I lost more fish using a soft rod, all of it was my father’s fault for he liked a softer rod. When I started making more money as I grew up I finally spent the money buying a rod with a heavier action and I know I started to catch more fish. I told my father this and he said I was crazy and I told him use it for a while and before long he said he was wrong. I really miss my favorite fishing partner!
Old geezer fishing. I am getting old and I just can't brake brush or get too far into water.... plus living on SSI. Gear for 100$ is a good deal........... Semper Fi
My kinfolk live all around you. You have fished in the same water that i have since i was a kid. Best i can tell you live one road east of my Grand parents. Great content. Fish more.
Everyone has done a "$100" budget challenge. It's almost like a right of passage for youtube fishermen. But this was fun and enjoyable. Also. Don't sleep on the Shimano Sedona, it's an awesome reel for $30! Thanks for the entertainment John. God bless.
Really showed the ebb and flow of fishing there John. One minute smashing bass, the next stumbling in the creek. I know we all can relate to days like this. Sorry to say it made me chuckle a little lmao. Be well!
I gave all my family and friends permission to laugh at my follies even while fishing. The only stipulation is you darn well better check on my wellbeing first....then let's laugh at me together 😅😅😅. You could be next...
Believe it or not the hardest decision for either a beginner or expert angler is walking through the fishing area in any sports store and trying to select the gear and making the best decision for a fishing challenge lol! Fun video John thanks for sharing tight lines take care and God bless!
Used an 1/8 ounce jig with a little white grub for the first time last Saturday as I see you using alot I've have always been a spinner guy love blue fox but omg I caught everything in that river ty
I miss living in Tennessee and this type of fishing. The only thing you didn't do for me was to stop in a country store for one of those hand made bologna and cheese mom and pop sandwiches with a coke, a bag of chips and a Goo-Goo Cluster. Good times!
I like buying a much fishing equipment from business making there stuff here in the states but I enjoy following you because river fishing is my fun type of fishing. Love your channel John.
A soft rod(medium weight/moderate action) with the stretch of mono allows the fish to swallow the whole bait by the time you set the hook. Works great with swimbaits and crankbaits.
I got a challenge for you. I bought another 60-year-old Pfluger Supreme, making about 25 of those old timers I have. Load up one of those on an equally old 5' fiberglass or steel rod and see if you can catch a fish with that. No free spool, no drag except your thumb. Be sure to use a larger plug or it doesn't go too well when used to a nice Shimano Curado or even a cheap Black Max .
That was fun and glad you didn't bust yourself up too bad. Brother i started getting spinning gear from Wally world over 30 years ago when a combo like you selected was about 10 bucks cheaper and still have the old Shimano Stimula Magnumlite in 6 ft 2 piece. It's caught river smallies, walleye, largemouth bass on Power worms and still a great feeling rod. And nothing wrong with original Stren in 10# and under. Love the challenge. How about a 5 lure challenge but only using lures that viewers and subscribers sent you??? Blessings John
Had to chuckle at 2:43 when you looked at that orange Lews reel and rod, as thats the exact reel I bought three of to replace the #500 Sienna reels I had when I was down there last year.. Even got them at the same Walmart! That set up with 30 pound braid is my perfect combo for Pickeral up here in the Pocono Mts. of PA ! Even got a 5+ pound Largemouth on that set up! Got the idea from your prior videos on some of the Lews reels you were using... Thanks!
Those first couple of smallmouth bass were feisty!!! The Lews Lite Speed pre spooled reel is super solid that you talked about when shopping!! It's about the only reel I use because it's soooooooo reliable!!! Epic video buddy 👌 😎
I got my first smallie in a while the other day on the Beaver River at the Townsend hydroelectric dam off of a shiner. I was using my 13 Fishing 6'6" medium spinning combo with 15 lb multicolor braid.
I loved the video, you are a blessing! Have you ever considered demo videos for young lure companies? I recently got some headbanger lures, hadn’t heard of them before, and I’ve been really impressed. I got an ad for them on Facebook. Since ordering those, now I’m getting bombarded with ads from small lure companies
Love ur videos Sir the Shimano Combo for $21 u can’t go wrong it’s a quick fire cons it doesn’t have anti reverse but u could step up the line choice and ur pick of lures imo
True I even use the Shimano 2500HG in saltwater catching jacks and snappers even Spanish Mack’s and it has never let me down I even left it on the roof of my car and dropped it on the main street went and picked it back up a little scratched slightly bend handle that I straightened and it’s still smooth as butter and works like a dream and probably has one of the best and smoothest drag systems🔋🔥
great video and great fishing!! look like you had a great time!! great idea and might go to Walmart and look for fishing stuff too someday soon. have a good day and week. congratulations 160k subscribers!
I've caught tons of SMB of all sizes in Pepacton reservoir in NY using a $60 Shimano on a $45 Ugly Stick, with 8lb test. Also used a cheapie UL with 4lb test
Dude if you've never tried Joe's flies, inline spinner.... they will tear them up from sunfish to rock bass to even smallmouth. Caught a really nice smallmouth creek fishing the other day. I've used them for years here in East TN. Trout will also tear them up. Best ones I've found is the firetiger blade one. And the wooly booger I think it's called
Almost forgot how horrible the Walmart fishing selection was. Thankfully with the internet you can special order all the custom tackle you need fast and easy. Still with the prices today you bought a fair amount of stuff. Love the channel.
$100 challenge worked 2-3 years ago, now minimum you have to do the $250 challenge, with inflation! I always wait to find bargains, but I don’t have a RUclips channel.
Where I live in northern California, in Walmart to target, all these stuff are locked. From almost everything you need from over the counter are all locked inside. You gotta press the button for assistance. People steal everyday
I have that shimano reel, on a shimano rod that came as a compete from Walmart for dirt cheap. It’s my dedicated bass setup. That, combined with the name brand inline spinners from Walmart have caught me quite a few bass, one was pretty big but I didn’t have a scale. Got a good photo though. Most of my stuff is Walmart or vintage. My two saltwater setups are cheap 8’ heavier rods from Walmart, paired up with 2 different size rated Temu reels and braided line. You should try a Temu challenge next and get rod/reel/line/hooks and all from there
I've watched a number of other YT boatless fishing videos and they've also commented on how tough the fishing has been. Wonder if some of it is a byproduct of overfishing due to COVID and/or increased use of finder aides like drones & FFS? Just a theory, great video BTW Josh. Keep up the good work.
I know smallmouth are super aggressive, but seeing this makes me think I need to upsize my baits. Been fishing ultralight for so long that a 3" bait looks huge to me now. I still catch good size fish, but the giants are probably ignoring me.
Atta boy, pretty scenery and fish. Here's a couple of things you may wanna try. Occasionally make shorter casts on your first cast. This is for those fish you can't see otherwise a long cast which produces a fish will spook the fish closer to you. In eddy water cast a floating top water bait and when it lands let it sit for a few seconds. This allows the fish to locate what just landed in the water...If I make a cast and it hits a limb, I call it a bumblebee cast. Like a bee or insect flys into the bush and hits the water. Let it sit then a little twitch and boom 💥. Good luck and have a Blessed Day!
Something to think about when shopping at Walmart or any big box store. While you may think that their stuff is "cheap crap" and not very good, a lot of the big box merchandise, whatever is their "store" brand...is probably manufactured in the exact same factory as the name brand stuff. I have worked in several plastic injection molding factories throughout my life. One of them in particular, I won't use names (don't want to get in trouble with YT censors) made their own name brand tackle boxes, AND they also made the Walmart Ozark Trail tackleboxes on the very same machines. This particular company claims that they use a proprietary plastic impregnated with certain chemicals which prevent rusty hooks...but I seriously doubt these kinds of claims. And even if it does...is it really worth paying three times as much for a plastic tackle box? *shrugs* Obviously Walmart and others will tend to carry the less expensive and less quality "name brand" merch such as rods and reels (the cheaper low end Lews and Abu Garcia stuff) so beware about buying THAT type of stuff cheap. Companies like Lews, Abu Garcia, etc. make this cheaper stuff specifically for the low-end market. But as for simple stuff like tackle boxes, lures, etc with a store brand name...rest assured that it is all pretty much the same stuff. If it is manufactured with a store brand name, it is probably made in the exact same factory.
The video is really good but the theme is just a bit old for viewers who follow multiple fishing channels. For the new to the sport fisherman I might have put more emphasis on good line and terminal tackle based on target species. If that idea appeals to you a budget of $50 would be plenty. Just a thought .. loved the action.

Walmart has a Shimano Sienna medium combo for 50-something bucks. The rod is medium power, fast taper, it's a good setup even despite the lesser cost. Little bit heavy, not bad, but it has it's weight where it needs it most, my wallet...

the first reel you looked at for 29 is not bad i have 2 of them and have had them for 2 years now
oh nice
@@CreekFishingAdventures some times those cheap ones will do better then you think lol
I almost bought that combo. Went with a Lew's Classic instead. Don't regret it, but it will be interesting to see this combo in action.

Nothing to do with Covid or FFS. It’s spawning season for everything plus water temps are abnormally high, that’s why fishing has sucked lately.
Hello from Delano just recently started watching your channel.
Welcome neighbor
You can absolutely find deals at Wally World. It’s hit or miss. Really enjoy your content. Your rivers are beautiful in TN!
Have u ever tried using the zebco dock demon spinning rod(u have to put a better spinning reel on it)
i had one years ago
Height and strength of combo? And what size reel
I know smallmouth are super aggressive, but seeing this makes me think I need to upsize my baits. Been fishing ultralight for so long that a 3" bait looks huge to me now. I still catch good size fish, but the giants are probably ignoring me.

i might but no promises
John, DR Pepper, and still under budget. Nice haul for the money.
Get the Garcia.thats an good one and you still can get an go pole for 35 doller at Walmart .
What rod power and action would you suggest for bass fishing?
the one he was using in this video as he was bass fishing and catcing bass lol.
medium fast is good all around
Cleveland TN Walmart. Can't believe I didn't fish more when I was there.
Someone please tell me where this location is
The problem with a flimsy rod is you can't set the hook.
Very good point
Noticed your shirt says Shenandoah, are you from VA by chance?
no it is the name of my church in TN
A RUclips way to say it lol. Good video. Say, did you ever fish Bull Run Creek any up here near Halls or Powell?
Not yet! maybe ill get to it this summer
@@CreekFishingAdventures that’d be awesome!

Noooooooooo not you too!!!!!!!
It ain’t the first of these. Channels have to do something different to grow. The RUclips algorithm isn’t just one topic.
Is it expensive for you to buy a fishing rod for 100 bucks? In our country, I can buy a very very good fishing rod for this money.
any reel prespooled is rubbish 😂
