    I love teaching people how to paint!
    I created The Idaho Painter as an alternative to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to teach everyone across the globe how to paint from the non-experienced to the long time professional. No experience is necessary. My channel is for the home improvement person, DIY painter, handyman professional, home and garden enthusiast, and even the professional painter.

    The door looks like new but this is just a suggestion, I don't always toss out my shower liners because they make good disposable drop cloths for messy spray painting.

  • @tamoose1
    @tamoose1 10 лет назад +7

    Another thing to know is that even though you are spraying clear, you need drops on the grass. The clear finish seals the grass and kills it leaving you with a brown rectangle your customers will not like.

    Great Video! I haven't seen one where someone glazed an exterior door. I actually made a video on my channel of using M.L. Campbell Products to stain, glaze, and finish cherry cabinet doors.

    I would like to refinish my front door and you make it look very easy. Do you ever have a problem with the first coat of stain on the original polyurethane not sticking. Also the door looks great.

    I am completely new to all this and I need to do this to my front entry door also. My question is: what is the difference between a stain and a glaze? Should I clear coat or lacquer? Thank you and that door came out amazing. I'm a big fan of your videos.

    • @Idahopainter
      @Idahopainter  7 лет назад +6

      Lacquer is a clear coat. If you put glaze on wood that has no clear coat it will turn the wood almost black. Glaze is meant to go over a clear coat. Stain is meant to go on bear wood

    Great videos Chris. I'm a builder by trade and do a lot of painting however I like watching a pro such as yourself. Question for you. Was this door a wood door or fiberglass? Would this technique work with worn (sun bleached) fiberglass? I'd hate to screw up a customers door lol:)!!!

    I would suggest Stripping front door. sanding. Apply wipping stain. Vynl sanding sealer. sand, topcoat, sand topcoat again.. All could be done withing 4 hours tops..and finish is perfect everytime.

    Hi CHRIS, on this video you are using a water based base coat before glazing, yet on another similar video you highly stress the need for a lacquer base coat before glazing. Is either water or lacquer base coat before glazing acceptable.?

    i used a minwax stain and didnt let it dry long enough. When I put the hellmsman clear on it starting blistering when the sun hit it. Had to resand the entire door.

    If the customer likes, all that matters. Just understand what he is doing here. Almost nothing about this is what, or how, you would want for a high-end wooden door. This is just a quick/easy makeover for a worn door. It has its place.

      It is a transparent coating that you add after painting or staining

    I've always underpromised and overdelivered. If they've let a stained door fade and dry out and their expectations are for a glamorous new look, I'd tell them they need to go buy a $1500 door. It looks great for what it is.

    This guy is a joke. You dont stain on top of urethane and claiming that leaving a lot of stain stuck in the corners gives it an antique look. You dont spray urethane from three feet away. I am guessing he tells customers that he has how-to videos on facebook.
