trained in statecraft and even diplomacy as hobgoblins are organized and disciplined enough to know that to win a war it can be incredibly valuable to know how not to pick fights you don't want. And of course he and his siblings adventure to ammas power and resources for the clan to prove themselves worthy of the throne of warlord should their father fall.

    Currently using a motmv version of the Hobgoblin as a wizard. In fact, I just used the fortune of the many feature to save my ass on a saving throw last session.
    Underrated racial choice for PCs. Debating my subclass at the moment. Necromancer or Chrono.
    Both kind of fit my backstory, and it’s a long term campaign going to lvl 20+.
    Decisions, decisions…

    • @TheSinisterheroes

      Personally I’d pick necromancy. Literally cus I would be lying to my self that I would be happy doing anything else. Your a wizard just be smart about what spells your preparing and try and get as much info about the places your about to go so your really on point. When in doubt send a skeleton to trigger the traps.

      Cause they’ve been trying to more away from the perceived notion that any race is “inherently Evil”…

      @TheSinisterheroes  Год назад +1

    • @derpherp1810
      @derpherp1810 Год назад +1

      @@akmi1931 Yeah but it excludes new people to hobby, by making it a little more obvious no race is inherently evil and changing some aspects it opens up more people to the hobby. The real problem is the people who complain and are too narrow minded and want to gatekeep the community. I welcome change, but plenty don't because they fear it for no damn good reason.

    • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  Год назад

      I think the reasoning why people don’t want the species to no longer be inherently evil is because the groups no longer look the same. The older you go the parties we’re basically human elf dwarf. And later on you could be other things but it was a big penalty to do so. Now it’s a motley crew of monstrous and uncommon species. I am currently in a party with a half orc an earth genasie a triton a Tiefling a Goliath and a gnome. Not a human or elf has been in that game for ever.
      I think that’s a big part of it. Cus if the uncommon species are pure evil then you can’t play them, and henceforth your more likely a common species.

    Nice guide. Thrashing.out a hobgoblin paladin at the moment, just not quite sure which oath I want him to take. Probably either conqueror or crown, most of the others need some serious backstory work to be explainable. Its an old hobgob, has save face and no fey gift, but not the volo one with the weird int focus (cos he wants to be a wizard/artificer, and by lore they dont like magic much)

    I think aesthetically the hobgoblins are cool but there is no beauty in their society. If they see use in you, its transactional in nature. Hobgoblins see their own kind not as people but as tools, if it breaks or outlives its usefulness its cast aside or shunned. To be honest Hobgoblins are just a reflection of our modern world. If you are disabled, if you don't want to work, you are a waste of resources to be cast aside. Everything is domination and mutual exploitation. The sad part is, people see this as the norm and cannot imagine anything better than this which is why I get annoyed when people start saying "I liked it when orcs and drow were just evil in the first place". Its just lazy worldbuilding and to me a little problematic.

    • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  Год назад +2

      I guess we differ on perspective a little. Not saying your wrong by any means. In fact you are probably more correct than I am. I just see this wonderful beauty to how they define value. It’s not pretty it’s not kind. The fact that your own personal merit can bring about greatness I find almost romantic.
      So those aspects to me really drawn me into them. They don’t have love but they do have respect and even polite attitudes, they also don’t wish to die in combat, so there is a sense of value in others and one’s self. So maybe there is something that is there version of appreciation and caring that exists.
      Don’t get me wrong I am more guessing that seeing anything written stating it just me hoping for it.

    • @derpherp1810
      @derpherp1810 Год назад +1

      @@TheSinisterheroes I still think their society is interesting, just for different reasons because according to what you said I see alot of modern parallels. I like the idea of maybe playing as a hobgoblin only to be an outcast and join some clandestine goblinoid organization that seeks to fight back against the injustice and build a better tommorow.

      If you don’t want to work then you are a waste of resources. People have to work to secure those resources, if you are only taking and not giving then you don’t have a community, you have slaves.
      In addition, I would say that is your perspective of their society and that doesn’t have to be true, looking at Hobgoblin society they can be a band of brothers like in our own military with our own vets.
      Orcs and Drow as a whole can be evil, that is their culture as decreed by the gods they worship, and to say they have to be like you is honestly problematic. That said, it also doesn’t have to be their culture, as a DM you could have Orcs or Drows that broke away and decided to be like humans, the clearly superior race.
