I’m in Montana and my Walmart has nothing like that. About 3 sides of the aisle and some of that is boating. It’s also an hour and a half away. Most of the Walmart stuff I get is online.
Went fishing at a Pay-As-You-Go site yesterday (5/31/23), and, using only Nightcrawlers, ended up catching some rather nice-sized Bluegill and Red-Ear Sunfish, and a Largemouth Bass, somewhere between 10-12 inches long. Just had myself some fun. This site is known for having some really big Bass, Catfish, and Sunfish in it. My biggest Largemouth Bass was around, I'm guessing, 3 pounds, so that ain't bad. However, some of the Bluegill at this site are VERY Large, and I've caught at least one or two of them, that easily weighed 1 to 1 1/2 pounds! You couldn't come even close to wrapping your hand around them, to unhook them, and release them. You just had to hold them the best that you could, and hope that they didn't fin the fire out of you! They were huge, at least a couple of them seemed to be at least a foot long! I love catching them like that! They're great fighters!
Agreed! Just don't forget the ol' State License. Ya don't need "Big Brother" taking your gear away for not having one! Those guys are very strict, and it can definitely cost ya a lot of money, in terms of confiscated gear, and fines and Court costs, and such.
That was a really fun video! From store to shore! You must be one of those who’s blessed to not be allergic to poison ivy! I feel like I get the stuff just by looking at it and you’ve walked right through it. Fun trip! Thanks for taking us along!
I picked up there lews hank parker series 6 foot rod n reel combo i put 6 to 8 pound test on it. Ive caught catfish panfish crappie an skipjack an small bass an a walleye on it still works just fine i just loosen the drag on them big fish an ive had it going on 5 years now.
Most fish I ever caught in one day in the creek was on those trout magnets. A 9” largemouth also bit it. Also I’m digging “Separate Ways” by Journey playing over the Wal-Mart speakers
I have found people never check the clearance isle at Walmart first this year I spent less than 100 dollars and have well over 500-600 dollars in tackle even picked up a 4'6 micro combo with reel for less than $20.00 as always love your content and showing real people what reel fishing is about and how to get the best for every dollar spent and how to find quality for quality fun 💯
I would have to say that most of my rods and reels are at least 25 years old. Back when I worked at a sports and outdoor store and got a discount. Plus I tagged all the clearance items and found the best deals. My 2 main rods are both Ugly Sticks although I think it might be time to add another one to the arsenal since a lot of the eyelets are losing their liners. I have to say they have held up pretty good.
I’ve been using Trout SOS in 4lbs lately and it’s really good line. Seems tougher than 4lbs for sure. I also have a mold shaped like the Bobby garland plastic you have there and it absolutely kills it.
Although you went over budget this is a great store shelf to creek video brother. I've still got and fish with 2 mid-range rods like that. For around $100 you can be fishing in no time. Keep it simple at first, few crankbaits and plastics with some jigs and hooks. White, pumpkin/green and bait fish colors in a couple sizes and you're off for the outdoors. Blessings John.
Glad you chose the Shimano. I would have gone with the Ugly Stik. Next purchase challenge should be with a set amount of money and try to come in Under. Always pleasant viewing John.
Now this was fun. Good info and help to pick out the good stuff without breaking the bank. Hopefully we will see you using that rooster tail on the next one.
I've got a Shimano ultra light reel I have had for 25+ yrs and it still works great. I'm not sure they still make them like that anymore. This is a great video!
Great video John. You don’t have to spend much to get a decent setup for creeks and have a great time. The higher $$$ reels will last longer and be smoother, but the setup you put together will work fine. 6 lb mono is my go-to for panfish and small bass.
Just had to leave another comment that was a great walk through it all at Walmart. I do that same thing. By the way I bought the ultra light and I bought the one that you are using right now. I put the Phlueger fishing reel That you were looking at it Walmart. But I put it on an ultra light power 5'6"works real well. Excellent video john loved every second of it.
I actually bought and use that $25 diawa g shock combo. The rod has good flexibility. I’ve caught trout, largemouth, bluegill, crappie, and a few small channel cats in it. I did change the line as soon as I got it though. Spoiled it with 6lb mono.
Great work! I love your content, you've got the right energy and you keep me hooked (no pun intended). Creek fishing is probably one of my favorite ways of catching fish.
Since my early days when I learned a couple of good lessons about cheap reels, especially I've tried to buy the best equipment I could afford. I still have several that are twenty-five years old and work like new. Quantum reels are very durable in bait casters and Shimano in open face!!.....can't go wrong!@
I’ve purchased about six of the $10 Zebco spinning rod/reel combos, not the thumb-caster. I just swap out the cheap line for quality line. Between my friends/family and me, we’ve caught 30-40 triploids bank fishing with them the past few years. The reels are a bit cheap, but they work.
The Mitchell AvoSlab is a fun rod and reel combo to catch these types of fish. When not crappie fishing with it, I'll put the reel on a 6 foot rod and catch all species. Fun to hook into a decent sized bass and fight it in.
I've always stood by my 22 dollar Shakespeare cirrus combo 6 foot 6. It's perfect for the creek. It won't win you a tournament but it will catch anything in the creek.
John I love these creek fishing video's. I got a new reel set up for crappy fishing. It's just about the same weight and reel size as you just got. I picked up a cherrywood 6ft med action rod with a 1000 size bass pro Stamped reel. It's a blast to use catching crappy on. Thanks for video's and keep them coming.
That's a great rod & reel, I got a cheap 13$ combo at Ollie's a month ago, put braid to fluro on it & went brim fishing yesterday it did fine, I actually bought it for my cousin he don't fish that much, that's a great wading creek for sure, creek fishing for brim is a lot easier than on a lake in my opinion, great video!🎣👍
I have watched this before. I'm trying temu 😂, checking out stuff just to see if it's as good as More expensive stuff. Of course I'm fishing for pleasure, but still want good stuff.❤ Loved watching your shopping and fishing 🎣
Shakespeare Durango is a perfectly fine rod. I have the 2UL and use it a lot. I use Mr. Crappie 4lb test. It doesn't tangle as much as other inexpensive 4lb test.
Ok...... I am going to your wally world for my next fishing trip. Forget fishing I am going to spend the day there. This store has way better selection than any in NORTHERN VA.
When you walked up and touched the rod rack and the random rod fell out. I was like yep every time. 😂 I'm glad you found a combo you are happy with. When you said the 8 dollar or what ever the ultra cheap set up was will catch fish. That is literally all I Take when I fish from a kayak just in case it falls in or walks away. Never lost one but it's bound to happen and I'd rather loose that than one with value be it literal or sentimental.
My Gf and I use the Ozark trail Rod and Reel combos, I have a Shakespeare Rod and reel combo, and A Tiger Cat Combo, all bought from Walmart for under that magic 20$ not all bought at the same time, have had most of our Rods and Reels for at least 3 yrs some for as long as 10 yrs. Never a problem have caught all sorts of fish on them..... we fish from the bank and agree would rather lose a inexpensive rod and reel as opposed to a High $ set up.... Just sayin
@@allanpatterson1894 Good to know the Ozark trail rod and reel combo is reliable I might have to pick one up. I've got three Shakespeare combos I picked up at Academy a few years ago for twelve dollars apiece. I use some Combos I got from my dad they are almost as old as I am from the bank occasionally. I have a really expensive bait caster I bought when I was in high school that has not been used in almost as long. Most of my combos are cheap spin casts. They get the job done.
Great video from store to fishing. Green punkin is my go to worm 🪱, rooster tails I find will catch just about anything. That was a nice rod and reel you put together. I have several ugly sticks and love them. Ty for sharing 😊
It really depends on the area.. if it’s trout stocked you will find more trout stuff ..Walmart does research the area on fishing to offer a better variety to compete with bigger fishing stores
started using ultra-lite back in illinois cuz most fish were small, when i moved to s.fl. the ultra-lite was put away until i met a guy made his own rods. he gave me a old 7' ultra-lite rod that i put an old reel with 4 lb on, would use it on local canals to catch bream & specs but i hooked into some nice bass with it, biggest was 6lb - that was a rush & 1/2!! luv yer channel keep on fishin!!!!!!!!!!!

My Walmart has a Lew’s Mr. crappie CRUSH’R combo for $25. I have several of the Mr. crappie ultra lights from before the buyout and I love em! The CRUSH’R in my opinion is the cheapest and best ultra light combo I have ever bought. I’m about to buy a couple more to just have extras.
This year I plan on trying a different style of creek fishing. When most people hear your taking a bait caster to a creek they think your insane. But I have got into the world of BFS.
Great video and great adventure buddy! Enjoyed watching! Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend. Keep doing what you do! #CreekFishingAdventures rocks!
Love your video's, this one is especially fun! I literally just did this a few weeks ago. Set a $100 budget, went into a Bass Pro and cam out with a decent rod reel setup. I really like the one you put together here. Might go out and get this one.
I recently picked up that same rod but as a combo with a Lews speed spin reel. Great little combo that with a few other odds and ends came to $55. I’ve got it set up with 6lb braid and 4lb leader and have been playing with a micro Texas rig with Mule plastics. Lots of fun.
Creme frisky frogs are a great 1 dollar bait. On a 16th jig head you're golden. They work really well amd there isn't any other frog really like it. Specially size wise
John, I was wondering if the fish were back after TWRA cleaned out the dam. Did you try to go up stream any. Curious what it is like where WB cleared the creek. Great video
I can knor tell you how much I love fishing with my little ones I don't know what I would do I'f I woke up every day and they weren't there, that would be really ruff, I'd rather ride through the dessert on a horse with no name, can't be pig headed when it comes to your kids
I just got the Lew's Xfinity medium light with a size 10 reel and put 6 lbs line work good. I gut don't like line if I can just break it with my hands. So I've got 6lbs line my dad would use 4lbs line but I've seen him lose fish. One for trout, catfish, bass fishing 🎣 I think 6lbs is the smallest. Sunfish for catfish ya boy the best bait.
Love the openings in your office, but if you could do this OCD guy one favor... Straighten out your basketball so that "Wilson" is level (PARALLEL) with the rim. I'll be checking your next videos to see if you did this for me, and I'll feel the BROTHERLY love if you do! Cool idea for a video! WalMart is a tough place to get quality gear though. Usually very limited in selection. You picked out the rod and reel I would have as I watched you go through the options. I do use 4 lb. Spiderwire though. You also picked lures (trout magnet) I would have chosen also, but I would have got the YUM dingers for the bass attack. I loved how you said if I went back I would get different stuff. I can kind of relate to that also. I do 8 lb. J-Braid for my line and 4 lb. spider (or 2 lb. Trilene Sensation if I'm pretty sure they won't be any or too many big bass) for a 1.5 ft leader. (I use 8 lb. spider mono for my leader if I think there will be some larger bass) All in all, I think what you chose would make an excellent starter kit for someone who isn't sure if they will like lite tackle fishing or not, or if you just need to buy on a budget. (not that you need my stamp of approval. Just agreeing!) That Shimano reel seemed to work out pretty well. That Red Breast that hit the crank bait was gorgeous! Nice video. I like how you tried the different lures. That creek was pretty productive! Blessings!
Gulp 1” minnow and the smallest jig head you can find will catch almost anything you want. Crazy simple yet affective setup
Truth!!!
Shoot, they are $5 for a 10 pack at my Walmart, I wanted to try them but the sticker shock got me haha
Your Walmart has more of a selection than the one in my area.
How bout it! That Walmart is like 10 times more fishing gear than mine here in the Chicago burbs. Walmarts down south are so much better!
Yea I noticed this too. My store is almost empty in fishing supply's
I live in the same state as him but different counties and my Walmart is loaded with good fishing gear and his blows mine out the water still
Never hurts to add to the collection. Thanks for showing us how its done.

Blessings!
