@toxzic probably because GTA 5 is the newest GTA game even though it's pretty old at this point. if you think that's bad, RGHD says GTA 4 is a "rockstar classic" and that makes me feel old even though I am gen z

Depends on the chipset.
I have one with a xeon... just had to update the bios from dell and it worked fine...
@@TheShugster1874 How do you get a Xeon into the chip slot?
@@Flytrap I have an E3 1231 V3 in my B85M board. It was way cheaper than a 4790, runs a few less watts, and performs quite close to it. Before they corrected the error, I could actually overclock the Xeon and get all the cores to run at 3.8Ghz. Not that long ago, there were Xeons that would work in desktop sockets, but Intel has ended that.

@@stealthzz3982 2 years late, I know. I agree. It may seem silly, but 35 fps is indeed much nicer than 30. I won't play a game with either framerate, as 45 fps is where i can actually start to focus on the game and not feel as though it's a complete slideshow.

You got ripped off at $100. The original motherboard and CPU is only worth like $40 dollars. You could of had a 4th gen i5 optiplex SFF for $100 instead. They still aren't the best deals since you are stuck with low profile cards. You could have spent that extra money on a new system. A case with a more modern motherboard, CPU, RAM and power supply is just a bit over $200 used and you are then open to a selection of better and more affordable graphic cards.
My point is upgrading an SFF isn't the smartest thing to do on a budget these days. Build new or just get a full size optiplex instead.
@@Heliocentric unless they want an sff build
@@razer1158 oh I know. My point sorta is if you want budget don't go SFF.

I found a basic HP desktop with i5-4590, 8gb ram, and 500gb hdd for $50. First PC ever, did some research and found 1050ti was my best option as my PC has a proprietary psu. Dug some more and found it can actually take a 1650 which is a significant leap over the 1050ti. So I bought the 1650 (gddr6 version) for $160 on Amazon right before chip shortages and price increase took place. I since upgraded to 16gb of ram and a 250gb satta SSD. For $250 total I have a pretty competent machine. Even capable of very minor VR games like VRchat. Been that way for a year now.
My buddy actually found an old i7-4770 in storage and it's actually compatible with my motherboard so I'm going to upgrade to that shortly which will see even a bit more performance. I'm shocked foreal. It's It's great machine for $250
Your videos are always so relaxing to watch, thanks!
I recently came across a dump of dell optiplex's in a thrift shop, one of them looked really new and had an i5 8600, 8gb dual channel in it for €50.
Threw a cheap gt 1030 in there and turned it into an emulation beast 😎
an i5 8th gen?! damn
I started with a Celeron G470 and GT 610, and now have a Ryzen 9 5900X and RTX 3070. Don't lose hope.
lol i have no hope
@@lazycarper7925 Same until it happened
Bruh, that's basically the same i had lol. But instead of a celeron it was a pentium
When my best friend's PC died on them, I bought an Optiplex 780 with a i5-2400 for cheap off eBay, tore it down, gave it a good clean and a coat of spray paint or three. I chucked in a low profile GTX 1050 (back when they were MSRP), scrounged around for 12GB of RAM, and velcroed an SSD inside as the bootdrive. It was meant to be a temporary gaming PC while we got a brand-new build sorted so I tried to spend as little as I could. That was over 3 years ago and it's still going lol. My friend mainly plays GTA Online and The Sims 4 and it's still fine in both of those games. They remove the side panel while gaming to keep temps down which definitely helps. It was a fun little tinkering project for me with bigger than expected payoff in terms of lifespan, and I have massive respect for any Optiplex builds/mods as a result lol
I remember about 5 years ago I had a set up very similar to this. I bought a cheap Lenovo M91p SFF and smacked a low profile 1050 ti in that thing. I have to admit that thing was a trooper, and it was great price to performance at the time. Man I miss when the 1050 ti low profile was still cheap.
Love this guy
I really just more understanding and info about pc hardware here
Very nice!!!
Do keep us posted, about the temperatures inside this little pc!!
These computers make great compact budget gaming machines. I ran a 390 SFF with a GT 1030, an SSD, and 8gb of pretty nice DDR3- all stuff I had lying around. It did a pretty decent job. It helps that you can quite literally find them being thrown out all the time, too- I've probably fixed up and sold at least 5 of them at this point.
Even though I just spent 2300 on a PC I still love watching videos like this
I would have liked to have seen you bench mark the before and the after, so you can see exactly how much better it is. I put a low profile 1650(back when they were $160) in a 4th gen i5 optiplex for my buddy's kid and they love it, plays everything they throw at it well enough. These really are great "bang for the buck" PCs.
Great video 😀 this is where I started my journey with building pcs 🖥 you don't have to have a mega costly high end pc to have fun 😀😄 I still have a asrock deskmini with a 3400g and still enjoy using it alongside my main gaming rig 🥰
If u pair a decent gpu with that Apu it still makes a solid low end gaming rig.
@@cortezbaldur413yes deffo agree with you, but in my case the deskmini is way way too small for a gpu, and they don't have a pcie slot on the mb, this ickle pc I just use for Web browsing and emulation or playing older games maybe a bit of office work, i like it cause it was really small size wise, low power and cheap to build 😉 I have another pc for my main gaming set up 😏
Great Video. Especially because those Small Old PCs are everywhere.
welcome to my first gaming PC, although mine was 'upgraded' with a GT730 back then. Dirt cheap way to get into PC gaming and taught me a lot about system building. Incidentally the SFF optiplex I had the full length PCI slot was in the bottom of the 2 expansion slots so I had to find a low profile, single slot GPU. OEM PSU and Mobo became the biggest issue in upgrading.
Did something not too far from this nearly a year ago, I manage to snag an Optiplex with an i5 2500 and GTX 1650 Super. Then later upgraded to an i7 2600, though not a huge difference, it did help with games that utilized the hyperthreading on the CPU.
Finally a channel that's giving solutions rather than click baiting us with false hope. I subscribed immediately!!
I just upgraded my own optiplex. Dremmeled out the side panel, ran my 980ti with a riser. Trick is to get that proprietary mobo power socket adapted for a standard ATX PSU. 1440@120 to the TV is slick. The empty space from the old PSU is perfect for hiding the other psu cables.
Can’t get enough of the channel!
Good job dude..It would be cool if you did a rundown of pre vs after upgrades.
This is my exact current gaming and work station. While I can't game maxed out at 1080p all the time, it's still a very competent rig for gaming, emulation, editing and music production. Might upgrade when prices go down and I start to make more substantial money, but for now this works surprisingly well!
It's good to see someone actually building the spec I have
I love these SFF PCs, you can do some fun tinkering to them. I have a maxed out elite 8300 and it feel like a modern system in many cases.
I was rocking that same CPU for the last 4 years in an Optiplex - finally had to upgrade last month - amazing CPU for 60-144fps at 1080p with a 1060 👊🏻
I’ve done a similar build with a small form factor Dell from that generation. In 2020, graphics cards were much cheaper so I opted for the GTX 1650.
Otherwise I’ve chosen the same CPU and same amount of RAM.
And I upgraded to a 480 GB SSD.
Never regretted building this machine. Works fine for gaming with Steam on Ubuntu.
These videos really show the reality of diminishing returns. I've got a decent mid-range gaming PC, but I could deal with something like this. Hell, I've had a great time gaming on weaker hardware.
it turned out into a relatively acceptable rig with those upgrades, the power supply was quite the mvp there
but the original mechanical HDD, a small one at that is a terrible bottleneck like putting a GT 1030 in a Threadripper would be
The trouble with the newer Optiplexes is that the 16x slot is right up against the power supply and you can only run a single slot GPU in it. I have an i5 4590/GT1030/8GB. It was my gateway to PC gaming and is now the RUclips and Netflix box.
Great video! There is a ton of older games this rig could run. One of my favourites, Civilization 5, should pose no problem for this machine.
I remember the glowing GTX on the 770/780/ti before rgb was a thing. I loved it and now i got one in my showcase ❤️
Thank you for this, I've been planning on sticking a Quadro k620 in basically the HP variant of this and was doubting it would work. Now I know!
Might be tricky getting drivers for that I tried downloading drivers for a Quadro card and unlike GeForce had a tough time finding the driver with the cards exact name.
@@cortezbaldur413 It's not hard on Windows, Nvidia has a tool where you input the card name and it brings up the newest drivers. On Linux there's just one nvidia driver for all nvidia cards too. Plus, I've installed quadro drivers 4 or 5 times by now.
This video is super timely as my i7 3770 is currently on its way and this gives me an idea as to what I should expect.
I have similar build (i5 3570 + 16GB) except that I have a 1650. Hopefully, the 3770 combined with my 1650 will provide slightly better results than your config.
Great video, as always. Cheers.
1650 is A LOT better than a 1050/1050ti so fuckin aye chief :)
I got an rx550 with 4gb of gddr5 VRAM and it runs really good
I did something similar with a Haswell-era Optiplex for a back up machine. I used a Quadro P1000 instead of a GTX1050/1050Ti as it was cheaper at the time. Not sure how things are currently with the GPUppocalyse, but it used to be that lower end Quadros would often plummet in price when they got old, so were worth keeping an eye out for.
Built a 3570k + 980ti in march, still runs anything I throw at it in at least a mix of medium/high settings.
Both overclocked though.
One thing to note on the CPU upgrade... if you're upgrading to an i7, or HT Xeon, from the i5, you will have to go into the BIOS to enable hyperthreading as it will default to off in the OptiPlex systems.
Yeah I made that mistake recently when I upgraded a PC with an i5 3450 to an i7 3770, forgot to turn on hyperthreading in the BIOS and was wondering why the PC weren't performing much better for about a week haha.
Nice racing, WattledChicken!
I also have 3770 and its still capable of 1080p gaming
i Have a 7010MT, it has a i5 3rd gen, 8gigs of ram, and a rx560, i fell in love with the beautiful case, and even when i upgrade to ryzen (probably soon) i will keep the case

One nice thing about these low-profile cards is they are super easy to “Noctua fan mod”. The biggest reason to do this is none of the low-profile cards have “Zero-RPM Mode”. My Zotac Low Profile 1650’s MINIMUM fan speed is 40%!!!
To fix this fan noise issue, I strapped two 60mm Noctua fans on with zip ties. It’s nearly silent at 100% fan speed and runs cooler at full load (fan speed only goes to like 50% when the GPU is at 100% now). I got a VGA fan adapter thing (2pin -> 4 pin Y-Cable), so both Noctua fans are controlled by the GPU fan header! I love it lol.
I just finished upgrading 2x optiplex 3020 mt’s. 16gb 1600 ddr3 in both, i7 4690 in one with an upgraded psu and 750ti. The other upgraded to an i5 4570, 16gb ram and a 1030gt. (Ssd’s fitted) -both were cheap to put together and work well -very happy -would recommend
deadass my first pc (owned by me anyway) , now ive got an rx 6700xt with a ryzen 5 3600. Big ass jump
I used to have an optiplex that I used for many games but it was really stuttery and hardly ran more demanding games that I liked even on low settings. It had an i5-3470, R7 360, 520w old psu, 3x4gb 1333mhz drr3, 120gb ssd, mobile 1tb hdd. After upgrading, 20 fps feels nice cause it's not stuttery anymore
And now it's better than my PC 😁 Same config, but a 1050 (9-9-9-24 RAM though).
Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge were really solid processors. I managed to overclock the i7-2600k high enough to match the performance of newer generation intel chips, with no cooling problems whatsoever. Those generations were really OP when it came to performance.
Also I would check to see if the cpu scores are normal for the 3770, it may be watts limited on that board which could be tweaked with XTU (A bit, dont go nuts).
i currently still use the 3770 in combination with my 1060 3gb and it works like a charm for my use.
The recommended thermal paste for custom pc or repasting old pc/laptops go for Arctic’s mx4
1050ti is a beast! I have the exact same rig and it holds up surprisingly well in 2021. The CPU i7 3770 however is showing its age on CPU intensive games like Total War warhammer games.
Thanks for getting me into pc gaming my guy o7

This is basically what I did this January. I made a budget build from new and used parts from Kijiji. I5 3550 with an r9 280x
I love my i7 3770! Was gonna buy an i5 2500k and thinking of overclocking but I have no good knowledge on OC-ing so I went with 3770 back then. Had a 750ti back then and still works amazingly with my rx480 right now . :)
i got an OptiPlex 3020 off eBay 8 months ago and ive been happy with it ever since, it came with an i5-4570 and 8gb ddr3 but i upgraded it to 16gb ddr3 and i added a gt 1030 because the 1050 would not fit (yes it was low profile) and i overclocked the gt 1030 debloated windows and i would say it matches the performance of this build and if not even provides slightly better frames especially in red dead

I tried to do similar, but with GTX 1660 ti, running with Secondary PSU. Unexpectedly worked very well
Hi! Are there 2 Pcie or 1 only? Thanks! Toying with adding a gpu and a video capture card.
Just got an i7 to pair with a 1660 so interested to see how your set up runs. I should get a 4.5% bottleneck at 1080p with my combo but that is yet to be seen.
I brought that unit recently except since it came with an i3 for $40 and that was because it had no hard drive and ram. I ended up upgrading memory to 8GB, 500GB HD and stuck in a Nvidia 210 and ended up being under $100. My only issue was it came with some bottle necking due to i3, but did find some units that came with i5 I hope to snag someday and have been aiming for those GTX 1050 ti or 1650 low profile ones.

Cyberpunk 2077 running like that is cool to see on that kind of system.
I'm still rocking a 3770k, definitely showing it's age but handling everything I throw at it
I have one of these lying around, except its an optiplex 780. It has a second-gen i5 and some horrendously slow 4gb of ram. I don't even want to try to game on it but I must say these things are very good for keeping important files and for making backups.
I got an i5 2320 + 8GB of ram, with a GTX 480 (better than GTX 750 ti, but not a lot). It's running like a beast.
Pro tip: install freenas on the system, that way, you can access the backups from another pc
@Narkomancers
Yeah mostly in newer games that were released after driver support died for Fermi.
You could get a 250GB NVME M.2 and enclosure for it and use it as external SSD for files you want to keep through USB 3. OR you can get a regular SATA M.2 with enclosure OR just a regular 2.5" SATA SSD with enclosure. OR if you want a lot more space then the cheapest way is to get a 1TB regular external HDD but they're much slower. Personally I use a 256GB Gen3 NVME M.2 with enclosure that I had laying around since I upgraded to 1TB Gen3 NVME M.2 for OS not too long ago.
Not sure if I understand why you wouldn’t just use external hard drives for backups instead
these pcs are really good in terms of price to performance. it got an old hp 400 g1 gave it a amd rx 550 and 12gb of ram and i was wandering if an i5 4590 would kill the psu or should i use the s variant of the cpu
Nice to see that my mom's PC is capable of running some games - in case she wants to play some :D
dam, i have a lenovo thinkcentre with a 4th gen i5 and 8gb ram ddr3 and recently i bought parts for a new pc because i though it waas a better idea in long term, but i spend $300 in a 5600g and the other parts to build a new pc. but now i feel that maybe was not the best choice? should i take advantage of my old lenovo thinkcentre ?
My daughter plays on a similar Optiplex, I also upgraded it with a 1050TI and it plays every thing she wants well. I got a caddy off amazon to replace the DVD drive that holds and SSD that I made the boot drive.
My daughter optiplex has an i5-2400 and 8gb of ram, so eventually I'll copy you and upgrade the cpu to an i7 3rd gen and increase the ram to 16gb to give it a bit more life.
2 possible solutions to avoid overheating: 1) leave the case open, it should lower temperature real well. 2) leave the case open AND buy an external PCIe card holder with PCIe 16x cable, to relocate the gpu in a favorable position. In this case, it will run a lot cooler!
Amazing upgrade. I'm building a new system with a Ryzen 5600X, but until then, I'm still rocking my old Xeon X5650 (upgraded from an i7-950!) with a 1050ti.
16Gb is indeed the sweet spot for gaming, only thing I would recommend, if possible on a budget, is to get the fastest memory modules you can.
Maybe also replacing that case fan with something better like a Noctua one (although they aren't the cheapest), and definitely ditching that DVD drive, which could help improve airflow and temperatures inside the case... :)
@randomgaminginHD I have one of these and have been in two minds about what to do with it. Have you found the lack of USB 3.0 a problem with this model? Limiting broadband speed etc?
i have one of these, the i5 version, 1050ti, 12gbram, 500gb ssd, 1tb hdd, had to remove the dvd drive for the hdd but i never used it anyway, had it for a year this month, hasnt let me down yet
Yoo nice. Ive got a similar build (my dad's actually), i7 3770, 16gb ram, optiplex 9010 with a msi GT 1030 GPU (fan model). Ive done some benchmarks and gaming tests on there and I'm really happy how it performs considering it costed only $300 AUD (£161), the CPU cooler is absolutely fine, better than what most Dell gaming prebuilts offer now, but the GPU does run a little hot at 80 degrees Celsius.
Got the exact same optiplex, upgraded to 3770, 1tb ssd, 16gb ram, cut a hole in it and put in a 1650. I also painted it, to make it look rusty, put some chains and stuff on it. Like a "mad max" kinda build. Runs great😁🤘
does it give any problems?
Will this set up be able to run Windows 11 When it comes out ? Could you test it ? thanks!
Would the power be ok if u have an ssd caddy installed more ram a new cpu and a new gpu?
I love these vids, I find them more entertaining than those overpriced 3080 ti builds and such. I like the creativity of squeezing value out of hidden gems
I have a Optiplex 3010, and I should definitely upgrade it further.
I turned one of those into a heck of a pc for my daughter. Nice for a pc I bought from work for $50. I put it in a new case. There is a thing for the power switch off of ebay you can get to work for the power button.
Used to get that on Fortnite on budget builds, changing to DX12 mode used to sort it out, lower cpu usage but a little less overall FPS.
I’ve done this! I have a sell optiplex 3010 and put my 1050 ti low profile in it and sometimes it can be annoying as the wires can hit the fans making a noise and I have to move them. I’m going to be getting a 7010 mt which is better for airflow and performance
Basically my PC, but with Hyperthreading on an older CPU. Pretty interesting to see the performance here, even if my own experience differs because my hard drive is a bit old.
This guy can turn anything into a gaming pc
I failed trying to upgrade one of these prebuilt’s before. So now I’m planning on using my savings, and a few of the parts that I had left from my failed system, and hopefully I’ll be able to get a Ryzen system up and running before the end of the year. Wish me luck everyone.
i7 3770($60 USD) + 1050 Ti($160) in an HP 8300($50 retired uni pc) tower was my gaming workhorse for three years until I finally upgraded to a 3800x + RX 590 this month! The 3770 was amazing and still holds its own in 2021. I did a lot of Warzone and Skyrim and it was all good.
