This man deserves a award for up-cycling/recycling electronic components and such, I thought I was the only one (or one of the few who still did) who didn't have the money to be able to purchase a decent computer, and through recycling/upcycling/trading/etc. I built several machines, sold them, built my own IT business, learned a ton of hardware/software stuff and eventually obtained enough resources to build my liquid cooled rig :) Keep it up everyone, much love!

:( I got a huge smile on my face when I saw your joy once the computer booted with the 1030. I recently had a build similar to that where I was sticking to a VERY tight budget and had problem after problem. Unlike you, I gave up and ended buying a new Ryzen, MB, and RAM. I enjoy videos like this. I love doing video work for others, but am too much of an introvert to try making my own videos. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, I was doing exactly the same build, but with a k410 thinkcentre. Ended up with a Ryzen 5 1600, asrock 370x kill sli/ac, 16gb ram, and a 1tb nvme. Now I'm thinking of finishing the build.

Yeah I got all excited at the 1650 box 😲, but then thought oh yeah the WHOLE PC is less than $100USD 🙄

Look who it is :)
RTX 560 lmao
Hey, I got one of those RX 560s from XFX, too! I paid... Uh... $140 for it. Hey, I was desperate and it was in the middle of the mining craze. It's still the best video card I've ever bought. ... Uh... That works. Yeah. I do have an RX 480 8GB model that the RGB lights up on. Nothing else worked at all. I might fool with it much later. Until then, I have a cool looking Sapphire Pulse that does nothing else that I paid $75 for.
I was able to build a nice system at the end of last year, though. All new parts. It's running an Athlon 200GE, 16 GB 3200MHz RAM, 1 TB NVME SSD, (It's an Intel 660 I was able to get for $80. I didn't need it, but I WANTED it!) It's in a fairly small form factor case, though I think my mITX motherboard is wasted in it. I want to put in a micro ATX later, and use the mITX for a true small form factor build using my 1600AF with a decent video card, once I can afford it. It will use that RX 560 until I decide what I want to pair with it. You know, once I get it built. It WILL have a 2TB NVME drive, though.
For the video card, at this moment, I'm thinking it'll end up being a GTX 1660 Super or an RX 580/590; Maybe a 5600XT. Maybe.
This is such a great video, showing this process with all of the road bumps is so valuable. thanks for this!

:( I feel like we’ve all been through a build like this before. My latest was an 1150 motherboard trying to get an i5 4690 to work that I got for an absolute steal. After getting different processors and trying different memory and verifying my components on another motherboard I found that the ez flash bios update that you can do inside of the bios didn’t work as advertised and needed to be done inside of windows. Upon performing this process I was then able to upgrade to the new processor and now I have myself a fairly powerful and efficient machine to use to learn some of the programming I hope to wrap around automating a network.

Watching you go through all of this reaffirms my thoughts on building new or newish using new and my own used parts. Not buying used over ebay.
Yay man I bought a used server then canceled it and they sent it anyway. Now what am I going to do with this free Dell PowerEdge 710.
Don't be scared off. The money savings are great but you do have to know what you're doing. I bought the same used rig as this but with a faster CPU (i74790). All I did was change the PSU and it runs a GTX1660Ti no problems. I haven't bought a new PC for 20 years.
That $80 PC got expensive pretty quickly...
Having said that, I appreciate that you were willing to admit that things don't always go smoothly with these homemade builds. Also... where the heck are you getting these deals on GPUs? Smokes the GT 240 I bought for my Batocera system for $34 with S&H.
Right! I was just thinking..... GOT damn an i7 for cheap. WHERE?! lol
@@NiNjaTurtLe697 The fact that it's an i7 doesn't really matter... it's absolutely ancient and gets smoked by any modern i3. Look on ebay, guarantee you can find one for next to nothing.
@@BIGAPEGANGLEADER I would not say it will get smoked. It performs about the same as a modern I3 but the fact he got the I7 so cheap. Still many I3's still is shipped with 2 cores and 4 treads, while the I7 870 has 4 cores and 8 treads and can handle overclocking.
@@ikramshahar44 no i3 has shipped with under 8 threads since the i3 10100k released in early 2020 , well over a year and a half ago.
The 10100k can be found for absurdly cheaply in the UK, US and Europe. The i3 10100k has 8 threads, turbos to 4.3ghz and has massive, massive IPC improvements over the i7 870. Yes, it smokes the i7. It has approx double the single threaded performance and nearly triple the multi thread according to passmark, which is a good general benchmark. In some applications, I imagine the i3 pulls even further ahead.
@@BIGAPEGANGLEADER Well still the I3 sucks when it comes to price and performance. Even modern I3's are way more expensive than Ryzen 3 which is can out perform a I7. Even the U model core I3's suck in laptops.

Back when one of our team had to come up with an emergency rig he ended up on a family members old HP Pavilion prebuilt that seemed promising (i5 2310, 8gb RAM) nothing wanted to cooperate, the AMD Radeon 6770 in it was fried, the psu blew shortly after ripping that out which led to buying a replacement, the replacement wasn't what was ordered (an unrated Coolmax with super amazing blue led fans labelled as Coolermaster,) it wouldn't work with a 750ti and would just cause the fans to start spinning like it wanted liftoff, the front panel usbs decided to take a vacation at some point which is still a mystery, it wouldn't work with any other RAM than what was already installed, and overall it became the build from hell, even the parts now occupying that case have since suffered a string of bad luck in terms of sudden failures, its like that things cursed or something.
When things keep going wrong on a machine and you're used to seeing people just knock it out through internet magic or being awesome/lucky/both it can add to the frustration a lot, its pretty cool to see people like you embracing the side of pc building where it can really suck sometimes and everything can go wrong for sometimes the most ridiculous of reasons, because in a way its like saying its okay for stuff to hit the fan sometimes because it happens at any skill level. It can really help motivate someone who's having a hard time with their rig to keep trying to find a solution.
I really enjoyed this episode, the best part was the troubleshooting.
It was like a day at my workplace 😂
I've done similar builds in the past but nothing to the degree you are here...I've taken used Dell desktops and workstations with working RAM, CPU and storage, wiped the hard drives, put in graphics cards, and used them for gaming, or given them to friends or relatives as gifts. I love that you made such an effort to keep the build within your target budget, and TBH I've been in a position before where a budget salvage build like this was my only option. I also love that you keep the language G-rated so I can watch these with my kids. Keep up the good work brother!
You also could have tried to find a modified bios to flash it to allow you to use an AMD GPU (does away with the GPU whitelist) and do away with a lot of limitations in the BIOS. I had to flash the bios in my laptop to remove the whitelist so that I could use an external GPU on my laptop, Because the whitelist only allowed WiFi cards to be used on that socket.
I flashed one of my old hp rigs and was able to overclock on a oem mobo. i also used a program to overclock my other hp rig before i built my own.
@@skippingbear92 yeah, it's amazing on what OEMs hide
i had an intel 3rd gen Lenovo "gaming" pc and the bios stopped being supported immediately and had no updates and there were ZERO modded bios for it. I could not run any 900 series or newer cards or any 600 or 700 series cards that had more then 2GB VRAM. nothing after UEFI worked, including SSDs! it was a nightmare waste of time and money upgrading it.
@@gradient602 Its crazy to think how oem's block so much stuff like this. back when i was messing around with oem's i could put any cpu and any gpu in there. last oem i had was a dell xps 420. q8300 and 8800gt

Some people think we’re magic, they (probably) didn’t see the journeys we went thru .. there’s no magic with out a price ...
I believe those HP Z workstation power supplies are proprietary. They have the usual atx plug, but several wires are different.
Even worser are SFF units, it doesn't work out nicely
The connection are all proprietary!
You can get an adaptor to use a ATX supply. You need to add a plate where the old supply and pop the sence pins of a fan into the slim connector. And the power for the fan over to the CPU cooler with a splitter. I made a mount with a steel ruler to hold the PSU and cut a slot for a pcie x16 riser. So it's got a Rx 580 8gb as well. Works fine as a editing pc. The z series has sata 3 and pcie 3. So it was a bargain. 3770 4c/8t 32gb ram added a olmaster 4 bay drive cage for 4 SSD intel pro duel slot nic. Thing is a little beast and didn't spend that much on it. The intel NIC is grouped so it pulls from the Nas and the onboard NIC is for a net connection. SSD scratch disk SSD render drive SSD network drive and SSD system drive. And it has hardware raid options from the bios set up

I love your appreciation for value. Often lacking in modern society :(
Wouldn't a cheaper route have been to just get a motherboard that supports the i7 (really strong CPU, esp at the price you got it) and the GPU you alread had?
Granted, the i3 was dirt cheap, but it's definitely throttling this build hard. Still a super fun project, definitely earned you a new sub here and on Twitch :)
Really liked your look of true happiness when it posted and when the splash screen showed 😅 I also buy used parts, pimp it up and resell and what this video did highlight is also the risk we take for the good deals. If you were truly only had the 80 dollar then you would not have a functional PC.. Also it shows the time and effort taken to get these older things to work properly, so if you were to resell this your time spent would make a lousy salary 😬 New sub here!

Definitely a good idea to check research on the various OEMs. Having experience with Thinkpads I know Lenovo is big into whitelists. I went with an HP 8200 because I got a cheap deal on a barebones model and so far it has worked with anything that will physically fit in the case.
“This computer only costs $80, 64 hours of trouble shooting, 41 hours of deal hunting, and 4.6 hours of driving around to pick up components and a completion time of 3 months. But it only cost $80. Manufacturers don’t want you to know this secret!”
You forgot all the money spent on faulty HW.
Ryan Winters you right, big miss on my part! This video is a real life rendition of why people shouldn’t DIY using Lenovo/HP etc. parts because there are ALWAYS issues. That is the reason you can find $12 motherboards on eBay.
I hope people trying to save a buck on their first DIY computer pay a lot of attention to what happens in this video and not focus on the “$80” price tag
@@nicholaslamborghini9286 Tbh i think if u want to build something of this style i think the optixlex mini tower 790,970 and etc from dell work fine but unfortunately they dont sell for cheap, i think these builds are fine but you have to do some research beforehand especially when you are going this path. The prebuilts I've used were dell and HP. I remembered when I first considered using a prebuilt for a gaming pc, I learned that Lenovo is a pain to work with.
The old Dell's were alright, just needed a bios update and uefi support fix.
I've had pretty good luck with HP and dell and lenovo's newer systems (excluding proprietary mobo connectors on lenovo). i guess their older machines were just tougher compatibility wise
I often use the HP Z lines the Motherboard connection is remedied by an adapter.
