    A few years back I decided to throw some money away, and bought an Alienware 17R4. I ran into an update problem with NVidia graphics drivers. Alienware tech support told me to never update old GPU drivers, to instead always do a clean install. I've never forgotten that bit of advise or had any major problems with graphics on any computer since. Getting rid of bloatware was made easier by building my own PC. Thanks for the tips on this other software you highlighted.

    • @CharlesSmith-io9fp
      @CharlesSmith-io9fp 2 года назад +1

      @@mcan-piano4718 When you update the drivers, all that happens is the new information is added to the existing driver. Like adding support for a new game. If for some reason the old driver had corrupted files, these remain and can still cause problems. A clean install removes the old driver completely, also removing possibly corrupted files too. It then installs a new or "clean" version of the driver with the new updates include. It can take a few extra minutes but eliminates problems. You can open GeForce and reinstall your drivers opting for a clean install. If your game has been running poorly this can correct those problems. That's why I always do it clean. It can help improve framerate in your games too.

    Recommended usage
    You MUST disconnect your internet or completely block Windows Update when running DDU until you have re-installed your new drivers.
    DDU should be used when having a problem uninstalling/installing a driver or when switching GPU brand.
    DDU should not be used every time you install a new driver unless you know what you are doing.
    DDU will not work on network drive. Please install in a local drive (C:, D: or else).
    The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best.
    If you are using DDU in normal mode, Clean, reboot, clean again, reboot.
    Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe).
    It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues.

      i switched last year. because windows had the audacity to reboot my pc for windows updates IN THE MIDDLE of a quest in Monster Hunter World. the reboot happened and an hour later the switch was done. also, with mint 20, nvidia optimus finally works. MH seems to run much more smooth on linux than on windows, i love it.
      the only software i did not get to run are: Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher (installer crashes), Corel Draw (wait... i don't remember, it used to not work, did i really try this on mint 20?), Dark Basic (somewhat works but unstable), The Elder Scrolls Online (steam version, the eso launcher is unable to access the steam library).
      if the Affinity and Corel worked, i could switch completely.

    In all fairness, there's a really big reason for the overhead... The average user, even the self proclaimed "gamer" and "computer / IT god", isn't qualified to uninstall their drivers / install new ones. nVidia, as they have it set up now, has a system in place that allows ALL end users to have successful driver updates along with worry free usage of their products after the fact... no matter how they use them. Asking the average user to go through the radio box list of items, and to then check the services and items that they "need", would surely result in a GIANT portion of their customer base to run into problems.. tons of them. All different kinds of folks, speaking different languages, with different problems. . . So a company is inclined to make a suite that can ensure that any sort of user is going to have an A-Okay time with their driver updates. Nothing wrong with it at all really.... Drivers still install fine, still work fine, and lots of folks will end up wanting to use items that they may have not included in their install... I know lots of folks who use ansel, geforce exp, stream or record with nvidia utilities, etc. not to mention power options that need to be installed on laptops and the like, otherwise sticking folks with IGP only... I use much of that stuff, and I wouldn't want to lose any of it at all, that's for sure. . . That along with the fact that there is literally zero performance impact to having these background processes running, and you are left with a "why wouldn't they do it that way" sort of situation. Now, if you are in a position to do what you did, knowing what you explicitly do and do not need / want, then fine. Same as any power user, go ahead and power use. But to suggest that nVidia is doing a no no is just, well.... inaccurate as it can be really. What they are doing is sensible from every angle .

And if nvidia control panel works after all that - maybe I can just block those processes from launching on startup via HIPS software or autorun manager and call it a day ? You could have just downloaded directly from NVidia and do a custom install; you would have gotten the same with custom installation. Just how I do it always.

    Extra tip, when uninstalling with DDU go to Options and check the last option at the bottom, it disables automatic driver download from Windows Update. Damn Windows 10 always interferes reinstalling some old driver.

    Imagine a world where the manufacturer cannot get real data usage information of the system. It would be soooo easy to find out what is going on. Also, RMA times would skyrocket

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n 3 года назад

      No, manufacturers should do it right and make sure they don't release bad drivers in the first place.
      Rust is getting popular for system level programming and creating drivers for it's safety and performance, but of course other than Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Google, not a lot of other developers wants to switch over.
      If Minecraft was rewritten in Rust, the performance would skyrocket above Bedrock edition, because the latter is written in C#, Rust has performance similar to C.
      It also seemingly require less lines of code to code similar applications, for example cut down a sample code from 1000 lines on C++ language to 200-400 on rust.

      @anewmanvs 3 года назад +3

      @@dra6o0n you obviously have no idea of what you're talking about. Every developer knows there is no way to release a driver, software or whatever that is perfect and doesn't require updates based on feedback provided by the user and usage data.
