    👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my RUclips channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, RUclips channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

    Thanks.
One thing I do is searching Spotify for user playlists that our songs would fit on. Sometimes have to google the users to find contact info. So I found this woman with a playlist with a few hundred followers (she didn’t even know she had followers) and long story short: her little kids became fans. So we recorded a video of an unreleased song, dedicated it to those two little kids. They couldn’t believe their ears that the band in the video was mentioning them by name. Turned them into super-fans maybe but of course also their parents :-)

Thank you for doing what you do! You're awesome.
You think we'd have it easy. We played twice a week with a venue that has a built-in audience. But it is still difficult for us to build true fans just by playing music. During our breaks we have to go out into the audience and try to build connections with people. Really music isn't just about music. Your videos of helped us build a fan base for a tricky genre of Music.
    Thank you Damian!!

We were very poor at stage 1 getting reach, but what we used to do at random times was invite a random fan to a rehearsal session allowing some one on one interaction with us and also sit in on a session and experience what goes on behind the scenes.

Awesome. We will be thinking about how to do this with fans. We've done a bit of it with bands that are in the area by featuring them on videos and even interviewing some of them. Many of our fans are in other bands, and that turns into more gigs. Thanks for the tips Damo!

100% Spot on. Treat people well and they'll support you through thick and thin. I'm lucky I learnt early on that engaging with fans at a level where they feel special (They are special) is key. I've even made real friends with some of these people along the way, an added bonus.
Yeh the numbers aren't huge. But they're big enough however, I crowdfunded two albums, created a video made up entirely of fan clips sent to me, had a guy up on stage with me who had been engaging with me from the off, a guy travelled 200 miles to my album launch!! That matters!
I can name so many of the those fans who supported me individually. I will make sure to see them at a gig and chat. I actually enjoy that and value it hugely. This is after all the age of social media. Be social, talk to people you never know where it can lead. I did all this with very little budget, use your imagination and engage, oh and have the songs too obviously ;)
    Nice one again Damo. x

    Wise words of advice indeed!👍🌹
I'm actually trying to create a stir by just putting up posters saying 'coming soon' and I have a fairly unique logo (not my pic here) that I use which always grabs people's attention anyways, so this way it creates a bit of a stir and a curiosity. I love the idea too of bringing somebody else new and upcoming someone who's worked real hard, maybe someone is not being heard enough, getting them to open or getting them to come and play a couple of their tunes. I'm always a fan of audience and fan-based participation. After all, we are all fans of someone, so ask yourself how you would like to be treated by your favs😉💜

Great advice Damian! From putting myself out there *once* via an Instagram DM, others have noticed my playing, so when they say, "Hey, Rob. I'd like to try having cello/violin/uke on a couple of my tunes, what do ya think?", I say yes. My gig offers, recording jobs, and teaching have all grown because of these little interactions, and we get to share fanbases everytime I show up at a colleague's gig to play a song or two.

It's so funny that you mentioned the Arkells! I went to the same uni as them a couple of years after they graduated. They REALLY know how to market themselves as hometown, local Canadian boys. Everyone at our school eats them up. I've seen them walking around the area too and they always stop for a pic and to say hello. They also always seem to remember me even though I've only met them a few times - making me feel really appreciated. They've really exploded here in Canada over the past couple of years just because they're the nicest guys.

One very powerful thing you can do is to build your own 'Media Platform' and distribute your content/podcast/music/meta content across the web on social media sites, but having that original source is a critical part of this. Damian offers some great insights and approaches, but as a web geek I offer you this very foundational concept.

Mr. Keys, I am a 56 year old man that has recently been called to be a Troubadour for the great Spirit. I've been a street singer for most of my life and now it's become very real. Real in the sense that I've been called to testify of Love and healing through song. I've been given 11 songs, one that is actually a musical alter call but alas,. I'm clueless as to how to proceed. Very insightful. I'd just like to add though, that genuine interest in the fanbase also goes a long way. These tips are great, but you shouldn't get too wrapped up in the strategy of it all and forget to genuinely appreaciate and respect your fans' passion, without judgment, cause those fans will be able to sens it if you're manipulating them into feeling a bond with you that is ultimately fake and born only out of your self interest.
Speaking from the perspective of someone who's part of arguably the most engaged music fanbase on the planet right now, genuine mutual respect is key. There's a vast difference between making them feel special because you actually care about how THEY feel VS. making them feel special because you know it'll help you gain their interest.

Damian, love your videos. They have given a ton of insight about turning your audience into fans. After watching this video, I’m a little stumped and maybe you can help me. What kinds of things can you do for a band at smaller level? The band you mentioned in the video has social presence already and someone asked to play with them, so they let him. That makes complete sense. The part I can’t figure out is what kinds of things can you do for a band that plays to rooms of 50-100 (as opposed to thousands) and has a much smaller audience and social presence (compared to the group you mentioned). I’m not sure if my question makes sense, but I would love your input. Thanks, Brandon.

But I always have one big question - all these Videos are for Musicians and Bands performing live, producing and releasing their new stuff and trying to build their "superfanbase". How is it for Artists like me, composing and producing Filmmusic. Honestly I released my first Video with my music 2 weeks ago - people shared it, liked it and I build a small base to go on. 1100 Views in 2 Weeks are incredible for me and gives me a feeling that my music is appreciated! But what's next? I can't perform with a huge Orchestra at Vienna Concerthouse ;) So do you have any tips for Filmmusicproducers? Thanks a lot

Not a single mention of a band, but lots of posts of him alone at the gig, at the radio station, giving away his band's merch for free after gigs while we were trying to sell ours. Legacy? Don't know. All I know is as good as the guy is at his instrument - he is out of my business.

Actually, I'm not that good at reach either. There's only three people in my room; one of them is me and the other two are lost.

I’ve found music to be a very community driven niche on IG, people are pretty open to network if you’re legit and have decent content, especially for musicians

dont agree that this is a method to build a fanbase in only 30 days, but i do agree that legacy is one of the most important aspects. felt like this video could've used less repeating the same words over and over to drive the point home, and more killer tips. like just be honest, if your music isn't getting at least MOST of the people in the audience hooked as fans, then your music or performance probably just isn't good enough or you're playing the wrong gigs.
