👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my RUclips channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, RUclips channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

I like that you acknowledged that people are basically releasing songs before they are ready.
Songs are ready when the artist thinks they are ready. Every other judgement is a music industry creation put in place to make money.

I've ran into many that believe their songs need to be perfect. Therefore they never end up producing anything.
"You can only fail if you never try, don't let fear control your life".
My songs will never be finished. I release when I feel they are good enough, other wise I will work on a song for a decade and it still wont be perfect
I don't presave - agreed it is an unneeded step in the flow of new music. Put it out and you can market it anytime after it is available is the way to go. I have started getting into video lately - I know you said the music video is dead but I think video is coming back as a more engaging way to experience your favourite artists. Just getting started myself so I always appreciate your videos!
New rapper check out my music
Damian is genuinely one of the best out here. Even just the fact that he's not reading a script the entire time is so impressive. Whoever gets the chance to work with him is sorteddd
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this message, thank you so much 😊😊
Im on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Pandora, iHeart Radio, RUclips, Odysee, RapFame, etc etc
Great advice about the 100 songs. This year, I have written, recorded and filmed myself making 276 songs/demos so far. I'm trying to get to 300 by 2024. It was day 160 when I had a video blow up and I got 30k followers on TikTok and 500k views. I'm still learning as I'm going on but I'm starting to learn how I can use my super powers to stick out. Thanks Damo for the great advice!
Yes, really love seeing long form organic content from you Damian, really helpful practical advice, and love the honesty and authenticity of the discussion in this video
Cheers! and very grateful for longer content, Happy holidays
The thing with the album in this day and age is that a lot of musicians still regard it as a bundle that must be delivered as a complete package in one go, even if that isn't even how it was historically done.
My theory is that you can absolutely create a body of work on the framework of an album and have an actual album in your catalog at the end of a year of 18 month period, BUT you treat it as a "season" in a series. The album concept gives you a focussed aesthetic for designs (artwork, backdrops, stage props etc.), themes and sounds for the songs and social media posts. Each song can be a single (doesn't have to be) with cover art and spotify canvas that is consistent and tied together until the album is fully released, after 6-10 monthly singles, or maybe you release the full album on bandcamp but drip it out as singles on the streaming platforms. The Album is your (band's) aesthetic for the next 6 months or a year or 2.
It's basically another level of Batch Creation like Damian advices for social media content. You can do it over the course of a month and while it all drips out you can already start planning and designing the next one.
Rapper check out my albums Ordeal (2019), The Throne (2021), & Multilingual (2023).
have you tried it?
TONS of great stuff to chew on. Thanks Damian, I really appreciate the longer format. It allows for more context and examples. Cheers!
Really appreciate that Gabriel, this really helps! Thanks 🙂🙂
Omgosh! Thank you very much! ❤ I’ve been banging my head against the wall on this issue! ❤
The roadblock I run into all the time is startup capital and pragmatic time... whilst on paper I have time, realistically having a gruelling 7:00-5 job ruins any sense of productivity for evenings. My strength is the number of songs I write in a short space of time, and live performance. But to perform live I need money for equipment, and (to make it the best show for an audience) other musicians. It feels like such a slow grind that its de-motivating
Love this long form unedited style! Helps me connect with your thought process better, and also is really helpful for me to spend longer immersed in listening and thinking about this topic. There's more time for me to come up wth ideas and reorganise my thoughts and intentions to motivate me to take action on what you're sharing.
Thanks for the video!!
Really appreciate the feedback, I will start working on more long form content from next week 🙂🙂

I don't think I've ever commented on a video before, but feel the need to here. This was brilliant and I love the long form content. This feels more like mentorship than someone trying to scam me or sell me something, and it works a lot better... I feel way more inclined to support you now or sign up to learn more from you. Love it!!
I really appreciate that, thank you so much. I’ll try to being more value with long form content 😊😊
I would add that it really felt as if you were talking directly to my@@DamianKeyes and I thought of searching your school for 3 times, loved your references to your early busiess experiences, but one hour is a loong time, I watched it all and it was serving the bill to my resting recources. perhaps 30-45 minutes is also good! Thank you for this Video!
I've watched dozens (scores?) of your videos & this is one of the best. Definitely like the long-form; recognised myself in some of your 'don't do this' examples, laughed & decided to shape up in 2024. About time; but gimme a break, I'm only 77...👀
Love the detail off the video and very inspiring. Much love brotha
Yes, I love the new form of content...Hearing you talk about and go into detail about stuff I wonder about all the time is great...Keep It Up
Long-form fireside chat content is my favorite and preferred. Like a mini podcast. Definitely do more of these... Plus you can put in much more valuable detail than a chopped up shorter piece of content... And we don't have to scroll around searching for answers so much. Good idea!
I make rap music
the long form video worked for me cause i saw that you posted a 55 minute video-
i felt like "okay hes really going to get into depth with the proper understandings on how to make it happen, i trust this. let us learn."
This was great! Thanks Damian! I loved it. I didn't listen to the whole thing, but skipped to the questions that was relevant for me.
Thank you for your video. I appreciated hearing your thoughts on each of these subjects - all so important to those of us balancing between continually growing as an artist and also getting our music out to the world, with a goal of it becoming an income stream.
Damien, Wish us a Happy Birthday, We turn 48 on December 1st and will be celebrating 25 years in the industry. Thanks for the wisdom! ❤
LOVE IT THANK YOU!!! yupp. really like this long form once or twice a month would be awesome!
Honestly one of your best vide (for sure top 3). Your 23 days single and 6 month album are my other favorites but here you gave all the info from them and touch other topics but in a crash course.
Awesome! Thank you for this!
So helpful! This is the first time I'vs seen you and have already learned so much! LOVE the long form!
Welcome to the party, really appreciate your comment, thank you 🙂🙂
Amazing stuff! Long unedited content is so much better!
I’d love more content like this for sure. Thanks so much for the video!
Been playing this on repeat. I do that with a lot of your long form videos but this is the recent one I've been repeating over and over
I am a Rapper
I don’t like long form videos tbh but this was a video I needed as an artist so ofc I watch the whole thing and I appreciate any length vid you drop to help us out real shit
Thank you Damian. I appreciated hearing your advice on making daily content.
Really enjoyed this video, so helpful! Thank you for this and for your channel!!
The most realistic perspective to modern music ❤ Thanks for the insight
I enjoyed long form video! Would love to see more! Thanks!
Love this video! Thank you for sharing your advice! ♥
Thanks for the video Damian. Great info as always and love the form!
I enjoyed that! Quite literally a fireside chat. I am seated by the fire on a Friday night and, since i am considering releasing some more music and questioning what/how I am doing it, it was so relevant & engaging.. You have covered a lot of areas and answered a lot of my questions. It is such an ever-changing minefield & it is good to be able to connect with someone who is ' on the ball.' I loved the long form content as I felt I could settle into it. Thank you so much or your ongoing content, as a small artist, trying to work professionally, albeit at a 'hobby' level, you really have helped me so much so far.
Thank you for this video. You have given me alot to consider.
I really love your style!! Tell it like it is baby!! Very informative and articulate! Bravo
Absolutely class video! Breaking it down to the finest details and most importantly, to the areas that need action and persistence.
Just thought I’d say good on ya, watched it all. Probably will revisit tomorrow as it brought up some really specific thoughts.
You really helped me. Thank you. Your words got my mind right and reminded me of a ton of things I needed to hear. Thank you.
I love long form. Looking forward to relaxing and learning about the music industry!
Yes! I love these long form content as they are easier to simply listen to. I love your edited videos as well, but I needfull atention! haha! This is great for multi tasking!
Great episode. Love the long form
Just finished a 2023 video...wish me luck in 2024 with 7 monthly listeners 😢😅
Thank you for your video !
I think it's your best video yet I've seen, seen a few over last few years. Churr from New Zealand.
Yes!! This long form, less edited videos are SO much better!! ❤
We grew up on the same music 😊 I actually think that less options is a good thing. The problem with all streaming is option paralysis...and all the bad quality stuff.
I LOVE that I grew up in the cassette and LP time...and CDs as a teenager. There was so much more love in finding music to own and to show friends. An app on a phone is just so insanely uninteresting. I've felt this way ever since streaming came into the picture. But I know it's not going to change....
My channel has some exclusive music
I love the long form style! Feels like a lot more value and easier to follow 👍 More of this please!
Great education as always!
+1
Ditto
My music is fire
Thanks educational, understanding and comfortable to watch. Humorous at times, enjoyed 👍💯
Yay! We love your long form content. Keep it going! 😁

Thanks for breaking it down for us Damian! I recently came across your videos and have been digging in deep. These simplified truths help artist focus on the important things to help them move forward without over complicating things and letting ego analyst. I am trying to help artist get started at a very early level. These videos help a lot! I do like the long form, I also like the short to the point videos that tackle one important subject.
Hope you have a great Christmas Damian all the best mate.
This has really helped me understand the wider context right now. This longer form of video is superb. I benefit from the shorter ones too so many thanks. 🙏👍👍😊
Lotta gems, tnx bruh 😎💎🥂
This video is more helpful than spotify blog posts about releases ahahha, great video thanks for the advice 🙏
Sir, this long form content is how you got me to sub. I just spoke out loud to only my cat and God, that I would like to give you a hug for how much passion you show to the idea of more artists creating and succeeding.
AMAZING video…really hit me. You really know how to put all the concepts and ideas and the real thing of how music industry works nowadays (particularly for the new ones like me) in a language that all can understand. Really like your video, your vibe, the way you talk, and of course I will look forward for more of this kind of videos. THANKS!
Yes you should do more videos like this! I appreciate you providing examples of different ways to go about each of the steps including the wrong ways lol! Definitely gave me a some new ideas/ways of thinking about career building, making content, etc.
Independent Artist
Definitely enjoy the long for so much good info and refreshers
This was great! Thanks so much, mate!
There are few RUclipsrs I would be willing to listen to for this long. You, however, are one of them. So yeah, more please!
thanks for the advice and well thought out explanations
I ❤ this long format. Hits home more. Thanks Damian
Really appreciate the feedback I will start work on more long form content for next week! 🙂🙂
I dig the long form format. Thank you for taking the time to pull this together. Lots to think about and implement. Cheers!
very very nice! thanks for the video.
I loved every second of this! Thank you for your time!!!!

Yo Damian great format for this type of content/topic! ❤🔥thanks a bunch
More of this please! My RUclips time is when I'm doing other things and it's "suggested video" algorithm sucks! With shorter videos i have to turn off whatever RUclips wants me to watch and go find something else better every 10 minutes!
yes yes, definitely more of these! so much value in one digestible video - love it. thanks damo!
I make hiphop music
Thanks for the inspiration!! Gems 💎 🎉🎉
Really appreciate that! Thank you
Also my biggest video of the year is dropping today. 'How to release a single in 2024'. It's a big one, hope it helps 🙂🙂
Long form is great!! Loved the video Damo.
I think this works really well as a format for your videos, but only when I've got time to sit and watch it, fortunately I did this morning. Anyway thanks, this was really useful.
Absolutely incredible video. Thanks so much. You are a master demister. ❤
Amazingly helpful video. I love they way you think and explain the things in a long detailed way.
Love your mindset, subscribed.
Thanks so much Andi, appreciate that 🙂🙂
Thanks Damian! I definitely appreciate the longer video 🧡
I think your long version videos are really helping the artist promote...they have to dedicate the time to really listen! I refer your videos to many indie musicians! THANKS!
Really appreciate that, thank you so much 🙂🙂
I've been watching your channel for a while, tried some of your tips and advice on a previous project and gained 15,000 organic Spotify streams that I couldn't believe, unfortunately the project disbanded, this is now my new one and we have a release planned for January, we are starting your "23 day release" plan that is on your website. I hope the same happens again haha, but I just want to say thank you for helping musicians and artists the way you have!
Independent Rapper Pharroh AK47
I like it. Also like the programs I'm signed up for. You keep the pedal to the metal either way lol
Spot on. Shared to FB.
Love the long form!!
Again an amazing video, Damo. Thank you!
Yes, it’s great!! Thank you 🙏🏽 ps add some chapters
Some really good tips about generating and recycling content. Sometimes it's exhausting just thinking about the volume that's needed to even have a chance at gaining traction on social media.
Really liked the longer video. very useful as a routine to watch something this size on a Monday morning as I start to plan my weeks music goals and tasks. Would love more of this
Listen to Pharroh AK47
Love this format, Damian! Thanks for all the work you put into all your content, you are appreciated!!
Check out my 3 albums and my singles
Cool mate!! Yeah good idea I like this style i can have the video passively running while doing all the housework and cleaning, its good! :)
Loved this, it gave me so many ideas for creating content. I also like the candid opinion on Spotify.
Love this video! Needed to hear this as a new artist I’ve been writing & recording for only 4 years & I’m trying to get out of the bad habit of skipping steps, rushing things, or doing them myself rather than paying to get the quality
You got this 🤍
Damian in answer to your question, personally I enjoyed the 'less choppy' video however, I am not a regular watcher of your content and wasn't aware of your 'choppier' videos. I tend to enjoy these longer videos so this one made me a subscriber. Thank you for sharing this!
I really appreciate this feedback, thank you. A new video is incoming in a minute, hope this one is interesting 🙂🙂
Very helpful info for a sponge like myself, to listen, take it all in and learn while working or working out! Perfection! 👌Thank you so much!
Very much appreciated, thank you 🙂🙂
There's no urgency for music like it was before 20, 30 even 40 years ago, cause there's so many other priorities for consumers right now in time. Music will always be there waiting. Always. And it's been like this since dawn of It. So that's why you dont feel the need of It. Cause nobody Will stole your time, your artistry, your talents, your songs, your visión, your concept and every other Word we like to write, produce, compose, etc. Just do the f*cking songs first, then you'll be able to get another step. And that's the way It goes. Be worried about getting yourself a Happy new year 2024, then go back to music, It Will be there waiting for you. Be happy, be blessed and be loved. 🎶🌎🧡🙌🏻😊
Definitely more long format videos! For someone who mainly consumes youtube while working, long format / podcast style videos are great for learning while on the day job 🙌
Did you hear the new Pharroh AK47?
Finally, a marketing expert who doesn’t use marketing jargon, but speaks in a clear manner. There’s so much contradictory and vague advice out there so this is such a breath of fresh air. Thank you
I really appreciate this, thank you so much. New video incoming, hope you enjoy it! 🙂🙂
Thank you so much for releasing videos like this. You have made my day!
That really does mean a lot to me thank you so much 😊😊
Dude as always love your content! this video was great definitely worth doing more of I think!
Really enjoyed this. Style was really similar to how you share info with us in the DKMBA lives. 👍 Thanks again! And Happy New Year! :)
Amazing, thank you!
Fantastic! Unfortunately I’m already 65 years old and it seems to be a little too late to follow all your advice but I’m gonna tell my son to do so. 👍🏼🍀
All of your vids are extremely informative and motivational at the same time.
Appreciate that, thank you. The biggest video of the year is dropping today. 'How to release a single in 2024'. It's a big one, hope it helps 🙂🙂
