I installed an RX 6600 I struggled with a Dell Inspiron 3020s I took the smallest RX 6600 I bought a SATA to 4 pin adapter I installed a PCI extension then once I started I undervolted it to 70W losing it only 7 percent performance I took a core I3 to minimize the consumption of the chip because the power supply is only 180w
the sad things about this optiplex+RX 6400 is that RX 6400 using pcie gen 4 x4 means that when you put it inside optiplex build like this the card will run at pcie gen 3 x4 which severely cuts performance. aside from that the design is quite great, 1 slot slim design and even a low profile bracket

I can confirm the 180w psu on my 5050sff does not have enough power. I disconnected the sata cd drive power and cable with no dice. The gpu fan does power on during startup. I plug in DP cable to the onboard you to check status and it's just stuck on the Dell logo. I take out the gpu, power on the pc and it boots to windows without issue.
I just bought an RX 6400 for my Optiplex 5040 SFF. I bought the HP Victus OEM RX 6400 for 100 bucks. Doesn't come with a low profile bracket but I'm hoping I can modify the one for the R5 340 that came with the Optiplex. Hoping to install HoloISO to make it a dedicated gaming console/PC for my living room that I can control solely with a controller. Only issue I forsee is that it doesn't detect the NVME SSD on the install screen.

Prices are insane in my country for these optiplexes. Refurbished ones cost around $180 for an i5 6th gen with 8gb ram and a 256 go ssd. That makes them sort of redundant. So wanna try out a low cost build.

In my country you can buy these Optiplexes without processor, hdd, and RAM. The cheapest 5040 SFF I can find is $44, add a used i5-6500 for $40, add new 16GB DDR3 and 256GB SSD for $29, you got a running PC for just $113.
That sucks man. You can try to grab one from eBay in the U.S. if the seller ships international. I got mine for $55 with a i5-6400, 8GB/RAM and a an RX 550 (terrible GPU) Keep in mind, if you want to upgrade the RAM you have to purchase low-power (LP) DDR3 (regular DDR3 does not work since the power-draw is too much). I added a 256GB NVMe drive, i7-6700K and 16GB more RAM topping it to 24GB and put an RX 6400 in it. For about $2000 or so I had a great gaming PC. Again, keep in mind if you want to use it for gaming, you either need a GPU that doesn't require external power and is low-profile enough to fit inside the case. Changing the case is an entirely different beast as a lot of stuff inside the case may or may not fit well in standard ATX and the power-supply connectors on the motherboard are proprietary Dell ones, so you need an adapter for the motherboard power connector if you plan on upgrading the power supply. There's a lot that goes into these but if you stay on the same gen CPU, keep all the components the same, generation-wise, it can still be a great computer.
What would be the smallest case I could use to install a motherboard in together with a newer CPU with reasonably good integrated GPU for light gaming. I don't need a discreet graphics card, I only need a small case with a MB, CPU, RAM and SSD (preferably M2), but my biggest dilemma so far is the PSU - how do I power the parts in such a small case?
@OptiGPU This was on a stress test so it was drawing more power than typical gaming world. The 6400 is 53w max draw and a these little optiplexes can more than handle it.

Yea the a2000 would plug into the 4x slot. Still much better than the RX 6400 in the 16x slot. Tight fit. You can double that RAM and you should be able to upgrade to an i7. 🎮👍

For that price you can get an rx 550 or radeon pro wx 4100 witch is like i think 5-8% more faster than rx 550 but for that price is the best option above nvidia cards at that price

As long as its a true single slot card you should be ok. If you look at the card straight on and the cooler is wider than a PCI slot or a finger then it'll be extremely close to the PSU.

XFX also made a low profile single slot RX 6400, as long as it's low profile AND single slot you're good to go. In SFF Optiplexes, dual slot video cards either not fit or you're just stuck to 4X Pcie.

Yeah, that’s a popular one at a good price. Keep in mind the 16X slot is far enough away from the power supply that you can fit a dual-width card in there, but you can’t go wrong with the RX 6400’s cost effectiveness, and it leaves your other slot open for something else.

This utility removes all traces of graphics drivers whether Nvidia or AMD. Useful when changing cards from one to ther other.

Yes, I have an RX 6400 in mine and it runs great. Just be sure to watch the temps on the CPU. I upgraded the CPU to a 6700K and it runs a little hot. Make sure you set the tower in a well-cooled/ventilated place to keep temps down. If you confine it where it can't breathe well, it will run hot and shorten the lifespan of your components.

you can install nvme drives in these with a bios mod and adapter

FYI I have an optiplex 32 gb i7 with sapphire 6400 lp. Drawing 180 watts on meter on 240w PSU.

In this case, no. The card doesn’t need very much power and the stock power supply works fine.

You’ll need a low profile bracket if you’re installing in a small form factor PC. If it’s a mini tower, you’d use the standard bracket.

It could work with a HDD, but an SSD would be much snappier to run the OS. You could get more storage space for the money with a HDD.
